Black Up is the new sonic move from Shabazz Palaces. Like rich velvet hijabs or gold threaded abayas. Luxury as understood by the modest. If Bedouins herded beats instead of goats and settled in Seattle instead of the Atlas Mountains, this would be their album. Forward thinkers but nostalgic for a sparer time when ancient astronomers only recognized five planets. Black Up was recorded and mixed in Lixx-alog by Blood and produced by Knife Knights at Gunbeat Serenade Studio in Outplace Palacelands.1. Free Press and Curl

Quazarz vs. The Jealous MachinesQuazarz vs. the Jealous Machines is one of two new albums by interstellar hip-hop enigma Shabazz Palaces, aka Ishmael Butler (who, in another galaxy, performs in Digable Planets) and Tendai Maraire. Quazarz vs. the Jealous Machines, and its companion, Quazarz: Born On a Gangster Star, were both produced by Knife Knights (i.b e.b.) and mixed by Blood.
Quazarz came to the Earth from somewhere else, a musical ambassador from his place to ours. Somehow, through fire or through fury, the Palaceer of Shabazz Palaces caught wind of the tale, and it is through his prism that we hear the story.
The beach was there, and Atlaantiis, and chemical alterations and cell memories and Andre Norton, Richard K. Morgan, and always Octavia Butler. There were killings and there were votes, and brutality in both. There was sound and there were other worlds, and there was a vastness so participation sometimes came only at the edges. And the Palaceer coasted down with the alien notion, like Quazarz, and so became.
On Quazarz when they look at this place they see the inhabitants, the humans, but they don't assess as we do. And so Quazarz was sent to meet a cat with vibration, a creative and courageous, caring, compassionate dude that stood out. The dude was a drug dealer, but that was neither here nor there, until his dealings squashed the rendezvous, leaving our alien alone to figure out what this place is really all about.
Coming from a simpler, more essential, innocent place, the hero could not make heads nor tails of most advancements. From an aerial view, he saw that a good percentage of earthly vibrations were on very small squares and it became his belief that this world was very disposable and the spans short. His opinion was not of anything good nor bad but simply the truth. The machines-he noted-though at the behest of their master's voice, are scorned, and jealous as all hell.
And so the tale is told while surfing on the board of Shabazz Palaces, with its sturdy base angled for takeoff on a new trajectory. There is new blood and space and room to be different and have different assets and different art and different ways to talk and also open up some space inside to do something new. There are pages and there are drawings, and color and faces and inked dialogues written in ancient futuristic hieroglyph. There are scales and there is melody and there are Sunny days and there is Darkness, but that-it should be noted-to the Palaceer is not a lack of illumination or brightness. Maybe it is dark, but in it is always optimism and joy, a bright darkness and a full, hopeful one as well.1. Welcome to Quazarz

Lese MajestyHerein bumps and soars Lese Majesty, the new sonic action of Shabazz

Lese Majesty is not a launching pad for the group's fan base increasing

Quazarz: Born on a Gangster Starspeaking of air and darkness, Born on a Gangster Star cameinto the world in a big damn hurry, like nightfall on an island. You can see it happening, but then again it's so gradual that thenext thing you know-it's dark.
Imbued with the energy and ideas from all the creative embersfloating in the atmosphere like fireflies, Shabazz Palacesrecorded this entire album over the course of two weeks withBlood in Seattle. New gear and new equipment disintegratedcomfort zones into dust and a new path appeared in the rubble.
Herein the Palaceer continues the tale of Quazar, a sentientbeing from somewhere else, an observer sent here to Amurdercato chronicle and explore as a musical emissary. What he finds inour world is a cutthroat place, a landscape where someone likehim could never quite feel comfortable amidst all the brutalityand alternative facts and death masquerading as connectivity.
Inspired by days on end spent in the waves-water and light,both-of Southern California, the work came to the Palaceer in aflash, like being picked up by something and carried. Alwaysdribbling with his head up, he can see what's going on aroundhim and react to it, rather than starting in a certain direction andhoping to achieve something upon arrival.
What's good?-the kids ask. What does it even mean, and whatdoes it even matter? Who is behind these choices? We are all ofus sitting under a waterfall of all. this. shit. But it's the excessthat is casting us into ruts.
The Palaceer stays away from the fleeting and the superficialnonessential. Stay away from your device-your phantomlimb-and stay away from your image-your phantom self; thatis his decree. Considering the motions behind the things you liketo consume artistically, rather than just the way something looksor sounds, and thinking in layers, and trying to be more considerateand not so self-oriented-this is his medicine for combat.
Born on a Gangster Star flirts with a pop sensibility, but throughthe prism of Shabazz Palaces's fire and fury. For the Palaceer, that sense is all about how the groove is moving, and thesupernatural telepathy that occurs amongst his cohort. Appearinghere, in body or in spirit, are Julian Casablancas, Thundercat,Darrius Willrich, Gamble and Huff, Loud Eyes Lou, Thaddillac,Ahmir, Jon Kirby, Sunny Levine, and Blood. The storybelongs to Quazarz, but the air and darkness belong to us.

TheeSatisfaction are Stasia Irons and Catherine Harris-White. The pair live/laugh/love/dance and create in Seattle, WA. They write, produce and perform their own material: funk-psychedelic feminista sci-fi epics with the warmth and depth of Black Jazz and Sunday morning soul, frosted with icy raps that evoke equal parts Elaine Brown, Ursula Rucker and Q-Tip. Immediately embraced for their singular sound, unflinching commentary, and immortal groove, Stas and Cat made friends, fans and family from coast to coast via their own immaculate grind; a combo of sharp digital hustle and self-booked, self-financed tours that connected them to like minds everywhere.
Even crowds with nary a right foot between them find the steps when indoctrinated with TheeSatisfactions unorthodox but right-on-time rhythms. Like their comrades Shabazz Palaces (you may have heard these two on the 2011 Shabazz Palaces album Black Up), TheeSatisfaction came upon the scene with lovingly handmade CDs of their self-released albums, the first of which was 2008s Thats Weird. All has been in preparation for the album theyve envisioned for years, their debut full-length on Sub Pop Records, Awe Naturale. Tip-on single sleeve with colored vinyl and MP3 coupon.1. Awe

Beak & Claw (Discontinued) (On Sale)Comes with a digital download card! Stranger things have happened, but rarely do they make such beautiful music. The three esses that comprise the enigmatically titled s / s / s are as follows: Sufjan Stevens, he of the Fifty States Project and various baroque folk-pop opuses; Serengeti, the wry-witted rapper known for in-depth on-record character studies; and Son Lux, silken-voiced singer, studio wizard and singular beatsmith. The project's roots reach back to 2009's Dark Was the Night compilation, where Stevens and Geti met over a Buck 65 remix of a song written by psych-folkie Castanets. Continuing in the spirit of (unlikely) collaboration, the pair passed beats and raps back and forth, eventually enlisting Son Lux to dream Beak and Claw into fruition.
While this momentous EP comprises a mere four songs, each covers an immense stretch of sonic territory and emotional range. At six minutes, "Museum Day" may be the most adventurous and also the most satisfying, opening with a swath of AutoTuned heartache courtesy of Stevens, cresting with the darkly detailed raps of Geti, and closing in a hail of crashing cymbals, orchestral glitch and haunted coos from Son Lux. "Beyond Any Doubt" exchanges that taut splendor for deeper grooves whose farthest-out moments bring to mind Shabazz Palaces' cracked futurisms, albeit spiked with a falsetto'd pop hook. Fuzzy bass and industrial clang crash into lines about unrealized escapism and unpaid bills. Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond lends "If This Is Real" its Andrews Sister-like chorus, an immaculate contrast to the aural chaos that eventually overtakes the song. Meanwhile, Doseone (Subtle, Themselves) lends a similar buoyancy to "Octomom," an electrospackled, mostly spoken piece that plays like a Laurie Anderson track for the reality television generation (also featuring jaw harp and harmonica by Ohio folk vet Hal Walker). Because of its subject matter, this final song goes a long way to illustrating Beak and Claw's strange magic and, ultimately, why s / s / s works at all. Geti's humor and humanity are matched by playfulness and poignancy every step of the way. In the end, sublime confluence prevails.1. Museum Day

bounces. So too should you
Neo-Ancient Nubian aphorism.
Once in Time, in an emerald veld of near solitude, Two met.
One Cat and One Stas. Born under different signs. Destined to shine under
the same moons.
They agreed, upon meeting, that the old force fields rooted in sonics were
necessary once again.
They commenced to make.
It was cold out. They made. It became warmer. They continued. The orb
shone from above with intensity. They continued to make. The trees shifted
hues and shed...They made.
In this din, this mantra of making, they became Sisters of a very specific rite.
Ethereal. The foundation of empires lost and regained.
In this din the force field grew.
The first time I saw them they glowed. They were palpable amongst the flat.
Regal in a manner that is now mostly forgotten.
Not generic in that description either. Specific.
As in the Queens of some Where. The Queens of some Thing.
Sorceress Queens who dealt in aural incantation architecture.
Possessors of keys to deeper feelings. Unlockers of healing.
I became a devotee to the sonic altars they had, and continue to construct.
One Cat. One Stas. Past Lovers. Present Friends. Future Deities.
THEESatisfaction. Exalted heavenward (outward, spaceward) upon the aurally

Shabazz Palaces: Live at Third Man Records
Live Record, Recorded Direct-To-cetate In January Of 2015
Shabazz Palaces is Ishmael Butler (Digible Planets) and Tendai Maraire, and their Lese Majesty was easily the most spun record on the Third Man office turntable in 2014. Our admiration reached new heights when we had the honor of hosting the Seattle-based duo for a live performance and direct-to-acetate recording in our Nashville Blue Room last year. In Third Man consigliere Ben Swank's own words, ''Shabazz Palaces' obstinately original oeuvre emanates from a fully formed higher conscious, they plant their flag in the outermost realms of the hip hop global soundscape where vibrations throb into beat-heavy explorations, chrome covered constellations of higher reveries each offering its own sonic boom.''
Ishmael and Tendai announced recently that they will be supporting Radiohead on their upcoming LA dates, and the group released a new video featuring footage from the Earth Science and Remote Sensing Unit, NASA's Johnson Space Center, and the Hubble and Cassini space missions for their track ''Dawn In Luxor'' just last week, We agree... you'd better go ahead and watch here.

Light Information (Pre-Order)Nobody cared about their old heads, because the new ones work just fine now, don't they?.... they have the same size mouth and eyes.
The song Old Heads is a sci-fi space anthem to technology that constantly replaces itself, proving both necessary and unnecessary at the same time. It's also a jangly pop gem, a trip through the fantastical that is ultimately warm and relatable. This remarkable coexistence is one of many achievements of Chad VanGaalen's Light Information, his sixth record on Sub Pop.
For an album that's about not feeling comfortable with really anything, as VanGaalen says, Light Information is nonetheless a vivid, welcoming journey through future worlds and relentless memories. The rich soundscapes and sometimes jarring imagery could only come from the mind of a creative polymath--an accomplished visual artist, animator, director, and producer,VanGaalen has scored television shows, designed puppet characters for Adult Swim, directed videos for Shabazz Palaces, Strand of Oaks,METZ, Dan Deacon, and The Head and the Heart, and produced records for Women, Alvvays, and others.
While alienation has always been a theme of VanGaalen's music,Light Information draws on a new kind of wisdom--and anxiety--gained as he watches his kids growing up. Being a parent has given me a sort of alternate perspective, worrying about exposure to a new type of consciousness that's happening through the internet, he says. Throughout the dark-wave reverb of Light Information are stories of paranoia, disembodiment, and isolation--but there's also playfulness, empathy, and intimacy.
The product of six years' work, going back even before 2014's Shrink Dust, Light Information emerged from the experimental instruments that fill VanGaalen's Calgary garage studio. As always, VanGaalen wrote, played, and produced all of the music on Light Information(save Ryan Bourne's bass part on Mystery Elementals and vocals onStatic Shape from his young daughters Ezzy and Pip), and designed the cover art.1.
