    Epitaph is pleased to welcome This Wild Life to the roster. This Wild Life will release their debut album Clouded in 2014.


    Hailing from Long Beach, CA, This Wild Life is duo Kevin Jordan and Anthony Del Grosso. Jordan and Del Gross grew up in the tightknit DIY punk scene in Long Beach. They quickly became friends after working at the same musical instrument store, bonding over music of their teens. The conversations were about hardcore, punk and scream bands such as Thursday, The Used, and Senses Fail. Soon enough, they started their own pop-punk band and made music together as This Wild Life. They played fast, they played loud and they didn't stand out from the crowd until they did the least "punk" thing possible. It was also bolder than anything in the punk rock rulebook: they got quiet and played acoustically.


    The music itself connected with fans, even as it surprised them. They take pride in making music based in hardcore and punk rock, but with wider appeal. In contrast to the harsh music that This Wild Life grew up on, Jordan finds inspiration for his vocals outside the hardcore punk world. "Sara Bareilles is one of my favorites. Maybe people wouldn't expect that. Or maybe they would," he laughs.


    A big part of who they are as a band is to remain true to their DIY punk ethic. After shows are played, tweets responded to and comments acknowledged online. The band put in the work to gain the support of their fan base. Now, This Wild Life has an army of 80K YouTube subscribers with videos of over 2.75 million views.


    Clouded is their debut full-length and was recorded with Aaron Marsh of Copeland. Clouded maintains the core attributes of their sound - Jordan's vulnerable, expressive lyrics, DelGrosso's nimble fingerpicking - while pushing themselves towards more ambitious sounds. "We tried out a string section, pianos, different kinds of guitars, we didn't want to limit ourselves," Jordan notes.


    Clouded is the triumphant result of years marked by small triumphs, big struggles and countless floor shows, bringing This Wild Life's heartfelt, melodic and acoustic punk-rock to a bigger audience they've earned.

    Lost In The Dream

    Lost In The Dream is the third album by Philadelphia band The War on Drugs,but in many ways,it feels
    like the first. Around the release of the 2011 breakthrough Slave Ambient,Adam Granduciel spent the
    bulk of two years on the road, touring through progressively larger rock clubs, festival stages and late night television slots. As these dozen songs shifted and grew beyond what they'd been in the studio, The War on Drugs became a bona fide rock 'n'roll band.


    That essence drives Lost In The Dream, a 10-song set produced by Granduciel and longtime engineer Jeff
    Zeigler. In the past, Granduciel built the core of songs largely by himself. But these tunes were played
    and recorded by the group that had solidified so much on the road: Dave Hartley, (his favorite bassist
    in the world), who had played a bit on The War on Drugs' 2008 debut Wagonwheel Blues, and pianist
    Robbie Bennett, a multi-instrumentalist who contributed to Slave Ambient. This unit spent eight
    months bouncing between a half-dozen different studios that stretched from the mountains of North
    Carolina to the boroughs of New York City. Only then did Granduciel-the proudly self-professed
    gearhead, and unrepentant perfectionist-add and subtract, invite guests and retrofit pieces. He
    sculpted these songs into a musical rescue mission, through and then beyond personal despair and
    anxiety. Lost In The Dream represents the trials of the trip and the triumphs of its destination.


    "I wanted there to be a singular voice, but I wanted it to be a project of great friends. Everyone in the
    band cares about it so much,"he says."That is the crux of it-growing up,dealing with life,having close
    friends, helping each other get by. That is what the record's all about.


    As such, these tunes reveal a careful and thrilling reinvention of the sound that's become The War on
    Drugs' trademark. The signature meld of long tones and scatter shot layers still stands, with phantom
    drum machines and organ lines dotting the musical middle distance all across Lost In The Dream.Note
    the way the keys whisper against the guitar's growl as the tempestuous"An Ocean in Between the Waves"
    approaches pentecostal heat. Hear how,when a sharp and hard riff cuts into the inescapable chorus of
    "Red Eyes," synthetic strings and baritone saxophone shape a soft, infinite bed beneath it. But there's a
    new found directness to these tunes, too. Granduciel's voice steps out from behind its typical web of
    effects-louder now, with more experiences to share and more steel from having survived them. He
    sounds less like a prismatic reflection of a rock bandleader, more like the emboldened actualization of
    that idea. With its crisp, unencumbered delivery, "Eyes to the Wind" becomes the album's centerpiece
    and the group's new anthem.This is Granduciel's to-date triumph and the exact moment where Lost In
    The Dream moves from a tale of confusion to one of resolve. Throughout most of the record, grips
    loosen and senses fail, memories are mourned and expectations are abandoned. But after the Rolling
    Thunder lift of "Eyes to the Wind," Granduciel finds new contentment and direction. Anguish

    Dormant Heart

    'Dormant' is not a word that you can associate with Reading's metallers SYLOSIS - the band who have in the past few years alone toured with LAMB OF GOD, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, DEVIL DRIVER and TRIVIUM. As well as playing huge festivals across the globe such as Sonisphere, Wacken, Graspop and Pukkelpop.


    Dormant Heart is not a peaceful album, it's a powerful force, unleashing anger against every day injustice and a sleeping society that lets these things wash over them. Frontman Josh Middleton explains: "The title refers to people going through life on autopilot and being one of the herd. How a lot of people simply accept the way things are just because it's 'tradition' as opposed to taking a good look at the world around you and thinking for yourself. Sometimes there are catalysts that happen and change our perspective or consciousness "


    One might take this catalyst as being representative of the driving accident that SYLOSIS had on a US tour with TRIVIUM and DEVIL DRIVER in September 2013. Luckily the band escaped the RV accident without major injuries but had to withdraw from the rest of the American shows. It was a big influence on the writing of their fourth album. This isn't a band that lets the tough gruelling schedule of touring wear them down though and once they'd been patched up and recovered they were back on the road in the UK. The incident did however provide food for thought as to how the band has to some extent a constant element of danger and personal sacrifice.


    SYLOSIS began tracking the album back in March 2014 working away secretly alongside touring commitments. Josh Middleton took a step up on this album producing it himself with the help of engineer Scott Atkins. The album was mastered by TESSERACT guitarist Acle Kahney. Josh says of the recording process "It was great doing some of the recording with Scott again. We've got a good working relationship and he's really dedicated to what he does. We like to strive for a very earthy and organic sound. It adds to the human element and brings out the intensity and vibe in the music."


    Guitars and vocals were recorded at Wizard Sound Studios in the band's hometown Reading. Drums were recorded in May at Monkey Puzzle Studios by original drummer Rob Callard who parted ways with SYLOSIS in September 2014 due to time restraints. BLEED FROM WITHINs Ali Richardson is now drumming for the band permanently after filling in for some live shows on the bands spring 2014 tour.


    Dormant Heart retains the distinctive SYLOSIS sound; a mixture of intense heavy guitar riffs, breakdowns, thudding rhythm and Middleton's growl. It's difficult to tie-down the band into a specific type of metal genre. Stomping opener 'Where The Wolves Come To Die' unleashes an aggressive start whilst 'Leech' provides those breakdowns and epic choruses. 'Mercy' demonstrates the mix of galloping rhythm and melodic guitar riffs whilst Josh fiercely declares 'there's no redemption'. Aptly named closer track 'Quiescent' provides over 9 minutes of solemn prog showing a less forceful side of the band it's ballad like in nature, with lyrics questioning Maybe the flames are all they have?' It's softer in dynamic but the sense of impending doom remains 'Fail to rescue// I can see// Now the line is drawn at our feet'.


    Josh summarises the record as their best work to date. "It's the most pissed off, aggressive and intense album we've done, yet it still retains the epic, progressive and melodic side we're also known for. It's a very gloomy and atmospheric album. We've been through a lot as a band and individuals and we've made our darkest album to date."

    The final minutes of Black Clouds' debut album did not have a happy
    ending: In a spoken word coda, Clutch's Neil Fallon repeatedly informs the
    listener that "everything is not going to be OK," and despite the fact this
    had already been well communicated by the album itself, this was the first
    time that language had been used to articulate its quasi-nihilism. For these
    Washington D.C. post-rock and metal experimentalists, it was a rare, but
    vivid show-me-and-tell-me moment.


    Which is to say that Dreamcation, Black Clouds' sophomore effort and Collect
    Records debut, is a significantly different kind of record. That sense of doom,
    once mined for its power, is more effectively harnessed for a nuanced energy-
    the darkness curbed just enough to let the light in-and the result is alternately
    aggressive and ambient, often in the same song, and sometimes in the same
    part: "Carcosa," for one, takes equal cues from funeral and ascension, and
    "Some Of Us Are Meant To Disappear" somehow pummels you into a warm
    hug. A smart and measured progression, Black Clouds finds itself at their most
    introspective on Dreamcation, and if this album's finalÉ eschews language
    altogether for a wash of subtle chords and a blissfully ecstatic drone, it's only
    because-perhaps-everything is going to be OK after all.

    THE NEXT BIG THING. Such a label serves at once as a curse and a blessing, for messianic crowns come studded with thorns, and chalices emblazoned with this inscription are often tainted with poison. Custodians of the title can implode under the weight of expectation, or fail to bottle further the magic of that first hit single.


    Not so for English art-rock trio London Grammar. Hannah Reid, Dot Major and Dan Rothman have been careful to avoid the dangers of over-exposure in the nine months since first single "Hey Now" seared itself into the collective consciousness of the blogosphere, instead releasing work after work of gradually escalating beauty from the safety of the shadows.


    That was until Disclosure dropped their album Settle, at which point London Grammar vocalist Hannah Reid came to wider attention on sweeping album closer "Help Me Lose My Mind," where her spine-tingling soulful singing combined with the wash of swooning synths and downbeat 80's percussion. It will come as no surprise to fans of this track to learn that Reid's magnificent vocals are integral to London Grammar's sound, serving as the perfect accompaniment to the band's discreet production and minimalist instrumentation.


    The same words will be used ceaselessly to describe Reid's vocals in coming weeks - "haunting", "brooding", "ethereal". Yet none of these terms adequately conveys the way her voice melts and evolves to suit the temperament and melody of each song on If You Wait, flowing like molten gold on "Interlude", or acquiring the varied textures of a vast swathe of satin and silk on "Nightcall". Her vocal is always underscored by an enduring brittle beauty and an underlying otherworldliness, as if she honed her craft singing amidst the forests of Lothlórien, or some far-flung corner of Westeros.


    Though her voice may be otherworldly, the thematic concerns of the album are very much rooted in this world - youth's timeless preoccupation with finding not only love but the nature of ourselves. These soundscapes and the lyrics that populate them are characterised by broken hearts, fractured dreams and people falling in and out of love. Perhaps the most telling lyric of all is on "Wasting My Young Years", with the heart-breaking concession of "I've heard it takes some time to get it right".


    The album's first single and opening track "Hey Now" has lost none of its grandeur and remains as devastatingly beautiful as it did when released at the tail-end of 2012. It's the main track on If You Wait that justifies the comparisons with The XX - especially in terms of how the band forges the space and atmosphere from reverb-tinged percussion and Rothman's discreet, almost-spectral guitars. "Wasting My Young Years" further showcases how perfectly the band balance the interplay between Reid's vocal and the twinkling keys and subtle instrumentation that floats around it, allowing it to drive the song and dictate proceedings but never once to feel overbearing.


    Latest single "Strong" mirrors the intricately weaved threadwork of sounds and elaborately crafted sense of space showcased on the opening track, but utilises a more hypnotic vocal from Reid that manages to sound simultaneously heart-rending and inspiring. Elsewhere "Interlude" is as refined a paean to love and devotion as you will hear all year, matching dual melancholic piano lines and subtly building percussion to Reid's sublime wistful singing.


    There is not a single weak track, but amongst the many highlights is a spellbinding cover of French house artist Kavinsky's "Nightcall". There's a particularly gorgeous moment around the two-minute-thirty-second mark when the instrumentation is peeled away and, for a few seconds, you think the song will end - before Reid's dazzling vocal is re-introduced amidst a haze of swirling keys. It's nothing short of transcendent. Also, the flawless sequencing leads to an album that begs you to drink in its beauty by listening to it from beginning to end.


    This is an enthralling, stunning, deeply emotive album that perfectly marries understated electronica to sublime vocals and melodies. In a year dominated by titanic LPs, London Grammar have not only made the most perfectly formed debut album of the year - they've made one of the best LPs, period. [A-]

    In 2005, at the age of 14, Nic Hessler created the alias Catwalk to write, record and
    perform his music. Armed with Wipers and Roy Orbison records, an 8-track recorder and a
    garage, Nic set out to make Catwalk the next great guitar-oriented California band like many
    teenagers before him. Two tiny run 7" singles on the now defunct Yay! imprint soon appeared,
    making the rounds through independent record stores and mail order distributors. This led to
    the 18-year-old Nic to sign to the also new and young label, Captured Tracks. Two C/T 7"
    releases in 2010 and 2011 followed, leading up to a full-fledged Catwalk LP and tour in 2011.
    Press reaction was swift and, as interest was grew, Nic garnered support in his hometown of
    Orange County, CA to assemble a tour line-up for the LP. However, none of that would ever
    happen.


    Around this time, Nic was struck with an ailment that kept him sidelined for quite sometime:
    Guillain-BarrÉ Syndrome. No walk in the park, GBS prevented Nic from playing guitar,
    leaving him partially paralyzed for the bulk of this lost period. While this was obviously detrimental
    for Nic and Catwalk, strangely, it may have helped the musician Nic Hessler's career.


    Now ditching the moniker of a hypothetical band, Nic re-emerges in 2015, healthy and reinvigorated,
    with a more fully-formed and ambitious sound: the sound of Soft Connections, his
    debut LP years in the making, though he's now just 23. Soft Connections bridges the songwriting
    influences of the vintage American powerpop of Emmit Rhodes and Alex Chilton, along
    with UK giants like The Kinks and XTC. Tracks like Hearts, Repeating and I Feel Again-two
    classic singles in the radio sense of the word-show the maturity in craftsmanship Nic's been
    honing these past four years.


    The making of Soft Connections was a lengthy process that took place during a crucial period
    of musical growth and self-exploration. It's an optimistic and introspective record about being
    in-and-out of feeling - on the brink of a personal breakthrough, yet still seeking direction,
    purpose, truth and permanence. Anchored by the Catwalk favorite (Please) Don't Break
    Me - a song that, at one point, could very well have launched Nic into indie celebdom -

    Warren Zevon is a Rock & Roll album recorded in 1975 and released in 1976 by the artist of the same name. The album features guest appearances of artists like Jackson Browne, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, Phil Everly, Don Henley and Glenn Frey, Bonnie Raitt and many more.


    Warren Zevon was a ten-year music industry veteran who had written songs for The Turtles, backed up Phil Everly, done years of session work, and been befriended by Jackson Browne by the time he cut his self-titled album in 1976. Zevon sure didn't think (or write) like any of his pals in the Eagles or Fleetwood Mac; Zevon's music was full of blood, bile, and mean-spirited irony, and the glossy surfaces of Jackson Browne's production failed to disguise the bitter heart of the songs on Warren Zevon.


    For all their darkness, Zevon's songs also possessed a steely intelligence, a winning wit, and an unusually sophisticated melodic sense, and he certainly made the most of the high-priced help who backed him on the album. This was the album that confirmed he was a major talent, and it remains a black-hearted Pop delight.

    Mastered from the original master tapes on Mobile Fidelity's world-renowned mastering system and pressed at RTI, this restored 45RPM analog version lays bare the catch-all ambience of the sessions as well as the unguarded emotionalism that fueled them. Largely captured at one unruly New York studio date, many songs are first-take arrangements, experienced on this reissue in a raw, realistic fashion that allows chords to swell, vocals to naturally carry, and percussion to span a seemingly bridge-wide soundstage. Accenting instruments-bouzouki, accordion, mandolin, violin, congas, piano-gain their own space and color the music with intriguing textures.     Surging with a nothing-to-lose disposition, Desire juggles myriad styles and owns up to no single theme. Disappointment and loss related to Dylan's broken relationship surfaces directly and metaphorically, but the album isn't mired in depression or sadness. More often than not, it howls, the sprawling canvas needlepointed with complexity and diversity. In pairing with lyricist Jacques Levy, Dylan invites narrative collaboration he never again repeated, as well as an eclecticism that gives the effort its fascinating charm.


    Desire finds Dylan at an evocative peak.     Fantastic Negrito is the incarnation of a musician who is reborn after going through a lot of awful shit. In fact, the name Fantastic Negrito represents his third rebirth, literally coming back from death this time. The narrative on this man is as important as the sound, because the narrative is the sound. Songs born from a long hard life channeled through black roots music. Slide guitar, drums, piano. Urgent, desperate, edgy. Fantastic Negrito is the story of a man who struggled to make it, who got it, and who lost it all. For anyone who ever felt like it was over yet hoped it wasn't, this is your music; blues harnessed, forged in realness. For anyone who ever considered getting their old high-school band back together, this is your inspiration. These are singular songs by a true musician who writes and produces. They are his fuel as he embarks on the third comeback of his life.

    The first life ('who am I and where am I going?'). Fantastic Negrito was raised in an orthodox Muslim household. His father was a Somali-Caribbean immigrant who mostly played traditional African music. When, at the age of 12, Negrito's family moved from Massachusetts to Oakland, he was hit with an intense culture shock. Oakland in 1980s was a million miles from Negrito's conservative childhood. He went from Arab chants to Funkadelic in one day, living in the heart of one of the wildest, most infamous, most vibrant black communities in the nation. Shit was extra real in Oakland.

    By the time he was 20, Negrito had taught himself to play every instrument he could get his hands on. He was recording music, but he was also caught up in street shit. This went on for several years until a near death encounter with masked gunmen. After that Negrito packed his bags and headed to LA, armed with a demo on cassette.

    The second life ('I want to be a star I think'). It didn't take long for Negrito to find himself entrenched in the 'Hollywood' lifestyle; clubs and bitches and bullshit politics that have nothing to do with great music. Negrito signed with a big time manager and soon after that, a million dollar deal at Interscope and soon after that, creative death.

    The record deal was a disaster. Gangsta rap was ruling the airwaves and Negrito was in the wrong place at the wrong era. Negrito came out of the deal with a failed album and his confidence gutted. He was infected by the constant emphasis on 'what would sell'; which looks, hooks and gimmicks would attract an audience. He lost all sense of himself. The songs stopped coming to him, so he quit. He sold all of his shit and he quit.

    In 2000, Negrito was in a near fatal car accident that put him in a coma. For four weeks it was touch and go. Because his muscles atrophied while bedridden, he had to go through months of frustrating physical therapy to regain use of his legs. Rods were placed throughout his body. And worst of all, his playing hand was mutilated. Though he rehabbed intensely for several years, the damage was permanent. In 2008, he returned home to Oakland.

    The third life (the birth of Negrito). Back in Oakland, Negrito forgot about life as a musician. He settled down, planted vegetables, raised his own chickens, and made money growing weed. He also settled into being a man, on his own, clear of the distractions of wanting to be a star. This is when his specific POV of the world came into focus. His conservative Muslim values melded with the liberal, multi-cultural world of Oakland. The cynicism that comes from struggle made room for the hope that comes from cheating death. He truly knew who he was. He was confident about his place in the world because he understood it as much as any man can. And then his son was born.

    With his son's entrance into the world, all the creative energy Negrito bottled for years came rushing out. His musical choices were sharp and without doubt. He began recording without the hindrances that come with chasing trends. Fuck what's hot now, what moves me? Negrito turned to the original DNA of all American music, the Blues. The beating life had given him primed him to channel his literal and musical forefathers: the Blues musicians of the Delta.

    For Fantastic Negrito, derivative is the devil so to ensure his sound is his own, every chord comes from a place of immediacy. Immediacy opens the door for instinct. Instinct is God's tool that makes an artist into an individual. Negrito leaves the original sounds of Lead Belly and Skip Woods intact and builds bridges to modernity by looping and sampling his own live instruments.

    Lover, Beloved: Songs From An Evening With Carson McCullers

    When Suzanne Vega first discovered the novelist and short story writer Carson McCullers as a teenager, she thought, "If I ever want to play a character at any point in the future, I could play this woman." That time has arrived. On Lover, Beloved: Songs From An Evening With Carson McCullers, Vega inhabits McCullers' extraordinary character and renders the life of a woman who, revolted by the politics and racism of her upbringing in the American South, arrived in New York in her early twenties and became one of the literary lights of the 20th century. In such esteemed books as The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter (1940), Reflections in a Golden Eye (1941) and The Ballad of the Sad CafÉ (1951), McCullers used the South as a lens through which to view the painful, nearly always unrequited, search for love in a world that often punishes individual self-expression and rewards repression and emotional compromise. McCullers battled those limits in her life as well as her work - a personal heroism that makes her, in Vega's view, a figure of great contemporary significance. She was an instinctive rebel whose message of personal freedom resonates profoundly in our own insurgent age, nearly fifty years after her death at the age of fifty in 1967.


    "I feel that McCullers' ideas and thoughts are very modern," Vega says, "and she incarnates them in a way that other authors don't. She tried to live them and paid a price for it. She would refer to herself in a kind of transgender way - she would say things like, 'I was born a man' -- and she probably was bisexual even if she didn't always act on it. She was one of the first females to write about civil rights and the struggles of blacks in the South. Also, she suffered several strokes and was disabled for pretty much the second half of her life. To use today's parlance, her life and work embodied human rights on just about every level - race, gender, trans, queer, disabled, youth."


    The ten songs on Lover, Beloved are part of a two-act play in which Vega and another actress perform the role of McCullers at two historical moments that bookend her career: the first, set in 1941, when The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter propelled her to literary fame, and the second shortly before her death, as she movingly reflects on her life and work. There are also plans to perform it as a one-woman show. Vega wrote the script, and co-wrote eight songs with Duncan Sheik, the singer-songwriter whose keen theatrical sense helped create the Broadway hit show Spring Awakening and the current groundbreaking musical, American Psycho. (Two additional songs, "Carson's Blues" and "The Ballad of Miss Amelia," were co-written by Vega and pianist/composer Michael Jefry Stevens.) In songs like "New York Is My Destination," "We of Me" and "Lover, Beloved," you can hear the signature cool detachment of Vega's singing and revel in the characteristically incisive observation of her lyrics, many of which deftly draw on McCullers' own writing.


    But the songs' elastic melody lines, loping rhythms, idiosyncratic instrumentation (including clarinet, harmonium, banjo, ukulele, trombone and accordion), and surprising arrangements (by guitarist extraordinaire Gerry Leonard, who also produced the album) are like nothing we've heard from Vega before. "It was great working with Duncan Sheik," Vega says. "All you have to do is give him the barest bones of an idea and then he delivers this fabulous piece of music." For "Annemarie," an aching ballad about an androgynous adventurer with whom both McCullers and her husband fell disastrously in love, Sheik delivered a lovely, simple melody that, Vega says, "practically made me cry. I couldn't believe how beautiful it was. I wanted something with all that yearning, and I love what he came up with." For "New York Is My Destination," which describes the youthful McCullers' vision of her future as a celebrated novelist, Vega says she wanted "something classic, something that sounded like Rodgers and Hammerstein, something glamorous," and, once again, Sheik delivered a melody that perfectly complemented the heady excitement of Vega's lyrics.


    Overall, Lover, Beloved finds a sound that exists outside of time. It's traditional enough to suit the iconic quality of its subject; clever enough to capture her originality and daring; and contemporary enough to help establish McCullers as an avatar for this century as well as the preceding one. Most of the instrumentation is acoustic, but, in particular, Gerry Leonard's evocative, atmospheric electric guitar playing lifts the music into another, more imaginative realm. That McCullers herself was an accomplished, classically trained pianist - and that the lyricism of her writing reflects that innate musicality - only further enhances the shivery dynamic between words and music on the album.


    In order to realize the theatrical quality of this project, Vega, with Sheik's encouragement and assistance, also handled her vocals in a different way. "Duncan really pushed me out of my comfort zone," Vega says. "I was shocked at how high he wanted me to sing. But he was like, 'No, no - you can hit that.'" Sheik's goal was to achieve a kind of sonic drama in Vega's vocals, "as much drama as he could squeeze out of me," she says. "It works for the character. McCullers is kind of childlike, and you can believe her singing in that naïve, simple way. I'm pushed beyond my limits in both the low notes and the high notes, and also the emotion. I definitely feel as if I was being pushed beyond what I usually do."


    Unquestionably, rendering a character like McCullers in words and in sound represented a serious creative challenge. All the songs on the album attempt to capture the innermost feelings of a writer who was highly ambitious, immensely complicated and fiercely dedicated to her conception of herself and her work. She was simultaneously shy, introverted and wildly provocative, as "Carson's Blues," the album's opening song, announces: "A childish liar/A devilish bitch/I can be innocent and charming/And suddenly switch." "Harper Lee," a song Vega describes as "upbeat and bitchy," chronicles McCullers' sense of her place in the literary pantheon - a spot, in her view, well above the wildly successful author of To Kill a Mockingbird. ("I'd like to kill more than just that mockingbird," she sings.) "Instant of the Hour After" and "We of Me" all explore the loving and loathing, the sexual adventurism and missed emotional connections, that swirled inextricably in McCullers' marriage to a bisexual man who shared her literary ambitions but was never able to realize them. On the title track, Vega limns the dizzying dance of unsatisfied desire at the heart of McCullers' work: "The lover pursues,/The beloved one flees Each one alone/In the land of the heart."


    "12 Mortal Men" indicts the provincialism and brutal racism of Columbus, Georgia, where McCullers grew up. "The Ballad of Miss Emilia" essentially recounts the plot of McCullers' novella, The Ballad of the Sad CafÉ, a saga, like so much of her writing, of failed joinings, loneliness, and proud, if isolated, survival. By the time the album concludes with "Carson's Last Supper," McCullers has abandoned the ideal of erotic desire in favor of a more universal love that could embrace all the various characters in her books and the many people in her life - as well as, perhaps most importantly, the ravaging contradictions within herself that both drove her art and caused so much hardship in her life.


    With Lover, Beloved: Songs From An Evening With Carson McCullers, Suzanne Vega achieves a new peak in her already distinguished career. With these songs and the play they inhabit, she hopes that "a new generation of people will discover Carson McCullers, that they will realize how cool she is and how compellingly her work can speak to them.     Twig Harper is a performer and electronic sound artist who began playing guerrilla-and punk-style shows with Scheme, Mini-Systems and Nautical Almanac in the milleu of Wolf Eyes, Andrew W.K. and others involved in the Bulb/Hanson 90s noise/total music movement in Ann Arbor, MI. Moving first to Chicago and then to Baltimore, he has toured widely in the US (five multi-month tours) and Europe (twice) with Carly Ptak and others. With Ptak, he has released many recordings and co-founded the influential Tarantula Hill venue-compound. His music and performances have been characterized generally by an incredible sense of trickery and playfulness, even foolishness, but in earnest and with careful consideration.



    Daniel Higgs is a musician and artist from Baltimore, Maryland on whose behalf superlatives are destined to fail. It's not that his artistic output spanning three decades, numerous albums, books of poetry and collections of drawings simply eludes classification, it defies it. Higgs is known for his work as the sole lyricist and frontman of the band Lungfish, a four-piece enshrined as one of America's last true folk bands, and Higgs anointed as a patron saint to artistic purity. That the band has undertaken this pursuit in the guise of a humble rock outfit, in the absence of any public relations fanfare, metanarrative, or manifesto has been enough to endear them to tens of thousands. In recent years, Higgs has released a number of solo outings that can only be described as the ultimate in isolation, worlds away from the hypnotic, communal rock of his band.
