    Subculture

Legendary two-tone artist The Selecter release their new studio LP, Subculture, stateside this October 2nd, 2015 on DMF via Red Eye. The record debuted at #5 in the UK Top 40 Indie Album Chart, sharing the top ten alongside Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, Jamie XX, Alabama Shakes, and Hudson Mohawke. Formed in the summer of 1979 in Coventry, England, The Selecter is fronted by the original two vocalists - Pauline Black and Arthur "Gaps" Hendrickson.

Since the release of their debut single "The Selecter" (the b side to The Special AKA's "Gangsters" on 2 Tone Records), followed by chart topping LPs Too Much Pressure and Celebrate The Bullet, the band has become a worldwide phenomenon, influencing everyone from Gwen Stefani to John Lennon. Rather than rest on their laurels of 2-Tone's high past, The Selecter have committed to push things forward and continue to evolve their sound. The band is thrilled to share their latest piece of work, Subculture, with North American audiences this fall.

    Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2

Aphex Twins 1994 masterpiece Selected Ambient Works Volume II includes barely anything resembling a beat or any sign of typical song structure, yet the album continues to garner adulation generally reserved for holy music. Fans have been testifying on its behalf for nearly two decades, as if it were capable of curing ills or healing the soul. Its synthetic construction belies the intuitive, human, melancholic and uplifting nature of the music.

Some have speculated the album was intended by Aphex Twins Richard D. James as a farce, as if its Über-minimalism was a joke played on an electronic community that relied so heavily on the beat; an expectation-defying statement from ambient-houses young hero. The album induces varied responses and often from the same person. A listener may go from being incredulous to drenched in tears within the span of a single track. Music critic Frank Owen described the music as veering between an eerie beauty and an almost nightmarish desolation. James himself described it as like standing in a power station on acid.

The albums raw emotional power is built upon the influences of Brian Eno, Erik Satie, Steve Reich, Terry Riley and The Orb. Each of its tracks has an elegiac and desolate feel far removed from the tooth-rattling, drill-n-bass or abstract electronica for which James was originally known. The soft, nimble flow leaves one in a tranquilized state. Throughout the album, James resists the temptation to layer the sound with beats or samples. Instead, he relies on swathes of sound and harmonics and almost-implied pulses. When the music does incorporate subtle industrial sounds, rhythmic drums or muted samples, it is only to affect a menacing feel in the textures.

Remarkably, for an album that is often perceived as difficult, Selected Ambient Works Volume II is quite accessible. Featured in films, commercials and video games, the music continues to offer an entry point for listeners new to the ambient genre while remaining a classic touted by connoisseurs.

Quality Street: A Seasonal Selection For The Whole Family

When Nick Lowe was approached by his record label about making a Christmas album, his reaction wasn't exactly one of comfort and joy. "It was more disquiet and alarm, accompanied by feelings of 'do they really think I would wish to sully my good name on this tawdry and vulgar commercialism?'" Lowe says with a laugh. "but that feeling lasted about thirty-six and a half seconds, before I came to and thought, 'Vulgar, tawdry commercialism? Yes, please, when do we start?' seriously, I thought, 'Wait a minute, this could be really good fun.'"

The Man Who Fell To Earth OST

Soundtrack to David Bowie's The Man Who Fell to Earth will finally be released. "Due to the recent discovery of lost master tapes," the score will be available 40 years after the film hit theaters.

40 years ago, David Bowie starred in the sci-fi cult classic The Man Who Fell to Earth, which birthed one of his greatest personas: The Thin White Duke. In commemoration of its upcoming anniversary, the film will return to theaters. The film's soundtrack will be released commercially for the very first time.

Bowie originally intended to handle the soundtrack himself, but director Nic Roeg ultimately decided to go in a different direction. Instead, the music was coordinated by The Mamas & the Papas' John Phillips, with contributions from Japanese percussionist-composer Stomu Yamash'ta and former Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor. Several of the songs Bowie wrote for The Man Who Fell to Earth - including "Subterraneans" - ended up on his 1977 album, Low.

I Keep It To Myself - The Best Of Wilko Johnson

I Keep It To Myself - The Best Of Wilko Johnson draws together 25 tracks recorded between 2008 and 2012 by the legendary guitarist and songwriter with backing largely provided by Blockheads Norman Watt-Roy (bass) and Dylan Howe (drums), the same rhythm section that performed on Wilko's enormously successful Going Back Home album with Roger Daltrey.

Including re-workings of Wilko penned Dr Feelgood favorites 'She Does It Right', 'Twenty Yards Behind', 'Sneaking Suspicion' and 'Roxette', alongside further dynamic numbers such as 'Turned 21', 'Some Kind Of Hero', 'Out In The Traffic', 'Barbed Wire Blues', 'Down By The Waterside' and 'I Really Love Your Rock 'n' Roll' I Keep It To Myself - The Best Of Wilko Johnson is a splendid collection of high-octane rhythm & blues with that unmistakable Wilko Johnson Fender greatness stamped all over it. Have You Seen My Prefrontal Cortex?

One of the most enthralling, captivating releases of 2010, HYSMPC? is one of those albums that you can listen to dozens of times without ever settling on
a favorite song, because they're all your favorite. It's one of those albums where you want to show it to the whole world, but you'll only show it to a select
few friends because it's that good. You won't just recommend this to any old acquaintance. This album is basically equivalent to how I want my marriage
to be. After my honeymoon phase with Have You Seen My Prefrontal Cortex?, I continue to love it dearly and take it to bed with me every night.

    High Life

Written and recorded across a series of recording sessions in April of 2014 (some of which were open to selected media from around the world), none of the music on High Life existed before Someday World was completed! The resulting record, at 6 tracks and 45 minutes, is the clearest expression yet of the 'Reichkuti' (Steve Reich meets Fela Kuti) direction that first brought the Eno Hyde collaboration into being. And as the polyrhythms and melodies build, swirl and syncopate, the album feels truly alive with the energy of this time in the studio. High Life reunites Eno and Hyde with the 20 year old producer/multi-instrumentalist Fred Gibson, previous Eno-collaborator Leo Abrahams on guitar, drummer Chris Vatalaro, and keyboardist Don E. Taken alongside Someday World, it provides a fascinating insight in to how consistent influences can lead to very different but connected music, and continues to tell the story of two iconic musicians collaborating and exploring together. We look forward to seeing how fans select their own favorites across the two albums.

    The Siket Disc

The Siket Disc is a 1999 release from the American band Phish. It emerged from material developed during the Bearsville Studio sessions for Phish's 1998 album The Story of the Ghost. Not exactly outtakes or unfinished songs, The Siket Disc's compositions are actually select excerpts from the long-form improvisation of the Ghost Sessions. Phish keyboard player Page McConnell edited and mastered the selections into this compilation, named for engineer John Siket.

The material on The Siket Disc is defined by an almost ambient, post-rock sound that is a distinct departure from the band's major studio albums. The album is almost completely instrumental, but contains a few instances of vocalization. Quadrophonic Toppling, for instance, includes a triggered sample of bass guitarist Mike Gordon repeating the song's title.

Only the compositions My Left Toe and What's the Use? have been notably incorporated into the band's live shows on a somewhat regular basis. (However, Quadrophonic Toppling and The Happy Whip and Dung Song have each made at least one live appearance).

Gordon has indicated that The Siket Disc became a fixture in the band's late night tour bus music rotation in the early 2000s (decade), saying that It fit the vibe perfectly ... It's one of the only instances I can remember when we regularly played our own music.

    Miles Ahead (Soundtrack)

The release of the movie MILES AHEAD, Don Cheadle's wildly entertaining and moving exploration of Miles Davis, will be accompanied by this new soundtrack featuring musical highlights from Miles' career and new recordings overseen by Grammy Award-winning jazz/hip-hop artist Robert Glasper.

This is a perfect primer on Davis' career for the new fan and a brilliant audio keepsake of the film for those who've studied his works inside and out. The album features 11 tracks from across Miles' catalogue from 1956 to 1981, select dialogue from the film featuring Cheadle in character, and five original compositions written, co-written, produced or performed exclusively for MILES AHEAD by Robert Glasper. These cues include "What's Wrong with That?" a jam that closes the movie imagining Cheadle as Miles playing in the present day with guest performers Glasper, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Gary Clark, Jr. and Esperanza Spalding; plus "Gone 2015," an end-credits song featuring guest verses from rapper Pharoahe Monch. Cheadle also pens new liner notes for the album discussing the selection and creation of the songs on the soundtrack.
