At Home With Screamin Jay Hawkins

    Original Mono Mix

Screamin' Jay Hawkins' most famous "I Put A Spell On You" was supposed to be a blues ballad. But when he and his musicians got drunk in the studio, they churned out one of the most gut-wrenching, utterly visceral songs in the history of Pop. He groaned, moaned, spluttered and spat his way through the recording, giving it a haunting feel and ensuring a ban on many radio stations. But it became a hit, which gave him license to record more of his slightly oddball operatic music, resulting in his first album At Home With Screamin' Jay Hawkins in 1958. Featuring dancefloor sure shots such as "Hong Kong", the stomper "Yellow Coat", "Take Me Back To My Boots And Saddle" and of course "I Put A Spell On You", it goes without saying that this record is a killer! The garage-psychedelia explosion of the 1960s produced such a massive wave of incredible music that, four decades later, were still unearthing amazing unsung gems from this remarkable period. Thats the case with Creation, the lone album by the Druids of Stonehenge, which stands as a prime embodiment of the timeless sound and spirit of vintage garage-psych.

The New York-based Druids of Stonehengefrontman Dave Budge, guitarists Carl Hauser and Bill Tracy, bassist Tom Workman and drummer Steve Tindallexemplified both the surly essence of teen garage-punk and the experimental spirit of psychedelia. The band formed in 1965 as a scrappy, R&B-influenced teen combo in the Rolling Stones/Pretty Things mold. (This period is documented on the earlier Sundazed vinyl EP The Druids of Stonehenge.) By 1968, the Druids had embraced psychedelia, relocated to the West Coast and signed with the UNI label.

The Druids of Stonehenge unveiled their retooled sound with Creation, which revealed the quintet to be one of the toughest, most imaginative outfits of its era, maintaining both a forceful, earthy edge and an ethereal air of mystery. Those qualities were manifested in Budges snarling, Jaggeresque vocals and the bands tense, punchy playing, which elevated such memorable originals as Six Feet Down, Earthless and Pale Dream, as well as their distinctive reworkings of Bob Dylans Its All Over Now, Baby Blue, Loves Signed D.C. and Screamin Jay Hawkins I Put a Spell on You.

Despite its obvious quality, Creation was largely lost in the shuffle in its initial release, and the Druids of Stonehenge broke up the following year. In the decades since, the band and the album have gained immensely in stature and prestige among garage-psych aficionados and 60s devotees, with original copies of Creation becoming sought-after collectibles. Now, this legendary cult item is back in circulation on high-definition vinyl, mastered from the original analog tapes and featuring complete original cover art.

    Beale Street Saturday Night

    Clear Vinyl

Memphis' Beale Street had been a hub of music and activity since the
1860s. As it was being plowed under for "urban renewal" in 1976, James
Luther Dickinson-who had played with The Stones, Ry Cooder and the
Flamin' Groovies (later with Bob Dylan and the Cramps among others), as
well as produced Big Star, Screamin' Jay Hawkins and Alex Chilton (also,
The Replacements, Green On Red, and Mudhoney )-decided to not only
celebrate the legacy of great Memphis music, but make it back into the
place where both the blues and rock 'n' roll originated.

A camaraderie of Memphis musicians, photographers, artists, thespians
and "appropriate weirdos" gathered under Dickinson's direction to record
the heart of Beale Street-past and present. From Furry Lewis and Sleepy
John Estes to Sid Selvidge and Dickinson's own Mud Boy & The Neutrons,
Beale Street Saturday Night is an unparalleled audio trip through Memphis
music history. Recorded in places varying from artists' homes, to Ardent
Studios, to The Orpheum Theatre, Beale Street Saturday Night was originally
created as a fundraiser for the Memphis Development Foundation.
This reissue will serve a similar purpose as a portion of the proceeds will
go to support the radio program Beale Street Caravan which focuses on
    Memphis music, new and old.

    Beale Street
Saturday Night features new liners from Jim Lancaster (who worked on
the original issue) and previously unseen photos. This first ever reissue
of Beale Street Saturday Night was done under the supervision and with
the blessing of the Dickinson family, and it finally makes widely available
this important music and historical Memphis document for new audiences
    to discover.

In 1977, Memphis was officially declared "Home of the Blues" by an act
    of Congress. So, welcome home.
