From out of the wreckage of the American Civil War, the great state of Nevada came into being on October 31st, 1864. Its creation immediately helped to secure the re-election of Abraham Lincoln, the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment and, ultimately, the future of the union. Today, that proud but painful history is enshrined in the two words emblazoned on the upper left-hand corner of the state flag: Battle Born.
That phrase has always resonated with Brandon Flowers. It's what The Killers named their studio in Las Vegas, and when the band reconvened last May to start work on the follow-up to 2008's Day & Age, it became first a song title, then a thematic touchstone, and eventually the name of the album itself. But not all battles are blood and thunder: after a yearlong hiatus that saw three of the four Killers launch solo careers, they quickly discovered that timing and circumstance can be daunting adversaries in their own right.
Safe to say, Battle Born's title was well-earned. "It's the hardest thing I've ever done, no question," says Brandon. "It's the longest we've ever taken to make a record, and the longest I've ever spent on the lyrics. We thought we had enough songs, but then we realized that we didn't, and so we had to pound away and grind it out until we were certain that we were ready."
A small-town drama of epic-scale proportions, "Runaways" is everything you could wish for from a Killers comeback single; an unmistakably American expression of romance and optimism that heralds their return with cyclonic, Who-esque guitars and a chorus big enough to be bellowed from one end of the Mojave to the other.
One of the album's oldest songs, the bare bones were written in 2009 on the Day & Age tour, but, says Brandon, "We never knew what to do with it. Day & Age was us trying to be more of a pop group, but Runaways was rootsy and American, and it threw me for a curve. I knew it was a powerful song. But when it came time to make the album, there was an understanding the four of us had that we were gonna do what we're good at. The Killers write a specific kind of song, and we're not gonna shy away from it. So 'Runaways' became a kind of launching pad."
More songs followed: the title track, a musical 'brother' to its lead single; "Here With Me," the album's heartstring-tugging emotional gravity-centre; the stadia-quaking electro-rock of "Flesh & Bone." By the time the band had satisfactorily refined that body of songs, however, none of the producers on their shortlist could commit to making a whole album, necessitating a process whereby they recorded in fits and starts with a stellar roll-call of names that included Daniel Lanois, Steve Lillywhite, Damian Taylor, Stuart Price and Brendan O'Brien.
And therein lies Battle Born's real triumph. Recorded almost entirely at the studio that shares its name, it incorporates elements from each of the records that came before it; Hot Fuss' storytelling eye for detail; the yearning, mythic Americana of Sam's Town; the gratuitous hooks and pop nous of Day & Age; without sounding overtly like any one in particular. It's the sound of a band recognizing, and celebrating, their own identity. To borrow Brandon's maxim, Battle Born is The Killers "Doing what we do best."1. Flesh And Bone

Elvis At StaxRiding high on the success of Aloha From Hawaii, Elvis did something remarkable. He decided that his next recording project would be on his home turf - Memphis, TN. The most desirable studio in town was the red-hot STAX - the launching pad of such greats as Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave and Isaac Hayes. Elvis assembled the very best musicians in town - members of Booker T. and The MGs, The Memphis Boys and his own TCB band to create the ultimate band and he searched for fresh new material that would reect his new path. Such songs as "I Got A Feelin' In My Body" and "Loving Arms" demonstrate an artist looking to broaden his palette and his reach.
The Stax material has never been positioned as a whole body of work - but is an amazing chapter of Elvis' career. With the Elvis At Stax release, all of this material is collected for the rst time. Along with some of the funky outtakes, it creates a fresh new package that, while it doesn't have the known hits, tells a great story.LP1

The Magnificent Seven is a remake of the 1960s western film, which in turn was a remake of the 1954 Japanese classic film, Seven Samurai.
As the town Rose Krick is put under the siege of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue, the residents enlist the help of seven outlaws. Headed by bounty hunter Sam Chisolm they ought to protect them while they prepare for the anticipated violent confrontation. However, upon meeting the town's residents, the Seven find themselves fighting for much more than money.
The film stars Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Onofrio, Lee Byung-hun, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Martin Sensmeier, Peter Sarsgaard and Haley Bennett.
Multiple Award Winning composer James Horner was asked to write the film's score but died on June 22, 2015. Nearly a month after his death movie director Antoine Fuqua learned that James Horner had already started working on music for the film before filming commenced. Horner's friend and score producer Simon Franglen co-composed the score after Horner's death. This score will be the final James Horner score to be released posthumously.LP 1

Carried To DustThere's always been intrigue and adventure at the heart of Calexico. Ever since they were a largely instrumental duo, Joey Burns and John Convertino have constantly imbued their music with an unparalleled sense of drama, calling upon the myths and iconography of the American West and its Spanish speaking neighbor Mexico. Equal parts Sergio Leone, Larry McMurty, Carlos Fuentes and Cormac McCarthy. Naming themselves after a town near the California/Mexico border in honor of this cultural melange, they've spent the eighteen years since they met in Los Angeles mapping out their musical territory.
For Carried To Dust, Calexico called on a rotating cast of musicians and friends to help them create what is arguably their most varied and strongest output to date. The band lineup that solidified around Feast of Wire (Burns, Convertino, Martin Wenk, Jacob Valenzuela, Paul Niehaus, Volker Zander) is back again, along with a number of guests including Sam Beam, Douglas McCombs and Pieta Brown.
The new record is a shining example of Calexico's commitment to constantly redefining exactly who they are. A continued examination of their sources of inspiration, Carried To Dust is the next step in Calexico's ongoing quest of moving forward while never turning its back on the past. A remarkably well-rounded album, Carried To Dust underscores the band's restraint and beauty while showcasing every aspect of the bands' exceptional talents.1. Victor Jara's Hands

South Of NowhereSpanish Gold, which features drummer Patrick Hallahan (My Morning Jacket), guitarist Adrian Quesada (formerly of Grupo Fantasma) and guitarist and lead vocalist Dante Schwebel (City and Colour, formerly of Hacienda), release their debut album South of Nowhere on BMG/Del Mar Records.
Produced by the trio along with Collin Dupuis (JEFF the Brotherhood, Bombino), South of Nowhere was recorded by Dupuis at Dan Auerbach's Easy Eye Studio in Nashville and at Lalaland in Louisville. Additional recording was done with Jim Eno (Spoon, Poliça) at Public Hi-Fi in Austin and Sam Patlove (The Octopus Project) at Big Orange in Austin.
Of making the new album, Schwebel comments, "We kept finding that we had a lot of the same reference points during the recording. It became evident that we were still children of the MTV era.
We grew up with MTV when it was still a music channel. The way that the programming crossed genres from R&B to hip hop, rock, soul and pop music is how we approach records. It's an album of all those styles. Like watching a random hour of MTV programming circa 1986-1996. It's a nod to Michael Jackson, Dr. Dre, Madonna, the Beastie Boys or Tom Petty, all with a Texas border town setting. It all adds up to a fun listen that you can keep on repeat."1. One Track Mind

Pinetop PerkinsPerkins began his blues existence primarily as a guitarist, but a mid-40's encounter with an outraged knife-toting chorus girl at a nightspot left him with severed tendons in his left arm. That dashed his guitar aspirations, but Joe Willie Perkins came back strong from the injury, concentrating solely on piano. He traveled to Helena with Robert Nighthawk in 1943, playing with the elegant slide guitarist on his radio program. Perkins soon switched over to rival Sonny Boy Williamson's beloved King Biscuit Time radio show and remained for an extended period.
Perkins accompanied Nighthawk on a 1950 session for the Chess brothers that produced Jackson Town Gal, but Chicago couldn't hold him at the time. He hit the road, pausing at Sam Phillips's studios in Memphis long enough for Perkins to wax his first version of Pinetop's Boogie Woogie in 1953, then headed back to the windy city in 1969 when Otis Spann split from Muddy Waters. That is when the stage was set for Pinetop Perkins's reemergence. It was only then that his rolling mastery of the ivories began to assume outsized proportions.
After joining Muddy Waters, Pinetop made up for precious lost time in the studio. Discs for Antone's, Omega (Portrait of a Delta Bluesman, a solo outing that includes fascinating interview segments), Deluge, Earwig, and several other firms ensure that his boogie legacy won't be forgotten in decades to come.
Pinetop at a young 87 years old admits he wasn't the originator of the seminal piano piece Pinetop's Boogie Woogie, but it's a safe bet that more people associate it nowadays with Pinetop than with the man who devised it in the first place, Clarence Pinetop Smith. Appia Kwa Bridge"I wanted to go back to a highlife feeling with this album," explains Ebo Taylor. "The songs are very personal and it is an important part of my music to keep alive many traditional Fante songs, war chants and children's rhymes."
Appia Kwa Bridge is a strident return from the Ghanaian highlife guitar legend. Featuring six new compositions, his sound is more dense and tightly locked than ever with Berlin-based musicians Afrobeat Academy, a rock solid unit since regular touring worldwide following his Love And Death album in 2010, including a string of dates for Womad. Jochen Stroh works his analogue magic once more from his base at Berlin's Lovelite Studios.
The album covers a variety of themes dear to Taylor. The title track references a small bridge in Ebo's hometown of Saltpond on the Cape Coast: "it is a tiny bridge but a place known in the town where people meet, where lovers get together." The firing, rousing Ayesama, first demoed during the Love And Death sessions, is a Fante war cry, a taunt, "what's your mother's name?"; Nsu Na Kwan, based on a Fante proverb, asks "Which is older, the river or the old road" with the sub-text to respect your elders; and the brilliant Abonsam carries the message that Abonsam (The Devil) is responsible for evil in the world and that we should follow the Christian message.
Elsewhere, the album features a new version of highlife anthem, Yaa Amponsah, first recorded during the '20s by Sam's Trio before becoming a popular standard in Ghana, and a cover of an original track from Taylor's time with Apagya Show Band during the '70s, Serwa Brakatu, re-titled here as Kruman Dey. The closer, the acoustic Barrima, is a poignant tribute to Taylor's first wife and one true love who sadly passed away during the Summer of 2011. "Ebo wrote the song following her passing and recorded this in one take during our last day in the studio," reflects bandleader Ben Abarbanel-Wolff. "He was very emotional."
