Those Who Are About to Die Salute You

Those Who Are About to Die Salute You is the debut album by progressive Jazz rockers Colosseum, released in 1969. It is one of the pioneering albums of jazz fusion. The title is a translation of the Latin phrase 'morituri te salutant' that according to popular belief gladiators addressed to the emperor before the beginning of a gladiatorial match.

This is a powerful album, unleashing each member's instrumental prowess while consolidating each talent to form an explosive outpouring of progressive Jazz/Rock. Nothing but praise for the variety and uniqueness of each song, the playing of the musicians, and the group's ability to create a blend of Jazz, Rock, and Classical elements that was unconventional yet accessible.

The album reached number 15 in the UK Albums Chart.

    Salutations

Conor Oberst will release a new album, Salutations, on Nonesuch Records.

The album is a companion piece to 2016's lauded Ruminations. When Oberst wrote and recorded the songs on Ruminations, entirely solo-with just voice, piano, guitar and harmonica-he intended to ultimately record them with a full band. In the midst of putting together that band-upstate New York's The Felice Brothers plus the legendary drummer Jim Keltner (Neil Young, Jackson Browne, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, and many more)-the passionate responses Oberst was getting to those first solo recordings, from friends and colleagues, encouraged him to release the songs as-is, in their original sparse form, as his seventh solo album: Ruminations, which was released in October 2016. The Sunday Times of London called it the rawest album yet from the forever troubled one-time voice of a generation and political and very, very personal, saying Oberst is one of the best songwriters around.

Meanwhile, Oberst simultaneously moved ahead with his plans to record with the band, heading to the famed Shangri-la Studios in Malibu to record Salutations-co-produced with Keltner and engineered by long-time musical compadre Andy LeMaster. Guest contributions come courtesy of Jim James, Blake Mills, Maria Taylor, M Ward, Gillian Welch, Gus Seyffert, Pearl Charles, Nathaniel Walcott, and Jonathan Wilson.

Salutations includes full-band versions of the ten songs from Ruminations, plus seven additional songs, some from an additional session at Five Star Studios in Echo Park in fall 2016.

Oberst says of the Salutations sessions: Jim was really the captain of the ship and the spiritual leader of the project. We leaned heavy on his fifty-plus years of musical insight to get us to where we needed to be. He brought such depth and dignity to the proceedings that made everyone else involved rise to the occasion. It was a true stroke of luck that he got involved when he did.

    Greetings and Salutations

Twelve New tracks recorded at The Moathouse in Gainesville and produced by Less Than Jake's own Roger Lima, includes both (extremely!) limited edition EP's Season's Greetings and Greetings From Less Than Jake plus two unreleased songs.

The dozen tracks are pure unfiltered Less Than Jake, sunny ska mixed with barn-burner punk rock, more intended to get long-time fans and first-time listeners warmed up and moshing in their living rooms and singing along to every lyric.

Keeping its signature mix of punk roots and horn-driven melodies, songs like A Return To Headphones and Finer Points Of Forgiveness take the best of old-school Less Than Jake and put on a fresh coat of paint for an amped-up listening experience.

    Bang Zoom Crazy... Hello

Cheap Trick is part of the very fiber of American music, inspiring and delighting generations with their unique union of massive melodies and razorblade riffs, their own special brand of mischievous wit and maximum rock 'n' roll. Frontlined since 1974 by Robin Zander (vocals, rhythm guitar), Rick Nielsen (lead guitar), and Tom Petersson (bass guitar), the Rockford, IL-born band is set to impact still another era with the spectacular new BANG ZOOM CRAZY HELLO, their 17th studio collection and first in more than five years.

Co-produced by Cheap Trick and GRAMMY® Award winner Julian Raymond (Glen Campbell, Fastball), songs like "Heart On The Line" and the turbulent first single, "When I Wake Up Tomorrow," are deeply connected to the band's own irrepressible history just as they accelerate their trademark sound and vision into the now. The glorious "Long Time No See Ya" marks another in a long line of salutations spanning "ELO Kiddies" and "Hello There" to "Goodnight" and "Say Goodbye," while the piledriving "Do You Believe Me" showcases dueling solos from Nielsen and six-string icon Wayne Kramer - a milestone meeting of the long established Midwestern mutual appreciation society between Cheap Trick and the mighty MC5. BANG ZOOM CRAZY HELLO prove Cheap Trick to be as energetic and idiosyncratically irresistible as ever before, a callback to their classic canon yet somehow as inventive and exciting as a bunch of crazy kids just coming out of the garage.

    Back To Higher Ground

The Briggs play brash American cockney punk anthems that come complete with union-made sing-alongs and ear-splitting riffs. They are the kind of songs that would make Joe Strummer shed a tear of pride and Shame McGowamn raise a glass to salute brothers Joe and Jason LaRocca's rollicking sense of spunk and bravado. In their own inimitably slick and sneering ways, the Los Angeles four-piece demonstrates the spirit of punk is alive and well and thriving on the West Coast. With their third full-length, Back to Higher Ground, now on vinyl for the first time, the Briggs bring angularity to their gut-punching assault.

    Louie Louie Louie

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is pleased to announce the release of Louie, Louie, Louie, the band's eleventh studio album and a salute to the music of Louis Armstrong, Louis Jordan and Louis Prima.

Louie, Louie, Louie reveals the evolution of swing, jazz and popular music through the songs and personalities of these three giants of American culture. With a blend of greatest hits and essential works, the listener is transported from the earliest days of New Orleans jazz and ragtime to the birth of R&B and rock and roll. These remarkable artists revolutionized American music and popular culture and set new standards for what great entertainment and artistic expression could be. Their influence on Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is profound and if you enjoy the band, they are among the chief reasons why.

    Outside Society

Liner notes written by Patti Smith

For the length of time that Patti Smith has spent as a recording artist, she has a remarkably small catalogue: only ten albums recorded in over three decades.

Yet small as it may be, she still stands as one of the most influential artists of her time.
Despite the fact that she wears the moniker 'Godmother Of Punk' her oeuvre encompasses many styles and is impossible to fence into one genre.
But perhaps we should interpret this badge of honour as a salute to her attitude rather than as a reference to her musical style.

Outside Society, which will be released on vinyl at the same time as a general CD release, is a good presentation of her work as it chronologically explores the entirety of her career, from her first album Horses (MOVLP018) from 1975 to her last; Twelve from 2007, including hits such as 'Gloria', 'Because The Night', 'Dancing Barefoot' and her own intimate rendition of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'.
It also gives you a good introduction to the artist as a person, as the liner notes are brief recollections of the recordings written by Smith herself.

    If You Leave...

For the sessions, McEvoy recruited the talents of Grammy award-winning songwriter Jimmy Smyth on guitar, keyboard player James Delaney (Chuck Berry, Clannad), bassists Paul Moore (Van Morrison) & Eoghan O'Neill (Chris Rea, Moving Hearts) and drummer Des Lacey (Katie Melua), with special guests Brian Connor on piano and David Agnew on oboe. McEvoy is also joined by guest vocalist Mary Coughlan, Gemma Hayes and Hermione Hennessy with Sharon Shannon on the accordion for the song 'Secret of Living'.

The song was written especially by McEvoy for a run of nine
sell-out shows at The Olympia in Dublin to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the album 'A Woman's Heart', the third biggest-selling album in Irish chart history which helped to establish McEvoy as a star in her home country. McEvoy said, "I thought I should write a song for all the performers who were going to be featured in the show, something like The
Outlaws or The Traveling Wilburys, where everyone gets a chance to sing."

Among the twelve songs on 'If You Leave ' there are four cover versions, including The Beach Boys' 'God Only Knows', 'Lift The Wings' from the theatre show Riverdance, the Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly penned song 'True Colors' and Elmore James' 'Dust My Broom'. The latter serves as the album's encore and is McEvoy's salute to Brian Jones, who is believed to have taught his contemporaries the blues standard's slide guitar part.

Calle 13 have come a long way since their 2005 debut, when they were a smartass pair of twentysomethings from Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, riding the international reggaeton boom with a club-minded mix of sex talk and political invective. With their fifth record, frontman Residente and his halfbrother Visitante have made as ambitious a hip-hop album - if that's not too narrow a term - as any in any language. Beginning with an incantatory intro delivered by Uruguayan author Eduardo Galeano, the album ramps up through Respira El Momento, where Residente breathlessly escalates his Eminem-ish flow over dark piano, orchestral swells and choral drama. El Aguante pays tribute to human endurance, calling out a laundry list of dubious leaders (among them Hitler, Idi Amin, Stalin/Bush, Truman, Ariel Sharon) over a pennywhistle stomp owing to both Gogol Bordello and the Pogues. And on the title track, driven forward by Middle Eastern vocals and guest Tom Morello's strafing guitar, controversial WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange - who recorded his spoken-word part in the basement of the Ecuadorian embassy in London - salutes the power of people armed with the truth. The song, like the entire LP, is an object lesson in just that.

    Clean Your Clock

Colored 180 Gram Double Vinyl with Pop-Up Art

Motörhead, Kings of the Road for over förty years, are immortalized one more
time in Clean Your Clock, the superb live album recorded at The Zenith in
Munich, Germany during the Winter 2015 Bad Magic tour.

The indomitable cocktail of power, purpose and head-crunching volume that Lemmy Kilmister,
Phil Campbell and Mikkey Dee always succeeded in producing is captured
superbly by long-time producer Cameron Webb's mix, giving this landmark
Motörhead release the warmth, curve and punch which helped the band
achieve international acclaim during a career which saw the Grammy-winning
icons sell over 15 million albums and play to millions worldwide.

Clean Your Clock is also a fitting salute to the power of Ian 'Lemmy' Kilmister,
who founded Motörhead back in 1975 and so sadly passed away on Dec 28th
2015. Recorded only weeks before, Lemmy snarls, roars and bangs that bass
with the magisterial air of a man who knows he's a leader.

The Best Of The Guess Who

The Guess Who are one of the few legendary classic rock bands that have stood the test of time for many decades. Their music penned mostly by founders Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings are compositions that are played all over the world, every hour, every day, thanks to the undying love and support of their signature tunes like American Woman, Laughing, No Time, Hand Me Down World, These Eyes, etc.

After a string of non-stop hit singles and chart topping albums, RCA Records saluted this great band with their very first 'Greatest Hits' album called The Best Of The Guess Who. This amazing collection grabbed all the hit singles and solid album tracks from their first four albums, and rose to the upper rungs of the pop album charts for weeks throughout 1970 and 1971.

Side One features the classic line-up of Burton Cummings, Randy Bachman, Jim Kale and Gary Peterson, with tunes from their key albums American Woman, Canned Wheat and Wheatfield Soul. Side Two included the Mark II band with Burton Cummings, Jim Kale, Gary Peterson with the addition of the late great Kurt Winter and Greg Leskiw, featuring songs from the groundbreaking Share The Land album.

    Walt Wolfman

About a year ago, Richard Swift horrifically fractured his left ring finger. For a moment his nimble guitar and piano work flashed before his eyes. Doctors were saying things like movement and feeling could eventually return, etc, etc. Certainly, not even a little blip on the sadness radar of humanity, but a massive bummer for a fellow who has carved out a niche as one of independent music's sought after session players and producers and especially in relation to the astounding Richard Swift solo output we all know and love.

So, it's with a great, collective sigh of relief that he's back to churning out new material like Whitman. It's chugging, chiming and triumphant, featuring Swift's always endearing falsetto and casual call-and-response lyricism. I've got my own Whitman...Farewell, farewell/I hope it did you good/To say the things/My father never could, Swift pines. The song is a cryptic salute to Walt Whitman, whose American lineage of primal, urgent art can be traced to include Kerouac and Dylan, Bo Diddley and Beefheart right on through to modern outsider-pop wunderkinds like Swift. And according to Swift, Whitman is a nice taste of what we can expect from his next longform recording.

The same can be said for the remainder of the Walt Wolfman EP. Conceived in the same spirit that gave us 2008's cult favorite Ground Trouble Jaw EP, these blown-out, basement R&B rippers are not for the faint of heart. They require movement and sweat, dancing with a cocktail glass in your grip until your shoes are soaked in booze. Highlight of the set, MG 333, is a raw and ghostly trance, a blast of kinetic energy and jazz cigarette smoke. Meanwhile, the neu-vintage jive of Drakula (Hey Man) and Zombie Boogie pack a timelessness that transcends their seasonal titles. And yeah, that's Swift himself on rapid-fire drums across the whole damn set. Shit, he might have been fine without that measly finger after all.

    Johnny Throttle

Formed by ex-Parkinsons frontman Afonso and including former members of Menace, The Shakin Nasties, the Jackoffs, the Chinese Lungs, the Stains and Urban Shocks, Johnny Throttle have been playing drunken, beer-soaked gigs since the tail end of 2008. They play snotty, moronic and straight-to-the-point gonzo-garage punk rock, banging out furious 20-minute sets of short and catchy songs that bring to mind something like Slaughter and the Dogs meets the Electric Eels. This is probably Londons best punk rock band, and definitely the snottiest.

Their debut release, Stukas Über Shoreditch, which came out on Wrench Records, was a two-fingered salute and a spit in the eye. After a second 45 on the legendary Crypt Records, its now time for their first full length offering which is a similarly abrasive kick to the head, a blistering, full-on, spiked slab of rampant frenzy, replete with 100mph serrating riffs, like a seriously wired Dead Boys having a party with The Stooges whilst the pub rock honk of Eddie & the Hot Rods unsuccessfully tries to calm things down.

Like the best bands of the '70s punk era, Johnny Throttle are hugely influenced by the '60s garage bands, and were regulars in the audience, and on the stage, at the old Dirty Water Club during the last decade. But the main thing to them is that the music has to be sharp as a dagger, threatening but also beautiful. The 12 tracks on their self-titled debut are inspired mini-operas, played with the kind of near incompetent teenage enthusiasm which only borderline middle-aged, lowlifes, has-beens and never-weres can truly muster.

American IV: The Man Comes Around

On first thought, the idea of the Man in Black recording such covers as Bridge over Troubled Water, Danny Boy, and The First Time Ever I Saw Your
Face might seem odd, even for an artist who's been able to put his personal stamp on just about everything. But American IV: The Man Comes Around,
which also draws on Cash's original songs as well as those by Nine Inch Nails (Hurt), Sting (I Hung My Head), and Depeche Mode (Personal Jesus),
may be one of the most autobiographical albums of the 70-year-old singer-songwriter's career. Nearly every tune seems chosen to afford the ailing giant
of popular music a chance to reflect on his life, and look ahead to what's around the corner. From the opening track--Cash's own The Man Comes
Around, filled with frightening images of Armageddon--the album, produced by Rick Rubin, advances a quiet power and pathos, built around spare
arrangements and unflinching honesty in performance and subject. In 15 songs, Cash moves through dark, haunted meditations on death and
destruction, poignant farewells, testaments to everlasting love, and hopeful salutes to redemption. He sounds as if he means every word, his baritonebass,
frequently frayed and ravaged, taking on a weary beauty. By the time he gets to the Beatles' In My Life, you'll very nearly cry. Go ahead. He
sounds as if he's about to, too. Unforgettable. --Alanna Nash

This is the fourth in a series of collaborations between the original Man in Black, Johnny Cash, and producer Rick Rubin. The Man Comes Around
features new Cash compositions as well as a diverse array of cover songs, including Nine Inch Nails Hurt, Hank Williams I'm So Lonesome I Could
Cry, and Paul Simon's Bridge Over Troubled Waters. He duets with Don Henley on Desperado.

    The Bright Mississippi

Through his work as producer, composer, arranger and consummate session man, New Orleans native Allen Toussaint has truly earned living-legend status. He has collaborated on landmark recordings for such artists as Ernie K. Doe, Lee Dorsey, Dr. John, the Meters, the Pointer Sisters and Labelle and released acclaimed albums of his own. The 70 year-old pianist, already a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, was the recipient, on the recent Grammy Awards telecast, of the Recording Academy's prestigious Trustee Award, honoring a lifetime in the studio, both behind the scenes and in front of the mic.

On The Bright Mississippi, his Nonesuch debut, Toussaint continues to break new ground with his first jazz-oriented set, displaying the same effortless swing and relaxed charm he brought to his classic rock and roll sides. He salutes Big Easy stars of a previous generation, the jazz greats who, in the early 20th century, built the genre from the ground up and turned the ears of the world to New Orleans. Backed by an all-star combo that sounds like a group of old friends, Toussaint reinterprets classic jazz and blues tunes popularized or written by such New Orleans greats as Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Jelly Roll Morton and Joe King Oliver, as well as pieces composed by fellow travelers Django Reinhardt, Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk. He accedes the producers chair to trusted friend Joe Henry, who sat behind the board for Toussaint's contributions to Our New Orleans, Nonesuch Records best-selling 2005 benefit release aiding hurricane victims on the Gulf Coast. Henry also produced The River In Reverse, Toussaint's 2006 post-Katrina collaboration with Elvis Costello.

Henry assembled a decidedly non-traditional band of backing players for The Bright Mississippi, assuring a fresh take on such venerable tunes as West End Blues, St. James Infirmary, and Dear Old Southland. Joining Toussaint for four days of sessions at Manhattans Avatar Studio were guitarist Marc Ribot (Costello, Tom Waits), bassist David Piltch (k.d. lang), clarinetist Don Byron, trumpeter Nicholas Payton and drummer Jay Bellerose (Robert Plant /Alison Krauss, Sam Phillips). Nonesuch label-mates Brad Mehldau (piano) and Joshua Redman (saxophone) stopped by for one tune each.It was wonderful, says Toussaint of these convivial sessions.

Everything is live, of course. This isn't the kind of assembly line music where somebody put the wheels on here and somebody put the top on there. Everything got done at the same time, so everybody fed on each other, their personality and tonality.

    The Gasoline Age

    First Time Available On Vinyl

Includes 9 Previously Unreleased Bonus Tracks From Various Years

Merge celebrates our long relationship with East River Pipe by releasing their critically
acclaimed fourth album The Gasoline Age on vinyl.

Saluted by ROLLING STONE as "the most gifted of the new loners," F.M. Cornog,
aka East River Pipe, originally released The Gasoline Age in 1999. Named Album of
the Year by both THE NEW YORK TIMES and England's THE INDEPENDENT,
The Gasoline Age was inspired in large part by nighttime drives on New Jersey's seedy
Route 22. Automobile imagery appears throughout the album: cybercars, stolen cars,
pimpmobiles. The cars all seem to carry with them a romanticism that emphasizes
even further Cornog's gift of creating a lyrical mood without tying his flights of fancy
    down to specifics.

The Gasoline Age explores the suburban landscape and turnpike stretches outside
Cornog's door and calmly runs down bleak facts over the gentle pulse and chorused
strums Cornog has been perfecting since his early singles. Some of the songs are built
on merely six concise lines of clear-eyed warning, though sometimes ("Hell Is an
Open Door") he sounds like he might actually be looking forward to the
darkness on the horizon. On other tracks, like the ironically titled "Party Drive," it
sounds as though Cornog is barely going to make it to the curb. But for the character
in the song, going on that drive is the only thing that makes it seem like "we're gonna
    be OK."

The disconnect between the unsettling dead ends Cornog sings about and the peaceful
swells of the keyboards and the glimmering guitars is what brings emotional weight to
the entire album. One doesn't get the sense that a whole lot has changed in the last 15
years for the characters inhabiting this world.

Merge came to know East River Pipe through his string of memorable and
mysterious singles on Hell Gate and Sarah Records. Merge co-founder Mac
McCaughan writes, "We had friends who were early fans of those records, including
Jim Wilbur of Superchunk, and it seemed that no one took East River Pipe fandom
lightly-once you were in on the secret, you were all in. After Ajax Records compiled
the sparkling early sides, we started working with Fred and his wife and partner
Barbara Powers and have been looking forward to the next batch of periodic broadcasts from his bedroom studio ever since."

Another Day, Another Time: Celebrating the Music of Inside Llewyn Davis

A one-night-only concert was held at New York City's Town Hall last fall, to celebrate the music of the Coen brothers film Inside Llewyn Davis. The evening was filmed for a documentary that was broadcast by Showtime last winter, and now Nonesuch Records releases a live recording of the concert, Another Day, Another Time: Celebrating the Music of "Inside Llewyn Davis,"on January 13, 2015. The concert, documentary, and live album were produced by Inside Llewyn Davis writer/director/producers Joel and Ethan Coen and soundtrack producer T Bone Burnett. (Nonesuch also released the film's soundtrack.)

As Burnett explains, "Inside Llewyn Davis was filled with live performances of some of the folk songs that had survived the McCarthy hearings. Some of the songs were a hundred years old; some had just been written but sounded a hundred years old. In order to get attention for a film that was not exactly on the beat we decided to throw a concert featuring the actors and musicians who had performed in the movie and on the soundtrack. We also invited members of the extraordinary community of musicians who have coalesced around this old music-and have kept it alive in the wake of the most recent technological revolution-to join us that night. We asked them to perform an old song and one of their new songs.

He continues, "Several new stars emerged from their performances that evening-The Secret Sisters, Lake Street Dive, The Milk Carton Kids, Rhiannon Giddens, and Punch Brothers all proved themselves as good as the best as they took the stage next to Hall of Famers Joan Baez and Elvis Costello, and established younger artists like The Avett Brothers, Colin Meloy, Marcus Mumford, Conor Oberst, Willie Watson, Gillian Welch, and Jack White." In fact, T Bone Burnett has since produced albums by both Punch Brothers and Rhiannon Giddens, which will be released shortly after Another Day, Another Time.

Huffington Post called Another Day, Another Time "one of those only-in-New-York events," while Rolling Stone said it was "a bustling salute to the sounds and the idea of Sixties folk music," and continued, "For all the formality of the night, which was exceedingly well-paced and organized, the concert recalled a time when one or two people, bearing one or two unplugged instruments, could be as enthralling as the greatest rock or EDM track."
