The Best Of Sade (Awaiting Repress)

By the time this was released in 1994, something unexpected happened. Sade's early work became classic and the later additions boasted even better vocals and songs that nicely improved on the theme. The timeless sound and class always exhibited makes Sade Adu and her band a no-brainer for an appealing compilation.

Like Al Green's Greatest Hits, The Best of Sade doesn't detract from the original albums and is a marker of time, not the end of the act. The ice-princess demeanor and detached vocals worked perfectly for the mid-'80s singles and radio samples Smooth Operator and Your Love Is King. The tracks from the make-or-break second album, Promise, seem less dolorous propped up and sequenced for a compilation. The sensual-to-a-fault The Sweetest Taboo and Never As Good As the First Time both retain their strength here. This set also includes tracks from Sade's comeback CD, Love Deluxe, including Kiss of Life and No Ordinary Love.

As a bonus, The Best of Sade also includes a rare cover of Please Send Me Someone to Love from the Philadelphia soundtrack.

    Diamond Life (Awaiting Repress)

Elegance, class, and sophistication barely begins to describe the sound of Sade. Her 1984 debut album, Diamond Life, shimmers with glamour and style, a sleek, catchy hybrid of pop, soul and jazz. The album was driven by an irresistible sound, mood music that crosses over to dance with excellent musicianship and clever lyrics.

Diamond Life spawned her first Top 10 U.S. hit, the bossa nova-tinged, Smooth Operator, with its unforgettable sax work, a true classic. Other standouts are the swinging horn-peppered Your Love Is King, the retro-funk of When Am I Going To Make A Living, the tender and lovely I Will Be Your Friend, as well as an imaginative remake of Timmy Thomas' 1971 hit Why Can't We Live Together (with an extremely long, brilliant jazzy intro heavy with congas).

Diamond Life had international sales of over six million, becoming one of the top-selling debut recordings of the '80s and the best selling debut ever by a British female vocalist. There has never been a lead singer quite like former model Sade Adu, her cool vocals and exotic looks grabbed everyone's attention. Her ponytails, large hoop earrings and backless dresses, and the fantastic blue-tinged black and white cover art offered up a retro look to match the sound. Everything shimmers here with a sultry yet subtle beauty, pulling you into an atmosphere of a midnight lounge or the club scene from which Sade first emerged. Diamond Life is the album that started it all!

'Lovers Rock' is the 5th studio album by the English singer Sade (born Helen Folasade Adu), released on 14 November 2000 by Epic Records. The album reached number eighteen on the UK Albums Chart and number 3 on the U.S. Billboard 200. it has since been certified triple platinum by the RIAA. 'Lovers Rock' earned Sade the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album. She is the most successful solo female artist in the UK, having sold over 50 million albums.

From the early 80's on Sade and her band produced a string of hit albums, from debut album Diamond Life in 1984 up to Lovers Rock in 2000 (a new album is released in February 2010). Changing a winning team never was a good plan and Sade, accompanied by longtime associates Stuart Matthewman, Andrew Hale and Paul Denman, managed to deliver an elegant, smooth-yet-not-too-slick-sounding album. Pioneering the Nu Soul genre roughly 10 years before her US colleagues, Sade is definitely one of a kind!

Worthy of a 10th anniversary audiophile pressing, we gave 'Lovers Rock' the 180 grams vinyl treatment, for your aural pleasure!

    Sade is back!

2010's Soldier Of Love proved her to be the queen of British NuSoul, and now Music On Vinyl is re-releasing one of her other gems: Love Deluxe. The album, recorded in 1992, proves how far ahead she was of her American counterparts Angie Stone and Erykah Badu. Her calm, oh-so-cool and yet fragile vocals are reinforced by the minimal arrangements, so we are able to focus on her engaging lyrics filled with love, heartbreak and compassion.

Love Deluxe will be released on high standard 180 grams audiophile vinyl, and includes Grammy-winning 'No Ordinary Love' and hit-single 'Cherish The Day'.

    Soldier Of Love

Music On Vinyl has already released two classic Sade albums; 1992's Love Deluxe and Lovers Rock from 2000, so it only makes sense to release their latest album Soldier Of Love from 2010.

This album is again filled with minimal arrangements that encapsulate Sade Adu's fragile singing, and yet there is a strength that shines through her voice that we haven't seen from her for a while. The album is filled with love, hurt, and abandonment, but there is an anger and a defiance here that we haven't seen before. Sade's lyrics are, as ever, poetic, demand our attention, and are a lot darker than we're used to.

This was Sade's first album with original work in 10 years, and was much anticipated by press and public alike. Luckily for us, in the words of fellow Neo-Soul singer Maxwell: it's so monolithic it'll shake you in your shoes!

Herbie Hancock's 40th album was originally released in 1996 on CD only. Hancock reinvents tunes like Don Henley's New York Minute, Peter Gabriel's Mercy Street, Simon & Garfunkel's Scarbrorough Fair and more.

On first glance this record would not seem to have much promise from a jazz standpoint. Herbie Hancock performs a set of tunes which include numbers from the likes of Peter Gabriel, Stevie Wonder, Sade, Paul Simon, Prince, the Beatles (Norwegian Wood) and Kurt Cobain. However by adding vamps, re-harmonizing the chord structures, sometimes quickly discarding the melodies and utilizing an all-star band, Hancock was able to transform the potentially unrewarding music into creative jazz. Hancock, who sticks to acoustic piano, shows that he is still in prime form, taking quite a few fiery solos. With Michael Brecker on tenor and surprisingly effective soprano, guitarist John Scofield, bassist Dave Holland, drummer Jack DeJohnette and percussionist Don Alias (along with an occasional horn or string section that was dubbed in later), the results are often quite hard-swinging and certainly never predictable...

    Promise (Awaiting Repress)

    Mastered by Kevin Gray

The silky-smooth, smokey and sensuous voice of Sade Adu rings true and clear and the smoldering brand of jazz and Latin-tinged soul are featured on Promise, Sade's second album. Released just nine months after Diamond Life, the 1984 Grammy award-winning Best New Artist continues the cool-cat jazz of their debut while exploring more exotic influences. Sade is hard to define. She is not quite jazz, not quite R&B, not quite pop, and not quite ''easy listening.'' Sade the band really defies all attempts at categorization.

1985's Promise is a personal journey of a broken heart and a bruised soul. It bleeds with emotion, and it captivates the listener through its refined and understated grace. This album has a cohesiveness rather than just a collection of songs, there is a development of a theme here, and the songs of love and betrayal and just being a woman blend together into a whole. ''The Sweetest Taboo,'' easily one of the group's signature songs, went on to be a huge hit and ''Never as Good as the First Time'' landed in both the R&B and pop Top 20. ''Is It a Crime'' was also released as a single. The unreleased tracks are also standouts, Sade doesn't just sing with instrumental accompaniament, she dialogs with the instruments, conversing and gossiping with them about the melancholy inhabitants of her songs: ''Mister Wrong,'' ''Jezebel,''''Maureen'' (you-were-a-pearl-in-my-world).

Promise became the band's first album to top the album charts in both the United Kingdom and the United States while matching its predecessor's quadruple platinum certification. Sade was once again the personification of cool, her sultry contralto is more assured and expressive. Sade's voice and the band's music create a foreboding atmosphere that is practically spellbinding. This album is gorgeous. Sade is a timeless singer who makes her mark with refreshing refinement and beauty.

''...near-perfection, ''Promise'' will forever be Sade's career-defining masterwork.''

    Black Radio

The Robert Glasper Experiment's Blue Note Records/EMI release Black Radio is a future landmark recording that boldly stakes out new musical territory and transcends any notion of genre, drawing from jazz hip-hop, R&B and rock, but refusing to be pinned down by any one tag.

The first full-length album from the Grammy-nominated keyboardist's electric Experiment band (Casey Benjamin/sax & vocoderist, Derrick Hodge/bass and Chris Dave/drummer) also features many of Glasper's famous friends from the spectrum of urban music, seamlessly incorporating appearances from a jaw-dropping roll call of special guests including Erykah Badu, Bilal, Lupe Fiasco, Lalah Hathaway, Shafiq Husayn, KING, Ledisi, Chrisette Michele, Musiq Soulchild, Meshell Ndegeocello, Stokley Williams and Mos Def.

Throughout, the Experiment wears its eclecticism on its sleeve, presenting new collaborative originals and surprising cover songs. They transform the Afro-Cuban standard Afro Blue with Badu, Sade's Cherish The Day with Hathaway, David Bowie's Letter to Hermione with Bilal and Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit with Benjamin's vocoder vocal.

    Stronger Than Pride (Awaiting Repress)

Mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio

Limited Edition 180 Gram Virgin Vinyl

''...brilliant, exceptional, amazing and original - a warm and blissful pop-flavored modern jazz treasure.''

''A sublime, enduring classic...Sade's timeless masterpiece.''

Three years after leaving their fans begging for more, Sade created Stronger Than Pride, one of their best works ever. An international hit that lit-up the Pop, Jazz and R & B charts. The platinum selling album includes sensual Brazilian bossa nova inspired acoustic material as well as three Billboard charted singles - the #1 smash ''Paradise,'' ''Nothing Can Come Between Us'' and ''Turn My Back On You.''

On Stronger Than Pride, probably Sade's most stripped down and sparse album, the band creates the perfect groove for romance and fulfills the promise of their stunning debut by continuing a sense of sophistication and understated elegance, two hallmarks of the Sade sound. There's no visible strain in Sade's singing, and what she does within the boundaries of her range is exquisite.

''Stronger than Pride'' exudes a greater confidence than the first two records, the talented band no longer has anything to prove. Stuart Matthewman on guitar and sax, Paul Spencer Denman on bass and Andrew Hale on keyboards are strong musicians/composers with distinctive character, the perfect vehicle for Sade's mature, lush vocal lead.

Sade offers cool composure... a unique sound that infuses Soul, Pop, Contemporary Jazz and a little Middle-Eastern flavor. It's impossible to separate the allure of this sultry music from the persona of the woman singing it, for Sade truly is a femme fatale of mythic dimension.

Born in the bleak isolation of the secluded prairie city of Edmonton, Canada, Homeshake's Peter Sagar worked with friends in a number of local bands before picking up and moving to Montreal in 2011 to begin recording under the Homeshake moniker. Following two self-released cassettes (The Homeshake Tapes and Dynamic Meditation) and two acclaimed full-lengths (In The Shower and Midnight Snack), Sagar cracks a window open with his third album for Sinderlyn - Fresh Air.

Started immediately following the recording of Midnight Snack, Fresh Air continues Sagar's exploration of dreamy, downtempo bedroom R&B and draws inspiration from such disparate artists like Sade, The Band, Broadcast, Prince, and Angelo Badalamenti. As the title Fresh Air suggests, Sagar's songs were created to clear his listeners' minds of negativity. Full of smoky, laid back love songs and airy productions, Sagar's decidedly stoned sound is a breath of fresh air.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, Russ Manning joined Twin Shadow in early 2010. While on tour across Europe and Australia, Russ began to write songs in 2 star hotel rooms and mixing the songs in the van. By 2012 Russ had discovered a clear voice of New York in the evening; an alter ego exploration called Rush Midnight.

New York label Cascine released his debut EP +1 with production support from George Lewis Jr. With influences spanning from Minneapolis '80s funk group Change, to The Police and Sade, Rush Midnight currently writes songs in the shadows of his bedroom with the hope of one day writing in the light of the outdoors.

Rush Midnight has toured with Miami Horror, Gold Fields, Savoir Adore, and played a sold out show with St. Lucia in Jan 2014. Rush Midnight's debut full length self-titled album will be out in 2014 on Last Gang Records. The record was executively produced by Jesse F. Keeler (MSTRKRFT / Death From Above 1979).

    Don't Get Heavy

When asking experimental electronic yacht duo Fur Trade to pinpoint where their sound comes from, it becomes pretty clear that the list is never ending.

"We had the goal of making electronic music, but not with typical electronic sounds. There's synths, drums, bass and guitar, but also piano and saxophone and even a full string section," explains songwriter and producer Steve Bays, previously the frontman of synth punk band Hot Hot Heat. "We both have a background in heavy music, so we wanted to find a way to do yacht music with a heavy impact."

The Vancouver-based duo, which consists of Bays on synths and drums and 24-year-old songwriter and session musician Parker Bossley (Gay Nineties) on bass and guitar, combines both members on vocals, often singing together, to create a unique voice entirely their own. But the intricate sounds you hear on their album definitely don't come overnight.

"We usually write songs quickly. 'Kids These Days' (the first single released by Fur Trade) was done in one night. We can write a song in one session, but then we'll go back to the studio and take it down the 'rabbit hole'," explains Bays. The self-defined "rabbit hole" method, involves the two locking themselves in Bays' studio, Tugboat Place, for days, sometimes weeks at a time to get the 'sculpting' just right. "With electronic music, the mixing is just as important as the song writing. You can't take that for granted."

Bays and Bossley admit to being obsessed with the minute details of production that most people wouldn't notice. And it creates a delicate balance that is very apparent when listening to their songs. Big and hi fi, while still sounding dirty; continually distorted, but with a soft vibe. It's the two sides to Fur Trade's music that makes it so unexpected.

Bossley cites the loose and experimental psychedelic arrangements of 70's composer Piero Piccioni, as well as the thick funk lines of Rick James as his main influences on the album.

"The synthesized beats in Falco's Einzelhaft were also a huge part of it for me. I come from a background of studying composition of 70's composers and Steve and I both share a love for the soft pop from the 70's and 80's (Bowie, Sade, Hall and Oates)," explains Bossley, "but we add our own touch of modern grime and dirt in there."

The two share a sporadic and high energy creative connection that allows them to combine, shape and reform their influences, styles and musical ideas into a unified one. In the beginning, Bossley often went sleepless for days to work with Bays at night and work as a chef by day. Watching them holed up in the studio together gives the most insight into the unique energy that comes when they work together.

"We're definitely going a mile a minute. It can come pretty fast. We're continuously bouncing ideas, and suddenly, everything will merge. That's the best feeling," says Bossley.

For 'Voyager', one of many standout tracks on their upcoming album, Don't Get Heavy, on Last Gang Records, it all started with a beat.

"I was sitting at a friend's drum kit and started playing a beat. I liked it a lot, and wanted to remember it, so I recorded it on my iPhone. I put it on my computer and surprisingly enough, that recording is what you hear on the final product," says Bays.

Not to say that the rest of the track came quickly. Also added the the mix were drum samples, live and programmed, and eight passes of guitar, which Bays chopped up multiple times to get the notes and feel just right.

"We've written a lot of songs, we have a lot more than what's just on the album. But we'll try anything. Some of our best work has come out of the sessions where we just try any instrument until we get the right sound."

The title track of the album, 'Don't Get Heavy', came up after speaking with a friend who tends to always make things bigger than they are.

"I like to come up with album titles, and make them song titles. In this case, I wasn't planning on working on a song, but I was thinking of this friend. I just wanted to tell him, 'let's hang out, but don't get heavy'. I was so excited about the title, the lyrics pretty much wrote themselves."

And that's the process for pretty much all of the songs on Don't Get Heavy. An idea, a feeling, and a flow.
