Enter The Wu-Tang Clan (36 Chambers)

Ranked 386/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Along with Dr. Dre's The Chronic, the Wu-Tang Clan's debut, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), was one of the most influential rap albums of the '90s. Its spare yet atmospheric production -- courtesy of RZA -- mapped out the sonic blueprint that countless other hardcore rappers would follow for years to come. It laid the groundwork for the rebirth of New York hip-hop in the hardcore age, paving the way for everybody from Biggie and Jay-Z to Nas and Mobb Deep. Moreover, it introduced a colorful cast of hugely talented MCs, some of whom ranked among the best and most unique individual rappers of the decade. Some were outsized, theatrical personalities, others were cerebral storytellers and lyrical technicians, but each had his own distinctive style, which made for an album of tremendous variety and consistency. Every track on Enter the Wu-Tang is packed with fresh, inventive rhymes, which are filled with martial arts metaphors, pop culture references (everything from Voltron to Lucky Charms cereal commercials to Barbra Streisand's The Way We Were), bizarre threats of violence, and a truly twisted sense of humor. Their off-kilter menace is really brought to life, however, by the eerie, lo-fi production, which helped bring the raw sound of the underground into mainstream hip-hop. Starting with a foundation of hard, gritty beats and dialogue samples from kung fu movies, RZA kept things minimalistic, but added just enough minor-key piano, strings, or muted horns to create a background ambience that works like the soundtrack to a surreal nightmare. There was nothing like it in the hip-hop world at the time, and even after years of imitation, Enter the Wu-Tang still sounds fresh and original. Subsequent group and solo projects would refine and deepen this template, but collectively, the Wu have never been quite this tight again. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

    Doris

Doris is the debut studio album by Odd Future member Earl Sweatshirt. It follows his first mixtape Earl, which was released in 2010 when he was sixteen. After returning from a forced stay in a Samoan boarding school, he began working on his debut album and signed a deal with Columbia, rather than Odd Future's Odd Future Records.

Doris features guest appearances from Odd Future members Domo Genesis, Frank Ocean, Tyler, The Creator along with Casey Veggies, Vince Staples, RZA and Mac Miller. Production was primarily handled by Sweatshirt under the pseudonym randomblackdude and production duo Christian Rich. Additional production was provided by Matt Martians, The Neptunes, RZA, Samiyam, BadBadNotGood, Frank Ocean, and Tyler, The Creator. The album was supported by three singles; Chum, Whoa featuring Tyler, The Creator, and Hive featuring Vince Staples and Casey Veggies.

Return To The 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version

It's safe to say that hip-hop has never seen an album like Ol' Dirty Bastard's 1995 solo debut Return to the 36 Chambers. The brief glimpses of ODB's unhinged genius provided by Wu-Tang Clan's landmark Enter the Wu-Tang album two years earlier were begging to be expanded on to a larger canvas, and, with RZA guiding production, the album promised to give Dirty the creative license to make one of the most bizarre, entertaining and original LPs in hip-hop history. With his raspy, drunken flow and dark sense of humor, Dirty fearlessly attacks from all angles, throwing himself fearlessly into punchy rhyme attacks (Damage, with GZA), drugged-out party jams (the monster singles Brooklyn Zoo and Shimmy Shimmy Ya) and bizarre, grimly hilarious fantasies of sex and violence (Don't U Know and the R&B-tinged Sweet Sugar Pie). Backed by RZA's appropriately gritty, dissonant beats and appearances from the Clan, Return became an instant hit, selling over 1 million copies and earning a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rap Album in 1996. The album stands as a high water mark in the Wu-Tang Clan's collective creative output and was selected as one of the Best 100 Rap Albums by The Source magazine in 1998. In honoring the legacy of one of hip-hop's most innovative releases, Get On Down is proud to present this incredible and unique special edition of Ol' Dirty Bastard's Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version on double LP.

Immobilarity is the second studio album and the follow-up to Only Built 4 Cuban Linx by Wu-Tang Clan member Raekwon (a.k.a. The Chef). Raekwon has been cited as a pioneer of Mafioso rap and is the founder of his own label ICEH20 Records.

The producers Triflyn, The Infinite Arkatechz, and Six July Productions gave Immobilarity the same sounds which producer RZA gave to Raekwon's first album with ill beats and street lyrics.

Fellow rappers from the Wu-Tang Clan also appear on the album such as Method Man on Fuck Them, Power with the American Cream Team and The Table featuring Masta Killa. As a nice bonus attribute, there's even a solid Pete Rock produced track Sneakers with Raekwon's flowing rhymes.

Raekwon explained that the album title is an acronym for I Move More Officially by Implementing Loyalty and Respect in the Youth.

The album, which was originally released in 1999, reached to number 2 in the US Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and number 4 on the US Billboard album charts and was certified gold by the RIAA.

The Man With The Iron Fists

On the hunt for a fabled treasure of gold, a band of warriors, assassins, and a rogue British soldier descend upon a village in feudal China, where a humble blacksmith looks to defend himself and his fellow villagers. A movie inspired by '70s Kung Fu movies and godfathered by Quentin Tarantino, The Man With The Iron Fists is RZA's first step into directing as one of his many contributions to this film: the fabled producer of the Wu-Tang Clan is credited as writer, director, main actor and score producer of this violent outburst of humor and action. Co-starred by Lucy Liu and Russell Crowe, this movie is destined for greatness. For the soundtrack RZA worked together with genre defining artists like Black Keys, Wu-Tang Clan and Kanye West and takes things a step further than his legendary Ghost Dog soundtrack.

    Temples of Boom

With this album Cypress Hill turned towards a more tranquil, sedate, slower, spooky sound with beats. The dark mood of this album reflects the strife within the band during this era, when member Sen Dog temporarily left the band to pursue other projects.

On this album both Wu-Tang Clan members RZA and U-God make appearances on Killa Hill Niggas. Also notable was track No Rest For The Wicked which ignited the feud between Cypress Hill and rapper Ice Cube, who they claimed, stole material from the band. At the time this album was well received by critics worldwide.

Q - 4 Stars - Excellent - The production is sophisticated, incorporating Indian sitar and sloping, almost psychedelic bass grooves to create a vaguely threatening ambient hardcore.
Melody Maker - Bloody Essential - resonates with freakish cheese-wire paranoia a gobsmacking paradox of expansive claustrophobia. The funk patters like an erratic heartbeat, the voices are stretched to bursting with menace and loathing and mockery

Music On vinyl is proud to announce yet another Cypress Hill classic which has easily stood the test of time.

Ol' Dirty Bastard rose to fame in the world renowned Hip Hop gang Wu-Tang Clan. His vocal input in Wu-Tang's Enter The Wu-Tang added comic relief and unpredictability to the overt gangsta lyrics, so when producer RZA worked with him to capitalize on his unique style on his own solo album, ODB jumped (probably literally) at the chance.

Return To The 36 Chambers (1995) is chock full of his rants, growls, schtick and off-beat rhymes. After release, Shimmy Shimmy Ya and Brooklyn Zoo quickly became true Hip Hop classics. An entertainer in his own right, ODB was perhaps one of the realest rappers out there, and unfortunately died in his prime in 2004.

    The W

Numbered, Limited Edition On Crystal Clear Vinyl

The W is the third studio album by the world's baddest Hip Hop group Wu-Tang Clan. Released in 2000, the album debuted at number 5 on the Billboard 200, and instantly topped the R&B/Hip Hop Albums Chart after release. Containing the hit Gravel Pit, the album was certified Platinum a few months later.

After their 1997 album WU-TANG FOREVER and several solo projects, The W has a more rugged, less polished sound than most Wu-Tang related albums from that era. Group mastermind RZA produced The W with roughed up Soul samples and tight, tough beats. Paranoid kung fu samples and bizarre sounds drive the fantastic nightmare. The back-to-basics approach (the group's massive debut ENTER THE WU-TANG comes to mind) works so well because it puts the focus back on some of the best rappers in the game.

The album also features guest appearances from Isaac Hayes, Redman, Nas, Busta Rhymes and Snoop Dogg.

Jackson/Prince face-off, Alix is everything T&G like about music:
old and new, vinyl and youtube, vocal chord and microkorg,
gathered up and arranged with great care into a good-smelling,
subtly sexy, catchy-or-die mish-mosh of sensibilities and time-warp senselessness, lightly peppered with that signature Swiftian
element, but undeniably Generationals in taste. As Swift had
decreed: 'tis a good idea to tear down and rebuild, but it's not
always necessary to start from scratch.

416-Page Photography-And-Interview Coffee Table Book About The
World's Most Fascinating And Accomplished Vinyl Collectors

Created By Noted Photographer Eilon Paz

The Second Revised Edition Of The Book Profiles Over 130 Vinyl Collectors,
Featuring A Foreword By The RZA And Interviews With
Questlove, Gilles Peterson, Four-Tet, The Gaslamp Killer, And More.

This Edition Has 20 More Pages Than The First Edition

"Dust & Grooves began as a labor of love but has become a worldwide phenomenon. Paz has gained access to the personal troves of well-known collectors from all over the globe, showcasing each collector as well as his or her collections."- ABC News

Eilon Paz's 416-page coffee-table book illuminates over 130 vinyl connoisseurs and their collections in the most intimate of environments - their record rooms. With a foreword by the RZA, compelling photographic essays are paired with in-depth interviews to illustrate what motivates record collectors to keep digging.

Readers get an up close and personal look at a variety of well-known vinyl champions as well as a glimpse into the collections of world-renowned and lesser-known DJs, producers, record dealers, and everyday enthusiasts. The book is divided into two main parts: the first features 250 full-page photos framed by captions and select quotes, while the second consists of 12 full length interviews that delve deeper into collectors' personal histories and vinyl troves.

It all started out several years ago as nothing more than a way for photographer Paz to engage in a personal project in his free time. Adrift in Brooklyn after emigrating from Israel, Paz - a record collector on the side - thought it might be fun to start taking photos of people whose record collections were both larger and weirder than his own. These portraits turned into the Dust & Grooves website, which quickly developed a global following that grew every time a new portrait was added to the mix. People all over the world seemed to dig not only the beauty of Eilon's photos, but the interviews with the collectors-a motley, if generally charming, crew of non-violent obsessives who turned out to be at least as intriguing as the records they collected.

Unearthing the very soul of the vinyl community, his book will appeal to a broad spectrum of readers, from die-hard record enthusiasts to fans of pop culture, sharp photography, and music history.

Eilon Paz has shot for Israel's top cultural publications and is a regular contributor for the US based food/travel magazine, Saveur, and his work appeared in worldwide publications such as Wax Poetics, Monocle, Conde Nast Traveler, Delta Airlines' Sky magazine, and the French music magazine Vibrations.

Library Catalog Music Series: Music For Primordial Recollections

By day, InfinitRock is an 18 year old biology student at SUNY Purchase, by
night a fuzzed glitch and fump hip-hop producer. In second grade he was
digesting The RZA and Aphex Twin and has been making instrumentals since
the age of six. As a son to parents from India, he would also hear a lot
of classical indian music around the house and since he could not
understand hindi, voices became instruments rather than a lyrical tool.
His music reflects the conceptualization of sounds, and what makes music
music and the world musical. InfinitiRock draws inspiration from the
everyday, incorporating their sounds into his music. Music for Primordial
Recollection contains a motif of sounds and rhythms that trigger ancient
memories. Ambient layers and interludes featuring field recordings of wind
chimes, children playing, glass breaking, the chewing of raw pasta, the
crumpling of paper bags, and flowing water. The album is an auditory
documentation of the evolution of entropic sound, tamed by the laws of
    rhythm. Everything breathes.

    Kill Bill Vol. 1 Soundtrack

Fashion be damned: Pop culture is just one big Hometown Buffet for writer-director Quentin Tarantino. Nowhere has that sensibility been more apparent than on his hand-picked soundtrack choices, and this oft tongue-in-cheek tale of a female assassin's revenge (his first film in six years) is no exception. With dizzy, almost palpable glee, Tarantino evokes the international hall-of-mirrors influences that energize martial arts films and much of Asian pop culture in general. Thus the hip-hop of Wu Tang's RZA (who, along with composer Charles Bernstein, concocts what passes for the score's traditional cues) somehow finds itself but one ingredient in a heady souffle that includes vintage TV and film cue rarities (Al Hirt's main title from The Green Hornet, Bernard Herrmann's haunting theme from Twisted Nerve, the spaghetti western melodrama of Luis Bacalov's The Grand Duel, Isaac Hayes in full blaxploitation mode on Run Fay Run), Charlie Feathers' vintage rockabilly and a pan-kitsch sensibility that encompasses Zamfir, Nancy Sinatra's angst-in-the-pants take Bang, Bang and Santa Esmeralda's disco-era workout of Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood. Tarantino's contemporary Japan-Pop selections are no less giddy, ranging from Meiko Kaji's sultry Flower of Carnage to The 5.6.7.8's loopy Woo Hoo. It's everything we've come to expect from a Tarantino score (including dialog excerpts and a few sound fx stingers), with a madcap trip around the pop music world thrown in for good measure. -- Jerry McCulley

    BADBADNOTGOOD: III

BADBADNOTGOOD is a hip-hop jazz band from Toronto who's
doing a pretty admirable job at kicking the jazz world's ass back
    into relevancy."

    own vision"
    - Huffington Post

BADBADNOTGOOD is a young supremely talented trio of musicians made
up of Matthew Tavares on keys, Chester Hansen on bass, and Alex Sowinski on
drums. Since their inception at Humber College's Music Performance program
in 2011, the three have challenged the rule book on improvised instrumental
music and taken jazz tradition into the future.

With early champions including acclaimed BBC broadcaster Gilles Peterson
and Tyler The Creator who helped fuel their discovery with a series of live jams
that instantly went viral and dubbed them the "Odd Trio", the band released
their first EP BBNG in June 2011 to wide praise. The marriage of jazz virtuosity
and hip hop source material offered a fresh take on the traditional "standard"
applied to hip hop classics by taking on choice cuts from the golden era rap
cannon and writing inspired arrangements for them instead of one-dimensional
    covers.

The band hit a landmark by introducing original material into their compositions with BBNG2 in 2012. New songs like "Rotten Decay", "Vices" or "UWM"
carried on the proud heritage of musical juxtaposition by bringing together jazz,
hip hop, punk, and dance music into vigorous balance. Since then, they've won
praise from the four corners of the globe and collaborated with Frank Ocean,
Earl Sweatshirt, MF Doom, Pharaoh Monch and RZA among many. Their notorious live performances have brought fans across the whole musical spectrum
together, taking the band around the world from Coachella to Glastonbury.

Now, the inseparable friends are prepping to release their biggest project to date
III on prodigious young label Innovative Leisure, a highly-anticipated project
ushering in the group's newest explorations which are proving to be limitless.

    - ROLLING STONE

On his 2011 debut Will The Guns Come Out, Hanni El Khatib tried
    something he'd never tried before-making a bedroom-style
recording of his then stripped-to-the-skeleton guitar-and-drums
rock 'n' roll mostly for the sheer joy of making it. For his ferocious
2013 follow-up Head In The Dirt, he tried something new again,
showing up at producer Dan Auerbach's analog-dreamland
Nashville studio with nothing but the clothes on his back and an
    open mind.

But after Head In The Dirt's release and almost a year of relentless
touring, Hanni knew he needed to go past 'unpredictable' all the
way to 'unprecedented.' He needed isolation, time and the chance
to experiment. So after 30 days locked in hand-picked L.A. studio
The Lair, the result is the album Moonlight-the rarest and most
welcome kind of album, made at that perfect point in life where
confidence, experience, and technique unite to help an artist do
    anything they want.

That's why it starts with a song that sounds like a Mobb Deep beat
under a Suicide-style synth drone and ends with an
ESG-meets-LCD Soundsystem gone italo-disco song about life and
death. That's why it collides crushing crate-digger drumbeats
that'd be right at home on a Can LP or an Eddie Bo 45 with
bleeding distorto guitar, bent and broken barroom piano and
hallucinatory analog flourishes. (In fact, some smart producer is
going to sample the drums from this album and complete the circle
of life.) And that's also why Moonlight feels like the album he's
always wanted to make: "What would it sound like if RZA got in the
studio with Iggy Pop and Tom Waits?" he asks. "I don't know! That
    was my approach on everything."

It's a personal album in the most primal sense, put together in any
way that worked. Iggy Pop and David Bowie did this kind of thing
on The Idiot, the Wu-Tang Clan did it on 36 Chambers and the
Clash did it three times over on Sandinista. And now it's Hanni's
turn, across 11 new lightning-struck songs, each written and
recorded in its own flash of inspiration. It sounds like an album
made by an endless list of collaborators, but really Moonlight was
more like the first do-it-almost-all-yourself music Hanni ever made,
except after six years recording and touring, he'd learned to do so
    much more.

    Automaton

Gossamer is Evan Reiner-the producer, guitarist, synthesizer scientist and
urban-spelunking field recorder whose full-length debut Automaton dissolves
the genre-breaking electronica of Autechre and Boards of Canada into a
bottomless sea of found sound and ambient atmosphere. It's less an album than
an environment all its own, or a journey into the unexplored. And whether it's
inspiring a trip deep into the discography of Steve Reich or into California's
beautifully desolate Ansel Adams Wilderness, it's that fearless spirit of
exploration that brought Automaton to life.

Reiner grew up in the L.A. neighborhood of Eagle Rock with a father telling war
stories about seeing Black Flag and the Germs play and with a set of cousins
who'd get him started listening to hip-hop. (Especially instrumentals by
iconoclastic producers like Premier, RZA and New York's crushing DITC crew,
Reiner remembers.) As he turned 16, he was playing guitar "religiously," he says,
as well as listening intently to Slayer and Cannibal Corpse on the way to
ferocious hardcore shows on the fringes of Los Angeles.

By the time he graduated high school, he was a hardcore kid with a heavy
grounding in hip-hop who'd developed so tremendously as a guitarist that he
was practicing notoriously formidable Django Reinhardt songs for fun. The
connection might not seem obvious, but it was there nonetheless-these were
three distinct musical forms equally dedicated to passion, individual technique
    and total commitment to expression.

He won admission to the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston, where
his first semesters in the fall of 2009 were everything he'd hoped. But the more
he studied, the clearer it became that he'd need to strike out on his own: "So
many professors would tell their students what the right thing to do was in a
creative setting," he says now. "There is no right way."

He'd once used his computer just to help with his composition homework, but
now he was restless. So he began to focus on the potential of electronic music:
"I realized it was like having every component of a band at your fingertips," he
says. "It felt free and genuine with no distractions." He'd begun to make his own
field recordings, too, capturing the sounds of Boston at sunrise and stirring
them into his beat experiments. Intense study of movie sound and foley artistry,
like pouring sand across drum cymbals or using spent shells from a gun range
for percussion, gave him a whole new vocabulary, and he found further
inspiration in artists from Ai Weiwei to Maya Duren to Stanley Kubrick to Delia
Derbyshire-people who blew open the boundaries of their own disciplines.
Then in July 2013, he began to make what would become his first full-length
album as Gossamer. He'd rent an armful of microphones and hike to the tunnels
under Pasadena's eerie Devil's Gate Dam, site of suicides and barely-thwarted
summonings in the tradition of Aleister Crowley. ("The echo is crazy," he says.)
During a month in Japan, he recorded "terrifying trains" and cicadas and the
squeals of a rusting bicycle. He'd record himself smashing trash under a bridge
in downtown L.A., or knocking rebar against rotting wood 8,000 feet above sea
level in California's Ansel Adams Wilderness Area. Then he'd come
home-whether "home" at that particular moment was his own studio, a capsule
hotel in Japan, a friend's place in Boston or a temporary space in New York-and
"make accidents happen," he says, with recorders and samplers and guitar and
(this time) a stable of analog synthesizers.

The result was Gossamer's Automaton, a precise and gentle dreamscape of
experimental electronica, where the ambient atmosphere of Gas drifts across
the fractured beats of Autechre or Boards of Canada. It starts with its own
sunrise on "Thoughtform," where birdsong melts into ghostly vocals and waves
of synthesizer, and then shifts into the haunting "Print," which transplants the
sci-fi sensibilities of Vangelis to some desolate and wild new world. His "Okuma"
is like a Tortoise song that never touches solid ground, while tracks like [3] and
[5] recall the Brian Eno of Fourth World, somehow ancient and futuristic at
once. When the crickets start chirping on closer "-;- ", it's a signal that the
day-and the journey-are both coming to an end. It's might be his first album,
but it's also a first step towards something new.

"Automaton is me," Reiner explains. "It's my process. It's a symbol of having
accepted that there is a difference between being alone and being lonely. It's a
coping mechanism for the struggle to realize and balance what I am and am not
in control of in my life. It reminds me of playing Bioshock and watching Blade
Runner at the same time while naked in the jungle on another planet. It makes
me think of watching an old home video of myself and seeing Neptune right
outside my window. The list goes on and on-I could go forever."

2014 is the 20th anniversary of Tical, the debut solo album of Wu-Tang Clan member Method Man, released November 15, 1994, on Def Jam Records. It
was the first Wu-Tang solo album released after the group's debut,Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). Similar to all first generation solo Wu-Tang
projects, Tical was mainly produced by group member RZA. The album features guest appearances from several Wu-Tang members including RZA,
Raekwon, & Inspectah Deck. The album was a commercial success, reaching number four on the Billboard 200, and number one on the Top R&B/Hip
Hop Albums chart. On July13, 1995, it was certified platinum. This success was driven by its two singles, Bring the Pain and I'll Be There for You/You're
All I Need to Get By. Tical has since been hailed by several music critics as a hip hop classic and its success is matched by its influence as a major piece
in the East coast hip hop renaissance.
