    The Other Side Of Desire

In the hands of the eccentric jazz-pop poet Rickie Lee Jones, the phrase the other side of Desire could mean a lot of things. As it happens, it's where the gets her mail; the singer-songwriter has been living quietly in New Orleans for a little over a year. This past fall, she celebrated her 60th birthday with the Lost Bayou Ramblers, at d.b.a.

The Other Side of Desire is also the title of Jones' first album of original material in more than ten years. Written, recorded and rooted in the city of New Orleans, according to press materials, it was crafted with producers Mark Howard and John Porter, whose resumes are heavy with names like Roxy Music, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and the Smiths. (Porter, who also lived in New Orleans for a time, can count locals like the Honey Island Swamp Band, Jon Cleary and Tommy Malone on his personal roster as well.)

The album is pure Jones: warm and whimsical, with a keen storyteller's touch. This time around, it's infused with the sounds of New Orleans. Strains of swamp-pop, honky tonk and Cajun waltzes wind through The Other Side of Desire which, the release said, could not have been written without the backdrop of New Orleans; its river, trains, barroom ghosts and sudden bands all playing the same song.

Van Halen reinvented the sound of hard rock in 1978 with its influential and wildly successful eponymous debut album and then achieved even greater success six years later with 1984. Both albums would define a generation while selling more than 10 million copies each in the U.S. alone to earn diamond-certification from the RIAA. The band recently went back to the original analog tapes and remastered both of these landmark albums - Van Halen and 1984 - which are now also set for release on March 30, 2015 through Warner Bros. Records.

Considered one of the greatest debut albums in rock history, Van Halen took the music world by storm in 1978 with an 11-song manifesto that features some of rock radio's most played songs of all time and scorching concert staples like "Runnin' With The Devil," "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love," "Jamie's Cryin'," the band's signature cover of The Kinks' "You Really Got Me," and Eddie Van Halen's finger-tapping tour de force, "Eruption." Six years and five albums later, Van Halen had become one of the biggest bands in world around the release of 1984, which includes a number of the band's most legendary songs such as the #1 hit, "Jump," "Panama," and "Hot For Teacher."

Mastering engineer Chris Bellman, who remastered the original albums for Bernie Grundman Studios, Hollywood, CA, was enlisted for these new versions. In order to produce the original sound the band intended, Bellman cut straight from the quarter-inch tapes for 180-gram vinyl.

    Perpetual Surrender

DIANA are an enigmatic foursome from Toronto, where they must be putting something in the water with the
number of great bands hailing from there. Consisting of Joseph Shabason, Kieran and singer Carmen Elle, with Paul Mathew recently joining the live line up, Shabason and Adams met while studying jazz at music college where they played extensively together. Having lent their skills (saxophone and drums, respectively) to many bands, including Bonjay, The Hidden Cameras and Shabason's recent contributions to Destroyer's excellent Kaputt, it was a leap of faith to make their own full-length. But the time had come.

After a songwriting sabbatical in the Canadian countryside, Shabason and Adams went into the studio with engineer and co-producer Roger Leavens. They asked Toronto musician and vocalist Carmen Elle to sing on a track, as both Kieran and Joseph knew her from her work with other bands such as the much feted but short-lived Spiral Beach, all of whose members have since gone on to play in various successful Canadian bands from Austra to Doldrums. The pair thought her voice might add something special, this turned out to be a huge understatement. Even though Shabason and Adams wrote the songs, the lyrics and melodies belonged to Elle the moment they escaped her mouth, each nuance of phrasing and melody deepening the sentiments. With this last dazzling piece of the puzzle in place, DIANA was born.

Right from the first note we're reeled into DIANA's intimate world, with the dense, ambient swell that begins album opener 'Foreign Installation'. A heady mix of drums, electric guitar and lush production, all sewn together and lifted by Carmen's soothing vocal, their sound is addictive from the off. The pace is picked up with 'That Feeling', the detached refrain We were blind to all the ways we sat and watched it fade away echoing through a mist of synths layered over insistent drums and bass. It is future music with an undeniable pop sensibility,
though never overwhelming, the glossy yet sparse production always leaving just enough room for the
    imagination.

Album highlight 'Perpetual Surrender' boasts an impressive travelling bassline, with Carmen's gorgeous vocal repeating "I need saving from myself" over blown beats and perhaps the year's best indie sax solo, all coming together to create well over four minutes of eerie, blissed-out ambience.

Though there are glances to music past and kinship with music present, there is a progressive and contemporary feel to the record. DIANA comparisons traverse eras and genres; from the soft-focus soft rock and pop of Roxy Music to the dreamy production of jj and Chromatics, topped off with the Balearic disco swirl of Studio. While referencing so many, Carmen's unique vocal brings them their own voice. For DIANA, the point is to push things forward, summed up with the embryonic bliss of instrumental closer 'Curtains', a startling piece of atmospheric
production that stays with you long after the last sound has echoed into the ether.

    Get Back (On Sale)

It's doubtful that Stephen McBean set out to make The Great Rock 'N' Roll Primer when he started conjuring the
songs that would come to be Pink Mountaintops' Get Back.

The record's beginnings were reasonably straightforward: McBean had moved to Los Angeles, taken a long hiatus
from Black Mountain and an even longer one from Pink Mountaintops when he met producer Joe Cardamone, lead
singer of Icarus Line at Valley Recording Company in Burbank,CA.The two bonded quickly over Flying Nun bands,
Television Personalities, Roxy Music, Johnny Thunders, and Born Against. Joe was excited to meet someone he
actually liked. Stephen was excited to work with someone who said Sing it like you would've sung it when you were
    21. Simple enough,right?

But ask him to set the scene and you'll hear about a motorcycle shop owned by Michael Barragan, former member
of Los Angeles noise rock band Plexi. You'll hear about an endless supply of rock 'n' roll video documentation for
last minute inspiration or de-evolution in the living room.Ask who's on the record and you'll get a constellation of
greats:J Mascis(DinosaurJr &Witch),Rob Barbato (Darker My Love,The Fall & Cass McCombs), Steve Kille (Dead
Meadow), Daniel Allaire (Brian Jonestown Massacre, Cass McCombs & Darker My Love), Annie Hardy (Giant
Drag), Jon Wahl(Clawhammer), and Gregg Foreman (Cat Power & Delta 72).Randal Dunn (Sunn O))),Earth, Sun
City Girls, Boris) mixed Get Back at Avast! Studios (Bikini Kill, Mudhoney, Christ On A Crutch, Soundgarden) in
Seattle. Howie Weinburg (Nirvana, Beastie Boys, Danzig, Ramones, Slayer) mastered it in Laurel Canyon.

Ask about the record itself and McBean will tell you about Alleys, curbs, walls, and cigarette stained gig flyers. An
island on the Pacific coast. Fake British towns. Slayer posters. The beauty of youth. It's about listening to Driver's Seat
and 'Guns of Brixton' and hotboxing The Duster. And suddenly it becomes clear: when the aliens do touch down
and they don't know rock 'n'roll, you can play them Get Back start to finish, and that'll be all they need.

Get Back comes out swinging with Ambulance City, a head-trip of a song with a chugging, insistent, oddly timeless
guitar riff sitting front and center. The Second Summer of Love needs almost no explanation; it dives into 80s VHS
saturation and never comes up for air. Sell Your Soul is a deep sigh and a motorcycle ride, a roll in the grass
lamenting summertime blues with a little grit and a little harmony. And North Hollywood Microwaves is
downright obscene. But what better way to start Side B than this? You can listen at hushed volumes so your parents
don't hear, you can crank it in a dorm room, you can smirk to yourself from the safety of rock 'n'roll's old age.You
start to wonder- why don't all Side Bs start with a song like this one

The number of platitudes in music hit critical mass years ago, and among those tropes is that annoying, inescapable
mantra:rock 'n'roll is undefinable. And yeah, sure, that's true. It's different things to different people. It starts with
guitars, maybe, and ends with a stage-dive, or spit, or feedback. Rock 'n'roll is drugs, is rebellion, is youth, is sex, is
cosmic. It's wanting more than you have.Rock 'n'roll is butts and cigarette butts. And Pink Mountaintops might not
be the best-known band ever to make rock 'n' roll, but in Get Back they just might have written its scripture -- an
exploration and celebration of what, exactly, rock 'n'roll can be.

    Cut Yourself Free

On the heels of last years critically acclaimed debut LP, Under the Pale Moon, and Earth Has Doors EP comes the sophomore full length from Wymond Miles, guitarist of San Francisco garage-pop titans The Fresh & Onlys.

Cut Yourself Free assembles another convergence of moon-lit romantic swagger and post-punk massacred
urgency. Again self recorded and produced to tape, Miles' song-craft has emerged more refined and poignant, benefitting from the avalanche of his frenzied live shows, but also adhering to a more minimalistic fashion with crooning mid-era Nick Cave or Bowie/Roxy Music strains of pop-modernism. But what stands at the forefront is Miles' command of his textural guitar and vintage-synth sprawl
that on his choosing can open dream-like vistas, or pierce with an engine's snarl.

Turning to the narrative, Miles weaves each song with its own vignette of story line, often with a vaguely obscured protagonist/antagonist dialog. Relationships in Miles' sketches are always tangled, if not licentious affairs, but are presented more
as lustrous gateways to mend and revitalize rather than squalor in.

    Pavilion

Over the last four years, Seattle synthesist Panabrite (aka Norm Chambers) has become one of America s most prolific and proficient creators of transcendent electronic music. Although under-appreciated in his own city, Chambers has been gaining fans and critical respect worldwide with a torrent of releases that evoke the prime work of ambient music s pioneers, the top tier of kosmische-musik makers, and the more mystical end of the new-age spectrum. He is a disciplined student of a wide range of cerebral genres, weaving elements from these styles into his own distinctive tapestries, balancing melodic playfulness with compositional rigor. As noted, Chambers is an ardent explorer of great, underground music and it s demonstrated on Pavilion as a love letter to some Italian albums from the classic 70s era of minimalism and prog, such as Lovisoni/Messina s Prati Bagnati Del Monte Analogo, Franco Battiato s Clic, Claudio Rocchi s Suoni Di Frontiera, and American-to-Rome transplant Alvin Curran s Canti E Vedute Del Giardino Magnetico. Chambers praises their freewheeling studio experimentalism crossed with the most elegant, stunning (non)ambient music. He strove for a similar feeling in Pavilion by playing 90 percent of everything by hand and opting for minimal use of sequencers. Pavilion marks what Chambers calls a slightly darker and tenser offering in the Panabrite pantheon. He says it s a bookend piece to my 2012 album The Baroque Atrium, in that it deals with certain concepts and ideas of mind-space; an account of a place and time and of the experience while there. The album begins with rain patter (Chambers does live in Seattle, after all) and keyboards that trigger thoughts of flower petals slowly opening and feelings of wonder and great expectation. This is Panabrite in his most traditional new-age mode, but gradually the mood darkens as he coaxes out a melody of grand despondency. Things turn even more foreboding on Arcade, with its warped vocal blending into pensive, mobile-like Rhodes piano, whose beautiful bell tones smear and drone à la Brian Eno s The Shutov Assembly. The effect is like being enveloped in swirling stardust in a church tower. Memory elaborates on Arcade, its contemplative ascending synth chords sounding like a monastic ringtone. With timbres akin to those on Spiritualized s Pure Phase Tones For DJs, Arcade exudes a swarming menace. Chambers cites Regent as his favorite track on Pavilion, describing it as the epic struggle, the lay of the land before or after a devastating occurrence, yet with a pervasive optimism pushing up from the din. Alternately urgent and melancholy, Regent decelerates into an agonizingly poignant cosmic theme in the vein of Ashra or Harald Grosskopf. Another highlight is Balsam, which combines looped acoustic guitar with a delicate xylophone motif, and synthetic birdsong. The song carries the same sense of beatific calm and graceful ascension as previous guitar-enhanced Panabrite titles like Janus and Suite (For Winnie And Roxy). Fans of Gastr Del Sol and Mountains should take note. Pavilion s last three pieces Pool, the title track, and Quartz reflect Chambers increasing compositional prowess, his ability to wring maximal emotion through minimalist gestures. This concluding trilogy leads you back to land with a ceremonial majesty and balletic poise. In a catalog teeming with adventurous, evocative music, Pavilion ranks up there with Panabrite s most sublime work.
