    Root Down: Live

Root Down captures the king of the Hammond B3 organ, Jimmy Smith, playing down and dirty R&B. The album
includes two versions (one previously unissued) of Smith's Root Down, a song covered by the Beastie Boys in
1994. There is also a hypnotic reading of Al Green's pleading Let's Stay Together, which yet again proves that
Jimmy Smith is a man with a lot of soul. On 180 gram vinyl.

    Roots

Somehow this 1961 Reprise title seems to have escaped the audiophile must-have list. It's a true hidden classic and an incredibly warm recording. The small combo setting really allows these two heavyweights, Jimmy Witherspoon and Ben Webster ,to shine. The mood is laid-back and down-home. Accompanying musicians include trumpeter Gerald Wilson, pianist Ernie Freeman, bassist Ralph Hamilton and drummer Jim Miller. Roots was recorded at the often underrated or forgotten Radio Recorders in Hollywood, California. The studio, built in 1929, was one of the truly great - and great-sounding - studios of its day with an unbelievable discography of classics to its name.

Includes Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out and I'm Gonna move To the Outskirts of Town.

Jimmy Witherspoon made his first records with Jay McShann's band in 1945. Four years later, he would record under his own name with the McShann band and produced his first hit Ain't Nobody's Business.

    Roots

Curtis Mayfield's visionary album, a landmark creation every bit as compelling and as far-reaching in its musical and extra-musical goals as Marvin Gaye's contemporary What's Goin' On. Opening on the hit Get Down, the album soars on some of the sweetest and most eloquent -- yet driving -- soul sounds heard up to that time. Mayfield's growing musical ambitions, first manifested on the Curtis album, and his more sophisticated political sensibilities, presented with a lot of raw power on Curtis Live!, are pulled together here in a new, richer studio language, embodied in extended song structures (Underground), idealistic yet lyrically dazzling anthems (We Got to Have Peace, Keep On Keeping On, and, best of all, the soaring Beautiful Brother of Mine), and impassioned blues (Now You're Gone). The music is even bolder than the material on the Curtis album, with Mayfield expanding his instrumental range to the level of a veritable soul orchestra; and the recording is better realized, as Mayfield, with that album and a tour behind him, shows a degree of confidence that only a handful of soul artists of this era could have mustered. -- Bruce Eder

    Everybody Down

There's a strong, vibrant formal tradition in hip hop: the story rhyme. Rather than the bragging and boasting of many raps, in a story rhyme the MC presents a narrative-- a street update of Ovid or Homer if you want to get hifalutin about it. Traced back by some to The Message by Melle Mel, few would dispute that it reached some sort of a peak with Slick Rick's first album, and was carried forward by the likes of Biggie and Eminem. It also had a profound influence on rap in the UK, with artists like Roots Manuva using the form to represent themselves and their city in a myriad of new ways.

    Tear The Roots (Pre-Order)

The model where men control everything, and there's a woman singing on top of music that men have produced, for men's gratification, is breaking down, says Cicely Goulder. It's reinforced with children all the time, that girls should be doing specific roles. But it definitely is changing. Kaleida, who write, record, mix and produce all their music themselves, are a part of that change.

The electropop duo met when Christina Wood, who had spent many years looking for a musical partner, was put in contact with Cicely by a friend. The creative chemistry was there from the start. I feel like we intuitively get each other, says Cicely, who was working in film music at the time but jumped at the chance to produce Christina's vocal-led demos. Christina agrees. We have a special chemistry that?s not something you find all the time.

Tear The Roots, Kaleida's debut LP, offers a deep, unsettling kind of pop.

    Captain Of None

Colleen is French multi-instrumentalist Cecile Schott, who uses her voice and the treble viola da gamba (a baroque instrument with gut strings), to weave intricate stories about the human mind and heart. Captain of None is the most melodic album in her repertoire, with fast-paced tracks rooted down by prominent bass lines and assorted percussive effects. It is also an album that breaks new ground for Colleen in terms of production. While previous works centered around sample-based or looped, minimal compositions, on Captain of None Schott significantly changed her approach, setting her viola and her voice as focal points. Captain of None is inhabited by delicately crafted, other-worldly pop songs incorporating dub-inspired techniques.

    LANY

LA-based trio LANY make music that aims an arrow at your heart; beautiful songs with swashes of synth, often spare percussion, echoes of prime 1980s FM pop, of early-1990s R&B, of new-wave electronica, combining melody and lyrics to put down roots in your head. Recorded in a tiny room on an ancient laptop, their songs are devastating and beautiful, in a way that you can't quite explain.

Deluxe Edition Includes Demos And Live Tracks

Produced by Pete Anderson, the disc's sinewy mix of traditional honky-tonk, red-hot Bakersfield twang and rock n' roll attitude spawned a trio of hits including a cover of Johnny Horton's Honky Tonk Man, It Won't Hurt, and the title track. In the bigger picture, its stripped-down sound twisted together strains of Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Elvis Presley, and more--with a roots-driven rawness, it changed and revitalized country music.

    Capital Punishment

Big Pun remains on the best rappers ever list to this day.
Reasons for this weigh largely on his debut
Capital Punishment. His commanding voice and rapid fire
delivery make it clear there will never be another Big Pun. Pun
was New York. His confidence on the mic made him stand out
among his contemporaries. Similarly, the production -- by a
cast of many - remains ever so New York loyal. The close
cousins I'm Not a Player and Still Not a Player," may have
been the hits off this album but it is packed with so many more
    that show Pun's true abilities.

"Beware" and "Dream Shatterer" are great examples of Big
Pun at his best, dark cinematic production with just enough
room to let him breathe fire. On "Twinz (Deep Cover)" Big Pun
is trading bars with his mentor Fat Joe over a remake of Dr.
Dre's classic beat. Here Pun delivers one of his most quoted
verses that contains among others "Dead in the middle of
Little Italy little did we know that we riddled some middlemen
who didn't do diddly". There are numerous guest
appearances, the best of which include afore mentioned Fat
Joe (on several tracks), the Roots' Black Thought on the MC
showcase Super Lyrical, Prodigy and Inspectah Deck on
Tres Leches (Triboro Trilogy), and an extra-insane Busta

    The Family Afloat

This follows 2006's Appreciation Night (praised by the likes of Rolling Stone, The NY Times, Alternative Press, URB, and The Chicago Tribune). The Family Afloat expresses a crucial personal transition and a collective one. The band quit their day jobs to tour relentlessly, then made the communal decision to return to the more stable life of work weeks and strong roots. But there's no settling down in these songs: family life is raw and confusing; as uncomfortable and unexpected and rewarding as it is crucial.

Good Things Don't Happen Every Day

Like a lot of jazz organists, McGriff had strong roots in the blues. Here he teams up with Junior Parker to lay down some of those roots, mixed in with a good dose of soul. Along the way they find themselves in the funk, a later outgrowth of the blues and soul. Drownin On Dry Land brings the funk accentuated with some great drum playing by an uncredited musician on the liner notes. McGriff and Parker give a nice contemporary, soul sound to the classic Fats Domino tune Ain't That A Shame. It Ain't What'cha Got begins with a catchy organ riff by McGriff before going into a little vamp. Workin has a part in the middle that was looped up by Del for Pissin On Your Steps.--soulstrut.com

Going Way Out With Heavy Trash

The bastard cousin to Spencer's genre-demolishing Blues Explosion, Heavy Trash features Speedball Baby's guitar brawler and producer extraordinaire Matt Verta-Ray in a project that drinks down the best of roots, R&B and rock-a-billy. Going Way Out with Heavy Trash, the second offering from these kings of buzz saw guitars and late night incantations, was recorded in three different countries and features an international cast of musicians - Canada's the Sadies, members of Denmark's Tremolo Beer Gut and Powersolo, and New York City's Simon Chardiet and Phil Hernandez. Heavy Trash is what the name implies - filthy and hard - the soundtrack to the strung-out road trip from which there can be no return.

    Field Songs

On his forthcoming new album Field Songs, Iowa troubadour William Elliott Whitmore documents a vanishing American landscape with all the heartfelt soul and quiet fury one could hope for. He utilizes a powerful singing voice beyond his years and a stark dramatic sound rooted in bluegrass, blues and folk protest music. The new songs vividly evoke a life of struggle, humble resilience and family bond inspired by life on his familys farm along the Mississippi River.

Whitmore has made a name for himself both within the punk movement, where his populism and sincerity resonate with alienated urban kids, and the roots community, where writers like Andy Downing of the Chicago Tribune have placed him within the new pastoralism of Bon Iver and the Fleet Foxes.

    Forget The Mantra

Nightlands is the recording project of Philadelphia-based multi-instrumentalist Dave Hartley. The music he creates in his bedroom is itself a bed of delicate, chiming strings and bubbling synths beneath a blanket of choral vocal arrangements. Its dreamy in the literal sense, the seeds for the album were sown when Hartley began archiving musical ideas that occurred in his sleep with a simple bedside tape recorder. As a result his debut album Forget the Mantra is, in essence, a field recording of Hartleys dreams, a travel journal through pop music and a collection of psych-hymns from the first human lunar colony. The songs sound both huge and intimate, breathy and cavernous like massive echoes of a faraway concert. Its the big, shadow music from just across the lake.

The album deals with themes of anxiety, fear and the limits of concentration. Therein, it mines Hartleys personal history as often as it does influences The Beach Boys, The Traveling Wilburys and Hawkwind. Side A pulses with layers of tom tom drums on wide-open standout slow jam 300 Clouds and nimbly-picked acoustic melodies on Suzerain (A Letter to the Judge), like Crosby, Stills & Nash gone comsic-kraut. The songs roll and gallop then stop to breathe, always exhaling with what sounds like a thousand voices. Through its experimental back half, reminiscent of Bowies Low or Kate Bushs The Ninth Wave from Hounds of Love, full of vocal samples from Hartleys real life, the more pop-leaning front end is given greater context, like a close study of a plants blossom before traveling down through its root architecture.

Hartley, who for years has been a prolific sideman in many Philadelphia ensembles (most notably The War on Drugs), laid these songs to tape on a Tascam 388 iover several months, inviting friends along for feedback and ultimately, some additional tracking.

Every song works its way to that part of your consciousness that reveled in the fleeting waves of freedom that eked in once classes broke and the sun lingered a little longer over suburban roofs. And with three quarters of the band holding down Garden State roots its no surprise that a bit of Jersey indie-pop heritage sneaks its way into their sound, lifting the most sun streaked moments from The Feelies and Yo La Tengo and filtering them through the kaleidoscope of memories aimless drives through parched neighborhood streets. MARTIN COURTNEYs songwriting has a way of wrapping up the immediacy of youth with the ennui of age for the perfect shade of bittersweet bliss, mind you though, much heavier on the sweet than the bitter. Add to this MATTHEW MONDANILEs (DUCKTAILS, PREDATOR VISION) shimmering guitar strains full of equal parts sea foam and beer foam, pepper in the boardwalk clatter of ETIENNE PIERRE DUGUAYs drums, ALEX BLEEKERs staccato low end and the perfect afternoon is just a lawn chair and boom box away.Andy French (Raven Sings the Blues) Received a Best New Music, 8.5 rating from Pitchfork.

    Light We Made

Light We Made, which was produced by Will Yip (Nothing, Pity Sex), marks a milestone for the band, as this time around they've toned down their hardcore and punk-rock roots, to present a body of work that is dominated by soothing, harmonic tracks. The LP's coherent mood of transcendent moments are driven by the band experimenting with new sonic elements - weaving in dreamy synth chords, melodic guitar riffs, and atmospheric bass grooves and drum beats to hit home the delivery of the songs' emotional lyrics.

This album is the culmination of the last 3 years, and how musically the band wanted to be more creative than ever before. We took time off to experience life, pushing ourselves to try things that we previously hadn't, which in return inspired us to record something that would stand out. This LP is a sonic progression for us, and we're excited to share it with everyone.

    Dad Country

Nashville songwriter Jonny Fritz's work ethic and boldness have paid off in spades. It's been a big year for Jonny with opening stints for Alabama Shakes, Deer Tick, Dawes, Shooter Jennings and kudos from CMT and Rolling Stone, among many others. He signed his deal this week (he actually signed the deal with gravy at Nashville landmark Arnold's Country Kitchen), and his third full-length album, Dad Country, is set for release on April 16, 2013.

Produced by Jonny and Dawes' Taylor Goldsmith, recorded at Jackson Browne's Los Angeles studio and finished up in Music City, USA; this breakthrough album balances Jonny's trademark earthy humor and unfiltered worldview with some of his darkest material to date. Co-producer Goldsmith says, "Funny as they can be at moments, his songs access realities and experiences that we're all familiar with but sometimes fail to consider the depths of."
While immersing himself in the music world, Jonny began running marathons from Philadelphia to Barcelona and pounding out his signature leather works - the dog collars and guitar straps - seen all over Nashville and half the musical universe. He found himself in NYC for year trying to save a relationship, and its slow, painful unraveling (and demise) inspired Dad Country's bleakest, heartrending tracks, including "All We Do Is Complain" and "Have You Ever Wanted to Die."

These days, life has never been better for Jonny Fritz. He's back in Nashville again and putting down roots- and has even gone and bought himself a house. "It just keeps getting better. Now, the band is getting paid, I'm getting paid, everybody's happy, and we're packing 'em in when we play."
"This is the dream life. I couldn't really ask for anything else."

    Thee Gravemen (Awaiting Repress)

Raw, wild, horrific, and tons of fun is the best way to describe this two man horror-trash band from southern Sweden. These two English guys arent interested in pop fame or hit records. They live in a world of gravestones, monsters, werewolves and haunted houses. Sitting alone in the dark watching vintage Hammer Horror films and waiting for gravedigging jobs is how they spend their days.

Sir Lee Tea plays the guitar and wails, while Devilish Daz Trash pounds the stripped down drum set. Lee has his musical roots in the UK garage-rock scene, having played with the likes of crazy garage killers Thee Exciters and is also currently a member of top Swedish rhythmnblues outfit, The Branded. Daz, meanwhile, came from the trash punk rock n roll side of things having played since the 80s with psycho screamers Skitzo.

Like voodoo witchdoctors hunting for prey to turn into zombies, Thee Gravemen stalk the stage, spinning lurid tales of the human predilection for sin and mans capacity for inflicting suffering on his fellow man, all done with fearsome fuzz-busting guitars and crushing, boneshaking drumming to a sleazy Fall-like rockabilly beat.

    Carney (200 Gram Vinyl)

Hit Maker And Musician's Musician Struck Chart Gold With 1972 Album Carney

Analogue Productions Reissue On 200-Gram Vinyl

Mastered By Kevin Gray At Cohearent Audio From The Original Master Tapes

Plated And Pressed At Quality Record Pressings

Heavyweight Tip-On Old-Style Jacket From Stoughton Printing

With his trademark top hat, hair well past his shoulders, a long, lush beard, an Oklahoma drawl and his fingers splashing two-fisted barrelhouse piano chords, future Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Leon Russell cut a flamboyant figure in the early 1970s. He recorded his first hit single Tight Rope with the release of his third, and most successful album Carney, in 1972, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 200.

Two years earlier Russell had already played on hundreds of songs as one of the top studio musicians in Los Angeles. The Oklahoma-born pianist, guitarist, songwriter and bandleader led Joe Cocker's band Mad Dogs & Englishmen, appeared at George Harrison's 1971 Concert for Bangladesh in New York City and composed numerous hits of his own. He was in Phil Spector's Wall of Sound Orchestra and played sessions for Frank Sinatra, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, the Ventures and the Monkees, among many others.

But it was the top-rated Carney, reissued here on an audibly exquisite 200-gram LP from Analogue Productions, that put Carney into the league of extraordinary musicians. Soulful roots-rock yields to dizzying psychedelia on this, Russell's most famous album. His all-time biggest hit, Tight Rope, leads to Out in the Woods, Cajun Love Song, This Masquerade, and more! No link in the reissue chain was sacrificed, making this outstanding reissue a true audiophile masterpiece. Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio remastered the album from the original master tapes; plating and pressing took place at Quality Record Pressings, makers of the world's finest-sounding LPs. Lastly, as benefits a stellar reissue, we packaged our version in a heavyweight old-style tip-on jacket from Stoughton Printing.

Russell wrote scores of hits for others, among them Superstar, (written with Bonnie Bramlett) for the Carpenters, Delta Lady for Joe Cocker and This Masquerade, for George Benson. His own version of This Masquerade is featured on Carney. More than 100 acts recorded A Song for You, which Russell said he wrote in 10 minutes. Ray Charles' recording of the song in 1993 received a Grammy Award.

Sadly, Russell's life as a musical muse and performer ended with his death at 74 on Nov. 13, 2016, at his home in Nashville. He will be forever remembered for making a broad, sophisticated palette of American music sound down-home and natural.

Give Yourself Goosebumps: Ry Cooder's Cross-Cultural Chicken Skin Music Mixes Hawaiian, Gospel, Conjunto, Folk, and Blues Styles into a Visionary Roots-Music Tapestry

Mastered from the Original Master Tapes, Pressed at RTI, and Strictly Limited to 3000 Numbered Copies: Natural-Sounding 180g Vinyl LP Features Defined Textures, Intricate Details, Ample Airiness

The title of Ry Cooder's Chicken Skin Music - Hawaiian slang for goosebumps - serves as a direct, simple description of the album's emotional appeal. But it barely scratches the surface of a 1976 effort that triggered an interest in world music a decade before the term became commonplace and a genre into and of itself. Part of a series of inimitable mid-1970s records on which Cooder ignored traditional boundaries and instigated lasting cross-cultural communication, Chicken Skin Music blends gospel, Hawaiian, folk, blues, and Tex-Mex styles into a brilliant roots stew distinguished with virtuosic playing and inspired contextual surprises.

Mastered from the original master tapes, pressed at RTI, and strictly limited to 3000 numbered copies, Mobile Fidelity's 180g vinyl LP of Chicken Skin Music brings the brilliant instrumental textures and lively tonalities to the fore like no prior analog edition. Graced with silent, black backgrounds and generous soundstages, this reissue particularly underscores the depth of Flaco Jimenez's accordion contributions. You'll hear the air flowing through the reeds, pressure resonating from the bellows, and the wide-spanning timbres emanating from the register stops.

Equally transfixing are the lifelike manners in which the rich assortment of guitars come alive, with each note occupying its own space and portraying a character unique to the individual instrument, be it a slack-key, steel, or acoustic guitar. The result is a multi-detailed, organic-sounding musical tapestry that dazzles by way of beautiful interplay, unexpected dialogue, and connective eclecticism that proves music is indeed a common language when executed with a collaborative mindset, innovative exploration, and respectful authenticity - no easy feats, but achievements fully on display on Chicken Skin Music.

Jimenez, now a legend that's performed with everyone from the Rolling Stones to Dr. John, remains one of the keys to Cooder being able to successfully carry out what the latter deemed a mutuality in music vision. Cooder first heard conjunto accordion fare on a Mexican radio station in his car and proceeded to teach himself the instrument while committing himself to embracing the then-local, regionalized style for the set that became Chicken Skin Music. Jimenez graces three tracks, including a ravishing interpretation of Ben E. King's Stand by Me transformed into a spiritual grounded by a norteno structure and a romantic take on Jim Reeves' He'll Have to Go recast with a bolero rhythm and saxophone-accordion duet.

Chicken Skin Music isn't limited to South of the Border geography and tradition. Steel-guitarist and vocalist Gabby Pahinui and slack-key guitar great Atta Isaacs represent the 50th state on stripped-down renditions of Hank Snow's smash Yellow Roses and the wordless Chloe. Elsewhere, gospel singers team with Cooder on the Appalachian-tinted Always Lift Them Up, the midsection of which features the Hawaiian standard Kanaka Wai Wai.

Cooder bookends everything with a pair of Leadbelly numbers - The Bourgeois Blues and Goodnight Irene - chosen after the headliner witnessed Jimenez and his band perform at a local dance. Given their ordering on the album, techniques they employ, and themes, the songs also further tighten the thematic connection the headliner makes with the standout guests. In many ways, Chicken Skin Music is the equivalent of Buena Vista Social Club more than 20 years before the latter emerged. Experience it the way Cooder and company meant it to be heard - in unparalleled fidelity.
