    Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard

    Limited Edition

    Only 2000 Copies Made

Its far too easy to abuse the phrase living legend, but when used to describe Robert Wyatt, youre in no danger of hyperbole: gifted songwriter; political activist; drummer in the Canterbury jazz/prog pioneers Soft Machine and contemporaries of the original lineup of Pink Floyd; collaborator with the likes of Brian Eno, David Gilmour, Phil Manzanera, Fred Frith, Paul Weller, Scritti Politti, Elvis Costello and his beloved wife Alfreda Benge, to name but a few.

Perhaps his greatest gift though is his voice, a reedy instrument of great warmth and emotion; one need only hear his interpretation of the classic Shipbuilding (a song that was written for him by Costello and producer Clive Langer) and you shall be smitten for life. Domino is incredibly honored to be releasing a near-complete re-issue series of Roberts solo recorded works in the form of these limited edition LP+CD versions. Each title is limited to 2000 copies. There will be only one pressing so, once these are gone, they are gone for good.

Continually, and rightly, regarded as an emotionally charged masterpiece Rock Bottom, like all truly great records, defines its own moonlit world. Defiantly graceful, listening to Rock Bottom is like being invited into another person's consciousness: fluid, deep, mesmerizing and utterly unique. An intense meditative song cycle recorded in difficult circumstances Rock Bottom adds another layer of meaning to the term soul music.

    Shooting At The Moon

Shooting at the Moon (1970) is the second solo album of Kevin Ayers. Following the release of his solo debut, Joy Of A Toy, Kevin Ayers created The Whole World to take the album on the road.

Following the tour, the band (including Mike Oldfield, Lol Coxhill, Mick Fincher, Robert Wyatt and David Bedford), found itself in the studio. In October 1970, Ayers introduced the world to the Whole World with the release of his follow-up Shooting At The Moon.

Shooting At The Moon is a solid, unique Pop record. However, Ayers has presented the material in the guise of progressive, arty Rock. No songs in Ayers' discography are more representative of his amiable musical nature than these.

    Songs From Before

    Pressed On 180 Gram Vinyl

Beautifully recorded and cinematic in scope, Songs From Before carries a pensive, emotionally resonant tone.
Punctuated by Robert Wyatt's distinctive readings of Haruki Murakami's text, the music evokes forgotten memories or lost histories, bittersweet articulations suspended between a dreamy sense of awe and melancholia. Richter's compositions, created over a long period, draw from pieces ranging between 5 and 300 years old.

Featuring long term collaborators and friends like Brian Eno, Phil Manzanera, Annie Whitehead, Evan Parker and newer accomplices such as Paul Weller, Shleep is as exuberant and immediate a record as Wyatt has ever recorded. Clearly delighting in the process of collaborating in the studio again, it's a remarkable testament to Wyatt's muse that a record inspired by insomnia should produce such welcoming and restful lullabies.

Nothing Can Stop Us was recorded with a straight, simple, beauty informed by the experience of geopolitics just as the term was being invented. Arauco drew on the street 'mass songs' of a Chile protesting at the imminent arrival of Pinochet. Stalin Wasn't Stallin' was a playful resurrection of a barbershop quartet that sincerely, and unbelievably, aligned the USA with the Soviet Union. Most startling of all was Wyatt's version of Chic's At Last I Am Free. Breathless and hymnal it gave pause for thought for anyone who liked to use the words personal and political in the same sentence.

Originally released in 1991, Dondestan was remixed and reappraised in the studio in 1998 as Dondestan Revisited. Wyatt claimed he 'ran out of words' so by basing half of the album's tracks on her beautifully fragmented lyrics, began a song writing collaboration with wife Alfie Benge that flourishes to this day. Unlike its predecessor, Dondestan also reunites Wyatt with the top half of the drum kit, which makes for typically inventive, lively and reflective accompaniment.

Possibly as beautiful and assuredly restrained as anything he has done, Cuckooland was at 75 minutes Wyatt's longest work to date. After Brian Eno expressed concern about its length, Wyatt placed a half-minute break in the middle so people could go and put the kettle on. In amongst the light-as-a feather brushstrokes and Wyatt's own muted trumpet playing, is an ire and barely contained anger both at our inability to be humanitarian and the follies that get carried out in that word's name. Wyatt had done whatever is the polar opposite of mellowing.

    Third

Soft Machine released their third album, surprisingly called 'Third' in 1970. It is a double album with each side of the vinyl consisting of a single long composition.

Its music explores the emerging jazz fusion of the type present on Miles Davis' 'Bitches Brew', which was released just a few months earlier.
'Third' marks the most major of Soft Machine's several shifts in musical genre over their career, completing their transition from psychedelic music to jazz.

Third is a significant milestone of the Canterbury scene, featuring interplay between the band's personnel: Mike Ratledge on keyboards, Robert Wyatt on drums, Hugh Hopper on bass and newest member Elton Dean on saxophone.

Convening something of a supergroup to play through Rock Bottom upon its release in 1974, the cast Wyatt assembled here is testament both to the high regard he has always been held in, along with his natural ability to blur boundaries between such constraints as the mainstream and the avant-garde. The assorted heavyweights include: Mike Oldfield, Pink Floyd's Nick Mason, Mongezi Feza, Julie Tippetts and Fred Frith. The result is a glorious sound that frequently edges towards chaos and back with Wyatt's scat falsetto soaring above proceedings like a dove.

The End Of An Ear (On Sale)

Featuring significant contributions from his Soft Machine bandmate Elton Dean, amongst others, The End Of An Ear is one of the more adventurous titles in Robert Wyatt's catalog. It's an album much more in line with the electronic jazz experimentation of Miles Davis, and the avant-garde, than the singer-songwriter material Wyatt would later be known for. Despite being a very serious record, Wyatt's playful nature and sense of humor still shine through. The End Of An Ear is an absolutely essential piece of the Canterbury prog scene and Wyatt's canon, lovingly reissued here on LP by Cherry Red Phonograph.

Despite the desolate and somber nature of the subject matter of its songs Old Rottenhat has a steely sparkle at its heart. Played almost entirely by Wyatt himself, the record captures the sound of an artist in self-imposed exile brimming with melodic purpose. Often setting his voice with echo against languorous synth drones, the record confirms Wyatt has a DNA that can't help but achieve a sense of depth, grace and beauty.

    No Songs Tomorrow

UV Pop were an early 80's post-punk group from the South Yorkshire region of England. Their sound was regionally bleak and they used staccato, angular guitars lines, with vocals ranged from spoken repeated mantras to whispered and shouted political poetics. The Rough Trade charts for one week in 1982 tell a very interesting story. Alongside acts of the caliber of Sisters of Mercy, Robert Wyatt, Sex Gang Children and Virgin Prunes are UV Pop, their place well-earned.

    The Tourist (Pre-Order)

Pressed On Limited Edition White Vinyl

    Housed In A Gatefold Sleeve

''The Tourist'' nods to Alec Ounsworth's musical heroes--a group that includes artists such as John Cale, Robert Wyatt, Tom Waits and Nick Cave. However, this album also shows a natural progression from previous records. ''Better Off'' and ''The Vanity Of Trying'' are lush, keyboard-augmented songs, while ''A Chance To Cure'' and ''Ambulance Chaser'' are rhythmically askew, and the sighing ''Loose Ends'' is delicate, acoustic-based folk-rock.

    Fifth

First Pressing Of 1000 Numbered Copies On Transparent Vinyl

While the instrumental Fourth had forayed deep into jazz-rock territory, Fifth found Soft Machine working almost completely in the jazz idiom.

As Soft Machine moved further away from rock on Third [MOVLP183] and Fourth [MOVLP1602], drummer/vocalist Robert Wyatt's dissatisfaction with the band's direction grew and, by the time sessions started for Fifth in late 1971, he had left permanently to form Matching Mole.

Wyatt's replacement Phil Howard's propulsive rhythms make a vital contribution to memorable Ratledge compositions like All White and Drop as they gather momentum and coalesce into driving grooves. All White is focused largely on Elton Dean's sax performance while Drop ultimately showcases the intense busy fuzz of Ratledge's organ.

This is essentially a jazz record, more concerned with texture and interplay than with song-based structures. It's a trip alright.

    Wilde Flowers

    Import

Although the band name itself may not ring any bells for too many people, largely because it never relased any records during its lifetime (1964-1967), The Wilde Flowers were a pillar of the legendary Canterbury scene of the mid-to-late '60s. Band members included: Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers, Hugh Hopper (all soon to form the seminal Soft Machine) as well as members from another influential Canterbury band, Caravan (David Sinclair, Richard Sinclair, Pye Hastings, Richard Coughlan, Brian Hopper). In fact, much of the material found here could have easily been found on an early Soft Machine album. This 19-track compilation is now finally available on vinyl for the first time.

    Live at the Paradiso

Limited To 600 Copies On Soft Purple Vinyl

Soft Machine was one of the first prog-rock bands, but if your vision of prog-rock consists of musicians wreathed in pot smoke airily singing of fairies and wizards, it will be summarily dispelled by this fantastic "authorized bootleg," which captures the band in March 1969 at the Paradiso in Amsterdam, playing material that was to be released six months later on Soft Machine: Volume Two.

The trio of Robert Wyatt on drums and vocals, Mike Ratledge on organ and Hugh Hopper on bass launch what can only be called a high-decibel, jazz-rock sonic assault; "Like vindaloo for the ears" is how Hopper puts it on the accompanying notes on the inner sleeve, adding, "I do remember playing incredibly loud, Mike on fuzz organ and me on fuzz bass, both through hundred-watt Marshall stacks." Some of the frenzied instrumental passages might recall Miles Davis' Agharta-era band, but remember, this is a trio making all this racket (in 1969, no less); Soft Machine at this point in time were on a journey all their own. This is the first-ever vinyl release of this notorious concert, and it comes on "soft" purple vinyl limited to 600 copies. Anybody interested in just how far out rock got in the late '60s will want to give this repeated listens.

Originally released by Island Records in November 1974, 'Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy)' picks up stylistically where its trailblazing predecessor 'Here Come The Warm Jets' left off earlier in that same year. Here, a more assured Eno is at the helm, enlisting the help of his friends The Winkies, former Roxy Music band members Phil Manzanera and Andy MacKay, Robert Wyatt from Soft Machine and Phil Collins of Genesis / Brand X.

This new gatefold 2LP vinyl edition of 'Taking Tiger Mountain ' is presented over two 180GM discs which play at 45rpm for optimum sound quality.
