The Complete 1957 Riverside Recordings (Box Set)

For just a few months in 1957, two of the greatest musicians in history - Thelonious Monk (a seasoned master) and John Coltrane (a rising star) - recorded together in a studio. This deluxe 3-LP, 180-gram vinyl box set captures all of those sessions in chronological order. Originally released on CD, this edition features newly remastered audio from the original analog sources. An accompanying booklet offers an insightful essay by the late Orrin Keepnews, who produced the original sessions.

    Caravan

Caravan is the legendary jazz album originally released by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers in February 1963. It was Blakey's first album for Riverside
Records and was produced by Orrin Keepnews. The album is described as a slick, fluid, professional set of hard bop at its finest." (BBC)

    That's My Story

Although Orrin Keepnews' Riverside Records was primarily a jazz label, the company dabbled in blues in the 1960s -- and one of the bluesmen who recorded for Riverside was John Lee Hooker. Recorded in 1960, this Keepnews-produced session came at a time when Hooker was signed to Vee-Jay. The last thing Keepnews wanted to do was emulate Hooker's electric-oriented, very amplified Vee-Jay output, which fared well among rock and R&B audiences. Keepnews had an acoustic country blues vision for the bluesman, and That's My Story favors a raw, stripped-down, bare-bones approach -- no electric guitar, no distortion, no singles aimed at rock & rollers. Over the years, Hooker fans have debated the merits of his Riverside albums. Some much prefer him in an electric setting; others applaud the rural vision that Keepnews had for him. But, truth be told, both approaches are equally valid. While many of his electric recordings are stunning, he is also well served by the rawness that Keepnews goes for on That's My Story. From the sobering Gonna Use My Rod (which finds Hooker warning that he will shoot anyone who fools around with his wife) to the gospel-themed One of These Days, Hooker's performances are often compelling. Most of the time, he is joined by two jazz musicians, acoustic bassist Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes, both Cannonball Adderley sidemen at the time. However, the blues giant is unaccompanied on a few selections, including the autobiographical title song and the overtly political Democrat Man (a passionate endorsement of the Democratic Party). While That's My Story falls short of essential, it is a solid, rewarding product of Hooker's association with Keepnews and Riverside Records.

Featuring standout renditions of Straight, No Chaser, Bemsha Swing, and Rhythm-A-Ning, In Italy captures pianist/composer Thelonious Monk
flexing his trademark idiosyncratic chops on what would be his final recording for the Riverside label. Cut live in concert while on an extensive European
tour, this set from 1961 serves as a final reminder of the legendary catalog Monk built while recording for Riverside and hinted at the genius yet to be
recorded. Accompanied by tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse, bassist John Ore, and drummer Frankie Dunlop, Monk shines here, turning in more of the
style the set him apart from his peers as an individualistic player capable of consistently expressive, stylistic and sophisticated performances.

    Chet Baker In New York

A uniformly brilliant effort from cool-toned trumpeter Chet Baker in his first ever appearance as a leader for the New York-based label Riverside Records,
In New York is the epitome of West Coast cool meets East Coast sensibility. Teaming up with pianist Al Haig, tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin, bassist
Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones, Baker's laid-back mastery is on full display throughout this historic session.

Marked by an uncanny group unity, which gives rise to many outstanding supporting solos, the tracks captured on In New York alternatingly effervesce
with a California-cool introspection ("Polka Dots And Moonbeams") and percolate with driving intensity ("Hotel 49"). An excellent survey of Baker's style
and prowess as a leader, Chet Baker In New York is highly recommended as THE album to own for anyone curious about diving in to his illustrious

    Bags Meets Wes

When Wes Montgomery made his first amazing impact on the New York jazz scene at the end of the 1950s, a great many established stars actively sought out to record with him. Milt Jackson was one of the few for whom the guitarist felt an equal affinity. For one thing, they shared a strong love for the blues and Wes had learned, through years of playing with his brother Buddy, to value the vibes/guitar sound. To support this memorable meeting of thoroughly compatible jazz masters, Riverside assembled one of the most cohesive recording rhythm sections of its day in Wynton Kelly, Sam Jones and Philly Joe Jones.

    Kelly Blue

Recorded for Riverside, this set mostly features the influential pianist Wynton Kelly in a trio with his fellow rhythm-section mates from the Miles Davis bands, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb. Kelly Blue and Keep It Moving add cornetist Nat Adderley, flutist Bobby Jaspar and the tenor of Benny Golson to the band for some variety.

Kelly was renowned as an accompanist, but as he shows on a set including three of his originals and four familiar standards (including Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise and Willow Weep for Me), he was also a strong bop-based soloist too. A fine example of his talents.

As much as I'd love to relay all kinds of anecdotes about the challenges Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray encounter during the mastering sessions, I witness none. These boys know the sound of the facility and the Van Gelder masters like the backs of their handsBack home a month later, I unpack some test pressings Chad Kassem has sent meI hear the most realistic-sounding drums ever reproduced by my system. It's as though I'm sitting at the point of creation, experiencing the same high that brought such gifted musicians together as one. Steve Hoffman, Kevin Gray, Chad Kassem, and Don MacInnis have done Rudy Van Gelder and his Blue Note artists proud. Jason Victor Serinus, Stereophile, April 2008

The Three Sounds were part of the trio explosion. Begun in 1956 in Benton Harbor, Michigan as the Four Sounds and consisting of Gene Harris on piano, Andrew Simpkins on bass and Bill Dowdy on drums (the saxophonist was dropped by the time the group moved to Washington, D.C. in 1957), the Sounds eventually migrated to New York City where they were discovered by Lou Donaldson. After a single record for Riverside with Nat Adderley, the Three Sounds signed an exclusive contract with Alfred Lion on Blue Note Records. Over the course of five years, the Sounds released nine LPs and appeared on albums by Lou Donaldson and Stanley Turrentine.

Offtimes a look back at the past is not a good thing, but in this case it is something to be fondly remembered. - Audiophile Audition

One of the most hard-hitting sessions ever recorded for the Bethlehem label - and a rare date for the imprint by the team of trumpeter Donald Byrd and saxophonist Pepper Adams! The style here is similar to work the pair recorded for Riverside and Blue Note at the same time - razor-sharp hardbop, played with a strong sense of imagination, and plenty of room for drawn-out, creatively-blown solos. Adams is especially great - playing the baritone here with the leanness of a tenor sax - but Byrd is wonderful too, and really starts to break out of some of the more staid modes of his work from a few years back.

The group's a sextet that includes guitarist Kenny Burrell, pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Hey Lewis (another name for Mel Lewis?) - on titles that include Trio, Philson, Libeccio, and Bitty Ditty.

By the time that jazz icon/bandleader/percussionist Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers began recording for Riverside in the fall of 1962, Blakey had already been the spiritual center of the group for nearly 15 years. The unprecedented caliber of performers who had already passed through the revolving-door personnel reads like a who's who of 20th century jazz. On Caravan -- his first of several notable sides for the venerable label -- he is joined by a quintet of concurrent and future all-stars. Likewise, it could be argued that each has never again been presented in such a fresh or inspired setting as on these recordings. In order to establish with any authority just how heavy (even for purveyors of hard bop) the players in this band are, they need only to be named: Curtis Fuller (trombone), Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Wayne Shorter (tenor sax), Cedar Walton (piano), and Reggie Workman (bass). With Blakey (drums) firmly at the helm, these Jazz Messengers deliver a scintillating synergy that doesn't sacrifice intensity for the sake of cadence. The trademark give-and-take that graces the laid-back and sophisticated pop and jazz standards Skylark and In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning likewise is responsible for the palpable energy brought to the sizeable contributions from Shorter and Hubbard -- which make up half of the album's material. The title and leadoff track liquefies Duke Ellington's original arrangement and ignites it, fueling this extended fiery interpretation. Hubbard's first solo harks back to his own recording of Caravan, which can be heard on the Impulse release Artistry of Freddie Hubbard and was recorded earlier the same year. Coincidentally, that disc also features Curtis Fuller as well as a rare non-Sun Ra-related appearance from John Gilmore (tenor sax). Blow for blow, however, this reading has more than just an edge -- it possesses the entire blade. The melody snakes in and out of Blakey's strident flurry of syncopation. Another highlight is Shorter's interjectory solo, recalling his ability to succeed John Coltrane in Miles Davis' coterie. Among the original compositions, Shorter's upbeat Sweet 'n' Sour stands out as the most cohesive and ensemble-driven, although the singular group dynamic is well applied to the lively This Is for Albert as well. By contrast, Hubbard's Thermo is more angular -- taking full advantage of the musicians' aggressive chops. The 2001 20-bit remaster from Fantasy contains two bonus tracks: take four of Sweet 'n' Sour and take two of Thermo. This release can be considered definitive Blakey, bop, and Jazz Messengers.

    Sunday At The Village Vanguard

Few albums in the history of contemporary American music can be more deserving than this one of the designation Original Jazz Classic. It is the first of two Riverside albums derived from the legendary final appearance of the first Bill Evans trio - taped during the last day of a Village Vanguard engagement, barely ten days before the tragic death of bassist Scott LaFaro. The recordings have long been recognized as capturing the essence of the unique three-way interaction that characterized the trio. This album is further distinguished by its emphasis on the solo work and compositions of the innovative LaFaro.

    Waltz For Debby

Recorded live at The Village Vanguard in New York on June 25, 1961, this was the fourth album by the Bill Evans Trio, composed of pianist Bill Evans, bassist Scott LaFaro, and drummer Paul Motian. Scott LaFaro was one of the supreme jazz bassists, a virtuoso player whose playing changed the very conception of his instrument. This album unfortunately also represents one of LaFaro's last performances, recorded just days before his tragic death at the age of 25 by automobile accident. Interestingly the album also contains tracks that Evans had recorded prior to working with LaFaro, so that this recording provides a very accurate index of the bassist's great contribution to the trio.

    Thelonious Alone In San Francisco

The varied catalog of memorable Riverside albums by Thelonious Monk includes two solo-piano efforts. Producer Orrin Keepnews remembers them as equally successful but strikingly different projects. The 1957 Thelonious Himself was recorded in New York on three separate nights and involved much creative ferment and many re-takes. This album was accomplished with remarkable ease in Northern California two years later, in two brief sessions on consecutive afternoons (one preceded by lunch at a family-style Italian restaurant), with only one of the ten selections (a totally unfamiliar old pop tune arbitrarily chosen at the last moment) requiring more than one take.

This Is One Of Monk's Pivotal Recordings And Is An Essential Addition To All Jazz Collections.

Monk's Music is often cited as one of the focal points of Thelonious Monk's six-year affiliation (1955-1961) with the Riverside label. Although the original
disc clocked in at slightly over 30 minutes, packed into that half hour are not only the introduction of a few of Monk's signature compositions, but also
some amazing interactions from the assembled ensemble. Joining Thelonious Monk (piano) during these two recording sessions are Ray Copeland
(trumpet), Gigi Gryce (alto sax), Coleman Hawkins (tenor sax), John Coltrane (tenor sax), Wilbur Ware (bass), and Art Blakey (drums).
This special vinyl re-issue of Monk's classic album is not to be missed!

Among those recorded during the fifties, Prestige's Movin' Out and Colossus, Blue Note's A Night at the Village Vanguard, Riverside's The Sound of Sonny, and Way Out West on Contemporary qualify as all-time Rollins classics.

The session for Way Out West, Rollins' first ever in California, was called for 3 a.m. to accommodate everyone's busy schedules. Sonny, who could never be accused of overstatement, announced after four hours of recording: I'm hot now.

    Mastered by Doug Sax.

Way Out West is a piano-less trio - another va-va-vivid Roy DuNann production - with Rollins spinning quirky geometric patterns through odd standards like 'I'm an Old Cow Hand.' - Fred Kaplan, The Absolute Sound, December 2005 (included in Kaplan's Best-Sounding Jazz LPs)
