    Infra

DG presents the third physical release from Max Richter's Retrospective catalog, Infra. Written for piano, electronics and string quartet, Infra is an expansion on Richter's score for Wayne McGregor's ballet of the same name that was created as a response to the London bombings on 7/7. Infra follows Richter's latest album, Three Worlds: music from Woolf Works, an album featuring his score for another McGregor ballet, Woolf Works. This LP version of Info features the bonus track, "Sub Piano."

    The Blue Notebooks

Opening with a text from Franz Kafka, read by Tilda Swinton, over a sparse piano melody, the album moves through the heart-wrenching 'On The Nature Of Daylight' through to sparse but lyrical piano pieces, hazy swirling atmospherics, avalanche pulse-beats and partially occluded melodies. Other sounds were generated via old guitar pedals and vocoders. The organ music was made for a chapel near Tourtres in South-West France, whilst the environmental sounds are mainly recorded around London.

Peppered across Richter's music like diary entries (and backed with attendant typewriter clatter) are a number of literary texts or 'shadow journals' (from Kafka and Czseslaw Milosz's 'Hymn Of The Pearl'). Chosen by Max on instinct, these brief passages muse over time, memory, and the impermanent nature of things.

Hi-Q Records Supercuts 180 Gram Vinyl

Cut At Abbey Road Studios From The Original Stereo Analogue Master Tapes

Good - I'll play it three more times. The place was Paris, the Salle Wagram. The time was two o'clock in the morning, late February 1963. The speaker was Sviatoslav Richter, and 'it' was the opening Allegro, 188 strenuous bars long, of Schubert's Wanderer Fantasy. So starts the original sleeve note on this LP, which is unusually an account of the recording sessions rather than a note on the music. Ironically Richter disliked recording in a studio and preferred an audience but nevertheless the performances captured here are, as Gramophone remarked, really something very special.

This release was recorded on February 11-13, 16, 18, and April 11-12, 1963 at Salle Wagram, Paris with legendary producer Peter Andry and engineer Paul Vavasseur. Cut at Abbey Road Studios from the original stereo analogue master tapes with the Neumann VMS82 lathe fed an analogue pre-cut signal from a specially adapted Studer A80 tape deck with additional 'advance' playback head, making the cut a totally analogue process.

Pressed on 180 gram vinyl to audiophile standards using the original EMI presses by The Vinyl Factory in Hayes, England. Featuring the original album artwork, with notes in English, German and French.

The original November 1963 review in GRAMOPHONE RF remarked of the Wanderer Fantasia: Richter pounds away at the outer movements with just the steely brilliance they need. This is tremendously athletic playing, overpowering in effect...this Richter performance is really something special, quite apart from the fact that he is more realistically recorded than Brendel...

    Cello Concertos

The greatest cellist of modern time -- well, who could argue with a statement like that? After all, Mstislav Rostropovich is a supreme virtuoso, a charismatic performer, and a sublime interpreter and virtually every one of his recordings is as good as it gets for the repertoire. The key word, of course, is virtually: while Rostropovich's Dvorák concerto with Karajan, his Beethoven sonatas with Richter, his Brahms sonatas with Serkin, and above all his Shostakovich sonata with Shostakovich are definitive, can one say the same of his Boccherini, Vivaldi, and Tartini concertos with Paul Sacher? Or could one say that Rostropovich does not so much play the music of the great Italian Baroque composers as overwhelm it, that his virtuosity, his charisma, and his interpretations are more than the music can bear and that the listener is left not with fond memories of the music but instead with the overpowering impression of an unstoppable musical personality having his way with the music. The results are initially awe-inspiring but may ultimately prove to some to be empty. Accompanied -- the more appropriate word might be enabled -- by Sacher and the Collegium Musicum ZÜrich, the greatest cellist of modern times came, saw, and conquered the finest cello concertos of Baroque times. Whether that's a good thing or not is up to the listener.

Liszt Two Piano Concertos (Speakers Corner)

Any pianist who tackles Franz Liszts great works must possess outstanding skills in many areas. Technical prowess is absolutely necessary to play the extremely difficult score, as is immense physical energy in order to compete with the hefty onslaughts from the orchestra. But a great awareness of the unusual conceptual forms, refined energy and passion are also required to make the keyboard sing. At the beginning of the Sixties Sviatoslav Richter seemed to possess all these attributes in an ideal equilibrium. With youthful energy he catapulted powerful chords against the First Concertos defiant theme in the orchestra, offering resistance only to join in later with the lyrical maelstrom of the orchestra. In the Second Concerto Richter exchanges heroic brilliance for an elegiac air, then becomes capricious with graceful arpeggios and a lyrical, firm melodiousness that fires the course of the work. In the Finale these twists and turns come together to form an emphatic single strand of spirited theme, brilliant cadenza and blustering orchestra.

The impressive sound was captured by the highly dedicated Mercury recording team.

Recording: July 1961 at Walthamstow Assembly Hall, London, by C.R. Fine

    Production: Harold Lawrence

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Rachmaninov Piano Concerto

The Russian pianist Svjatoslav Richter is now regarded as one of the most outstanding artists of the present day. He was born in 1915 at Zhitomir in the Ukraine, the son of a musical family of German extraction. His father, who had been trained at the Vienna Conservatoire, was a highly regarded pianist and music teacher, who also did some composing; his mother was a gifted amateur musician. The artistic atmosphere of the family house had a decisive influence on the development of the brilliant boy, who was an excellent pianist by the time he had reached the age of eight. Ten years later he gave his first piano recital in Odessa, where he worked for a time as a chorus repetiteur. At the age of 22, he went to Moscow, where he completed his training under one of Russia's foremost piano teachers, Heinrich Neuhaus. For many years, Richter confined his activities as a piano soloist to Russia and eastern Europe. In 1959, however, he traveled by way of Helsinki to western Europe, where a few recordings had already made his name a legend. His concerts in the western world were sensational successes whose repercussions were felt for months afterwards, and he celebrated his greatest triumphs of all during his tour of the U.S.A. in 1960, traveling right across the continent to Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Brahms Piano Concert No. 2 (Awaiting Repress)

Cut from the Original Analogue EMI Master Tapes at Abbey Road Studios!

Gramophone critic Bryce Morrison described Richter as follows: "Idiosyncratic, plain-speaking, heroic, reserved, lyrical, virtuosic and perhaps above all, profoundly enigmatic, Sviatoslav Richter remains one of the greatest recreative artists of all time." Richter, largely self-taught, was an eccentric genius who often performed in darkened halls so the public were not distracted by any of his mannerisms: "...I don't play for the audience, I play for myself, and if I derive any satisfaction from it, then the audience, too, is content." He disliked recording and many of his recordings are live but once engaged, took the process very seriously and teamed with Maazel and the Paris Orchestra, these 1969 studio sessions for EMI were magic. Curiously, he never recorded Brahm's first piano concerto.

Cut at Abbey Road Studios from the original stereo analogue master tapes with the Neumann VMS82 lathe fed an analogue pre-cut signal from a specially adapted Studer A80 tape deck with additional 'advance' playback head, making the cut a totally analogue process.

In the original October 1970 review Trevor Harvey of the GRAMOPHONE wrote:

"This is a magnificent performance. As sheer piano playing, for a start - however much you may think other aspects of the work matter more, you can hardly help enjoying the extraordinary range of the pianism, for there is scarcely a passage that doesn't bring new delights... There is everything here; the power, the darting delicacy and, above all, the most beautifully expressive soft playing... I have a list as long as my arm of splendid things about this performance, from Maazel as well as from Richter. And not least is the piano tone, which is superbly caught in every way from brilliance to the most lovely quiet warmth..."

    Songs From Before

    Pressed On 180 Gram Vinyl

Beautifully recorded and cinematic in scope, Songs From Before carries a pensive, emotionally resonant tone.
Punctuated by Robert Wyatt's distinctive readings of Haruki Murakami's text, the music evokes forgotten memories or lost histories, bittersweet articulations suspended between a dreamy sense of awe and melancholia. Richter's compositions, created over a long period, draw from pieces ranging between 5 and 300 years old.

    Schubert: Trout Quintet

Sviatoslav Richter is universally acknowledged to be one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, renowned for his virtuoso technique and the depth of his interpretations. Dmitri Shostakovich said about him: "Richter is an extraordinary phenomenon. The enormity of his talent staggers and enraptures. All the phenomena of musical art are accessible to him." He trained at the Moscow Conservatory under Heinrich Neuhaus, who considered Richter "already a complete artist, who had the ability to build a piece so that it seemed to lie before him like an immense landscape, revealed to the eye at a single glance.

The Borodin Quartet was founded in 1945 at the Moscow Conservatoire - the first cellist a certain Mstislav Rostropovich was replaced after few weeks by Valentin Berlinsky - was also close to Shostakovich, who personally consulted them on each of his quartets. The Borodin Quartet, celebrated for penetrating phrase and warm sound, was Richter favorite chamber music partner.

Georg Hörtnagel is a German double bassist who used to play with Bayerische Staatsoper during the Georg Solti era.

About this Austrian live recording from June 1980 GRAMOPHONE said: "This is a performance of high quality. Sviatoslav Richter in particular precisely catches the cheerful mood of the music and the underlying shadows of which one should sometimes be conscious, and he plays those simple tunes in octaves so freshly that you'd think he'd only just discovered their charms."

Three Worlds: Music From Woolf Works (On Sale)

Following the success of SLEEP, Max Richter reveals his latest recording project - a new album entitled Three Worlds: music from Woolf Works. It's drawn from his music to Wayne McGregor's award-winning Royal Ballet production Woolf Works - inspired by the works of Virginia Woolf - and will be released on Deutsche Grammophon.

Just like the ballet, Richter's new album has a three-part structure, built around themes from three of Woolf's novels: Mrs. Dalloway, Orlando and The Waves. Fragments from her letters, diaries and other writings are woven into the work, with spoken words from Gillian Anderson, Sarah Sutcliffe and even Virginia Woolf's own voice, reading the essay 'Craftsmanship' from a 1937 BBC recording.

Max Richter explains: "When we began to discuss making the ballet, I hunted around for material of all kinds, photographs, memoirs, biographies. I never expected to find a recording of Virginia Woolf - this is the only one to survive. It's like a tremendous time machine which allows you to hear her voice and wonderful use of language. I've used spoken-word elements quite often in my work, so to come across Virginia Woolf reading her own words was like a Christmas present. That lit the fuse for the musical language of the ballet's first act, based on Mrs. Dalloway, and the piece grew from there."

Richter's new album, which stems from his longer score for Woolf Works, features a vast palette of sounds - from solo instrumental and orchestral episodes, to electronic textures and music for wordless soprano. It opens with the chime of Big Ben, whose unmistakeable sound can still be heard above the noise of London traffic from the distance of Gordon Square in Bloomsbury, where Virginia Woolf lived before her marriage to Leonard Woolf.

Woolf's suicide note, her heart-rending farewell letter to her husband, read by Gillian Anderson, sets the contemplative atmosphere for 'Tuesday', the album's final and longest track. The piece develops from the sound of breaking waves into a plaintive solo melody, constantly repeated yet ever-changing, and grows to become a dream-like meditation on life and death. "My approach goes back to the aesthetic pleasure of simple, well-made things," Richter observes. "I believe 'Tuesday' connects to minimalism in painting and architecture; within the realm of what people call spirituality, it connects to Zen Buddhism. All those things flow together in the striving for the maximum from the minimum."

Max Richter and Wayne McGregor are frequent collaborators. Richter wrote the scores for McGregor's ballets Infra and The Future Self, while McGregor staged Richter's recomposition of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons and directed his chamber opera, Sum. From Sleep

    Clear Vinyl

Acclaimed British composer Max Richter is about to make history, with a ground-breaking piece of work: his new
work, "SLEEP," is an eight-hour lullaby. An exploration of music, consciousness and human connectivity, the work is intended to be listened to while sleeping. The landmark work is played on piano, strings, with subtle electronic touches and vocals - but no words. This album, "From SLEEP," is a one-hour version.

Emmy-nominated composer Max Richter releases a new score for Henry May Long, a film about Henry May and Henry Long, two old friends from college who took two different paths in New York City during the Gilded Age. After meeting one day in the street, seemingly by accident, they rekindle their friendship. Together they take a journey away from the pressures of New York to the New England harbor town of New Bedford, where buried truths are revealed and change each man irrevocably.

    Spheres

Award-winning violinist Daniel Hope presents an eclectic and accessible mix of neo-Baroque, minimalist and soundtrack favourites, including works and
arrangements by contemporary masters like Ludovico Einaudi, Arvo PÄrt, Karl Jenkins, Max Richter, Gabriel Prokofiev, Alex Baranowski and many more
"Spheres" features a curated collection of repertoire celebrating the idea, first brought forward by Pythagoras, that planetary movement creates its own
kind of music, bringing beauty, harmony and simplicity to our complex solar system. This idea has fascinated philosophers, musicians, and
    mathematicians for centuries.

An album of broad consumer appeal, featuring a number of world premieres, and destined to drive interest in the digital space.

Music of reflection, contemplation and relaxation, this album can sell to admirers of Einaudi, Philip Glass, Karl Jenkins and others, as well as the wider,
    "chill-out" market.

Featured as main soloist on Max Richter's acclaimed "Vivaldi Recomposed", Hope is known for an effortless classical sound and intriguing approach to
    repertoire.

World Psychedelic Classics 3: Love's A Real Thing

These twelve astonishing tracks are drawn from a broad spectrum of early 70s West African psychedelic classics. Yet the fact that they scarcely registered on the Richter scale of contemporary underground music must surely be one of the greatest ironies of modern popular music, given that western counterculture drew so heavily on the musical, aesthetic and visual traditions of Africa.

Musically, the transatlantic links are strong and obvious; from the urban black American soul and funk of James Brown, through the West Coast sounds of Hendrix, to the deeper grooves of Cuban rumba and Latin percussion. During these years a nod in the direction of Detroit, Los Angeles or Havana was still more important than learning the latest lines from Lagos, Kinshasa or Accra.

    Why Pick On Me

The Standells' key albums for the Tower label (Dirty Water, Why Pick On Me, and Try It) perfectly bottled a rebellious wave of sound sweeping across Mid-1960's teen clubs, radio playlists and record racks. Starting with the genre-defining, proto-punk smash "Dirty Water", through a series of equally memorable underdog anthems ("Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White," "Why Pick on Me") and obscenities (the banned "Try It"), the Standells left an indelible mark on their era. Those three Tower albums are a veritable feast of three chord, fuzz-drenched, Vox Organ-driven "squares"-repellant.

For their second Tower album, Why Pick On Me, the Standells received a significant sonic boost with the move to American Recording Company. Legendary engineer Richie Podolor cut the best sounding records of the era; from the Standells, Chocolate Watchband, and Electric Prunes to Steppenwolf and Three Dog Night. The drum tracks on this album are simply not to be believed, the bass drum sound possibly registering on the Richter scale. Here the Standells build on their strengths with tough originals from producer Ed Cobb, equally-hard driving outside material ("Black Hearted Woman," "Mainline"), and notably, the emergence of Larry Tamblyn as a songwriter (his "Mr. Nobody" arguably the album's highlight).
