    Bartók wanted his Second Piano Concerto to be understood as a contrast to his harsh and - for the orchestra - extremely difficult First Piano Concerto. But notwithstanding its more easily understandable theme, this work too was composed using strict classical sonata form. With a bright atmosphere, fired on by the sound of trumpets, the theme of the first movement forges ahead and sets the course for the whole work. Lively exuberance and a committed interplay between the soloist and orchestra result in a work that is wholly positive throughout and which remains full of energy yet bell-like and accessible right up to the final movement.


    Bartok composed his third and final piano concerto in the year of his death -1945. However, the work in no way possesses a mood of demise but breathes a worldly-wise, cheerful, and mellowed atmosphere. Delightfully audible melodies, with a chorale-like grandeur in the middle movement, are woven into a rhythmically lively but well-rounded and flowing movement structure.
    With these two piano concertos, GÉza Anda and the RSO Berlin led by the legendary Ferenc Fricsay, complete their great artistic achievement, which began with the recording of Bartók's Rhapsody op. 1 and his First Piano Concerto (DGG 138 708). For anyone who possesses just one of these two LPs, the other is absolutely essential.

In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s.     Gershwin: Rhapsody In Blue, An American In Paris (Speakers Corner)

    This fast and furious orchestral work with piano, which begins with what must surely be the most famous clarinet glissando of modern times, was composed with the intention of presenting as many facets as possible of music from the New World in the short space of around 15 minutes. In his Rhapsody In Blue Gershwin wanted to »paint a musical kaleidoscope of America - our enormous melting pot, our typical national traits, our blues, our seething city life«. With this in mind, Leonard Bernstein made a number of recordings of the work and among the many excellent recordings that he made as a conductor or as a soloist, this present version with the Columbia Orchestra, from 1959, is especially of note. Bernstein takes on a double function as conductor and soloist and manoeuvres his way safely and surely through the highly diversified score to create a well-rounded picture filled with hefty orchestral dynamics and finely chiselled solo playing. In Gershwin's freely composed work the soloist and orchestra do not resort to bombastic shock effects or egomaniac keyboard acrobatics, and so this the work can be described as rhapsodic in the very best sense of the word.
    Most fittingly, on the B side there is another freely composed work - the autobiographical sketch entitled An American In Paris. The superb New York musicians paint the impressions of a visitor to the hectic French capital city - that too is the sound of America.

    Johannes Brahms: Alto Rhapsody, Song Of Destiny / Gustav Mahler: Songs Of A Wayfarer


    The Alto Rhapsody, Song Of Destiny and Song Of A Wayfarer. Each of these three vocal compositions is unique in its expression and construction, yet the frayed emotional worlds of all three works are connected by a multitude of fine threads. The Alto Rhapsody, which Brahms wrote as a wedding gift for Clara Schumann's daughter Julie, in whom he was himself in love, demonstrates with almost Wagnerian weight the anger that the disappointed Brahms must have felt while composing. The Song Of Destiny too, with its sonorous E major waves of harmony, soon announces in C minor the finiteness of existence as Hölderin's poem demands. That finally a hopeful, conciliatory - though unsure - moment lingers is reflected in the musical means. Many emotions and vagaries are emulated in Mahler's song cycle. The journeyman sets off on his wanderings in order to forget his unhappy liaison and strides through the ups and downs of mixed emotions and painful heartache. Drumrolls and march rhythms reflect the real world and sounds of nature, dissonances and a change between major and minor keys show the way from dreams, reality and feelings. The recording with Mildred Miller and the Columbia Symphony Orchestra under Bruno Walter has achieved reference status and is sure of a place in the TAS Super LP List given out by The Absolute Sound.

    Liszt - Hungarian Rhapsodies / Enesco - Romanian Rhapsodies (Speakers Corner)

    Born in 1881, George Enescu led the life of a globetrotter. Although he became acquainted with all manner of schools and styles during his thorough studies in Vienna and Paris, it was invariably folk music that provided him with the most important source of inspiration. Thanks to their freshness and impressive thematic invention, the two Roumanian Rhapsodies have remained firm favourites to this day. Nothing in the music appears to demand great effort or mental struggle. The colourful mixture of lyrical and spirited passages seems completely natural and homogeneous, offering sheer delight for the ears right up to the final chord.



    Enescus carefree hits serve as an ideal introduction to two orchestral heavyweights by Franz Liszt, which undoubtedly are to be counted as 'state of the art' works in this particular genre. Antal Dorati conducts the London Symphony Orchestra with a firm hand and complete concentration as is demanded by this tightly knit score , always managing to find the perfect balance between timbral force and transparency. Of course one can find elsewhere these compositions being performed faster, louder and with questionable sensational effects. But if you are looking for a faithful interpretation of the score, musicality and natural sound, then this is the recording for you.

    Chopin - Scherzo No. 3 / Brahms - Rhapsodies (Speakers Corner)

    The debut recording by the Argentinian pianist Martha Argerich took the public by the storm all over the world - and the applause has still not subsided! A mere glance at the repertoire shows that she was reaching for the stars. To bring five composers together on an LP of roughly 45 minutes length means nothing other than speaking five different musical languages - and Martha Argerich proves herself a master of them all! The demonic opening of the Scherzo in C sharp minor gives way to an iridiscent dialogue which sings and sparkles beyond compare. The Barcarolle rocks gently along; Prokofiev's Toccata is filled with dynamic force and nervous agitation; Ravel's Jeux d'eau is pensive and introverted, with the water rippling in a circular motion. As a contrast, the two famous Brahms Rhapsodies are performed with passion, impetuosity and occasionally the required heaviness.



    This recording is surely one of the brightest candles to burn anew on Deutsche Grammophon's birthday cake.

    To kick off the New Year in 1958, the New York Philharmonic and its music director Leonard Bernstein debuted a new piano concerto by Dimitri Shostakovich. The work, the second of his piano concertos, had been written ten months before for Shostakovitchs son, Maxim, who was 19 at the time. Bernstein, as pianist and conductor, not only performed the U.S. debut, but on January 6th he recorded the work for Columbia Records.


    One of the most versatile musicians of the 20th century, Bernstein was a great interpreter of the music of that era. Greatly moved by Shostakovichs music, he was one of the Soviet composers greatest champions. The Second Piano Concerto is often referred to as a fiery and youthful work, making it a perfect fit for the mercurial Bernstein. The performance captured here has the same consuming passion we know from his famous recording of Gershwins Rhapsody In Blue. It may well be the works definitive recording.


    Another work that will forever be associated with Bernstein as both pianist and conductor is Ravels Concerto in G. This jazzy and uplifting piece is a perfect playmate for the Shostakovich concerto. No one brought more to this work than Bernstein, who had been playing it with the New York Philharmonic since 1944. Like Ravel, Bernstein was greatly inspired by jazz and its clear (especially on this new LP!) that Bernstein understood the mood and syncopation of the piece like few before him.


    Impex Records new LP is a stunning time-capsule for classical record production during the golden era of early stereo: minimally miked, full of natural ambience and incredibly dynamic. The Shostakovich concerto was recorded in the enormous Colorama Ballroom of the Saint George Hotel, the location where Bernstein recorded Rhapsody In Blue and Tchaikovskys Romeo And Juliet. The Ravel was recorded on April 7th, 1958 in the magical acoustics of the 30th Street studio.     For his third ECM album as a leader, Chris Potter presents a new acoustic quartet that naturally blends melodic rhapsody with rhythmic muscle.     Between Bartók's Rhapsody for Piano and his First Piano Concerto lie 22 years of development, a struggle to find subject matter, form and his own musical language. While the Rhapsody from 1904 is dominated by a late-Romantic tone, which delights in a free, craggy and capricious feast of affable harmonies, the Piano Concerto reflects contemplation and a delving into the formal strictness of the classical three-movement concerto form. Rather less concerto-like and unconventional is, however, the use of the piano as a percussion instrument, which after just a few bars on the winds, hammers out an unrelenting staccato against the harsh and dissonant orchestra. In the slow movement too the piano is predominantly employed as a percussion instrument that, like the pendulum of a clock, rhythmically bulldozes on against the cheerless, bleak winds. Wild emotion predominates in the Finale. Stormy, insistent figures in the piano are answered by the orchestra with animated blows, but the quick flashes of melodies cannot establish themselves and are slashed to pieces as if caught in a storm.
    This uncompromising severity presents an enormous challenge that is mastered with aplomb by GÉza Anda and the RSO Berlin under Ferenc Fricsay.

    At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    In his early years, Deodato, 'the gift of God', cultivated a highly original art of give and take in his music. His score for Stanley Kubrick's science fiction film A Space Odyssey 2001 - a funky, jazzed-up adaptation of Richard Strauss's bombastic orchestral work Also sprach Zarathustra - opened the ears of innumerable cinema-goers to classical music. On the present album Deodato again rocks and grooves with works from past eras: Gershwin's Rhapsody In Blue is reworked rhythmically and enriched, while Ravel's Pavane unfolds hesitatingly over a velvety carpet of sound.     The 'new' classic Nights In White Satin too, one of the most congenial gigantic hits from the 60s, is staged by Deodato as a miniature slow rock drama just as perfectly as he cultivates his own very pure funky style (Super Strut).     Nothing succeeds like excess, at least that's the case with Queen's breakthrough classic, A Night At The Opera. On one level, the title is a reference to the band's operatic pretensions as evidenced here on the classic Bohemian Rhapsody. It also happens to be the title of a Marx Brothers movie, and the reference isn't lost on Queen, who seldom scaled the heights of pomprock without a knowing wink. The album is remembered for its meticulously produced bombast, but the truth is that there's a wide variety of material here, from the gorgeous piano-based You're My Best Friend and the McCartneyesque 39, to the music-hall-style Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon and the pedal-to-the-metal rockers Death on Two Legs and I'm in Love with My Car. A Night at the Opera is widely considered to be the quintessential Queen album and justifiably so.


    This fall marks Queens return to studio recording for the first time in 13 years, to commemorate that occasion, Universal has created the Queen on Vinyl Collectors Edition re-issue program in which every Queen studio album is to be released on vinyl LPs over the next two years.     Group's 1975 Debut Includes Signature Man on a Silver Mountain and Heralds Beginning of Powerful Combination of Ritchie Blackmore and Ronnie James Dio


    Wax Cathedral Reissue Comes Replete With Faithful Replication of Original Gatefold Sleeve; Pressed at RTI, America's Best Record Plant


    In 1974, Ritchie Blackmore's bandmates in Deep Purple refused his request to cut a cover of Quatermass' Black Sheep of the Family. Demonstrating impressive commitment to the song, Blackmore set out to record it with the help of then-emerging vocalist Ronnie James Dio and members of his band Elf. To have enough material to release this as a single, Blackmore and Dio collaborated on Sixteenth Century Greensleeves. Pleased with the results, the two fleshed out a full album and Blackmore formally parted ways with Deep Purple. Blackmore and Dio named their new band after the location where they initially discussed their collaboration: the legendary Rainbow Bar and Grill on West Hollywood's Sunset Strip. Rainbow was born.


    Drawing on medieval classical progressions for inspiration, Blackmore paired textured playing paired with Dio's fantastical lyrical imagery and inimitable vocals. The combination set Rainbow apart from its hard rock contemporaries. Featuring what would prove to be Rainbow's signature tune, Man on the Silver Mountain, Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow is a dynamic voyage. Blackmore's somber, melodic playing weaves a mystical tapestry over which Dio's tales of drawbridges, crossbows, and kings settle like a knight on his steed. This influential classic concludes with a flourish, as a cover of the Yardbirds' Gregorian chant-influenced instrumental Still I'm Sad proves a perfect pulpit for Blackmore's rhapsody-like soloing.


    Complete with a faithful replication of the original gatefold sleeve and featuring dead-quiet surfaces, this Wax Cathedral reissue is pressed at RTI, America's best record plant. Even better, it's on colored vinyl.
