The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Plays The Music Of Rush

Purple Pyramid Records, a division of Cleopatra Records, will release The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Plays The Music Of Rush on November 13. Nearly sixty musicians and thirty vocalists transform nine of Rush's greatest hits into even more intricate, soaring orchestral works.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra covers the best-known classics, from Working Man, the self-titled debut album track that launched Rush's career in the U.S. to Subdivisions from Signals, the album that proved electronic rock could reside in the top ten. The band's most successful record, Moving Pictures, is represented by rousing versions of Tom Sawyer and Red Barchetta. Special guest guitarists include Steve Rothery of Marillion on Working Man and Adrian Smith of Iron Maiden on Red Barchetta. The Windrush Choir provides backing vocals and solos.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, formed in 1946 and based in London, has been called the nation's favorite orchestra. It has had internationally known maestros like Andre Previn and Louis Clark, and has toured the world. The RPO is a best-selling and adventurous recording entity as well. In 1969, it recorded a concerto for Deep Purple, composed by the band's organist Jon Lord. It earned a top ten U.S. single in 1982 with Hooked On Classics. Over the years, RPO has orchestrally arranged Pink Floyd, Oasis, Queen, R.E.M., Madonna and ABBA.

The orchestra was recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London, conducted by BAFTA Award-winning musician and composer Richard Harvey. Harvey performed with the prog rock group Gryphon and as an accomplished multi-instrumentalist (specializing in mediaeval and Renaissance periods), worked with many folk and rock musicians such as Richard and Linda Thompson, Kate Bush and Sweet. He has toured and recorded with John Williams, and has performed and composed film/TV soundtracks for more than thirty years. The album was produced by James Graydon and Richard Cottle, who also arranged all the music.

Bach: 1-6 Solo Cello Suites (Speakers Corner)

Today it is difficult to understand that despite the tremendous Bach renaissance that took place in the 19th century many compositions by the Cantor of St. Thomas's Church in Leipzig had been underrated. The Cello Suites, for example, have been regarded for almost 300 years as purely a set of tricky etudes that every virtuoso in the making simply must tackle. What recording engineers and their equipment can bring to the ears is quite astounding. So it was back in the Thirties with Pablo Casal's legendary recording against which every cellist is measured today and to whose perfection he aspires.

Janos Starker's recording of the Suites from 1965 makes a lasting impression on the listener, even when compared with other recordings from the digital era, and even record producers who are well used to recorded excellence have been highly impressed. For Charlotte Gilbert of the Mercury record label, these recording sessions were one of five truly great events in all her 20 years of recording experience.

Without a doubt, Starker allows his instrument to resound freely but without forcing the tone. Starker's full-bodied sound and technical brilliance are complemented by his finely chiselled interpretation that lends immense expression to Bach's thrilling harmony and verve to the strict rhythmic construction of the movements. Just listen to his organ-like double-stopped passages, the eloquent dialogues, and the pure excitement created by his highly individual treatment of tempo. Then you will surely agree with the often-quoted paradox that Bach's Cello Suites are 'polyphony for a solo instrument'.

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Find A Way To Care (Awaiting Repress)

For over 50 years, John Mayall has served as a pioneer of blues music, rightly earning him the title, "The Godfather of British Blues." In 2013, John signed with producer Eric Corne's label, Forty Below Records, and has since been experiencing a true artistic and career renaissance.

This revival continues with the release of a brilliant new studio album titled "Find a Way to Care," produced by John and Eric at famed House of Blues Studios in Encino, California. About the new album, Corne says, I really wanted to feature John's keyboard playing on this record. He's truly one of the most lyrical, economical and underrated keyboardists around. We also wanted to change things up a bit after the success of A
Special Life and the addition of a horn section on several tracks was a really fun way to do that. As good as the last album was, I think this one is even better.

On the new album, John adds harmonica on two songs, as well as a classic guitar track reminiscent of Hubert Sumlin or Muddy Waters on the latter's legendary Long Distance Call. He is joined by his killer touring band: Rocky Athas (guitar), Greg Rzab (bass) and Jay Davenport (drums).

The release of "Find a Way to Care" comes on the heels of Mayall's internationally acclaimed, A Special Life" in 2014. I'd easily put this one among Mayall's best efforts - and that includes 'Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton,' 'A Hard Road' and 'Blues from Laurel Canyon!'"

Six number one albums, six Grammy awards, six CMA awards, nine ACM awards, 10 AMA awards, seven Dove awards, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Very few artists have a resume like that. The final result is a technical tour de force that also invites a fuller appreciation of The Who's own achievement, bringing to the fore all the original elements of chorale music, vaudevillian schmaltz and Renaissance chamber ensemble playing.

    Aion

With the industrial textures of their eponymous debut behind them, the fifth album from Dead Can Dance (Aion, released in 1990) is perhaps the most focused and concise of their albums. Predominately recorded at their own studio in Southern Ireland, it features guest vocals from soprano David Navarro Sust. His vocals add to Brendan and Lisa's opposing yet complimentary styles. The Middle Ages and the early Renaissance are a core influence for Aion; an atmosphere only amplified by the album's cover, a section from the Earth phase of Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch's famed triptych, The Garden of Earthly Delights.

Working with some of the hottest young producers on the Jamaican dancehall circuit - Steven Lenky Marsden, Don Corleone, Renaissance Crew, and Snowcone, to name a few - Sean spent three years completing his third album THE TRINITY. And although many of the biggest names in hip-hop wanted to work with him, Sean is proud to say that it was all done right here in the Third World. Hence trinity, a spiritual concept that signifies a unity of three in one. It's been said that three is a magic number, and THE TRINITY is definitely a blessed piece of work. Sean possesses an almost supernatural ability to create irresistible hooks that can fill up any dance floor.

    Watermelon Slim Direct-To-Disc

Bill Watermelon Slim Homans is nothing if not a renaissance man. He attended Middlebury College in Vermont on a fencing scholarship but dropped out to enlist in the Army for the Vietnam War. While laid up in a Vietnam hospital bed, he taught himself upside-down, left-handed slide guitar. He worked as a truck driver, a forklift operator, a saw mill hand, a funeral officiator and at times as a small-time criminal. Due to the latter vocation, he fled Boston to lay low in Oklahoma where he farmed watermelons, hence his stage name. Hes earned two undergrad degrees along with a master's. He painted art and briefly joined Mensa. Oh, and he likes to read Shakespeare and bowls a steady 240.

No surprise then that he draws from a plenty diverse range of influences to form his unique brand of raw and honest blues. Its music as interesting as the man.

    The Wild Places

After two critically acclaimed albums showing his Renaissance influenced acoustic guitar picking, Duncan Browne went full-on electric half way through the Seventies with both his newly formed band Metro and several solo albums. It brought him near the cutting edge of the music industry and the closest he ever got to rock stardom, his records sought after in locales like New York's East Village and played on American college radio stations.

The Wild Places is the first of these electric solo albums, featuring the hit single title tack. Originally released in 1978, the music has a sense of drama closer to Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music than his previous efforts. Featuring a fierce sound with lush keyboards and beautiful melodies, this is Browne at the top of his game.

    Parish Bar (Discontinued) (On Sale)

A modern-day Renaissance Man, Jeb Loy Nichols is a musician, songwriter and visual artist whose creative path has taken him from his birthplace in the Midwest, to London, and rural Wales. Parish Bar ôwas made at home, over the past couple years, in between other projects. Some of the tracks came quickly, other tracks crawled into being, a layer at a time,ö Nichols explains. ôIt all started because I was involved in doing a series of wood cuts entitled Ghost Yard. Ghost Yard was a public park in the Bronx where Afrika Bambaataa birthed Zulu Nation and helped bring about the age of hip-hop. When I lived in NYC in 1979 - 83, I went to the parties that Bambaataa threw there. Like the music, the parties were grass roots affairs, a collection of sounds and influences that said: what you see is what you get! This is who we are and thatÆs what I wanted to say with Parish Bar. This is who I was and who I am! No big deal, just relax and have a good time.

    Blues In Orbit

Duke Ellington is seen by many as one of the frontrunners of Jazz and as one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. He was a part of the Harlem Renaissance and many feel that because of him, Jazz gained recognition as a art form.

Many of his instrumental songs have become Jazz standards, and his distinctive style remains a shining beacon in music. Thanks to a stellar performance at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1957 there was a renewed interest in his music and his orchestra, and they performed all over the world.

Blues In Orbit was mostly recorded during one after-midnight session after they had returned from a run of shows in Europe. It presents a Big Band in full swing; there is true synergy at work here that could only come from a group of musicians that expect - and get - the best from each other. Free flowing improvisations and straightforward arrangements show a band that is kicking back, relaxing, and doing it nice 'n' easy.

    Signs & Signifiers

Named as an artist you should know in 2011 by NPR, singer/songwriter JD McPherson makes his Rounder Records debut with the release of Signs & Signifiers which All Music calls a rockin', bluesy, forward-thinking album that subtly breaks the conventions of most vintage rock projects. McPherson is an artist with an unaffected take on vital American music and a voice that channels the spirit of Little Richard and James Brown.

The seductively kickass 12-song set finds this renaissance man/hepcat seamlessly meshing the old and the new, the primal and the sophisticated, on a work that will satisfy traditional American rock 'n' roll and R&B purists while also exhibiting McPherson's rarified gift for mixing and matching disparate stylistic shapes and textures. Recorded on analog equipment through vintage microphones and a 1960s Berlant 1/4 inch tape machine, Signs & Signifiers marks the arrival of an authentic, gutsy American artist.

Featuring JD McPherson (lead and backing vocals, guitar), Jimmy Sutton (bass), and Alex Hall (drums, piano, organ), the album also hosts an array of guest musicians, including Scott Ligon on piano (NRBQ's Terry Adams Rock & Roll Quartet); Jonathan Doyle (Nick Curran & the Lowlifes, White Ghost Shivers); Chicago's Josh Bell (The Del Moroccos) on tenor and baritone saxophones; Susan Voelz (Alejandro Escovedo, Poi Dog Pondering) on violin; Allison Chesley (Helen Money) on cello; and Joel Paterson (The Modern Sounds) lends choice guitar work to the Joey Simone classic Your Love (All That I'm Missing).

Motion City Soundtrack have built their fanbase one fan at a time, through breakout tours with All American Rejects and Fallout Boy, on the 2006 Warped Tour and mtvU's Campus Invasion, and at festivals like Bamboozle and Lollapalooza. They have appeared on Conan O'Brien and Jimmy Kimmel, earned glowing press from Rolling Stone to Entertainment Weekly, and received solid support at MTV, FUSE, and MTV2.

Now Motion City Soundtrack are in the midst of a career renaissance as they return to their longtime label Epitaph to release Go, the most mature and developed album of their 14year career. Continuing a dichotomy between upbeat music and darker lyricism that stretches back to their breakout single "The Future Freaks Me Out," Go sees the band both maturing lyrically and musically while reinvigorating the signature melodic, keyboarddriven sound that their longtime fans love.

Despite the fullcircle musical evolution they've undergone with Go, the band members agree that in some ways they feel like the same way they did when Motion City Soundtrack was starting to make their mark in the early 2000s.

    It's Reggae

"Rafter Roberts is one of those guys you just can't ignore . .
. this dude is awesome. "
    ~ Maris Jensen, CMJ

"Rafter Roberts is quite the musical renaissance man." -
    Cleveland Scene

"One of the most intense and powerful music nerds you may
    ever meet." - Verbicide Magazine

    Dear Reggae,

I know it's only been a couple days but I miss you already.
There's so much about you that I love - the way you approach situations in a relaxed and positive way, the way you
absorb whatever strange element come at you and you just
fold it into your nature. I admire you and your ease in the
world, but it also stirs my anxieties about life - why can't I be
so cool, relaxed, so positive? I'm always wrapped up in my
crazy modern brain and life. But then I wonder, are you too? Maybe you're just as conflicted and human, but everyday you make the choice to express yourself in an uplifting and
unselfconscious way. Can you show me how to do that? I
love you, Reggae, and I want to learn.

    A Next Generation Subchassis Turntable

The TD 350 revives the legendary Thorens tradition and concept of the suspended chassis. The construction of the TD 350 ingeniously combines the advantages of a mass platform with those of the suspended chassis. This tried and tested concept as well as traditional manufacturing quality make the TD 350 a record player that will satisfy even the most discerning demands. Experience the renaissance of an outstanding technology being employed again in combination with the latest engineering knowledge and high-tech materials.

The TD 350 is equipped with the proprietary Thorens IDD (Independent Double Damping) suspension system, which yields an independent dampening of horizontal and vertical oscillations. Together with the 4-kg-platter and low-friction bearing this results in incredible silent running and exceptional sonic stability. The integrated motor control circuitry takes care of highly precise rpm by means of electronic stabilization. Additional features, such as the precision-ground belt, a solid turned platter combined with a layer of bitumen, the absolutely silent AC synchronous motor and, last but not least, the fine TP 92 tonearm further enhance the outstanding sound quality of the TD 350.

    Highlights

"Mixed Emotions falls right into place, then, indulging both musical and emotional nostalgia without falling victim to any particular trend." - SPIN

"Toto would be proud." - CMJ

Highlights, the band's first collection of new material since their critically-lauded debut, Mixed Emotions, in 2012, began in a basement in Pittsburgh and ended in a church in Brooklyn. It trades world music sounds for a more alive, realized approach, the result of Emm and Cohen knowing they wanted to break from their 'two
    guys, one screen' writing style.

Influenced by their time spent on the road touring Mixed Emotions, primarily in the States, they
reached for the sounds of 90's New York hip-hop drums, Detroit techno synths, and lots and lots
of guitars. The result could almost be called an homage to the sonics of America, if that sort of
phrase wouldn't make the band cringe. Instead, let's just call Highlights "the album where things
started making more sense." Between working in Los Angeles with producer Patrick Ford, and
their hometown of New York City with Chris Taylor (Grizzly Bear) in his 100 year-old church studio,
they eventually settled on the ten songs that make up the record.

Highlights is like a renaissance for a band that began in 2008 as a one-off remix project. The upbeat dancefloor-ready tracks are imbued with colors and emotional range that go much deeper than ever before, with Emm's vocals and lyrics, at once personal and observational, taking center stage.

    Labcabincalifornia

The Pharcyde's landmark Labcabincalifornia just hit its 20th anniversary, having originally been released on November 14th, 1995. The Bicycle Music Company celebrates with an all new pressing of the double gatefold LP. The Pharcyde released Labcabincalifornia, their follow up to their legendary debut Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde (itself released on November 24th, 1992) with the album ultimately launching three singles, "Runnin'", "She Said" and "Drop" (which would go on to massive MTV music video fame due to it's first ever entirely backwards filmed video directed by Spike Jonze).

Over the next 20 years, the legacy of The Pharcyde and Labcabincalifornia has continued to rise. In the case of Labcabincalifornia, that's in no small part due to the production work on the project from the legendary Jay Dee, aka J Dilla. "If Labcabincalifornia came out today, boasting production by J Dilla on seven out of 17 tracks would be a big deal..." - Complex Magazine

"Labcabincalifornia is an artistic breakthrough, and because of the deep shift in hip-hop production in the last two decades, the timelessness of the album is more apparent than ever." - Treble Music's Induction of Labcabincalifornia into their Hall Of Fame "Years ahead of its time for a scene still hung over from The Chronic, Labcabincalifornia was an underappreciated album that would almost certainly have fared better amidst the alt-rap renaissance of 1999." - Rap Reviews
