    Chronic Town

Chronic Town established R.E.M.'s signature sound immediately, expanding the jangling riffs of their debut single, Radio Free Europe, into a full-fledged modus operandi. Recorded at Mitch Easter's Drive-In Studios, the EP has an endearingly ragged sound -- it's a garage band playing jangling pop songs, and while the music is melodic and memorable, it has an underground mentality that keeps it from sounding conventional. Their songwriting is distinctive, with Gardening at Night, Wolves, Lower, and Carnival of Sorts (Box Cars) ranking as early classics.

Urgent 1987 Breakthrough Catapulted Band to Stardom: Includes Classics Such as "The One I Love" and Unforgettable "It's the End of the World As We Know It"

Half-Speed Mastered From the Original Master Tapes: RTI-Pressed 180 gram LP Abounds With Incredible Dynamics, Faithful Tonalities, and Tremendous Imaging

Scott Litt-Produced Set Overflows With Mature Creativity, Fiery Intent, Catchy Hooks, and Stellar Songwriting

The last album R.E.M. made before migrating to Warner Bros., and very arguably the last start-to-finish masterpiece the band created in its acclaimed career, Document turned Georgia's celebrated sons into mainstream stars. Musically unadulterated and sonically pure, the group's 1987 work epitomizes the unmistakable sound and feeling of college rock during a period where innocence, experimentation, and adventurousness freely collided before being co-opted and branded as "alt-rock." Document is the record to which everyone refers when citing R.E.M. as the premier example of how a respected band is expected to behave, evolve, and maintain its integrity after experiencing mass success.

Mastered from the original master tapes and carefully pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's numbered limited-edition 180g LP edition of this breakthrough set explodes with unrivaled instrumental signatures, deep soundstages, and faithful tonalities that allow listeners insight into the actual makes and models of the guitars utilized on the recording. Sharp and clean, Scott Litt's widescreen production throws the band into clear relief, magnifying its razor-edged melodies and drummer Bill Berry's foundation-establishing beats. R.E.M. has never sounded so muscular or righteous.

Indeed, the quartet plays as if on a mission, its electrified energy teeming with a contagious fervor that helps fuel political numbers such "Welcome to the Occupation," "Exhuming McCarthy," "Disturbance at the Heron House," and "King of Birds." R.E.M. comes into its own, peeling back the layers on vagueness and utilizing Michael Stipe's biting lyrics and Mike Mills' amped-up guitar riffs to punctuate its catchy fare. Aptly, songs dance around a central image of fire.

The group's hallmark jangle-pop motifs and swooning refrains remain, yet they exhibit a determined attitude and wily quality that brings everything up to another notch. Toss in surf-rock fills, feedback accents, deep-South rootsiness, and subversive undertones, and Document stands as near-flawless statement: A reaction to the social and material currency of its era, a call-to-arms to overcome trauma via hope, humor, and justified anger.

All these characteristics bleed into the manic anthem "It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)," a renegade shot of beat poetry, delirious delivery, punk-infused vitality, and bounce-around-the-room chaotic abandon that never grows stale. Is R.E.M. serious or joking? Or both? Part of the genius is that it's still impossible to tell. R.E.M. delights in taking listeners for a ride on Document, the swerving, drifting, stylistic interplay, and brief detours all of a whole, the group relishing in the fun of going for broke and succeeding at all of its goals.

We don't need to go on about R.E.M.'s standing as a group that's influenced countless artists and inspired millions of listeners. If you own just one of the quartet's albums, it should be Document.

    Murmur

Ranked 197/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

R.E.M. developed a strangely subdued variation of their trademark sound for their full-length debut album, Murmur by de-emphasizing the backbeat and accentuating the ambience of the guitars. Even though it's firmly rooted in the tradition of American folk-rock, post-punk, and garage rock, Murmur sounds eerily timeless, as if it appeared out of nowhere. Part of the distinctiveness lies in the atmospheric production, which exudes a detached sense of mystery, but it also comes from the remarkably accomplished songwriting. R.E.M. went on to produce a few albums that may have been on par with Murmur, but they never made anything that sounded quite like it. Reissued here on audiophile quality 180g vinyl with original packaging.

Remastered Vinyl Versions Of The Original Album And The Demos

Includes Extensive Liner Notes By Annie Zaleski Featuring Interviews From All Four Band Members And Producers Scott Litt And John Keane

A quarter of a century after 'Out Of Time' helped break alternative music into the American mainstream and turned R.E.M. into a worldwide phenomenon, the band have announced a special 25th Anniversary Edition, out via Concord Bicycle.

'Out Of Time' will be released in a 3 LP Set which will include remastered vinyl versions of the original album alongside demo versions of every album track, as well as demos for two non-album b-sides and a previously unreleased song. The release also contains extensive liner notes by Annie Zaleski featuring interviews from all four band members and producers Scott Litt and John Keane.

The demos, recorded at John Keane Studio in early 1990 and featured on all versions of the 'Out Of Time' reissue, provide key insight into the band's creative process: from early instrumental passes to versions of Losing My Religion and Texarkana with different lyrics, and even a version of Radio Song that features a rare moment with drummer Bill Berry on lead vocals for a verse. While recording them, it was clear to Keane that R.E.M. were at their peak in terms of creativity."

By 1991, R.E.M. (Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Michael Stipe) had amassed a sizable following in the United States, but 'Out Of Time' brought the Athens, GA band unprecedented global recognition. It was the group's first album to top both US and UK charts, selling 12 million copies worldwide, and garnered 7 Grammy nominations, including wins for Best Alternative Music Album, Best Short Form Music Video (Losing My Religion"), and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal (Losing My Religion").

Instant classic songs like Losing My Religion," Shiny Happy People," Near Wild Heaven," and Radio Song" broke new ground, artistically and commercially. Reviewing 'Out Of Time,' Rolling Stone simply said, This may well be America's best rock & roll band." Earlier this year, Pitchfork called the album arguably their most important record," while Time Magazine named 'Out Of Time' one of it's All-Time 100 Albums, saying it contains ethereal beauty rarely heard on a rock record."

    MTV Unplugged, 1991

R.E.M. Unplugged, 1991 shares the band's set for MTV's MTV Unplugged acoustic performance. The release draws largely from 1991's Out of Time and five albums in total, as well as a cover of the Troggs' Love Is All Around.

R.E.M. mark the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock. When their first single, Radio Free Europe, was released in 1981, it sparked a back-to-the-garage movement in the American underground. While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early '80s, R.E.M. brought guitar pop back into the underground lexicon. Combining ringing guitar hooks with mumbled, cryptic lyrics and a D.I.Y. aesthetic borrowed from post-punk, the band simultaneously sounded traditional and modern. Throughout the '80s, they worked relentlessly, releasing records every year and touring constantly, playing both theaters and backwoods dives. Along the way, they inspired countless bands, from the legions of jangle pop groups in the mid-'80s to scores of alternative pop groups in the '90s, who admired their slow climb to stardom.

    Radio City

Ranked 403/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Although the original members of the Memphis quartet Big Star recorded only the album, #1 Record together and were dissolving rapidly by the time the second, Radio City, was completed, those records have influenced countless 80s and 90s rockers on both sides of the Atlantic, from the Replacements and R.E.M. to Englands Primal Scream and Scotlands Teenage Fanclub. That Big Stars impact should extend so far afield is less surprising in light of the bands own inspirations. Taking the gritty soul of Memphis rhythm and blues and fusing it with the artful melodies and vocal harmonies of British power pop, and injecting it all with a flailing, pre-punk, garage-band energy, Big Star created a unique sound with a universal appeal.

Much of the tension that fueled Big Star's wonderful harmonies apparently came from the undercurrents of competition instilled by the medias perception of Alex Chilton as the leader of the band, one which Chris Bell once steered. Near Christmas of 1972, Bell left the band. Chilton, Hummel and Stephens continued as a trio, but Big Star was clearly on the rocks. They pulled themselves together enough, however, to record 1973's Radio City, which has been called one of rocks most seminal albums, and while Bell was not a formal participant, his lingering spirit is evident in several of the albums 12 tracks.

Homebrew is the second studio album by Neneh Cherry. The album features several different genres, including between Jazz, Funk and Trip Hop. Hip Hop legends Gang Starr co-wrote and produced Soul Sassy and I Ain't Gone Under Yet. Geoff Barrow wrote and produced Somedays.

Trout features a guitar riff sampled from Steppenwolf's version of The Pusher, and the drum track by John Bonham from When The Levee Breaks.Buddy X was allegedly inspired by Lenny Kravitz. It was remixed by Notorious B.I.G and the Dream Team. The track Move With Me later appeared on the soundtrack of the 1993 film Sliver.

Everything on this record is a gem. Cherry triumphs with a seamless and unorthodox blend of Hip Hop, R&B, Dance music, and Pop, and on Money Love and Trout, the presence of R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe brings Rock to the eclectic mix.

    Blackberry Light

Charlie Mars has been a journeyman artist with all the ups and downs that entails. He has gone from uncertainty to redemption with major label releases and high profile gigs opening for the likes of R.E.M., KT Turnstall, Citizen Cope and Steve Earle, among others. Now, with the extraordinary new Blackberry Light, the Mississippi-based troubadour builds his distinctive musical approach employing supple grooves and ambient Daniel Lanois-inspired production to enhance the elemental force of his classic songwriting influenced by Bob Marley, Bill Withers and Dire Straits.

From the dreamlike Nothing But The Rain, to the shimmering Picture of An Island, Blackberry Light sees Mars delving deep within to offer insight and a path to self awareness and ultimately transcendence via a gracefully beatific distillation of folk, rock, and smooth acoustic soul. Mars took a modest tack towards overall recording of Blackberry Light, which took place at Austin's Treefort Studios under production prowess of Billy Harvey (Bob Schneider), looking to capture those perfect uncalculated moments where everything just clicks.

Upon the sessions' conclusion, Mars sought out one of his dream collaborators legendary producer/engineer/mixer Tchad Blake. The Grammy-award winner, known for his distinctive work with such artists as Elvis Costello, Richard Thompson and Sheryl Crow, ultimately agreed and helped give Blackberry Light much of its uniquely spacious warmth. Like any songwriter worth his salt, Mars employs his art as a channel towards personal discovery, candidly exploring all the human limitations, from pride and fear to cynicism and self-doubt, that stand in the way of his attaining true happiness. 180g gatefold vinyl.

    The Bends

Ranked 110/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Pablo Honey in no way was adequate preparation for its epic, sprawling follow-up, The Bends. Building from the sweeping, three-guitar attack that punctuated the best moments of Pablo Honey, Radiohead create a grand and forceful sound that nevertheless resonates with anguish and despair -- it's cerebral anthemic rock. Occasionally, the album displays its influences, whether it's U2, Pink Floyd, R.E.M., or the Pixies, but Radiohead turn clichÉs inside out, making each song sound bracingly fresh. Thom Yorke's tortured lyrics give the album a melancholy undercurrent, as does the surging, textured music. But what makes The Bends so remarkable is that it marries such ambitious, and often challenging, instrumental soundscapes to songs that are at their cores hauntingly melodic and accessible. It makes the record compelling upon first listen, but it reveals new details with each listen, and soon it becomes apparent that with The Bends, Radiohead have reinvented anthemic rock.

Volume 1: Frozen Ropes and Dying Quails (Awaiting Repress)

Rock n' roll vets Scott McCaughey (The Minus 5, R.E.M., Young Fresh Fellows) and Steve Wynn (The Dream Syndicate, Gutterball, Danny & Dusty, Miracle 3) have an unhealthy love for music undermined only by an even more unhealthy love of baseball. The compatriots blend their two passions with The Baseball Project Volume 1: Frozen Ropes and Dying Quails, an album of buzzing guitars and baseball back stories.

The heroes and villains of America's (in)famous pastime are explored with cutting wit and fanboy detail in songs that satisfy both the summer's need for rock anthems and sweltering afternoon double-headers. Drummer Linda Pitmon (Miracle 3, Golden Smog) and R.E.M.'s Peter Buck round out the squad, as they spin tales of ill-fated drinking binges (The Yankee Flipper, The Death of Big Ed Delahanty), near mythical icons (Ted Fucking Williams), folk heroes (Fernando, Satchel Paige Said) and on Gratitude (For Curt Flood), the overlooked man who changed the game.

A passionately funny and sarcastically reverent commentary on the state of the sport, The Baseball Project provides a hip soundtrack to the backstage party at America's game

    Fuzzy

"The best album of the year hands down" (R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe, 1993)

Grant Lee Buffalo is an Americana/indie Rock band based in Los Angeles, consisting of Grant Lee Phillips (vocals and guitar), Paul Kimble (bass) and Joey Peters (drums). All three were previously members of another Los Angeles band, Shiva Burlesque. They toured with major bands, including R.E.M., Pearl Jam, the Smashing Pumpkins and The Cranberries.

Their 1993 debut Fuzzy was a condent and solidly crafted piece of work, with Phillips' marvelous voice, ne and evocative songs. Fuzzy is deep and mysterious stuff, but also very beautiful and crafted with imagination and care. It's no wonder Grant Lee Buffalo became critic's darlings shortly after this was released. Original vinyl copies are in short supply, making this rst reissue ever a very welcome one!
