    Message From A Drum

See The Light is the debut album by The Jeff Healey Band, released in 1988. See The Light may be similar to Stevie Ray Vaughan's high-octane Blues-Rock, but in blues and blues-rock, it's often the little things that count, such as guitar styles, and there's no denying that Healey has a distinctive style.

Healey plays his Stratocaster flat on his lap, allowing him to perform unusual long stretches that give his music real heart and unpredictability. Throughout the album, his guitar work keeps things interesting, even on slow ballads like Angel Eyes (one of two John Hiatt songs, by the way, along with the ripping Confidence Man).

That's what keeps See the Light interesting, and it's what makes it an intriguing, promising debut. It made the top 100 Albums in Canada in 1989, and was nominated for an Album of the Year Juno Award a year later.

    On The Track

ON THE TRACK is among the most remarkable debut albums of 1975 or any other year, a reverent and remarkably authentic revival of late 19th century and early 20th century popular music, spanning Roaring Twenties radio ditties, Depression-era ragtime, the folk-jazz of World War II, and still-sung favorites by songwriters like Irving Berlin, Hoagy Carmichael & Johnny Mercer, Fats Waller, Al Dubin & Harry Warren, Lonnie Johnson, and Jimmie Rodgers. The album - which sees Redbone accompanied by such studio luminaries as drummer Steve Gadd, percussionist Ralph MacDonald, and the great double bassist Milt Hinton - was an across-the-board success, reaching #83 on Billboard's overall Top LPs & Tape chart amidst widespread critical acclaim. TMR's exclusive vinyl reissue of ON THE TRACK comes in a 12 single pocket, direct-to-board replica of the original Warner Bros. Records release, with classic cover art featuring a Chuck Jones illustration of Merrie Melodies star Michigan J. Frog.

Leon Redbone - who only recently retired from active recording and live performance - is a true original, a one of a kind singer, songwriter, and guitarist whose imitable interpretations of turn of the 20th century music have affirmed him as both Invaluable curator and resounding pop pioneer. Redbone began performing in Toronto more than four decades ago, earning the approval of such notables as Bob Dylan, The Lovin' Spoonful's John Sebastian, and famed producer John Hammond. Immediately iconic in his trademark Panama hat and dark sunglasses, Redbone proved an exceptional star, known far and wide via laconic performances on Saturday Night Live, The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, and A Prairie Home Companion. His remarkable work in the years since encompass a stunning range of creative output - 13 studio albums, sold out live performances around the globe, multiple TV themes, countless commercials, voiceovers, and a memorable duet with Zooey Deschanel of Baby, It's Cold Outside featured in the 2003 holiday blockbuster, Elf. Throughout, Redbone's greatest contribution has been his undying championship of America's musical heritage, his singular talent introducing generation after generation to a still potent folk tradition.

    Champagne Charlie (Pre-Order)

Blending ragtime blues, honky tonk harmonies, vaudevillian echoes and a musical persona entirely his own, Leon Redbone's 1978 release Champagne Charlie is a tour de force from one of the most mercurial, magical and talented artists in modern music.

One of the distinguishing factors on the record is the fine choice of material, which ranges from Jelly Roll Morton to Jimmie Rogers. As usual with Redbone, the fare is lighthearted and tinged with nostalgia, and sweetened by antique arrangements. The band is delightful, filled with jubilant horns, oboes, and trumpets and, of course, Redbone's rich baritone and throwback acoustic guitar shine.

The album, produced by Joel Dorn, is filled with the best that Dixie, Delta blues and ragtime jazz has to offer keeping true to the old style that made these songs so popular to begin with. Leon has a sort of irreverent, off beat approach to these old jazz classics that is just plain fun to listen to. A charming and romantic introspective collection of classic blues and jazz melodies... each performance is an irresistible listen...his style is unmatched.

    Long Way From Home

Third Man Records is proud to announce the forthcoming releases of Leon Redbone's Long Way From Home, the never-before-released earliest known recordings of the mysterious performer. Redbone's career has spanned over four decades and began with his earliest performances on the folk festival and club circuit. His numerous appearances on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and Saturday Night Live and other outlets catalyzed his rise to international recognition. Over the ensuing years he has appeared throughout North America, Europe, Australia and Japan and released thirteen albums of his unique music, a panoply of early music styles that he delivered with his singular laconic idiosyncratic style. A true champion of early American ragtime, blues and jazz, Leon Redbone has spent a lifetime preserving that musical tradition while exposing successive generations to a rich musical heritage of which they might not otherwise have become aware. Recorded in 1972 by Dave Benders for WBFO Radio at the University of Buffalo, Long Way From Home features some of the first Leon Redbone recordings. Long Way From Home was never released commercially and is finally available in a double-LP package for all to enjoy.

    Awaken, My Love! (Pre-Order)

Awaken, My Love! is a bold departure from the hip-hop sound of his previous work, and finds the Atlanta star evolving into full-on funk and R&B mode. Donald Glover and longtime collaborator Ludwig Goransson channel the spirit of Parliament Funkadelic with a potent psychedelic funk vibe that permeates through the entire album. Some Cold Rainy Day

Eden & John's East River String Band are a contemporary acoustic duo that play country/blues classics from the 1920s and 1930s. The band consists of Eden Brower on ukulele and vocals with John Heneghan on guitar and vocals, including special guest Terry Waldo (legendary ragtime piano player who has recorded and toured with Leon Redbone and Woody Allen).

The duo try to keep alive the rural music tradition that existed before the Great Depression of the '30s, playing primarily country blues covers including classics by such greats as Skip James, Mississippi John Hurt, Lottie Kimbrough and Blind Lemon Jefferson.

Some Cold Rainy Day is by far one of the most enjoyable contemporary recordings of early pre-war blues music I have ever heard. Eden and John stay true to the original arrangements and vocals that these songs had when they were first released. I would call this a MUST-own for fans young and old of blues music and even those who want a modern introduction to the great old music of the 1920s and 1930s. PLEASE NOTE: Crumb not only did the cover for this album; he loves the music on it, too. Crumb collectors know that he does very little commercial work now with his busy schedule and will only illustrate items he himself loves. What better endorsement is there than that? - Ralph Deluca

    Self Portrait

One of the most controversial albums in Bob Dylan's remarkable catalog, the 1970 double-LP Self Portrait continues to exercise considerable fascination amongst Dylan devotees. Released on the heels of the artist's game changing Nashville Skyline, Self Portrait offered a quirky assortment of studio and live tracks, encompassing Dylan originals as well as covers of familiar pop and folk numbers, recorded with an all-star musical cast.

At the time of its original release, the sprawling, unconventional Self Portrait generated an immense amount of discussion and disagreement amonst Dylan admirers. The ongoing controversy surrounding the album has been fueled over the years by Dylan himself. At various times, Dylan has defended Self Portrait as a heartfelt artistic statement, dismissed it as a joke and described it as a concerted effort to escape the pressures of his unwanted status as the voice of a generation. Whatever the artist's actual intentions, Self Portrait retains a unique niche in the hearts of Dylan fans, and is often cited as an early landmark in the birth of alternative country.

Self Portrait's highlights include the Dylan originals Wigwam, later featured in the Wes Anderson film The Royal Tenenbaums; Living the Blues, subsequently covered by artists ranging from Leon Redbone to Antony Hegarty; and The Mighty Quinn, which Manfred Mann had turned into a British Invasion hit in 1968. The latter song is one of a quartet of live tracks drawn from Dylan's legendary performances with The Band at the historic Isle of Wight festival, along with memorable versions of the Dylan standards Like a Rolling Stone, Minstrel Boy and She Belongs to Me. Also featured are Dylan's readings of a variety of outside material, ranging from his iconic interpretation of the rural folk song Copper Kettle to his distinctive takes on such familiar tunes as Paul Simon's The Boxer, Gordon Lightfoot's Early Mornin' Rain and the vintage Every Brothers hits Let It Be Me and Take a Message to Mary.

Sundazed has restored this one-of-a-kind release to its original double-LP format. Mastered from the original analog master tapes, the album is pressed on high-quality, high-definition vinyl, with meticulously reproduced original gatefold cover art.
