    Freddie Hubbard entered Creed Taylor's studio for the
    third time in 1971 with the express purpose of making
    a record radically different from anything he'd cut
    before; he was looking for it to use electricity and to be
    out of the soul-jazz mold, but was also more ambitious
    and wanted to push that envelope and himself. Taylor
    and Hubbard assembled a band that included Herbie
    Hancock , Eric Gale, George Benson, Ron Carter,
    Jack DeJohnette, Airto Moreira, and Richard Wyands.
    The album is part of a loose trilogy including his two
    previous records, Red Clay and Straight Life. Now
    available in its essential form, First Light was mastered
    from original analog tapes and pressed on 180gram

    Trying To Live My Life Without You

    Otis Clay is one of the premier deep soul and gospel singers working today. His raw, fiery vocals drive an energetic and danceable blend of soul, r&b and blues in the tradition of such deep soul singers as Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett and Solomon Burke.


    A master showman, Otis Clay stays in demand for festival and concert appearances in the U.S., Europe and Japan. Noteworthy recent appearances include headlining The 2006 Japan Blues and Soul Festival Tour, headlining the opening night and being Honorary President of The 2006 Blues Passions Festival in Cognac, France a special guest appearance at The Chicago Emmy Awards in Nov., 2006 and the 2007 Chicago Gospel Music Festival.


    Born in Waxhaw, Mississippi, Clay began his career in gospel singing with groups such as The Pilgrim Harmonizers, The Gospel Songbirds and the legendary Sensational Nightingales. His recording of When The Gates Swing Open was a hit in the mid-80's and is included on The Gospel Truth cd released on Blind Pig Records. Both When The Gates Swing Open and The Gospel Truth remain staples on gospel radio today. As a singer and producer, Otis Clay remains very active in gospel. Walk A Mile In My Shoes, a new cd featuring Otis' version of this classic song has been released on his own Echo Records label.


    Clay launched and established his career as a deep soul singer with his first recordings made in the mid-60s for George Leaner's One-derful label in Chicago. A series of hit singles including Trying To Live My Life Without You produced by Willie Mitchell in Memphis for Hi Records followed in the '70's. Otis has also recorded for the Cotillion, Kayvette, Elka and Rounder labels as well as his own Echo Records. The intensity and passion of his live shows are captured on Soul Man: Live in Japan (Rounder) and Respect Yourself (Blind Pig) recorded live at The Lucerne Blues Festival in Switzerland.


    A long time resident of Chicago's West Side, Otis Clay is actively involved as a board member of People For New Direction, a community-based non-profit creating economic initiatives to address a number of issues on the West Side. People For New Direction consists of West Side businessmen and women, doctors, ministers and others who believe strongly in giving something back to the community where they live and work.


    As Chairman of The Board of the non-profit Tobacco Road, Inc. (TRI, Inc.), Otis was heavily involved in the extensive planning, fundraising and development of The Harold Washington Cultural Center at 47th and King Drive which has served as the cornerstone for the revitalization and redevelopment of the historic Bronzeville neighborhood. The Cultural Center, which includes the state-of-the-art 1,000 seat Com-Ed Performing Arts Theatre, is built on the former site of The Regal Theatre, the legendary venue for national and Chicago-based r&b/soul, blues, jazz and comedy stars.


    Whether bringing audiences around the globe to their feet with his fiery brand of soul and gospel or working tirelessly with community and church leaders to provide better economic and cultural opportunities for West and South Side Chicago residents, Otis Clay has proven himself to be a national treasure.

    Recorded between trumpeter Freddie Hubbard's better-known classics Red Clay and First Light, Straight Life is actually arguably Hubbard's greatest recording. Hubbard, joined by an all-star group that includes tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, keyboardist Herbie Hancock, guitarist George Benson, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Jack DeJohnette, is frequently astounding on Straight Life (check out that introduction) and Mr. Clean, constructing classic solos. The very memorable set is rounded off by the trumpeter's duet with Benson on a lyrical version of the ballad Here's That Rainy Day. This exciting album is essential for all serious jazz collections.

    About Pure Pleasure



    At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Billy Martin's Amulet Records have announced the release of The Invention of Animals by The John Lurie National Orchestra. The archival compilation assembles seven previously unreleased live and out-of-print studio recordings by the acclaimed musician, actor and visual artist John Lurie leading his early 1990s' trio with percussionists Billy Martin and G. Calvin Weston.


    The three of us got together to try and write stuff for my band The Lounge Lizards, but what happened between the three of us was magical. After about a year of playing live it really came together, says John Lurie. There is something so unique and beautiful about this music. I don't think there is anything else like it.


    Billy Martin adds: John and I share the idea that this is like someone discovered a field recording of a lost civilization. Some strange and beautiful tribe unlike any other known to man.


    The Invention of Animals opens with Flutter, one of four National Orchestra performances culled from the soundtrack of John Lurie's 1991 television series, Fishing With John. Also drawn from that same soundtrack are The Beast, Little and Ignore The Giant. The additional studio recording included here is the title track to the only official John Lurie National Orchestra album Men With Sticks released in 1993. Rounding out the collection are two previously unreleased live recordings. I Came To Visit Here For Awhile was preserved at the Threadwaxing Space in New York City on May 7, 1993. The album's centerpiece and title track, The Invention of Animals, running at 19-minutes-plus, was captured by highly regarded sound engineer Claudia Engelhart from a performance on February 12, 1994 in Thessaloniki, Greece.


    John Lurie first became known for his work in the late '70s leading the band The Lounge Lizards, which went on to make music for 20 years. During this time, Lurie recorded 22 albums and composed scores for over 20 movies, including Stranger than Paradise, Down by Law, Mystery Train, Clay Pigeons, Animal Factory and Get Shorty, which earned him a Grammy nomination. Lurie also starred in three films directed by Jim Jarmusch, as well as a host of other films. He wrote, directed and starred in the aforementioned cult classic Fishing with John, a series that is now part of The Criterion Collection. Lurie is also responsible for the incredible music of Marvin Pontiac. Lurie emerged onto the art scene in the spring of 2004, when he had his first painting exhibition at Anton Kern Gallery. Since then Lurie's work has been exhibited in esteemed galleries throughout the world. His solo museum exhibits include P.S.1. Contemporary Arts Center in New York, Musee Des Beaux-Arts De Montreal, the Musee d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean in Luxembourg and the Watari Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, who gave their entire museum over to the presentation of Lurie's work. Both the Wadsorth Athenaeum in Connecticut and The Museum of Modern Art in New York have acquired his work for their permanent collections.

    The release of the debut album by Muddy Magnolias, Broken People, marks the launch of a great new vessel onto that waterway. The album showcases a confluence of style and sound as colorful as it is unlikely, steeped in that river of influence, yet bracingly fresh.


    With Broken People, Jessy Wilson and Kallie North take us on an 11-song journey with its origins in two widely divergent backgrounds that came together in a friendship and creative partnership with world-changing resonance.


    North was raised in southeast Texas and began singing with her family and studying piano at an early age. She grew to love rich vocal harmonies singing in church choirs and listening to artists like the Carpenters, Alison Krauss, James Taylor and the Eagles. By her early teens, she was singing lead parts in church and in musical theater productions at her high school. Her palette grew when a friend turned her on to the Grateful Dead, and after high school she spent every spare moment in the clubs of Austin, absorbing everything from alt-country and jam bands to New Orleans funk. She met her husband at a concert and moved with him to his native Mississippi. There, on their isolated farm, she had her awakening, starting a career as a photographer, capturing the spirited, deep history of the Mississippi Delta.


    "To me, the Delta is the most overlooked and mysterious place," she says. "It was the birthplace of America's music, and all the legends were influenced by everything that came out of it. I went on this personal exploration to learn about the Delta blues and the region's history. I picked up a camera and started taking pictures, blogging about what I was experiencing, and I tapped into all the creative energy lying dormant inside me." When her husband gave her a guitar, she began spending her days on the porch of their farm learning how to connect her first chords. From there, the songs began pouring out and she knew she had to find a way to get to Nashville and write songs professionally.


    Wilson, raised in Brooklyn, was in love with music from her earliest days. She was singing before she could talk, and was 5 when her mother recognized her passion for music. "I would cry because I couldn't hit the high notes in Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey songs," she says. Influenced by greats from Aretha and Smokey Robinson to Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blige and The Notorious B.I.G., she began auditioning in the highly competitive New York entertainment scene and was working professionally in musical theater by the age of 10. Her mother took her to nightclubs where she experienced a variety of live performances. She attended New York's top performing arts schools, including La Guardia High School, the "Fame" school, where she discovered her love for gospel music and took part in the gospel chorus for four years. She worked at Cafe Wha? in Greenwich Village, making $500 a weekend while still in high school.


    She sang backup for Alicia Keys in her teens, then worked four years with John Legend, and through him with legends like will.i.am, Kanye West, Raphael Saadiq and Babyface. Legend mentored her in songwriting and recording before she began writing songs on her own for American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino and others. Inspired by her evolving love of songwriting, she too moved to Nashville, looking for a wider creative palette. There, while meeting with then-BMI executive Clay Bradley, her eye settled on a photograph of "a rundown juke joint piano" in his office.


    "I want to meet whoever took that photo," she said. The photographer was North-it had been taken during her creative awakening in Mississippi-and the subsequent meeting led quickly to collaboration and an epic friendship.


    "The first day we wrote together," says North, "there wasn't much thought that we were blending genres and worlds. That never came up. It was just natural. She had never written a country song and I was writing them every day. We sat down to write one but when we listened back it was a country R&B song. And we decided to become songwriting partners." Before long, they had their first cut as collaborators, and they were off and running.


    "The spirit of the Muddy Magnolias existed from the moment we met," says Wilson, "but we didn't know we were the Muddy Magnolias yet." North was toying with the idea of a solo career; Wilson had aspirations of making history as an African-American female songwriter in Nashville. Their new friendship was a game-changer.


    "We spent a whole year writing, trying to understand what our message was when we combined our stories," says Wilson. Then one day over afternoon wine at Burger Up, their favorite hangout in the 12 South section of Nashville, both admitted to be being at a crossroads. "The next thing you know," says North, "Jessy said, 'What if we made a record together?' It was like all of our dreams in one."


    "We went back to that same office on Music Row where I saw the photograph," says Wilson, "and sat down side by side in Clay's office and said, 'We've got something to tell you. We're going to make an album together.'" Bradley believed enough to sign on as their manager. They held three days of band auditions and found four best friends who had been playing together since college, primarily doing jazz. The fit was perfect, providing just the right sonic backdrop for their soulful approach and high-energy delivery.


    As they continued to write and perform, opening for the likes of The Zac Brown Band and Gary Clark, Jr., they put together a project that crosses genres effortlessly, showcasing two voices that soar together in a blending of cultures as electrifying as if Janis Joplin and Tina Turner, or Whitney Houston and Lee Ann Womack had joined forces.


    Broken People combines poetic imagery and vocal passion, with the musicianship and production of Motown or Muscle Shoals by way of the raw honesty of Sun Records. Of course it deals with love, longed for and unleashed, in songs like "I Need A Man," "Why Don't You Stay" and "Devil's Teeth," but the album soars as it reaches for bigger themes, dealing with the need for hope in "Take Me Home," for love on a societal scale in "Shine On" and "Brother What Happened," and hope for the future in "Got It Goin' On." With "Leave It To The Sky," the two, joined by John Legend on vocals and piano, make a powerful case for spiritual solutions, and few songs in the modern lexicon are as steeped in present-day reality as the gospel- and R&B-tinged title track.


    "Ultimately," says North, "this album is a result of an unlikely friendship and is a testament to what can happen when you diversify your relationships."


    "It's about getting out of your comfort zone and being rewarded with a great friendship," adds Wilson. "We've both felt the power of that."


    "Our path is so much better and our lives are so much richer because of it," says North, "and we want to bring people along on this journey."


    "We want to see what society would be like if we all reached out in ways we normally wouldn't," adds Wilson.


    And that is the magic and the message. The music of Muddy Magnolias, live and on record, comes from a place where the Mississippi meets the A-Train by way of Nashville. Whether yours is the back porch or the front stoop, Spanish moss or window box garden, dusty country lane or crowded subway car, rural honky-tonk or uptown club, this is music that beckons. Muddy Magnolias are collaboration without boundaries, musical healing in a landscape of the heart, and all of us who treasure creative energy, honest art and the possibilities of love and unity, are better for their arrival.

    The Cost Of Living

    For The Revelations, their latest offering, The Cost Of Living (Decision/Sony RED), is a labor of love years in the making. Since they first came on the scene in 2008 with their Deep Soul EP(Decision), Brooklyn, NY's The Revelations have represented a twenty-first-century take on classic soul-one which shows reverence for the masters, but with a uniquely modern sensibility-a sound The New York Times' Jon Pareles calls "revivalism without poses or quotation marks".


    On The Cost Of Living, Rell Gaddis assumes the lead vocal duties previously provided by Tre Williams. This is by no means Rell's debut with The Revelations, however. Rell has been part of the group's writing team from their onset, and performed with the band for years, even contributing lead vocals to "It's Too Late" from their 2009 album The Bleeding Edge (Decision). Since being signed to Jay-Z's Roc-a-fella Records back in 1997, Rell has had a prolific singing and writing career, creating his own records, as well as penning and lending vocals to songs featuring artists Usher (Rell wrote Usher's #1 RnB Hit Here I Stand), Jay-Z, Kanye West, Mary J Blige, and many more.


    This workman-like mentality is pervasive throughout the band as well. The Revelations feature Wes Mingus on guitar, Gintas Janusonis on drums, and newcomer Ben Zwerin on bass. Each accomplished performing and session musicians in their own right, The Revelations have combined to provide music for icons such as the Wu-Tang Clan and Lee "Scratch" Perry, as well as soul royalty Otis Clay, Willie Clayton, Benny Latimore, and Swamp Dogg.


    The distinctive blues/rock/soul sound of The Cost Of Living was recorded at soul mecca Royal Studios in Memphis, TN, produced by Bob Perry with Lawrence "Boo" Mitchell, as well as The Revelations themselves. For this project, the band is joined by Stax and Hi Records session legends Bobby Manuel (guitar), Lester Snell (keyboards), and Charles Hodges (organ). Lyrically, The Cost Of Living weaves tales of perseverance despite hardship. From the opening track, "Mama", about a single mother scrounging to raise her children, to the jaded optimism of "It's Ok", the pragmatism of "Money Makes The World Go 'Round", and the heart-broken disillusionment of the soul classic "Got To Use My Imagination", The Revelations continue their tradition of presenting blues topics with soul music's urgency.


    The Revelations' engaging and energetic live performances continue to win over audiences from Brooklyn to the Mississippi Delta to California and beyond, creating fans such as A-listers B.B. King, Bobby Womack and Stevie Wonder in the process. This is new, true soul music with a sharp, modern edge.

    Hi Records producer Willie Mitchell constructed his vaunted house rhythm section around three talented Hodges Brothers during the late-'60s: guitarist Mabon (nicknamed Teenie); bassist Leroy; and organist Charles. With drummer Howard Grimes (and on some of Al Green's sides, MG's trapsman Al Jackson Jr.) rounding out the lineup, this skintight Memphis quartet laid down surging, simmering grooves behind the entire Hi stable during the label's 1970's heyday: Green, Ann Peebles, Otis Clay, Syl Johnson, and Mitchell himself, to name but a few. Mitchell had patiently molded the unit since when the Hodges Brothers were just in their teens.


    As the succinctly named Hi Rhythm, they recorded the 1976 LP, On The Loose, and remained a cohesive unit well into the '90s, even providing luxurious backing on Johnson's wonderful 1994 comeback set for Delmark, Back in the Game. Meanwhile, as the Hodges Brothers, they released a 1994 record called Perfect Gentlemen on the tiny Velvet Recording of America logo that also featured a fourth brother Fred on keys and veteran soul singer Percy Wiggins on several tracks. Fat Possum now has the distinction of reissuing the Hi Rhythm's long out-of-print 1976 offering On The Loose here on vinyl once again!

    Long Out Of Print Debut Solo Album from One of Hi Records' Most Successful Staff Songwriters!


    Best-known as a staff songwriter under Willie Mitchell at Hi Records and as the husband of Hi star Ann Peebles, Don Bryant was also a fine, underappreciated singer in his own right. Bryant was born in Memphis on April 4, 1942; his father, Edward, sang with a gospel group called the Four Stars of Harmony, and Bryant himself began singing in church at age five. In 1955, he and four brothers formed their own gospel group, the Five Bryant Brothers, which soon switched to doo wop under the name the Quails.


    Not long after, Bryant joined several high school friends in another doo wop group, the Four Canes, who were named after their manager, local DJ D. Cane Cole. When the group split with Cole, Bryant changed their name to the Four Kings, and they caught the attention of trumpeter/bandleader Willie Mitchell, who began performing with them around the Memphis club scene. Through Mitchell, Bryant got his original composition "Is There Someone Else on Your Mind" recorded by the 5 Royales and made his first solo recording in 1964 with a cover of Chris Kenner's "I Like It Like That."


    Over the next five years, Bryant recorded several duets with Marion Brittnam and numerous cover songs, the latter of which constituted his first full-length LP, 1969's Precious Soul (issued on Hi). However, his behind-the-scenes career soon became more lucrative, specifically when Mitchell assigned him to work with new Hi signee Ann Peebles. No longer the label's focal point, Bryant resisted at first, but quickly discovered a creative and personal chemistry with Peebles that blossomed into a relationship in 1972 and marriage two years later.


    In the meantime, Bryant co-wrote a number of Peebles' signature songs, including "I Can't Stand the Rain" and "99 Pounds"; his success led to a staff songwriting position, where he penned material for other Hi stars like Al Green, Syl Johnson, O.V. Wright and Otis Clay.

    Consider this simple fact: Even the smallest flowers crack concrete. It's enough to make one wonder what might happen if the Earth were freed from humankind's influence and simply left to its own devices-to regenerate, blossom, and grow wild. What wonders might spring from its soil? Scientists speculate that it would take only a century or two to wipe away the plants, crops, and animal species so carefully fashioned by humankind's industrious hand. In a few thousand years, the world might look exactly as it did before humanity came along: a wilderness. Take, for instance, New York City, considered by many the greatest city on Earth. Without humankind's interference, the repeated thawing and freezing of spring and winter would, within a decade, shatter the city's cement skin, allowing water to seep deep into the fertile ground below. Cracks would widen, deepen, and provide the soil from which exotic plant species, such as New York's prolific Chinese ailanthus tree, would grow. Within as little as five years, ailanthus roots would heave up the sidewalks and course through the sewers, while native Virginia creeper and poison ivy would adorn the city's skyscrapers. Within two decades, the water-soaked steel columns that support the street above the city's vast subway tunnels would give way, quickly transforming Lexington Avenue into a mighty river. Coyotes would find shelter in Central Park, to be soon followed by deer, bears, and wolves. Large oak trees would cover the land, while hawks and falcons would soar through the skies.
