Cut From the Original Analog Masters and Pressed on 200g Vinyl at Quality Record Pressings

In the fall of 1980, the Grateful Dead purposefully played a series of shows at two venues, the Warfield Theater in San Francisco and Radio City Music Hall in New York City, that were considerably smaller than the stadiums and arenas they were, by that point, regularly selling out. They did so with the express interest of recording in an intimate space the opening portion of each show, a stripped-down acoustic set featuring Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir playing acoustic guitars, Brent Mydland playing piano, drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart playing reduced kits and bassist Phil Lesh turning his electric volume down considerably.

The group chose a set list of classic folk and country tunes mixed with their originals and Reckoning is a very obvious ode to the band's early 1960s origins of folk, bluegrass and country. These are the sounds from which this whole long, strange trip was born, and Garcia in particular shines radiantly here.

The sound, as with all records that are stripped to their bare essentials and rid of an overcrowded electric set, is right up there with the very best the Dead ever released. This is also the record for those on-the-fence fans that could do without the wandering-away-from-the-pocket sound that characterized much of the Dead's music. The songs here are tight and compact while still remaining dynamically delicate.

Inspired by the dynamics they had developed on the road, the band was determined to capture their on-stage energy and exhilarating live performances, along with their experimental studio ideas, on record. With the arena-ready Drive All Night, the swagger of White Fences and its epic title track, The Reckoning fulfills on the promise of the band's first three albums, offering a powerful and memorable sound that defines the band's ambitions clearly and makes NeedToBreathe one to keep an eye on.

    Reckoning

Whereas Murmur had been complex and painstakingly deliberate, the bands Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Michael Stipe, along with producers Mitch Easter and Don Dixon, saw Reckoning as a chance to turn up the volume, tear up the rule book, and capture instead R.E.M.s on-stage mojo. Features the chart hit So. Central Rain and the college radio anthems Pretty Persuasion, (Don't Go Back To) Rockville and Time After Time (Annelise). Reckon

Political. Personal. Poetic. Such is the new album Reckon from one of Canada's most renowned songwriters, Jason Collett. Recorded at Revolution Recording Studios in Toronto, the album was produced by Howie Beck and includes guest appearances by Afie Jurvanen (Bahamas), Basia Bulat, Kevin Drew and Zeus. An 11-song retrospective titled Essential Cuts will be released as a companion to Reckon as a digital download in the vinyl package. Chosen by Jason himself Essential Cuts represent the sense of community that he has always held in such high regard.

There is a poetic serendipity to the fact that Jason Collett started recording Reckon during the same month that Occupy Wall Street began. Not necessarily setting out to make a record with these overtones, his travels and political engagements lead to the subject matter being unavoidable. "The consistent thread throughout this record is loss," he explains. "The love songs are largely emotive reflections of the 'political' songs. All written through the distillation of events since the economic calamity of 2008 and it's insidiously long looming shadow. I've seen first hand the kind of devastation this crisis has wrecked upon much of the world I've toured these last few years. The shut-down-shops and foreclosed homes on the suburban fringes as I've made my way to and from cities I've played. This record is a personal reflection of the crisis we've all witnessed and read about every day in the paper. Calling it Reckon is an acknowledgement of loss ... lost jobs, lost homes, loss of faith in our political and financial institutions and in turn, loss of illusion."

The Essential Cuts album is more or less a family affair featuring everyone from Amy Millan (Stars), Zeus, Feist, Emily Haines (Metric), Bahamas and more as well as production from long time friends Andrew Cash and Howie Beck. Collett reflects, "With a little help from my friends indeed...There is a revolving door cast of characters that make this a sweet selection of the back catalogue. The myriad of producers and players that have graced these recordings are a testament to the blessed incestuousness of the musical family I'm lucky to be part of."

    33 1/3

In a span of less than two decades, Shemekia Copeland has evolved from teenage upstart to one of the most prominent voices in the blues. She's currently the most feted woman in the blues world and actually had a coronation where she was crowned and declared Queen of the Blues at the Chicago Blues Festival in 2011. Shemekia earned her crown with a series of high-quality recordings and an unrelenting tour schedule that has taken her to all corners of the globe. She's played all the major festivals and concert dates from Europe to Iraq to a memorable performance at the White House in front of an audience that included the President of the United States, sharing the bill with Buddy Guy, Mick Jagger, Jeff Beck, B.B. King and other greats.

Early in 2012, Shemekia participated in two tribute concerts celebrating recently departed great Hubert Sumlin and Robert Johnson s centennial, both at New York s Apollo Theater in Harlem, not far from the neighborhood where Shemekia spent her childhood. Those nights she was a featured attraction along with Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Derek Trucks, Elvis Costello and Taj Mahal. Clearly, she's risen to the top of the field and that reckoning is underscored with the album release of 33 1/3.

For Shemekia, it s all about ushering the blues an art form that stretches back to the early 1900's into a fast-paced new century and keeping the music true to its roots, making it relevant to a new generation. Her latest step in this ongoing journey is 33 1/3, an 11-song CD set culled from a variety of high-profile sources, including Bob Dylan, Sam Cooke, pater familias Johnny Clyde Copeland and Randy Weeks. Shemekia weaves it all together with assistance from a skilled studio crew: guitarist/producer Oliver Wood (Wood Brothers), bassist Ted Pecchio (Susan Tedeschi) and drummer Gary Hansen. Various guest musicians step in along the way, including the Buddy Guy.

Every one of these songs tells a story about where I am in my life, says Shemekia. They all connect to something that has happened to me, both good and bad. I've experienced a lot since I started making records and touring more than 15 years ago, and I think people want to tap into the wisdom that comes with that experience. I tried to bring a little bit of that to every one of these songs.

    Dolls of Highland

Kyle Craft grew up in a tiny Louisiana town on the
banks of the Mississippi, where he spent most of his
time catching alligators and rattlesnakes instead of
playing football or picking up the guitar. He's not the
product of a musical family, and bands never came
through town. It was only a chance trip to K-Mart that
gave him his first album, a David Bowie hits compilation
that helped inspire him eventually to channel his
innate feral energy into songwriting and rock and roll.
That self-made talent drives every note of Dolls of
Highland, Craft's exhilarating, fearless solo debut.
"This album is the dark corner of a bar," he says. "It's
that feeling at the end of the night when you're
    confronted with 'now what?'"

Craft knows the feeling well--Dolls began to take shape
when everything he took for granted was suddenly over,
including an eight-year relationship. "All of a sudden I
was left with just me for the first time in my adult
life," he says. He ventured far away from the ghosts of
his home in Shreveport, Louisiana to make a new life
for himself in Portland, Oregon, living under a friend's
pool table while he demoed new songs and tried to
    determine what came next.
The album was tracked at a home studio in Shreveport,
where Craft briefly returned for an intensely-productive
reckoning with his past. "I dedicated the album to
Shreveport and called it Dolls of Highland for all the
girls and ghosts in town who influenced it so strongly."
Craft then returned to Portland, where Brandon
Summers and Benjamin Weikel of The Helio Sequence
helped move the album from its DIY beginnings to a
more fully realized work. Craft played most of the
instruments on the album, and the record captures the
    power of his live performance.

    And then there's Craft's unforgettable voice - "I'm
fully aware that I have a very abrasive, very loud voice,
but Bob Dylan is the one that taught me to embrace
that," says Craft. Craft's talent and singular creativity
move the conversation into new and unpredictable
places. And this album is very much about moving
forward. "After everything fell apart, it didn't take very
long for me to learn who I was and what I should be
doing," says Craft, who is walking out on the other side
    with Dolls of Highland.

    Travels

If you've ever desired a Pat Metheny Group greatest hits album, then Travels is for you. Compiled from the group's touring activities in 1982, this double set is a must-have. From the glittering lotus of melody that is "San Lorenzo" to the even more effusive "Phase Dance," the requisite classics are all here. We also get a curtailed, though no less epic, version of "As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls," which here draws out like a long cinematic fade and throws the windows open wide to the band's boggling sonic purview. And one can hardly help but swoon from the dizzying heights reached by this live version of "Are You Going With Me?" Here the studio version seems but a memory on the path to glory, and finds exuberant life in what is perhaps Metheny's best solo on record. An absolute affirmation.

Yet the album's true value comes in the handful of songs exclusive to it. Through these we encounter softer sides of the PMG, each burnished like a different shade of leather. "The Fields, The Sky" is an outstanding place to start. Vasconcelos's unmistakable berimbau threads a supremely melodious backdrop, while Metheny is at once distant and nearby, winding a slow and organic retrograde around the fiery center within. Vasconcelos is also the voice of "Goodbye," a forlorn piece of sonic stationery across which Metheny inscribes a most heartbreaking letter toward a ripple of an ending. This pairs nicely with the title track, a laid-back photograph of Americana that is like a rocking chair on the back porch: lulling, and affording an unobstructed vista.

Similar strains await us in "Farmer's Trust," a slow plunge into an ocean of undriven roads gilded by the whispering of baby birds and the rustling of the leaves that hide them, and in the smoothly paved blacktops of the synth-driven "Extradition" and "Song for Bilbao." Each of these creeps along like wispy clouds over badlands, spun by keyboardist Lyle Mays into sunset. But it isn't all drawl, as drummer Dan Gottlieb proves in the invigorating "Straight On Red," throughout which he provides the perfect springboard for the masterful dialogues of Metheny and Mays.

Travels is what the PMG are all about, and this album shows us the collective at its finest hour. Those hearing the PMG for the first time will want to start with the studio sessions, and especially Offramp, from which Travels was in part drawn. That way, one can appreciate the enthusiasm of the crowds, and get at least a taste of what it must have felt like to be there among them. With a depth and cleanliness of sound that no band can match, the PMG were a force to be reckoned with, but also one so welcoming that reckoning need never have applied. Theirs is a space where nature and nurture shared the same pair of lungs. - Tyran Grillo

    The Heart

After three albums fronting alternative rock band Ours and working with legendary producers Rick Rubin, Steve Lillywhite and Ethan Johns, Jimmy Gnecco has self-produced the most personal and affecting album of his career. Titled The Heart, it's a watershed collection which sees Jimmy drop his guard and raise the bar and the prevailing mood is one of beautiful melancholy. We all have to reckon with loss and the events that have shaped us sooner or later, and this record is Jimmy Gnecco's compelling attempt to do just that.

Playing guitar, bass, keyboards, drums on The Heart, Jimmy proves more than capable on these and other instruments throughout the album. But it's his adroit and soulful voice that takes center stage. The perfectly controlled falsetto on "Rest Your Soul" establishes a potent sense of intimacy that's sustained for the record's duration.

The pleasure is all ours in announcing a new Blue Series single from Charleston, SC's own Shovels & Rope. Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent are definitely our favorite inter-gender rock n roll two piece since... well, you know (somewhere Alison Mosshart yells ''WTF?!'')... and we're certainly excited to present this Blue Series single featuring two covers of real life titans of the biz. Side A gives us Shovels & Rope's piano heavy take on Bruce Springsteen's ''Johnny 99'' while the flip is a slinky hip shaking version of Tom Waits' ''Bad As Me''. This is the perfect soundtrack for two doomed souls dancing in the glow of a jukebox in a greasy spoon diner... We reckon Messrs Springsteen and Waits should be mighty proud.

1983's Show No Mercy was the album that started it all for the thrash mercanaries and the album ultimately helped inaugerate in the speed and thrash metal movement of the '80s and the extreme metal underground of the '90s. SHRAG are bringing analytical attitude to the debased trade of pop and serving it up with bulldozing portions of raw guitar noise Shrag have come a long way from their DIY roots to flourish into a proper indie pop band to be reckoned with.. With an exhilarating blend of dirty, distorted post-punk guitars, shouty boy/girl vocals and fantastic pop songs, Shrag bring us a distinctively British experience, drawing inspiration from the likes of The Au Pairs, B-52s and Prolapse. Headlining a bill that also featured Cippolina's new project, Copperhead, as well as the Sons Of Champlin, Quicksilver rip through a number of classics from their catalog. Though primarily Valenti's band towards the end, this live set features all of the original members and is a particularly rollicking live effort. Presented here in a deluxe clear vinyl addition with a bonus CD featuring extra tracks.

The Byrds were truly a gift to rock music fans all over the world. There will never be another

    Journeys To Glory

    180 Gram Vinyl

First Pressing Of 1000 Numbered Copies On Transparent Vinyl

Journeys To Glory is the first studio album by Spandau Ballet. When it was released in 1981, the album was considered fresh, bold, and even somewhat avant-garde. Many fans feel that the spare, drum-led, Funk-undertones are more original than the group's later Soul-influenced recordings.

Several of their New Romantic contemporaries (Ultravox, Duran Duran, Visage), were musically quite credible. Spandau Ballet proved at a very young age they were a force to be reckoned with. Songs like To Cut A Long Story Short and Musclebound are the album's highlights.

    Like An Ever Flowing Stream

Founded 1988 in Stockholm/Sweden, Dismember were among those responsible for Death Metal's big break through. The debut album, "Like An Ever Flowing Stream" from 1991, clearly showed that Dismember are an uncompromising band which resulted in their rise to cult status within a short period of time after the album took the scene by storm. Extensive touring with bands like Death, Morbid Angel and Cannibal Corpse showed that Dismember are a live force to be reckoned with and the number of fans grew steadily. Spurred on by success, it was easy to commence the songwriting for the next album. However, the band then released the 5-track EP, "Pieces", and went out on tour again instead with Napalm Death and Obituary. They played for thousands of fans throughout Europe thus reinforcing their status as one of the best live bands on earth.

    Ugly

Screaming Females' seven years as a band, four full-length albums and 700 globe-spanning live shows has made them difficult to miss. Through it all, the New Brunswick, New Jersey trio have continued to exude a frenetic energy which is built upon the zeitgeist of America's punk and indie underground yet has always remained forward-looking. Fittingly, for Screaming Females' 5th album Ugly, the band enlisted legendary recording engineer Steve Albini, famed for his unique ability to capture the ferociousness of a live performance while delivering gorgeous sonic clarity. The album's 14 tracks reaffirm the touchstones of the band; they can still shred and front-woman Marissa Paternoster can still unleash a powerful howl. But it doesn't end there. The album ushers in new explorations for the band, a truly remarkable feat considering their already prolific output. Ugly has the perfect combination of raw energy and honed musicianship that produces the type of rock & roll which is still a force to be reckoned with.
