    Classics

Classics remains resolutely instrumental, but the band has introduced a wealth of new sounds, from acoustic and slide guitar to sleigh bells and cello. Their vastly improved production and writing makes this record a refinement of their art. Ratatat lay squealing metal harmonies over choppy Neptunes-style dance thumps, then break into pastoral waves of keyboard tone, riding dub tempos and hip-hop struts. They're crotch-pumping arena pimps and introverted minimalists... - Blender. Stroud and Mast have come up with some catchy melodies over light, snappy bass lines in what sounds like something tailored for the headphones - Urb. The band has toured with Interpol, The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, The Stills, and Mouse On Mars.

    Magnifique

Following up on the experimental sounds of LP3 and LP4, Ratatat return to their core guitar-driven sound on Magnifique. Combining the bedrock beats and primordial riffs from their first two albums with the sonic experimentation and production prowess of LP3 and LP4, Mike and Evan arrived at a new plateau with Magnifique.

RATATAT recently returned to the stage for the first time in four years to complete a handful of sold-out shows in Tulsa, Denver, Salt Lake City and Las Vegas. RATATAT will also perform at Governor's Ball, Capital Hill Block Party and HARD SUMMER music festivals this summer.

    Ratatat

Recorded at Chateau Du Musique, Brooklyn, New York, between July 2001 and May 2003, Ratatat's self-titled debut further blurs the boundaries between electronic music and rock, mixing Evan Mast's fractured but propulsive beats and woozy analog synths with Mike Stroud's loud, yet somehow subtle, guitars. Available for the first time on vinyl.

    LP3

    Includes MP3 Coupon

LP3 is the third studio album from Ratatat and the follow-up to 2006's Classics. Whereas Classics took some time to record, LP3 came together over the course of just a few weeks in October and November of last year. The album was recorded at Old Soul, a private studio in Catskill, NY which lays claim to a wealth of keyboard instruments of which nearly all are featured on LP3. Mike Stroud's characteristic guitar style is still present on the record but there are an abundance of new textures, from wurlitzer and mellotron, to even live percussion rather than programmed. This vinyl version is housed in a gatefold sleeve and includes an MP3 coupon.

    LP4

Ratatat's new album LP4 is the next step forward on the work that Evan Mast and Mike Stroud began on LP3. It was conceived during the creative streak that began during the LP3 sessions at Old Soul studios, in rural Upstate New York. The period in between albums also saw Ratatat branch out into production with two tracks featured on Kid Cudi's debut album, including the single Pursuit of Happiness.

The band describe LP4 as a weirder album than LP3, with a much braver approach to the arrangements. There are more instruments featured on the record than ever before, and for the first time a full string section. The album also features a number of spoken word interludes, one taken from Werner Herzog's film Stroszeck in which the lead character Bruno S describes the keyboards he owns. The other samples are all courtesy of Linda Manz, the first taken from Terence Mallick's period drama Days Of Heaven. While trying to clear the sample, Evan unexpectedly ended up on the phone with Linda herself. The call resulted in a trip to Linda's house, where he recorded an interview with her, excerpts from which make up the remaining vocal samples.

    Eyelid Movies

Phantogram's music sounds like it's made by a band from the city. Electronic loops, hip-hop beats, shoegaze, soul, and pop each find its way into their songs. Unexpectedly, the band doesn't live and work in a major urban center, but rather calls the town of Saratoga Springs, NY home. Despite the cultural influence of local Skidmore College (where fellow beat-experimenters Ratatat formed) Saratoga isn't exactly teeming with fans of J. Dilla, My Bloody Valentine or Serge Gainsbourg. Using various samplers, tapes, records, synths, drums, and both percussive and stringed instruments, Josh Carter and Sarah Barthel, the duo that make up Phantogram have allowed their natural surroundings and metropolitan influences to mix, resulting in brilliant, unusual recordings that are beautiful yet hard, dreamlike yet substantial, danceable yet smart.

    Give You The Ghost

Poliça's debut album, Give You The Ghost, is 11 perfectly formed auto-tuned songs that re-shape the intersection of pop and digitised R&B. And for all Poliça's synthetic manipulation, Channy's soft vocals and Ryan's electronic soundscapes reveal a tender heart beneath, pulsating with life and raw emotion. Give You The Ghost opens with the attention grabbing sonic of first track 'Amongster', the two drummers immediately coming into full effect as it builds to a heady mass of beats, bass and Channy's wandering vocals. 'Violent Games' continues the heavy on the drums theme, with duelling beats that intensify to machine gun-like levels, led by Channy's urgent and cyclical vocals "Tremble at the taste of / Tremble at the taste of / Tremble at the taste of in his hands".

Born out of the break-up of a recent relationship, the majority of Give You The Ghost reflects the difficulty of facing up to your mistakes and making peace with them; an exorcism via exciting new musical possibilities. "The recurring theme of this record is 'what in the hell just happened and who in the hell am I anyways'" says Channy. This redemptive mood is key for the track 'Dark Star', released online late last year amidst a viral whirlwind. Backed by smooth brass breakdowns throughout and mid-tempo loping rhythms, it's typical of Poliça's often meditative content fused with the addictive refrain "Ain't a man who can pull me down from my Dark Star".

First sashaying single proper 'Lay Your Cards Out' and the dreamy 'Wandering Star' both feature Mike Noyce of Bon Iver on vocals and are equally as deliciously funk laden as they are hypnotic, with more ratatat drums from Ben Ivascu and Drew Christopherson, propelling the lush arrangements and slinky bass, provided by Chris Bierden.

Everyone loves a party, so most people love a party band. That's why SoCal's Blink-182 have enjoyed a relatively long life in the ephemeral world of punk rock: They know how to make being pissed off sound as inviting as the pop of a beer-can tab. Bassist-vocalist Mark Hoppus, guitarist-vocalist Tom Delonge and drummer Travis Barker have a swell time on their third album, singing about sexual frustration (Dumpweed), alienation (the power-pop-y All the Small Things) and the sucky, suicidal state of the world (the piano-laced Adam's Song). The minimalist rat-a-tat-tat rhythms never falter; the guitar boings up and down like a sonic Superball. It's all harmless but still gnarly enough to foment the kind of anti-everything rebellion that spawned rock & roll way back in the day. Sometimes feeling good doesn't demand more than a sense of collective ennui or a bouquet of clumsy words/A simple melody (Going Away to College). Blink-182 have the formula down, and for that, if nothing else, more power to 'em.
