    Get Ready

    Motown Records approached American R&B/rock band Rare Earth in the latter part of 1968 to sign a recording contract with the label. At first the group was reluctant because of the fact that other white artists/groups hadn't found success with the label because they were primarily geared for promotion and distribution in the black market only.


    It was when Motown decided they wanted to launch a new division of Motown to cater to more white artists and broader radio formats that Rare Earth relented. Motown didn't have a name for their new endeavor initially so the band jokingly suggested their namesake Rare Earth. Surprisingly, they agreed and the Rare Earth subsidiary was born.


    Rare Earth had been playing clubs for several years prior to signing with Motown, cutting their teeth on a lot of R&B music which was prevalent on the radio at the time. This is where the band developed their now famous version of the Smokey Robinson/Temptations song Get Ready. It started out as a 3-minute song until one member took a solo and then everyone wanted a solo so over time it evolved into a 21-minute long monster. It became the closing song each night and people liked it so much they would stay just to hear it.


    The band even featured the extended take of Get Ready on an entire side of this, their 1969 debut album of the same name for Motown. After initial slow sales, they decided to release the first three minutes of Get Ready as a single. Not only was it a huge hit, peaking at #4, it propelled the album, which also boasts the band's takes on the classics Tobacco Road and Feelin' Alright, into the Top 20!

    most popular albums in his ever enduring catalog in 1975, For Earth Below.


    This masterwork unites the guitar hero again with his powerful team
    of world class musicians, the late great James Dewar on simmering lead
    vocals & bass, and the powerful drum work of Bill Lordan. The brilliant guitar
    shredder and his amazing band truly throw down some of his classiest and
    hardest driving, best known repertoire for this Robin Trower and Procol

    The album begins with his hard rocker Shame The Devil. The tune finds
    Robin Trower blazing on some very solid power riffs making this the ultimate
    opening track for the listener.


    The soulful hypnotic blues of It's Only Money has the tremendous voicing
    of Robin's guitar with Bill Lordan's fine percussive elements and James'
    signature vocal work throughout, truly making this one of the finest songs in
    Trower's four decade career as a solo artist.


    Always an astute bluesman, Robin Trower's Confessin' Midnight retains
    a solid groove which allows the progressive guitarist to power away with
    some very intricate fret work, making this album the classic that it is.

    The Soft Machine

    The first two albums by England's legendary Soft Machine, originally released in 1968 and 1969, remain among the most innovative and influential releases of that musically fertile era. These seminal LPs offered a visionary psychedelic-progressive-jazz-rock mix that helped to make the Soft Machine one of Britain's first significant underground bands, as well as a key force in the birth of both progressive rock and jazz-rock.


    A product of the same fabled Canterbury scene that spawned such beloved cult acts as Caravan and Hatfield and the North, the Soft Machine was the rare art-rock combo whose members possessed the instrumental skills to execute their ambitious musical ideas, as well as a playful sense of humor that balanced the band's complex compositions and adventurous improvisations. By the time they began making albums, the Soft Machine was already a sensation in the budding U.K. rock underground, thanks to their now-legendary performances at such fabled London clubs as the UFO, the Speakeasy and Middle Earth, where they shared stages with the likes of Pink Floyd and Tomorrow.


    The Soft Machine, co-produced by Chas Chandler and Tom Wilson, announced the band's arrival on the international scene in fine style. With an unusual three-man lineup comprised of Kevin Ayers on bass and vocals, Robert Wyatt on drums and vocals, and Mike Ratledge on keyboards, the album was recorded in New York, while the band was touring North America with the Jimi Hendrix Experience. In contrast to the extended pieces that would later dominate the Soft Machine's repertoire, the album focuses on shorter, more concise songs that nonetheless provide plenty of room for the musicians to demonstrate their varied abilities.


    This landmark vinyl gem has been out of print for decades, but now it is back in this meticulously packaged Sundazed edition. Mastered from the original analog tapes and pressed on pristine high-definition vinyl, this lovingly restored vintage gem sounds as powerful and imaginative as ever.

    In 1973, the good folks at Windfall and Columbia Records compiled
    an amazing overview of Mountain's most memorable and fan driven
    favorites simply titled The Best Of Mountain. This collection featured the
    brilliant lead vocals and dangerous guitar work of Leslie West, the sorely
    missed bass guitar, lead vocals and production of Felix Pappalardi (Cream),
    the driving keyboards of Steve Knight and the heavy metal drums of Corky
    Laing.


    This mammoth collection had something for every one of its devoted
    fans as it culled tracks not only from the band's output on Windfall like their
    earth shattering smashes Mississippi Queen and Nantucket Sleighride, but
    it also included the rare LP edit version of Roll Over Beethoven. Therefore,
    a good majority of the hits and definitive Mountain tracks are included on
    this career overview of songs which will forever stand the test of heavy metal
    time.


    Their most familiar songs from Climbing!, Flowers Of Evil and
    Nantucket Sleighride are featured with hard rockers like Never In My Life,

    OK, so it's disco sound, but it's really good. Whoever says that today must have been pretty lively on their feet in the 70s and 80s and in the days of their youth they will definitely have noticed that the commercial fusion music they listened to on a Saturday night was buzzing with energy and excitement. Earth, Wind & Fire considered their amazing mix of Latin, Gospel, Soul, Funk and dynamic horn section as being of existential importance. This was the album that would either make or break the band: either they would establish themselves or they would sink into oblivion like so many other rhythm and blues acts.



    The basic recipe - finely chiselled Latin beat, meaty bass grooves and sizzling funky improvisations, spiced with the sound of exotic instruments - works perfectly. Furthermore, crowned with a beautifully airy falsetto and relaxed harmonious singing, the band created a big-band sound that the magazine Rolling Stone described as »innovative yet popular, precise yet sensual, calculated yet galvanizing«. Almost two decades later, and with more than three million albums sold in the USA alone, the editorial team voted the LP into their list of the '500 Greatest Albums of All Time'. And about time too! At last today's ravers and rappers also get the opportunity to experience the great rhythms to which their daddies danced.

    About Speakers Corner



    At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    This was Edwin Starr's last album for Motown, Two singles were released, Hell Up in Harlem, and Big Papa. Written by Freddie Perren, it has the same power, forcefulness, and drive of numbers that Norman Whitfield had produced for Rare Earth and the Temptations. The flips of both singles, Don't It Feel Good to Be Free and Like We Used to Do, are mellower than the push sides. The bone picker, however, is Easin' In, a great midtempo number with cool backing vocals, and a great reading from Starr.

    Rising out of the same Maryland/DC mean streets as fellow US doom pioneers Pentagram and The Obsessed, IRON MAN was formed in 1988 as a Black Sabbath tribute band by guitarist Alfred Morris III, whose musical career began in 1977 with mysterious proto-doom cult FORCE. Al's legendarily heavy, unearthly guitar tone was already much in evidence on FORCE's ultra-rare 1981 debut EP - and it has only deepened, hardened, improved and refined in the ensuing 32 years.


    Signed to the legendary underground doom label Hellhound Records, IRON MAN released the stellar 'Black Night' debut in 1993, followed by 'The Passage' in 1994, before line-up and label instability forced the band into a late 90s wilderness period. They re-emerged in 1999 with 'Generation Void', before another extended hiatus. This time it took a full ten years before Al reassembled the indestructible IRON MAN with yet another new line-up for the aptly-named return-to-form 'I Have Returned' on Shadow Kingdom.


    South of the Earth is, without question, Iron Mans strongest, heaviest release to date. The time has come for a wider audience to finally appreciate the grinding majesty of this true underground phenomena.

    Soundtrack to David Bowie's The Man Who Fell to Earth will finally be released. "Due to the recent discovery of lost master tapes," the score will be available 40 years after the film hit theaters.


    40 years ago, David Bowie starred in the sci-fi cult classic The Man Who Fell to Earth, which birthed one of his greatest personas: The Thin White Duke. In commemoration of its upcoming anniversary, the film will return to theaters. The film's soundtrack will be released commercially for the very first time in a deluxe box set edition.


    Bowie originally intended to handle the soundtrack himself, but director Nic Roeg ultimately decided to go in a different direction. Instead, the music was coordinated by The Mamas & the Papas' John Phillips, with contributions from Japanese percussionist-composer Stomu Yamash'ta and former Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor. Several of the songs Bowie wrote for The Man Who Fell to Earth - including "Subterraneans" - ended up on his 1977 album, Low.

    Strut & Art Yart present a new definitive collection of singles released by jazz maverick Sun Ra during his Earth years, spanning 1952 to 1991. Released prolifically during the 1950s and more sporadically thereafter, primarily on the Saturn label, the 45s offer one-off meteorites from Ra's prolific cosmic journey, tracing the development of his forward-thinking "Space-Bop" and his unique take on jazz and blues traditions which sounded unlike anything else from the period. As with his LPs, most 45s were only pressed in small runs and were sold at gigs and have since become extremely rare and sought after. Some have only been discovered in physical form in recent years; some were planned and penciled but allegedly never made it to vinyl and some appeared as one-off magazine singles and posthumous releases.


    This release features fully re-mastered tracks, rare photos, poster artwork, extensive sleeve notes by Francis Gooding, an interview with Saturn Records founder Alton Abraham by John Corbett and detailed track by track and session notes by Paul Griffiths.

    On their fourth album, A Crow Left of the Murder, Incubus got heavier, both musically and lyrically, which might have developed their music but it shrank their audience. It's hard not to see their 2006 follow-up, Light Grenades, as a reaction to this situation -- not that they shrink away from the progression of Crow, but they polish and streamline their innovations from that album, resulting in a record that's sharper, cleaner, and more immediate in every respect. This naturally means that Incubus doesn't sound as heavy as they did earlier in their career, but they're still pretty somber here; even when the rhythms crash and the guitars wail, this is serious music, but they have a lighter touch here than they did on Crow. They also have a greater mastery of mood, as well as a greater musical variety than they displayed on the outset of their career. Often, they use trippy, vaguely psychedelic soundscapes to set a tone that they later blast apart with tightly focused blasts of fury, such as the skittering Anna Molly or the intense two-minute ballast of the title track -- or even how the acoustic introspection of Earth to Bella is ripped apart by shards of noise, not unlike Radiohead's Creep. Radiohead comes to mind a few times on Light Grenades, largely in how Incubus uses echoed guitars on their expansive mood pieces, but more often they sound like a leaner, hungrier latter-day Pearl Jam in their sense of purpose and dedication to serious rock. Perhaps that's why Diamonds and Coal stands out so strongly in the latter half of the record: it's a tightly constructed pop song, their catchiest ever, that's unlike anything else on the record in its hookiness, which makes it all the more impressive. And instead of suggesting that the rest of the record is lacking in hooks, it actually points out how Incubus has grown: that they not only feel comfortable releasing a piece of alt-pop as catchy as this, but they don't emphasize it, they merely present it as another dimension to their sound, just like how the delicate acoustic-driven Paper Shoes also sounds unlike the rest of the album yet still fits comfortably into the record's tapestry. These moments of lightness illustrate the confidence Incubus now has and their increasing musical dexterity too. On Light Grenades, they are a tightly focused, purposeful band, shifting moods and textures at the drop of a dime, proving that they have become a rare thing: a modern heavy rock band that actually grows and improves with each album.

    The '60s revived the careers of many early bluesmen, but none so dramatically as that of Mississippi John Hurt. Hurt recorded a few brilliant sides in the '20s, then ostensibly disappeared off the face of the Earth until folk musician Tom Hoskins went looking for him in 1963. At the age of 70, Hurt began one of the greatest comebacks in music history. From his first '60s shows until his death in 1966, Hurt was a popular mainstay of the folk-music circuit. TODAY! demonstrates why the audiences loved him so. More a melodic songster than a traditional bluesman, Hurt has a great deal in common with '60s folk musicians - many of whom he inspired. Hurt's dexterous and beautiful finger-picking style provided aspiring folk performers with a template, as did his warm and gentle stage presence. All these elements are amply evident on TODAY!, on which Hurt turns in definitive performances of Pay Day, Louis Collins, Spike Driver's Blues, and Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor.     About Pure Pleasure



    At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Earth was not created in a day. And the same applies to Gustav Holst's interplanetary symphony which took him about three years to write. The composer employs a massive orchestra and rich orchestral colouring to portray each planet in his musical psychogram.



    Mars, the Bringer of War, rages with mechanical brutality, while Venus brings peace and an acceptance of life. Mercury, the Winged Messenger, darts here and there with quicksilver speed, while powerful and sovereign Jupiter brings jollity and reassurance. Saturn plods by with heavy tread, while Uranus with its contrasting changes in tempo remains enigmatic and extrovert. And because Pluto, the most distant planet had not yet been discovered, it is Neptune, the great unknown, which is lost in time and space in an endless ostinato of female voices.
    Zubin Mehta and the Los Angeles Philharmonic present this astronomical journey with precision and exhilaration, leaving neither time nor space for astrological speculation. As always, the excellent DECCA recording quality guarantees an unimpeded view of this musical galaxy.

    Mysterious Traveller (Speakers Corner)

    In Weather Report's fourth album the mysterious multi-instrumentalist Joe Zawinul travels once again through his virtually endless sound universe. And once again the question arises as to whether he will manage to leave his genetic fingerprint - without resorting to routine - on all the newly created sounds. The magic word here is naturalness, which makes its way safely and surely through the electronic backdrop.



    Nubian Sundance, performed with two drummers and a percussionist, twists and turns in an apparently disoriented, meditative fashion through a mix of sizzling sound and colours, leading up to the final live applause that brings this dance to a close and making it a real experience for all. Following the translucent, will-o'-the-wisp-like American Tango is Cucumber Slumber with its compact funky sound created by a cool mix of saxophone and the sucking sound of a synthesizer. The two protagonists Zawinul and Shorter seem to be on a par with one another in the dazzling title piece where the lyrical saxophone part is supported by thunderous piano chords. Warm, dreamy harmonies are heard for a short while, only to be hacked apart in Blackthorn Rose - this is no orbital music floating around in your head but sheer tension, which makes you clutch your seat until landing. Back on earth the mysterious traveller was received with open arms with the readers of Down Beat magazine voting the LP 'Album of the Year 1974'.

    Beethoven: Triple Concerto (Speakers Corner)

    Why does the piano part seem comparatively simple in contrast to the violin and cello parts, which make the highest demands on the instrumentalists? And why on earth do three musicians play in concert with an orchestra? As interesting as these questions are with regard to Beethoven's cryptic Triple Concerto, there is a multitude of ways to approach this exceptional work by the great symphonist. In the gallantry of the expression, and keeping in mind the demand for playable parts for his invited circle of musical connoisseurs, Beethoven developed his very own concertante tonal language. This language is brought to life by Rudolf Serkin (piano), Jaime Laredo (violin) and Leslie Parnas (cello) in that they enter continually newly arranged dialogues and thereby offer the listener a warm palette of colours and melodies.



    The orchestral antagonists - the Marlboro Festival Orchestra - weaves a chamber music-like, delicate and wonderfully transparent carpet of sound, upon which Beethoven's characteristic woodwind instruments are bedded like roses. Thanks to these attributes, this recording appears to take place in the luminous glow of a private house and thus conveys a charming yet stimulating atmosphere.

    Elvis' Christmas Album (Speakers Corner)

    Wild rock'n'roll and Christian spirituality at Christmastide are impossible to bring together musically, one might think. But Elvis, who in the Fifties was climbing as steadily up the ladder of success as Father Christmas coursed the sky in his sleigh, certainly pulled off this feat in his Christmas Album with its mixture of popular Christmas songs and seasonal evergreens. The 'King' delivers a rocking version of Santa Claus Is Back In Town just as successfully as Peace In The Valley, an inspirational gospel song praising nature. Of course it goes without saying that White Christmas - the most-recorded Christmas hit, which in the Bing Crosby version alone achieved sales of 35 million - is included on the album. And Elvis's sentimental interpretation of Silent Night may well have made its contribution to the immortality of the former truck driver from Tennessee.
