The Randy Newman Songbook (Box Set)

Nonesuch Records releases the four-LP, vinyl-only, limited-edition The Randy Newman Songbook box set in 2016. Nonesuch's Randy Newman Songbook series-comprising solo recordings of songs from throughout Randy Newman's five-decade career-previously included two volumes, released on CD in 2003 and 2011; the box set marks their first release on vinyl. Sixteen additional songs from a newly released third volume, along with five bonus tracks (Feels Like Home, A Wedding in Cherokee County, Family Album: Homage to Alfred, Emil and Lionel Newman, I'm Dreaming, and Wandering Boy), join those first two volumes in a new, thematic sequencing, to create this new complete Songbook box set. Mitchell Froom produced The Randy Newman Songbook, Vol. 1 and was joined on Vol. 2 and Vol. 3 by Newman's lifelong friend and colleague Lenny Waronker.

The New York Times said of the first volume of The Randy Newman Songbook: The great craftsmanship is more apparent in the stripped-down context, and the Associated Press said, Few singer-songwriters could inject more new life into solo piano versions of their work than Randy Newman. The UK's Uncut called Vol. 2 another subtly sublime stroll through the master's back catalogue, noting that Newman is owner of a peerless canon, and that the album isolates his full range of qualities: the improbable juxtapositions of caustic topicality and heart-wrenching universality, the concise character studies, and singing and piano playing that seem to emanate from the very fabric of America.

Nilsson Sings Newman (Speakers Corner) (Awaiting Repress)

When two talented, cussed men such as Harry Nilsson and Randy Newman get together to record an album, you can be sure of an exceptional record filled with great vocals and poetry. Nilsson, who is described as a man who performs his songs with one cynical, laughing eye and one nostalgic, tearful eye in Rowohlt's Rock-Lexikon, finds inspiration in the then relatively unknown Newman, a docile but caustic social critic who often attacked American society in his songs.

In the layers and harmonies achieved partly by overdubbing, and which alternate between cowshed, barbershop and the Beatles, Nilsson manages to make his bitter words somewhat easier to digest. He relates the bizarre chronicle of a couple who have a dull relationship and who morbidly look forward to passing away in an old people's home (Love Story), or he swears his undying love to a certain Caroline in springtime, or he is transported back in time in his mind's eye to an idyllic little town in the countryside (Dayton, Ohio 1903). A weighty musical background would lend nothing to these highly sophisticated songs. Piano chords, a little bit of electric harpsichord, and a tinkle on the organ keys here and there suffice to dally in an old-fashioned manner - with a sarcastic smile or even a nasty grin - in the desolation of reality, without getting the blues.

    Musicians:

    • Harry Nilsson (vocal, keyboards, percussion)

    • Randy Newman (piano)

Recording: August - October 1969 at RCA's Music Center of the World, Hollywood, by Grover Helsley

    Production: Harry Nilsson

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

1972's Life, Love and Faith was Allen Toussaint's first album for Warner Reprise. Randy Newman's Faust is a 1993 musical based the work on the classic story of Faust. Newman borrowed elements from the version by Goethe, as well as Milton's Paradise Lost, but updated the story to the modern day and infused it with humorous cynicism. In this retelling, God and the Devil ght for the soul of Henry Faust, a student at the University of Notre Dame. J.J. Cale: Rewind: The Unreleased Recordings

Time Life is very proud to present Rewind: Unreleased Recordings, a trove of previously unreleased songs recorded by American music icon J.J. Cale during his early and most influential years. Featuring vintage tracks from Cale's legendary tenures at Shelter Records and Mercury Records, Rewind is a remarkable collection that exemplifies J.J. Cale's distinctive, legendary style: laid-back guitar and almost whispered vocals with influences of rock 'n' roll, country, blues and jazz. Not only are Rewind's eight Cale-penned songs a time capsule of musical treasures, he also personally selected several covers to include. It's extremely rare for Cale to record another songwriter's material, making these songs particularly extraordinary. He puts his personal spin on Eric Clapton's Golden Ring, Leon Russell's My Cricket, Waylon Jennings' Waymore's Blues and Randy Newman's Rollin'.

Takes Place In Your Work Space

    White Colored Vinyl

When a band's first album is unpredictable enough to invoke comparisons with artists as wildly diverse as hardcore innovators the Minutemen and professorial idiosyncrasy of Randy Newman, then you can reasonably assume its been made by people who care about music. Lots of it. Jazz, punk, funk, country, acid rock, even piano ballads all these labels have been used, accurately, to describe White Denim.

1972's Life, Love and Faith was Allen Toussaint's first album for Warner Reprise. While a soul record through and through, this effort from the multi-talented New Orleans native shares some of the singer/songwriter vibe of his contemporary labelmates, such as Randy Newman, Joni Mitchell, Lowell George and Little Feat. Stand out tracks include Soul Sister, Victims Of The Darkness and On Your Way Down.On blue vinyl.

The Lights From The Chemical Plant

Produced by Jacquire King (Tom Waits, Kings Of Leon),
Robert Ellis' 2nd album, THE LIGHTS FROM THE CHEMICAL
PLANT, continues his journey into folk music he began 3 years
ago. The songs on the new record, which range from the majestic
string-adorned title track to noir pop rock and somber confessionals,
all show Ellis' growth and the various sides of this multidimensional
songwriter. Ellis recently told Rolling Stone THE LIGHTS FROM THE CHEMICAL
PLANT is "stylistically ambiguous," as he is
inspired by a wide variety of artists. "On this record I was trying
to channel everything from Paul Simon, Randy Newman and Bill
Withers, to free jazz artists like Ornette Coleman," Ellis explained.

    Write In

Happyness' debut, Weird Little Birthday, was filled with their spirited take on US college rock. It landed on numerous year-end best of lists and even won them the coveted NME award for Best Lyric of the Year for the song "Montreal Rock Band Somewhere." Staying rooted in their slacker approach that has endeared them to fans around the world, Happyness' sophomore effort Write In, seems to be a little more piano driven drawing inspiration from unlikely muses including Randy Newman, Roxy Music and Brute Force.

    You Are Not Alone

Soul Gospel Legend at the Top of Her Game: Staples Declared Best Artist at 2010's Lollapalooza Festival

Hallelujah: You Are Not Alone Might Be the Best New Album You Hear in 2010

Stellar Set Produced by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy and Features Songs by Allen Toussaint, John Fogerty, Tweedy, Randy Newman, and More

The best album you hear in 2010? You Are Not Alone will be at the top of the list. This is music that's timeless, soulful, and pertinent, performed with an energy and commitment that burns with the same level of conviction as Mavis Staples' belief in a higher power. Here's a record that will change your life and elevate your mood. Just as its two main architects intended.

When Wilco leader Jeff Tweedy and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Mavis Staples sat down to talk about what they wanted her new album to sound like, they both turned to the original spiritual roots of the Staples Singers as a backbone. Both wanted to make a record about connection, about reaching out to someone through the power of music. What they achieved is the album of Staples' career, a warm, powerful, spiritual, and fervent collection of brilliantly chosen and interpreted songs.

Produced by fellow Chicagoan Jeff Tweedy at Wilcos studio The Loft, the intimate and textured production--glorious on LP--mixes traditional gospel numbers with two new songs written for Mavis by Tweedy, plus her unique interpretations of songs by Pops Staples, Randy Newman, Allen Toussaint, John Fogerty, Rev. Gary Davis and Little Milton. Backed by Mavis smoking touring band (Rick Holmstrom, guitar, vocals; Jeff Turmes, bass, vocals; Stephen Hodges, drums; Donny Gerrard, background vocals) and featuring guest turns from Tweedy and Wilcos Patrick Sansone, with background vocals by Kelly Hogan and Nora OConnor, the album cradles Mavis exquisite voice, allowing her to stretch out emotionally on tracks like Randy Newmans Losing You and the Creedence Clearwater Revival chesnut Wrote a Song For Everyone.

The two songs Jeff wrote for Mavis meld seamlessly into the vibe and theme of the album: He would listen to my conversations, my words, and then feed off that. The songs he wrote take me places I wouldnt normally go, says Mavis.

Already one of the bestâ€received releases of 2010, Mavis message of joy and redemption has found the setting it has always deserved. Truly, a must-own album that will last you a lifetime.

    Golden Suits

Golden Suits is the first solo project of Fred Nicolaus from the band Department of Eagles. After co-writing many of the group's best known songs, Nicolaus was inspired to write a solo album after a strange year that saw him get chased out of an apartment by a rat infestation, go through a painful breakup, travel to Germany to learn about his grandfather's death in WWII, go broke, and lose forty pounds. The result is a collection of ten songs that combine nostalgia, sentimentality, skewed references to a book about suburban marriage in the 1950s, personal confessions and abstract non-sequitors that take a shot at the sublime. Musically, the songs follow the thread of Department of Eagles' swervy take on classic pop in the vein of Randy Newman, Van Dyke Parks, Paul Simon, and Lennon and McCartney solo.
