    The Phantom Limb's sound is an indefinable blend of classic southern soul and country blues. They blend modern songwriting and rich acoustic music with powerful gospel-inflected vocals. Already comparisons are being made to Mavis Staples, Aretha Franklin and The Band. Their honest, melancholic, Bristolian edge creates one of the most original and compelling new propositions of recent years. The group is epitomised by the fantastically bold yet intimately soulful vocals of the 23-year old Yolanda Quarty who also provided vocals on half of Massive Attacks forthcoming album, the majority of which was incidentally co-written and produced by Robot Club (Phantom Limbs guitarist Stew Jackson and bassist Dan Brown). Phantom Limb's self-titled debut album was the brainchild of the Robot Club production team, whose recent writing/production credits also include Will Young, Skin (Skunk Anansie) and Fortune Drive. The album was recorded at their very own Robot Club Studios (Bristol) as well as Rockfields Studio (Monmouth) and Caveman Studios (Bristol). The album was mastered and cut for vinyl at Optimum Studios, Bristol by Shawn Joseph and Timothy Dennen.


    The six-pieces unique sound has made an instant ascension within the industry. In March of 2008 they played the famous SXSW in Austin, Texas, which led to countless festival offers including Glastonburys Jazz World Stage in June 2008 and a record deal with Naim Edge! The bands line-up represents the pick off Bristols vibrant, almost incestuous music scene, including Dan Moore on keys (Elevator Suite/Cousteau/Andy Sheppard), Matt Jones on drums (Nuge/Emily Breeze), Luke Cawthra on lead guitar (Emily Breeze/Lena Rez/Nuge), alongside Yolanda Q (Bugs In The Attic), Stew (Milk with Ian Matthews, now of Kasabian) and Dan B (Ilya/Elevator Suite).

    It can be far too easy to get caught in negativity in today's world. We're surrounded by it in the news, the media and even entertainment. And that's what makes Mod Sun's music and message all the more refreshing.


    "It's about empowerment. It's about saying it's okay to sit by yourself on a Friday night and make music. You'll never be lonely if you love the person you're alone with," says the rapper, whose name stands for "Movement On Dreams Stand Under None."


    A Minnesota native, Mod grew up in a household that played everything from Bob Dylan to Prince, and that eclectic foundation has informed his musical journey. He started playing drums at age 13, and by 16, he began touring with a few bands, including the successful rock group Four Letter Lie.


    But his heart told him to go after something else.


    "I was in a state of comfort, touring and in a band, and I decided I wanted to totally change it up and do something I believed in," the 27-year-old remembers.


    So he gave up that steady gig to pick up the mic. Mod wrote his first song at age 19, and hasn't looked back since. Over the last eight years, he has released six mixtapes and three EPs. He has collaborated with artists including Schoolboy Q, Nipsey Hussle and G-Eazy, and earned a spot as one of sixteen independent artists from around the world competing for the cover of Rolling Stone in 2011.


    After his most recent release, 2012's Happy As Fuck, he again proved his artistic versatility, by momentarily shifting his writing focus in a new direction: His book, Did I Ever Wake Up?


    "It's all about the fact of making your life a dream," he says of the inspirational work. "I was a stubborn kid. You can never learn if you're always right. It took all these things for me to become what I want to be."


    Now, the focus is again squarely on the music. He's built plenty of momentum over the last year, thanks to videos for tracks like "My Hippy, "Free Love" and "Mushrooms." And now, Mod is getting ready to deliver his Friend Base - because he has no fans, only friends - his debut album, which is due at the top of 2015, through Rostrum Records.


    The music has grown, but the underlying message remains.
    "No matter the amount of negativity you're presented with, 5 minutes from now could be your best moment."

    Although the artist born Quincy Matthew Hanley has only been rapping since 2007, his bluntly charismatic presence on wax should've already put him on

    eventually settled in Los Angeles. Like so many before him, ScHoolboy's L.A. experience provided a lifeshaping balance of sports, school, drugs and
    gangs.


    Growing up on the corner of 51st and Figueroa, ScHoolboy Q lived just 8 minutes away from the Staples Center where Kobe Bryant and the Lakers
    hoisted trophies every other year. For a while, Q looked to be on his way to a similar path as he played football, baseball, basketball and even joined the
    swimming team in high school. Unable to resist the lure of his surroundings, he soon found himself drowning in an abyss of slanging crack, shootouts and
    jail time.


    SBQ got a chance to overcome his circumstances and bad decisions with his music in 2007 when he debuted his first mixtape, ScHoolboy Turned
    Hustla. In hindsight, Q says he doesn't think it was his best work. Regardless, the project generated enough attention for growing imprint Top Dawg
    Entertainment to recruit him to the label that was already home to his future Black Hippy co-stars Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar and AbSoul.

    Muse didn't set out to make the most gloriously ambitious album of their career. How could they have?     Influenced by the optimism of The Beatles walking down the airliner steps at New York airport in '64 and the melancholy of The Smiths waiting by the cemetery gates in Manchester in '84,The Crookes tap into 50 years of British pop for their sounds, and 100 years of British social history for the word.


    The Crookes are at the forefront of the latest wave of music to surface in the UK. They are four English Literature graduates whose music is bound with storytelling and tinged with nostalgia. Described by NYLON magazine as the 'potential leaders of England's smart, taut NEW POP movement' they personify English charm and eloquent, intelligent songwriting.


    In 2010 Exposed Magazine readers voted and awarded The Crookes coveted 'Best Unsigned Band' award. Following the success of their debut album Chasing After Ghosts (2011) the band have built up a strong Cult following known as the "Bright Young Things" which further consolidates the strong aesthetic of the band. The band were chosen by Burberry to perform for their Burberry Acoustic range, as well as The Art of the Trench range. They were also taken out to Tokyo to represent the brand for Vogue's Fashion Night Out.


    Following a slight line-up change in 2011 the band have now consolidated their more mature sound resulting in the release of their critically acclaimed second LP HOLD FAST.

    The maturation of the Black Keys as record makers and performers has been both subtle and startling. With their 2008 Nonesuch release Attack & Release, the fifth album of their eight-year career which doubled the sales of their previous album and Nonesuch debut Magic Potion, guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney illustrated the durability of their few-frills sound, a mysterious and heavy brew of '70s-vintage rock, classic R&B and timeless, downhearted blues. Producer and pal Danger Mouse, their first outside collaborator, didn't try to reinvent their sound but further isolated its essence with the help of a few carefully chosen guest players and some retro-modern electronic gear. It didn't need to get slicker to get better, or, as the Boston Globe put it, Attack & Release proves that cleaning up the boys still won't stop them from tracking mud all over the house.


    Danger Mouse returned to co-produce Tighten Up on Brothers, but for the most part, the duo was on its own, spending ten days at the legendary Muscle Shoals studio in Alabama and coming up with the an even more intensely focused, deeply soulful set that includes a cover of Jerry Butler's Never Gonna Give You Up. The performances are inventive and impassioned: Auerbach extends his vocal range to falsetto on lead-off track Everlasting Light and The Only One; Howlin' For You opens with a Gary Glitter-style drum riff and the chorus practically invites singing along. The tunes offer a surprising amount of lyrical candor and more than a little dark humor; the grooves alternate between ballsy swagger and bluesy rumination. The album reflects where Auerbach and Carney have been lately, most recently collaborating with a who's who of New York City MC's, including RZA, Q Tip, Mos Def and Raekwon on the 2009 BlakRocBlack Keys fan Damon Dash. They've also pursued projects on their own, Auerbach with his solo Keep It Hid album and tour, Carney with his band Drummer and its debut disc, Feels Good Together. Their maturation didn't happen just in the studio, though. Carney admits, Dan and I grew up a lot as individuals and musicians prior to making this album. Our relationship was tested in many ways but at the end of the day, we're brothers, and I think these songs reflect that. super-session organized by hip-hop impresario and


    Brothers was primarily cut in Muscle Shoals, a setting that turned out to have more in common with the Akron, Ohio factories where the Black Keys used to record. The place was desolate, the town depressed, so once again the duo slipped into a world all its own. They did additional recording at Auerbach's Easy Eye Sound System in Akron and The Bunker in Brooklyn. The album was mixed by engineer Tchad Blake, a veteran of sessions with Los Lobos, Pearl Jam and Peter Gabriel. Says Carney, The way he approaches mixing is the same way we approach making music.     I Can Spin A Rainbow

    I CAN SPIN A RAINBOW is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream for Amanda Palmer, an avowed fan of Edward Ka-Spel and the Legendary Pink Dots since discovering their psycho-theatrical, multi-textural work in her teens. As noted in her best-selling 2014 memoir, The Art of Asking, the LPD have long been an inspiration to Palmer, their deeply connected relationship with fans as important to her life and work as their fearless autonomy and impossible-to-pigeonhole musical approach.


    The two musicians first met in 1992 when Palmer, then 16, attended a Legendary Pink Dots show in her hometown of Boston. In 1995, having found that the Pink Dots were looking for lodging with fans to save money on the road, Palmer hosted five members of the band and crew at her childhood home. Ten years later, Palmer's internationally acclaimed punk cabaret duo, The Dresden Dolls, had achieved enough success that they were able to invite the Dots to support them on a German tour, and it was then that Palmer and Ka-Spel vowed to carve out time to collaborate on an original recording. A decade passed and in July 2015 a very pregnant Palmer flew to London to start the long-discussed project but was informed on the first day of recording that her dear friend Anthony was losing his battle with cancer and had been given less than a week to live. Heartbroken, she assured Ka-Spel she would be back within the year. Indeed Palmer made good on her promise, returning in the spring of 2016 with her eight-month-old son, Anthony, in tow.


    Palmer and Ka-Spel's search for a London recording studio was interrupted by an incredibly generous offer from Palmer's friend Imogen Heap, who suggested they make use of her Essex home recording studio, The Hideaway, conveniently located near Ka-Spel's own home in Hornchurch. With Palmer traveling between London, Hornchurch, and Heap's home studio, the pair spent just under a month composing and cutting an album entirely from scratch.


    Recorded largely on Ka-Spel's computer, I CAN SPIN A RAINBOW is a truly collaborative effort, "a spiritual experience," says Palmer, in which both artists' stories, song fragments, poems, and lyrics became wholly meshed with loops, melancholy piano playing, melodic beds, and strange rhythms. The results range from the enchantingly minimal "The Clock at the Back of the Cage" and the album-opening "Pulp Fiction," mysterious and strange with a luxurious theatricality that conjures both of its creators' prior oeuvres while also opening a curtain into a heretofore unheard shared sonic world. Sensing the need for strings, the pair enlisted frequent LPD collaborator Patrick Q Wright, who contributed violin tracks from his studio in Italy. Alexis Michallek, Heap's longtime studio assistant, contributes singing saw to "Beyond The Beach."


    "We merged our songwriting heads and poetic worlds to make a new universe," Palmer says. "We would sit in Imogen's house drinking cups of tea, bemoaning the state of the upcoming election, binge drinking in the UK, the refugee crisis, our internet addictions, frightening news we had read, our relationships and then we'd compost all of the ingredients of our fears and conversations into song form. The Rainbow metaphor - which is also a nod to the 'spinning beach ball of death' on a Mac - was a wide-open image that kept popping up as a recurring theme on the record. It's both dark and light at the same time. To me, the songs are simultaneously frightening and comforting, like a thunderstorm heard from a living room."

    Diets? Who needs 'em? Well, if you're like Buddy Hackett, or us you do. A few years ago, I came across a 45-second monologue about trying to lose weight, performed by the comedian Buddy Hackett. It was on a 78 RPM record on the Coral Records imprint. It occurred to me that it could make an interesting dance recording given the right situation and circumstance. Equally inspirational was the book Love Saves the Day: A History of American Dance Music Culture 1970-1979 by Tim Lawrence. In reading it, I saw parallels between the dance culture of that era and the indie-rock/punk/experimental music culture. It unlocked in my mind a genre of music long dormant in memory yet an influence so prevailing in a variety of current musical genres. Woe be it unto the man whose tastes are frozen forever, for given time, space, and understanding, such things become reborn and reimagined as we search for a creative kernel of truth. I went about the realization of this idea with fellow Lambchops and electronic-minded musicians Ryan Norris (Coupler) and Scott Martin (Hobbledeions). Together we became HeCTA.

    Using the idea of combining the notion of "song" and elements from stand-up comedy, and electronic music and a shared love of the electronic form and its many permutations, we respectfully, playfully explored and experimented. It was to be an equal sharing of ideas, influences, and missteps. We were looking for a new way of making songs incorporating these things, to make something concise on beat. The form is not such a surprise when you consider other electronic collaborations I've been involved with: Zero 7's remix of Lambchop's "Up With People" and co-writing X-Press2's "Give It." The results became The Diet, and those songs are with us now. As HeCTA, we take our approach seriously and are respectfully aware of the great electronic music created throughout its history continuing into the present-so much so that when it came time to mix these recordings, we reached out to some of the central figures of the genre. Such greats as Morgan Geist, John McEntire, and Q all had a hand in shaping the refined sound we present to you. With invaluable creativity and engineering by Jeremy Ferguson at Battle Tapes in Nashville, we together created what we consider to be a collection of songs that move and move through you, from the dashboard to the dance floor, from Decatur to Dornburg, from Dorchester to Detroit. Suck it up, hippies. This music is our attempt to extend the boundaries of our expression and have some fun. It's not Americana, house, techno, trap, juke, or blaze. Why would it be? And like any good diet, it will be reviled then ultimately loved by all who give it a chance to work its way into their lives. We love you for trying, and we're trying to love you back. -kurtx

    Leonard Bernstein was one of the most recorded conductor/composers in history and whereas most of his work was released on CBS (Sony) and Deutsche Grammophon, during the 1970s several notable EMI recordings came out of his association with the Orchestre National de France (including Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique.


    EMI had recorded Orchestre National de France (also known as Orchestre National de l'Office de Radiodiffusion TÉlÉvision Française (ORTF)) for many years under its chief conductor Jean Martinon. However, largely as a result of the concerts he gave in the 1970s, Bernstein immediately struck up a rapport with the orchestra and the result was magic: The French orchestra play beautifully for Bernstein, and they also sense the ebb and flow of tempo which he imparts to the music. as the GRAMOPHONE wrote in 1977.


    Recorded on 3 November 1976 at the famous Salle Wagram, Paris.

    "...performance can be recommended as a brilliant and colourful encounter with one of Berlioz's most enjoyable scores" of the last movement JW wrote: "Bernstein makes it thrilling, but not in the frenetic manner which would regard tension as an end in itself, rather than a product of potent feeling. This is a splendidly delivered climax to a work which Bernstein clearly admires. He draws beautifully sharp, clean playing from the orchestra (the brass, in particular, has a cut which exactly suits Berlioz's scoring); and he is given a comparable sound."

    Pianist John Ogdon is backed by the Philharmonia Orchestra lead by Sir John Barbirolli on this audiophile recording of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto alongside Symphonic Variations by Cesar Franck.


    The 1962 International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition, held in Moscow, had joint winners: Vladimir Ashkenazy (then still a Soviet citizen) and the UK's John Ogdon. Ashkenazy was signed up by Decca and went on to carve a brilliant career for himself in the West and is still with us, John Odgon was signed by EMI and also enjoyed a brilliant career as a pianist noted for a phenomenal technique and deep musical sensibilities. He was also the composer of over 200 works, including 4 operas, orchestral and choral music, 2 piano concertos and many works for solo piano. However, in 1974 he suffered a nervous breakdown and displayed symptoms of bipolar disorder but was nursed back to health and performing by his wife and piano duet partner Brenda Lucas. He had become very active again recording and performing before being tragically struck down by pneumonia as a result of undiagnosed diabetes in August 1989.


    Recorded on 17 and 18 December 1962 at No.1 Studio, Abbey Road, London with legendary producer Victor Olof and Ronald Kinloch Anderson, and engineer Robert Gooch.

    In the original June 1963 review in the GRAMOPHONE, Thomas Hearns was torn between the two versions of the same work by Ashkenazy and Ogdon that were both released and reviewed together:

    "It is in this [first] movement that Ogden excels. His opening is grander (helped by a recording full in body); elsewhere he alternates exquisite poetry with glittering brilliance and some wonderfully skittish delicacy... the sheer richness of the Philharmonia's strings or the recording quality gives them the more glorious sound. If I'm really pushed to a recommendation... I think Ogden has it."

    Carlo Giulini conducts the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for this performance of Mahler's First Symphony on audiophile vinyl.


    Carlo Maria Giulini (1914-2005) made his American debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as far back as 1955 but he was appointed Principal Guest Conductor in 1969, an appointment very much instigated by the Music Director of the CSO, Sir Georg Solti, who needed someone to share conducting duties whilst Solti was still running the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Giulini made several magnificent recordings with the CSO for EMI during this period, including another Grammy Award-winning recording: the Brahms Violin Concerto with Itzhak Perlman, available on (HIQLP033.)


    Recorded on 30 March 1971 at the Medinah Temple, Chicago, with producer Christopher Bishop and engineer Carson Taylor.

    In the original August 1971 review in the GRAMOPHONE Edward Greenfield remarked:

    "If you want a Mahler First above all for beauty of tone and phrasing and precision of ensemble, then this is a plain first choice. In addition Giulini's qualities suit this work. For all the orchestral sophistication, he has a transparent honesty which accords well with Mahler in 'Wayfaring Lad' mood. Nor does he use the Chicago orchestra's virtuosity to whip up excitement in fast tempi... Giulini's, sumptuously beautiful all through and never merely slick and over-polished, is certainly one to add to the list of top recommendations, not least for the gorgeousness of the recorded sound... which is even richer than in the three finely-recorded rivals which I list [Solti, Kubelik and Horenstein]."
