ShrinesShrines is the debut album by Purity Ring, a Halifax/Montreal based duo comprised of Corin Roddick and Megan James. Purity Ring make lullabies for the club, drawing equally from airy 90's R&B, lush dream pop, and the powerful, bone-rattling immediacy of modern hip hop. Megan's remarkable voice is at once ecstatic and ethereal, soaring joyfully through Corin's carefully chopped beats, trembling synths, and skewed vocal samples.
Despite the band's young age (Corin is 21, Megan 24) and short gestation (they formed in late 2010), Purity Ring have delivered one of 2012's most assured and anticipated debuts with Shrines. Indeed, Shrines feels like anything but a first record, its vocal hooks are inescapable, its lush production futuristic and sophisticated but also as pristine as anything on pop radio.
The record's eleven tracks trace a unique aesthetic universe that is carefully crafted and fully realized, deftly walking the lines between trap-rap exhilaration and otherworldly rapture, pleasure-center pop and diaristic emotion, childlike dread and total self-possession. Purity Ring's is a universe that invites exploration and demands revisiting.1. Crawlersout

Atrocity ExhibitionHe is unmatchable in flow, delivery, and voice. Danny Brown has all the tools to be the greatest working rapper. -PITCHFORK
Atrocity Exhibition is one of the freshest and boldest-sounding rap albums in recent memory, a sonic swirl inspired by the work of Talking Heads and Joy Division that nonetheless sounds like nothing else from the past or present. Featuring contributions from producers like Evian Christ, Petite Noir (who also lends vocals to the world-weary clang of "Rolling Stone"), Black Milk, the Alchemist and frequent collaborator Paul White, the album is full of laser-beam guitars, gym-teacher whistles, creaking vocal samples, and air-raid drones. It is the most intriguing take on hallucinatory rap since the heady heights of Cold Vein or Madvillainy.
Known for his wide range of collaborations, including everyone from Purity Ring, the Avalanches and Rustie to Schoolboy Q, E-40, and Ghostface Killah, Atrocity Exhibition sees a continuation of this carefully curated mix. Kelela lends her snaking vocals to the intriguingly murky "From the Ground," Cypress Hill's B-Real delivers "Get Hi"'s languid hook, and Earl Sweatshirt, Kendrick Lamar, and Ab-Soul all convene for the twinkling ominousness of album standout "Really Doe." "When XXX came out, all of us were peers, and those were the three rappers who were the best," Brown explains on having the star-packed trio appear on the track. "I felt like we were competitors, they made me want to step my game up. I wanted to put the hottest rappers in the game on there."
This album is a highly personal take on Brown's ruminations on life and the changes that have occurred -and those that didn't - following the ups and downs of career success. Atrocity Exhibition makes for a thrilling third installment in the Danny Brown biopic, one not to be missed.1. Downward Spiral

WaterfallIt's safe to say since his emergence at the tail end of 2011 Evian Christ, aka Joshua Leary, has had a whirlwind two years. Off the back of his breakthrough mixtape "Kings And Them" which came out on Tri Angle Records in February 2012, the 24 year old, Ellesmere Port, UK native has produced on Kanye West's "Yeezus", collaborated with acclaimed conceptual artist Matthew Barney, released the notably abstract sound-piece Duga-3, performed around the world alongside the likes of Purity Ring, Actress and Four Tet and garnering positive reviews and features in global tastemaker press including Details Magazine, Dazed & Confused, Pitchfork and VIBE amongst many others.
Most notably, Evian Christ has signed a publishing deal with DONDA, run by Kanye West, where he will continue with his work as a producer.
His latest EP "Waterfall" finds Evian Christ exhibiting a creative restlessness that continues to make it harder to pigeonhole this young, evolving artist. On "Kings And Them" Evian Christ conjured up a sound that was influenced by hip hop as it much as it was by more ambient forms of music. On "Waterfall" Evian Christ has taken his unique sound into a far noisier and more aggressive territory.
The lead track from "Waterfall", the hip hop laced 'Salt Carousel' may open the record with the sort of dreamlike serenity that typified the vast majority of Kings, but it's really the quiet before the storm as harsher, more abrasive elements rush in and dominate. On 'Fuck Idol' huge walls of digital distortion clash with code red beats that grow more and more frantic as the track progresses, while the title track is a blast of metallic dancehall dread that mutates multiple times over the space of 4 minutes into something truly epic.
Having spent the past year experimenting and challenging himself, and in refusing to simply duplicate a sound that garnered him so much attention to begin with and led one of, if the not, the world's biggest hip hop artists to seek him out, "Waterfall" finds Evian Christ growing in confidence as a producer and continuing to elude any sort of easy categorization.
Recorded partially in his hometown of Ellesmere Port and partially in New York, "Waterfall" was mixed by Noah Rubin (Pusha T, Wu Tang Clan) and mastered by Heba Kedry (The Mars Volta, Liturgy, Fis). Track 2, 'Propeller', contains a sample of 'Nine' by close friend and affiliate producer, Lukid.1. Salt Carousel

The Air Conditioned NightmareThe Air Conditioned Nightmare is the new album by
Doldrums. The title was spawned by Henry Miller upon his
return to the US after ten years as an expatriate. Keen to
rediscover the country he left behind, Miller found it a
stifling place of big business, pollution, credit, misinformation
and prejudice. "Nowhere else in the world," wrote in his
1945 collection of essays "is the divorce between man and
nature so complete". The Air Conditioned Nightmare.
Seventy years on and the book lends itself to the title of the
anticipated second album by Doldrums, the band led by 25
year old musician Airick Woodhead. On the follow-up to his
2013 debut Lesser Evil (which yielded tours with Unknown
Mortal Orchestra, Crystal Castles, Grimes and Purity Ring,
and remixes for Peaking Lights, Grimes and Portishead), the
DJ, producer and performer makes a sizeable leap from
being darling of the Montreal warehouse creative explosion
that gave the world the likes of Grimes, Majical Cloudz, Blue
Hawaii to being a stand-alone artist and composer on the
cusp of something quite special.
Doldrums apply a punk rock ethos to electronic music,
creating songs using samplers and DJ gear in place of
guitars. Bold, anxious, dream-like, uplifting, glacial,
hypnotic, constricting, expansive, alien - this is an album
that is ever-changing. "Conflict is at the heart of this
album," explains Airick. "There's a lot of paranoid sentiment
and dystopian imagery in there. The threat of a mundane
reality ties it together, as does an obsession with plasticity.
Songs come from specific feelings or images. Anxiety is my
The Air Conditioned Nightmare is an album of texture and
taste, an extra-sensory overload. Weaving through the mix
are Woodhead's androgynous, tweaked vocals singing lyrics
like voices down broken phone-lines. This is music born of
the 21st century. The Air Conditioned Nightmare is an album
that is punk rock in its DIY beginnings and militant commitment
to originality. Ten snatched seconds is enough to pull

Skin & Earth (Pre-Order)Throughout a year long process, she began secretly working on an unprecedented idea writing and drawing her own comic book based around this alter ego of sorts. And on top of that, just to make things more difficult - an album to coincide with the whole thing.
Thus came Skin&Earth, the Canadian singer's fourth record and her most open and vulnerable to date. In the past, Lights wouldn't write about being angry or Lights wouldn't write a song about fighting or Lights wouldn't write about sex, she says. So En is me in another dimension, and I was able to write about all the things that I never wrote about before.
The album form of Skin&Earth also brings help from some of music's brightest including Corin Roddick of Purity Ring, Big Data and Josh Dun of Twenty One Pilots. Everything that happened on this record was really fun and natural and felt like we were all working towards the same goal, she says. It was this organic mutual fan-ship kind of thing that brought it all together. She continues, This is the most fun I've had doing a record. I've never felt that I understood a record more and I've never felt like I understood a reason for a record more.
Ultimately for Lights, the most important takeaway from the story of Skin&Earth is of a young woman entranced by a spirit that she and she alone must overcome. This is based on internal, emotional stress and turmoil - stuff that I've dealt with and stuff that a lot of people have dealt with. I've always believed that all those battles can be fought and you come out of this stronger. And that was the foundation of the story, she says. At the end of the day, if nothing else, I want people, especially young women, to see in this character a little bit of themselves - see that an ordinary person can do amazing things and fight battles nobody else can see, and there's no shame in that. In fact, there's a lot of beauty in it.1. Intro

You Can See Yourself In These Headphones
By using tone-wood clad with metal alloy we've obliterated two of the most vexing issues in headphone design: ringing in the chamber, and transient distortion. This gives audio professionals the security of consistent response throughout the frequency range. Did we mention they look awesome? You could pay more for headphones, but you can't afford anything less.
This hybrid design has an inner sleeve of hand-crafted mahogany made by using the new series 'e' curing process. Its outer housing, machined from chrome-plated aluminum, utilizes a special processing and casting method to increase the porosity of the alloy. This combination of wood and metal insures that the earphone chamber has no 'ringing' which might obscure detail or add coloration. The way the wood and metal housing moves air and reacts to sound vibrations is virtually unaffected by transient distortions. Grado has also designed the cable for the PS1000e; the twelve-conductor cable design uses UHPLC (Ultra-High Purity, Long Crystal) copper, improves control and stability of the total range of the frequency spectrum. The PS1000e also has a new 50mm driver and a newly re-configured voice coil and diaphragm design, resulting in unsurpassed speed and accuracy responses.
The cushion design creates the correct balance between the driver and housing to support the desired musicality. The cushion design also makes the PS1000e one of the most comfortable headphones in the world. Grado has taken all of our knowledge and over 60 years of experience in controlling resonances and eliminating distortions, and put them into our finest headphone ever, the PS1000e. Grado is unbelievably proud of this flagship product listen and enjoy.
...the Grado PS1000 doesn't have few peers - it has none - at least none that I've ever heard in my home, other audiophile's homes, in audio salons, or in professional recording studios.

Miles In The Sky (On Sale)Numbered, Limited Edition
1968 Record Marks First Time Davis Uses Electric Piano, Bass, and Guitar: Second Half is Acoustic
Mastered from the Original Master Tapes: Seminal Proto-Fusion Effort Explodes With Color and Vibrancy
Final Effort With Davis' Classic Second Quintet Finds the Leader Looking to the Past and the Future
Miles in the Sky reflects the intriguing curiosities and rainbow possibilities suggested by the album cover. Miles Davis' fifth and final album with his classic second quintet is kaleidoscopic in sound, forward-looking in structure, and contextually grounded in approach. As the legendary leader's first venture into what would become fusion, it's historical for containing the premier appearances of electric piano, bass, and guitar on a Davis effort. Laden with rich textures and style-bridging elements, Mobile Fidelity's 45RPM pressing brings the aural magic into focus.
Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl at RTI, this collectable audiophile version of Miles in the Sky joins the ranks of eleven other essential Davis sets given supreme sonic and packaging treatment by Mobile Fidelity. Afforded the benefits provided by the record's wider grooves, Davis' burnished trumpet resounds with utmost clarity, and the soundstage seems to extend for days. Reference-caliber separation and imaging give each musician their own space, allowing every passage to come across without any sonic limitations.
The album's wide-open soundscapes soar. As do the fluid contributions of Davis' mates. Tony Williams' percussion, central to every composition here, transpires before your eyes. Herbie Hancock's piano hovers and fades with sublime purity. And George Benson, who sits on Paraphernalia, blows the equivalent of smoke rings with his bluesy guitar, which here takes on brilliant tonality and definition. The acoustic material that occupies the second half of the record is equally transparent and full-bodied.
Granted enhanced production and a greater field of audible information, Miles in the Sky can finally be perceived as belonging to the same upper echelon as Davis' ubiquitously acclaimed Nefertiti and Filles de Kilimanjaro--the albums that precede and follow, respectively, this watershed title. Commonly branded a transitional work, Miles in the Sky showcases Davis already at ease with electric instruments and eager to venture into uncharted territories. Doubling as organized jams and bridges between jazz and rock, both the rhythmically challenging Stuff and frisky Paraphernalia glancing toward the future while keeping solid footing in the past.
Similarly, so do Country Boy and Black Comedy. In his original review for jazz authority DownBeat, Larry Kart observes: Davis takes material from his earlier days and darkens its emotional tone. His opening phrase on 'Country Boy' recalls a fragment from his Summertime solo on the Porgy and Bess album, but here it is delivered with a vehemence that rejects the poignancy of the earlier performance. Even on 'Black Comedy,' his most straight ahead solo here, the orderly pattern of the past is displaced and fragmented.
Flavored with humor, bossa nova, country, and even ballroom phrases, the compositions on Miles in the Sky explodes with creativity, purpose, and color.
