Of Horses, Kids, And Forgotten Women

Originally released in 1968, Hearts And Flowers' second and final album, Of Horses, Kids, and Forgotten Women, is mentioned mostly in passing as the major recording debut of future Eagle, Bernie Leadon. This is totally unfair as the album is a classic slice of late '60s West Coast psychedelic country-rock that is as good as or better than their amazing debut. Reissued here on 180g vinyl with a deluxe tip-on jacket from 4 Men With Beards.

Fantasia del Barrio is the missing link between the Psychedelic sounds of Texas and the Chicano Soul and Funk of the late 1960s and early 70s. Recorded soon after Eugenio Jaimez returned from a tour of duty in Vietnam, Fantasia del Barrio is his musical meditation on life at war and the Chicano experience at home. Skillfully performed in one marathon recording session, Jaimez and El Gusano embraced the Soul, Funk and psychedelic sounds of their day to craft this lost instrumental concept album. Long sought-after by break hunters and psych collectors, Heavy Light Records is proud to bring Eugenio Jaimez, Jrs masterpiece to light.

In 2008, Endless Boogie was nudged into the spotlight with Focus Level, a glorious set of thick psychedelic rock. It was the culmination of their 10 year existence, most of which was spent in a Lower East Side rehearsal space. But upon its release Focus Level was met with near-unanimous praise; being named "debut of the month" in Uncut Magazine, hailed as "note-perfect" by Rolling Stone and earning a loyal, growing fan base around the world.

Led by front man Paul Major, the group entered Rare Book Room studios in December of 2009 and made a brilliant 2nd album. Anchored by deep, heady grooves and epic guitar playing, the Endless Boogie delivered seven fully realized studio tracks and one monumental rehearsal jam, sounding comfortable and focused, not weighed down by any pretension.

    The Psychedelic Swamp

The Psychedelic Swamp is Dr. Dog's ninth album, and third studio release with ANTI- Records. Most of the songs were among the first ever written together by Scott McMicken and Toby Leaman and an assemblage of friends and musical cohorts that would evolve as Dr. Dog over the years. This early endeavor of writing a concept album helped shape their creative process as they became a label-defying multi-hyphenated indie-psychedelic-rock-folk-Americana-basement-touring band.

The Psychedelic Swamp could very well have been Dr. Dog's first album. It could have been their only album; or it could have never been made at all. It's either a refined culmination of 15 years of collaborative music-making or the raw instrument on which they cut their teeth. This chicken vs. egg debate will be for historians to decide; fact is that if The Psychedelic Swamp was half-baked back in 2001, it has been reborn in 2016, fully baked.

Forge Your Own Chains: Heavy Psychedelic Ballads & Dirges 1968-1974

This compilation introduces a new direction for Now-Again Records and its owner, producer and famed crate-digger Egon. With the same detailed, no-stone-unturned approach he used for Deep Funk
(The Funky 16 Corners, Cold Heat), he tackles beat-heavy global psychedelia with Forge Your Own Chains.

"Those of us birthed into record collecting by the Hip Hop midwife revered Jimi Hendrix as well as James Brown. We searched for albums by Mulatu Astatke and Power of Zeus with the same fervor," Egon writes in his introduction to the comp.

Forge Your Own Chains showcases music from all corners of the world: Colombia, Nigeria, Sweden, South Korea, Thailand and Iran. The focus - in keeping with Now-Again's tradition - is on melody, driving rhythms and accessibility. Not one song is included on this compilation because it is from a "rare" album. Certainly, many of these songs do spring from albums that exchange hands for many thousands of dollars and many of these songs have never seen reissue. But these songs are all beautiful in their own right and work to form a coherent album.

Psychedelic records, long the mainstay of older, grizzled collectors and seemingly quaint, are, in the hands of Egon and those of his generation, giving up new ghosts. And, with comps like Forge Your Own Chains, inspiring new investigations into our not so distant (and still very much alive) musical past.

One of Damned afficionados fave pursuits is debating which of the various lineups was the best. Certainly the one that produced the 'Black Album' and 'Strawberries' has got to be a prime contender. So with this in mind bassist extraordinaire Paul Gray and the best guitarist in Croydon (apart from Ralph McTell) Captain Sensible got together somewhere in the Welsh countryside with the aim of writing a bunch of new tunes about subjects dear to their hearts - in between visits to the local pub, of course.

Suitably fortified by foaming pints of Timothy Taylor Landlord, the music and lyrics quickly took shape. Building upon Captain's unique guitar style and Paul's trademark Rickenbacker basslines, the pair utilised an eclectic bunch of instruments including 12 string guitars, hammond organs, harpsichords, sitars, and bouzouki's, giving a nice psychedelic eastern feel to many of the tracks. Keeping it real with a tasteful drummer chum of Paul's by the name of Ant Thickett, a recording studio was eschewed in favour of a real garage, 5 mics, a bass drum kept in place by a Doc Marten boot, a bunch of duvets for sound proofing, and a laptop, with sustenance being provided in the form of tea and cakes provided by the lovely Kate, who also happens to contribute some piano to one of the tracks. Oh yes, and former Hawkwind legend Nik Turner also provides some exceedingly tasteful sax, too

With a lovely natural drum sound to work with (all recorded in one day) the vocals and overdubs were mostly done in Paul's kitchen. Listen carefully and you may be able to hear the hens clucking contentedly in the background and with mixing and mastering duties undertaken by Steve Goldenears Davies, the band name The Sensible Gray Cells' was decided upon, with the results about to be available to one and all.

Entitled 'A Postcard From Britain' the album takes as its theme all aspects of life (good and bad) in the strange but wonderful country in which the band live. But do they name names? Indeed they do .

    Easter Everywhere

On their groundbreaking debut album, the 13th Floor Elevators sometimes sounded as if they were still learning how to work with the strange beast of their own creation known as psychedelic rock. But their second set, 1967's Easter Everywhere, found them a great deal more comfortable and confident with their loose and hypnotically trippy approach.

Easter Everywhere doesn't have an out-of-the-box classic cut like You're Gonna Miss Me or Fire Engine from The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators, but in many ways it's a more cohesive and consistent work, and the subtle but effective structures of the longer tracks grow and develop through repeated listenings, while rockers like She Lives (In a Time of Her Own) and Levitation pack a surprisingly visceral punch. Stacy Sutherland was never a blazing guitar hero, but his concise aural punctuations on the epochal Slip Inside This House and a superb cover of Dylan's It's All Over Now, Baby Blue are perfectly suited to the material. In addition, the rhythm section of Dan Galindo on bass and Danny Thomas on drums locks these songs into place with confidence and skill. The strange patterns of Tommy Hall's electric jug playing are as gloriously bewildering as ever, merging the music of the spheres with an alien attack, and Roky Erickson's vocals make even the most acid-damaged poesy sound passionate, graceful, and wildly alive. And Roky and the Elevators never sounded sweeter and saner than they did on the penultimate tune, I Had to Tell You, with Roky seemingly offering a postscript to his many sad years to follow with the words If you fear I'll lose my spirit/Like a drunkard's wasted wine/Don't you even think about it/I'm feeling fine.

Even if less influential than The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators, Easter Everywhere is every bit as compelling and a true benchmark of early psychedelic rock -- not bad for an album produced by Kenny Rogers' brother.

The American Metaphysical Circus is a 1969 psychedelic album by Joseph Joe Byrd. It was recorded after his departure from the band The United States of America, and featured some of the earliest recorded work in rock music utilizing extensive use of synthesizers and vocoder, along with an extended group of West Coast studio musicians Byrd named The Field Hippies.

The album is most noted for The Sub-Sylvian Litanies, which opened Side A. This three-part suite has been described as an entire acid trip in 11 minutes. Other album highlights include the equally psychedelic The Elephant at the Door, and the politically charged Invisible Man, written for and aimed squarely at President Lyndon B. Johnson. Two of the more unusual tracks on the record are Mister Fourth of July - a ragtime tune complete with scratchy 78RPM-style effects, and Leisure World, featuring narration from long-time ABC voice-over and Ghoulardi originator Ernie Anderson in an ode to California's first retirement mega-community.

Among the musicians featured on the record are prominent West Coast studio musicians Tom Scott and the late Ted Greene, who is credited with the album's stellar guitar work in one of his few recorded appearances. Meyer Hirsch was a member of the Buddy Rich Big Band and is an experimental composer. Vocalist Victoria Bond has gone on to a prominent career as a classical composer, conductor and vocalist. Fred Selden, a student of Byrd's at UCLA, joined the Don Ellis Orchestra (led by Byrd's partner in the UCLA New Music Workshop), received a Grammy nomination, and later returned to UCLA to receive his Ph.D.

The extensive use of effects, delays, echoes, backwards vocals and other recording tricks and techniques are reminiscent of some of the experiments and work carried out by George Martin as well as Pink Floyd. Byrd in fact referenced Martin in a 2004 interview

    Dead Forever

Dead Forever... is the debut album for Australian proto-Heavy Metal band Buffalo, recorded and originally released in 1972. Considered by some to be the first Australian heavy metal album, Dead Forever... also strongly displayed the band's progressive rock and psychedelic influences. Significantly, it was the first release by a non-British and non-European artist on the legendary Vertigo label.

    Psychedelic Lollipop

The Blues Magoos launched their recording career with a major smash, hitting the Top Five with the brash garage-punk anthem (We Ain't Got) Nothin' Yet. That tune is just one of the multiple pleasures of Psychedelic Lollipop, notable as one of the first albums (along with the 13th Floor Elevators' debut) to use the word psychedelic in its title. The band balances swaggering proto-punk attitude, a Beatlesque pop sensibility and adventurous acid-pop experimentalism on such tunes as Gotta Get Away, One by One and Love Seems Doomed. And the Magoos' high-energy workouts on James Brown's I'll Go Crazy and John Loudermilk's Tobacco Road rank with the greatest versions of those much-covered garage-band standards.

This 60s garage-psych nugget is now available from Sundazed on High Definition Vinyl, sourced from the original Mercury-label stereo masters, with the colorful original cover art meticulously reproduced.

In their '60s heyday, the Blues Magoos were one of the first garage-punk bands to achieve mainstream success, and one of the first to embrace psychedelia. Early in their existence, the Bronx-bred quintet's high-energy live sets made them a popular attraction on the Greenwich Village club scene. Once they began making records, they quickly emerged as one of one of the earliest and most inventive exponents of the psychedelic sound. The band's 1966 debut album Psychedelic Lollipop and its 1967 followup Electric Comic Book, are two of that period's most beloved and enduring albums.

    Psychedelic Pill

    Pressed at Pallas in Germany

Cut at Bernie Grundman's by Chris Bellman

The first album of original music from Neil Young and Crazy Horse in almost a decade, including over 85 minutes of music. Psychedelic Pill pokes down pathways that have been hinted at before in this teaming, but never fully explored. New textures emerge in the music, new landscapes in the lyrics. In many ways, Psychedelic Pill rounds out an array of probing works with prominent autobiographical threads.

Whether as a singer, a songwriter or a guitarist, Neil Young has been one of the most influential and important artists of the rock era. Blending folk, country and rock, the acoustic and the electric, the melancholy and the hopeful, Young has been an icon for the uncompromising and unpredictable since the 1960s.
