    A Salty Dog (Pre-Order)

Procol Harum Fuses Classical Structures, Rock Motifs, and Sweeping Melodies with Unparalleled Virtuosity: A Salty Dog Features Ravishing Symmetry Between Piano, Organ, Guitar, and Strings

Mastered from the Original Master Tapes for Reference-Level Sound, Clarity, and Presence: Ultra-Dynamic Mobile Fidelity 180g Vinyl LP Limited to 3,000 Numbered Copies

A call for all hands on deck opens Procol Harum's third album, and with that command, an effort that witnesses the band coming into its own as a collective capable of fusing classical structures with rock motifs via an expertise, virtuosity, and style matched by none of its peers is on its way to making history. A Salty Dog survives as proof no other artist ever sounded like Procol Harum - while also demonstrating few collectives boasted a lineup full of such ace instrumentalists. Stacked with exploratory themes, boundary-crossing directions, and sweeping melodies, A Salty Dog proudly veers off traditional course and ventures to intrepid places forbidden to even the most thrill-seeking groups of the highly experimental era.

Mastered from the original master tapes, pressed at RTI, and strictly limited to 3,000 numbered copies, Mobile Fidelity's 180g vinyl LP takes its place as the definitive-sounding analog version of the record. The intertwined symmetry between organist Matthew Fisher and pianist Gary Brooker, central to every song on the set, gets revealed with newfound detail, openness, and clarity. Produced by Fisher, A Salty Dog now resonates with a presence and immediacy stunted on prior editions. The full-bodied tones, front-to-back imaging, and grand dynamics inherent on this audiophile edition elevate the 1969 favorite to landmark status. In addition, the evocative cover art, which pays homage to the Player's Navy Cut logo, is reproduced in faithful-to-the-original fashion.

The cinematic breadth of the sonics parallels the scope of the bold arrangements, which include strings, recorders, bells, celeste, and a myriad of guitars. Brooker and Fisher split vocal duties, save for on Crucifiction Lane, which boasts a rare lead from marvel-in-the-making Robin Trower. The latter's prodigious guitar lines add another distinctive element to the compositions and further up the ante of the interplay between Brooker and Fisher. Trower accents tracks such as the topsy-turvy The Milk of Human Kindness with bluesy vibes and jolts Juicy John Pink by way of jukejoint energy. Not to be outdone, B.J. Wilson's still-unsung percussion draws from R&B and swing techniques to supply a natural albeit firm footing.

For all the proficient playing and narrative storytelling, the most impressive feat surrounding A Salty Dog remains its accessible complexity and relative modesty. Procol Harum never comes across as pretentious, self-indulgent, or contrived. Anchored by Fisher's unique Hammond M102 organ riffs, the works function as a summation of their parts. Tunes like Wreck of the Hesperus serve as wondrously varied tapestries stitched with swelling chamber rhythms, barbed thickets of distortion, and thundering progressions. It's a ravishing picture of majestic subtlety and sheer power.

NME wrote shortly after the record's release that the most exciting facet of this tremendous album is not so much that it contains the Procols' best recorded works to date, but that their potential is still nowhere near being fully spent. Rolling Stone concurred, observing, 'Too Much Between Us' is the kind of song you can float away on - its background and vocal of marimba and acoustic guitar in a perfectly understated waltz-time are beautifully ethereal.

A notable footnote, Fisher departed Procol Harum shortly after the release of A Salty Dog, permanently impacting the band's trajectory and sound. His performances here are just one reason this inimitable album carries sway nearly five decades after its release.

    Broken Barricades

    Grey Vinyl

Broken Barricades is the fifth studio album by British rock band Procol Harum. The sound of the band on this album is a bit sparser, but definitely not without dimension and dynamics. Simple Sister, one of the finest Gary Brooker/Keith Reid compositions, is truly glorious. With Robin Trower's frightening lead guitar work juxtaposed nicely against a wonderful string arrangement. The tracks are first rate. Procol Harum was a great survivor among rock bands that have lost a key member. The proof is in these grooves.

    Last Summer

Eleanor Friedberger is known for her work in Chicagos the Fiery Furnaces, a band she created with her brother Matthew at the turn of the millennium. Together they won a number of awards, sold out shows the world over and recorded nine albums. That experience, combined with the fact that the Fiery Furnaces arent breaking up, inspired her to make her first solo record, Last Summer.

In the music, you will hear the casual confrontation of the most emotionally direct Fiery Furnaces songs, plus a lot of snap, crackle and pop. In fact, in these songs made of memories, you will hear the future. Sparks, Donovan, Procol Harum, Kath Bloom, Lô Borges and Todd Rundgren too. Friedbergers phrasing is as good as anyones; even better, when the lines over and most other singers would leave it right there, shell throw in an unnecessary extra syllable.

Soul Deep is an essential compilation of The Box Tops' best tracks. Hailing from 1960's Memphis, The Box Tops are best known for the hits The Letter, Cry Like a Baby and Soul Deep, and are considered a major blue-eyed Soul group of the period.

They performed a mixture of current Soul music songs by artists such as James & Bobby Purify and Clifford Curry, Pop tunes such as A Whiter Shade of Pale by Procol Harum, and songs written by their producers, Dan Penn, Spooner Oldham, and Chips Moman.

Their records are prime examples of the styles made popular by Moman and Penn at American Sound Studio in Memphis. Many of their lesser known Top 40 hits, including Neon Rainbow, I Met Her in Church, and Sweet Cream Ladies, Forward March, are considered minor classics.

    Hapshash and the Coloured Coat

Featuring The Human Host And The Heavy Metal Kids

One of the most sought-after of all '60s cult LPs, 1967's Hapshash and the Coloured Coat Featuring the Human Host and the Heavy Metal Kids is the sort of record that could only have emerged during the psychedelic era, and a vibrant manifestation of that period's freewheeling boundary-breaking spirit of adventure.

Hapshash and the Coloured Coat, the English duo of Michael English and Nigel Weymouth, initially achieved notoriety as a graphic design team whose distinctive visual sensibility placed them at the center of London's original psychedelic explosion. The pair's vivid visual imagination spawned numerous album covers, including Cream's Disraeli Gears, and countless posters promoting performances at London's legendary UFO Club by such acts as Pink Floyd and the Incredible String Band. Those visual works brilliantly captured the London scene's buoyant, mind-expanding vibe, and feature some of the psychedelic era's most arresting imagery.

Such was Hapshash & the Coloured Coat's prominence and influence that, in 1967, they were given the opportunity to branch out as a recording act. For the occasion, English and Weymouth teamed with legendary producer/manager/DJ/scenester Guy Stevens, whose lengthy resume encompasses work with the Rolling Stones, Procol Harum, Mott the Hoople and The Clash.

The result was Hapshash & the Coloured Coat Featuring the Human Host and the Heavy Metal Kids. The unlikely collaboration produced a one-of-a-kind sonic experience that exemplifies the spirit of psychedelia while sounding like no other record of its time, mixing primal vocal chants and insistent tribal rhythms with proto-funk guitar and bluesy piano on such memorably titled tracks as H-O-P-P Why?, The New Messiah Coming 1985, Empires of the Sun and A Mind Blown Is a Mind Shown.

Out of print on vinyl for decades and never before reissued domestically, Hapshash & the Coloured Coat featuring the Human Host & the Heavy Metal Kids has been meticulously restored for this LP reissue, using Sundazed's usual exacting standards. The album is pressed on high-quality audiophile vinyl, and features complete original cover art.

    Seven Moons

Vinyl LP pressing of this 2008 album from this duo consisting of British Rock legends Jack Bruce (Cream) and Robin Trower (Procol Harum). The duo made two joint recordings in the early 1980's, and teamed up again for this record, this time with British drummer Gary Husband (Level 42). What makes Seven Moons such a success is that Bruce and Trower each play to their strengths, Bruce brings his distinctive croon/moan to bluesy, riff-oriented tunes dominated by Trower's playing. They conjure a power trio sound which touches on Cream and Hendrix yet draws from their own deep, dark wells of experience.

Bill Fay is one of English music's best kept secrets. At the dawn of the 1970s, he was a one-man song factory, with a piano that spilled liquid gold and a voice every bit the equal of Ray Davies, John Lennon, early Bowie, or Procol Harum's Gary Brooker.

He made two solo albums but his contract wasn't renewed, which left his LPs and his reputation to become cult items. But he never stopped writing, the music kept on coming.

Now, in his late sixties, he has produced Life Is People, a brand new studio album that shows his profoundly humanist vision is as strong as it ever was.

    $100 Fine

How do you top THE LITTER'S godlike '67 longplayer, Distortions? Well, you don't. But leave it to THE LITTER to deliver the equally essential (not to mention hopelessly rare) '68 follow-up, $100 Fine. From the ultra-explosive album opener, "Mindbreaker" (where the Distortions sound now takes on Blue Cheer-like heaviosity) to the LP's epic finale; a nine-minute, ambitiously retooled "She's Not There," $100 Fine ranks as one of its era's masterpieces.

In a tradition established on Distortions, THE LITTER again prove they were the most totally inspired - no, make that totally English-inspired - cover band to invade a US recording studio. $100 Fine includes exceptional covers of Jeff Beck ("Tally Man"), newcomers Procol Harum ("Kaleidoscope"), and last but certainly most obscure, a cover of "Here I Go Again" by Eire Apparent.

But what separates $100 Fine from its predecessor is the emergence of original material; from the 'Fresh Cream'-style harmonica wailer "Blues One" to heavier psychedelic fare like "(Under the Screaming Double) Eagle." For further enticement, we should mention everything is drenched in double-tracked, screaming fuzz from Midwest guitar legend Tom "Zip" Caplan. Unfairly rare but now rescued by Sundazed and sounding exactly like it should. PLAY LOUD!!!! PLAY EVEN LOUDER!!!!

    Passion

Guitarist Robin Trower enjoyed considerable success in the mid-'70s with his tasteful, Jimi Hendrix-inspired style of blues-rock. The Procol Harum veteran's popularity faded as the 1980s progressed, but Trower generally stayed active. 1987's Passion is interesting because it straddles '70s grittiness and '80s slickness. Trower and his band -- lead vocalist Davey Pattison, bass guitarist/vocalist Dave Bronze, and drummer Pete Thompson -- form a tight, efficient unit. The simple textures provided by guest keyboardists Robert A. Martin and Reg Webb give the songs extra depth. Caroline earned a bit of rock radio airplay, and justifiably so, thanks to its hooks and Trower's warm guitar solo; Pattison's singing is reliable, but his voice isn't quite as rich, deep and distinctive as that of James Dewar, Trower's best-known vocalist. If Forever is a clean, no-frills ballad, and Trower's guitar solo balances blues and pop. Both Won't Even Think About You and Passion are melodic hard rock. The soothing instrumental Night gives Passion an enjoyable change of pace.
