    Purple Rain

Ranked 72/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

    Best-Sounding Prince Title Available!

Prince designed Purple Rain as the project that would make him a superstar, and that's exactly what happened. Simultaneously more focused and ambitious than any of his previous records, Purple Rain finds Prince consolidating his funk and R&B roots while moving boldly into pop, rock, and funk on nine superbly crafted songs.

Although Prince's songwriting is at a peak, the presence of the Revolution helps pull the music into even sharper focus, giving it a tougher, more aggressive edge. When Doves Cry is an eerie, spare neo-psychedelic masterpiece, Lets Go Crazy is a furious blend of metallic guitars, Stonesy riffs, and a hard funk backbeat. And the anthemic title track is a majestic ballad filled with a brilliant guitar outro. All in all, Purple Rain is a stunning statement of purpose that remains one of the most exciting rock & roll albums ever created.

Lacquers Cut By Chris Bellman At Bernie Grundman Mastering

1999 is the fifth studio album by American recording artist Prince. It was released on October 27, 1982 by Warner Bros. Records. The album was his first top ten album on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States (peaking at number 9) and became the fifth best-selling album of 1983 and was certified Multi-Platinum by RIAA. 1999 was Prince's breakthrough album, but his next album, Purple Rain, would become his most successful. The title track was a protest against nuclear proliferation and became his first top ten hit in countries outside the United States.

It was also the first album to feature The Revolution. The band's moniker is written in reverse on the front cover.

According to the Rolling Stone Album Guide, 1999 may be Prince's most influential album: Its synth-and-drum machine-heavy arrangements codified the Minneapolis sound that loomed over mid-'80s R&B and pop, not to mention the next two decades' worth of electro, house, and techno. In 2003, the TV network VH1 placed 1999 49th in its list of the greatest albums of all time. The album was also part of Slant Magazine's list The 50 Most Essential Pop Albums and the magazine listed the album at #8 on its list of Best Albums of the 1980s. The album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2008. In 2003, the album was ranked number 163 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Parade (Music From The Motion Picture Under The Cherry Moon)

Calling this one of Prince's most interesting albums doesn't do justice to how kicky and playable it is. The soundtrack from his romantic comedy Under the Cherry Moon, the album often sounds like a preview of the supremely surefooted quirkiness of its follow-up, the classic Sign o' the Times. Marrying lean funk grooves to over-the-top orchestrations and trying his hand at Parisian balladry and a hushed, Pet Sounds-style instrumental, he triumphs as few other record makers did in 1986. --Rickey Wright

The Most Beautiful Girl In The World

The Most Beautiful Girl in the World is a song by Prince from his 1995 album The Gold Experience. It was his first release since changing his stage name to an unpronounceable symbol. With the consent of Prince's usual record distributor Warner Bros. Records, The Most Beautiful Girl in the World was released by NPG Records and Edel Music and independently distributed by Bellmark Records, under the control and guidance of Chris France at Music Of Life as a one-off single. The single was released in February 1994 in the UK and is still his only No 1 in the UK, and was shortly followed by an EP of remixes titled The Beautiful Experience that also charted at 18 in the UK national charts. The version that was released on The Gold Experience is a different mix of the song.

    Prince

Prince is the eponymous second studio album by American recording artist Prince. It was originally released on October 19, 1979 by Warner Bros. Records. The album was written, arranged, composed, produced and performed entirely by Prince, with the only known contribution from another person being some vocal harmony added by close friend/bassist AndrÉ Cymone on Track 2.

Prince recorded the album in just a few weeks after Warner Bros. asked for a follow-up to his 1978 debut, For You. Prince had used twice his initial recording advance on the album, and it had failed to generate a pop hit (although Soft and Wet became a No. 12 R&B hit). Displeased at his lack of success, Prince quickly recorded the follow-up.

Overall, the album was much more diverse and well-received than For You, critically and commercially. The success of this album geared Prince towards his next, Dirty Mind, which would be called a complete departure from his earlier sound.

    For You

Prince's debut album, originally released in 1978.

Few artists have created a body of work as rich and varied as Prince. During the '80s, he emerged as one of the most singular talents of the rock & roll era, capable of seamlessly tying together pop, funk, folk, and rock. Not only did he release a series of groundbreaking albums; he toured frequently, produced albums and wrote songs for many other artists, and recorded hundreds of songs that still lie unreleased in his vaults. With each album he released, Prince has shown remarkable stylistic growth and musical diversity, constantly experimenting with different sounds, textures, and genres. Occasionally, his music can be maddeningly inconsistent because of this eclecticism, but his experiments frequently succeed; no other contemporary artist can blend so many diverse styles into a cohesive whole.

The melodies are immediate and prominent as ever and Prince's vocals are rich and solid, taking full advantage of his vocal range with decidedly, seductive lyrics.

In 1991 Prince and The NPG were invited to play two dates as part of Rock In Rio 2, the second edition of the Brazilian-based music festival, the largest in the world. The result, presented here across over two instalments, is perhaps one of the finest shows in musical history. With the crowd in the palm of his hand throughout, Prince put on a quite superlative performance, as thrilling as ever, and featured such legendary tracks as 'Purple Rain', 'Kiss', 'Nothing Compares 2 U' and a staggering 28 minutes medley of 'Baby I'm A Star'.

Sign 'O' The Times (Awaiting Repress)

It begins with the insistent drip-drop of a sequencer and ends with some old school R&B. In between, the artist who was still calling himself Prince unfurls an encyclopedia of moods, genres, and grooves. Widely heralded as a groundbreaker in 1987, this two-LP set is clearly the sound of a performer at the height of his power. On songs like the title track, If I Was Your Girlfriend, and the thunderous The Cross, Prince proves why the hype was justified. --Amy Linden
