    Where Greater Men Have Fallen

Comments singer A.A. Nemtheanga on Where Greater Men Have Fallen: Some time at the end of 2013 we sat and began to plot a course for album number eight. We moved camp to a new rehearsal room and the ideas began to take shape. We felt it was time to try a new studio and engineer so we went to grouse lodge deep in the middle of Ireland and employed Gomez (Cathedral, Angelwitch, Grave Miasma) to come over and work on the new album. The band's idea was, of course, to keep the PRIMORDIAL trademarks but add a more live sound, broader and heavier. In 2014, we stand at the brink of releasing album number eight and, according to Nemtheanga: we feel revitalized, the hunger never left and we are ready for another chapter to be written in our history!

Library Catalog Music Series: Music For Primordial Recollections

By day, InfinitRock is an 18 year old biology student at SUNY Purchase, by
night a fuzzed glitch and fump hip-hop producer. In second grade he was
digesting The RZA and Aphex Twin and has been making instrumentals since
the age of six. As a son to parents from India, he would also hear a lot
of classical indian music around the house and since he could not
understand hindi, voices became instruments rather than a lyrical tool.
His music reflects the conceptualization of sounds, and what makes music
music and the world musical. InfinitiRock draws inspiration from the
everyday, incorporating their sounds into his music. Music for Primordial
Recollection contains a motif of sounds and rhythms that trigger ancient
memories. Ambient layers and interludes featuring field recordings of wind
chimes, children playing, glass breaking, the chewing of raw pasta, the
crumpling of paper bags, and flowing water. The album is an auditory
documentation of the evolution of entropic sound, tamed by the laws of
    rhythm. Everything breathes.

The heady new album, out on Northern Spy Records, expands dramatically on the band's primordial polyrhythms + noise palette to embrace lush electronic psychedelia, enveloping vocal textures, and even unexpected, glittering explosions of pop melodicism.

Following up on the experimental sounds of LP3 and LP4, Ratatat return to their core guitar-driven sound on Magnifique. Combining the bedrock beats and primordial riffs from their first two albums with the sonic experimentation and production prowess of LP3 and LP4, Mike and Evan arrived at a new plateau with Magnifique.

RATATAT recently returned to the stage for the first time in four years to complete a handful of sold-out shows in Tulsa, Denver, Salt Lake City and Las Vegas. RATATAT will also perform at Governor's Ball, Capital Hill Block Party and HARD SUMMER music festivals this summer.

    Nothing For Us Here

Cult Leader are the next evolutionary leap forward for three-quarters of Gaza, arguably one of the best metallic bands of the last decade. After the early 2013 dissolution of the aforementioned band, remaining members Michael Mason, Casey Hansen, and Anthony Lucero were joined by bassist Sam Richards to form this brand new beast.

Nothing For Us Here is a complex crusher as you would expect. Brilliantly heavy, technical musicianship complimented by Anthony Lucero's newfound brutal vocal delivery (previously he played bass in Gaza). All of it coming together as an unconventional tangle of metal/hardcore/punk wreckage. Proving that even in their primordial state, Cult Leader are capable of standing as contemporaries Converge and Coalesce as new monsters of the aggressive music genre.

Man Is Myth (Early Demos) (Pre-Order)

Britain's dirtiest doom metal-band CONAN provide insights into a secret world! Man Is Myth - Early Demos are unheard beasts out of their rehearsal room and studio. It roars and cranks all over, dull distortion drags nerves into the coldest regions of the world. It's no accident that they call themselves Caveman Battle Doom. Man Is Myth - Early Demos is the primordial soup for everything that CONAN stands for. There is nothing that fascinates more than the crudity of underlying ideas of eventual noise-hits. Satsumo revives in its rawness of the demo-version of 2006, Gravity Chasm throbs with booming guitars. The grand finale is the previously unreleased Domed Iron Boss - the cherry on top of the cake.

Thought Forms / Ebsen & The Witch Split LP

Esben's side immediately reaches a fever pitch as 'No Dog' drags itself up from the primordial ooze of Sonic Youth's early years mastery of cacophony and dissonance, underpinned by the volatile rhythmic propulsion of Fugazi or Hoover. The lone voice left unadorned in the eye of the storm comes from bassist and vocalist Rachel Davies, who summons up the fiery catharsis of Chelsea Wolfe or Sharon Van Etten. The trio's other contribution here, 'Butoh', pursues an altogether more tribal path, kicking up a fury and intensity rarely matched this side of the pond these days. Thought Forms find an equally cathartic voice across their four songs, but achieve it by totally different means: dressing their tracks up with the swirling swathes of guitar you'd expect from the dreamier edges of the '80s US lexicon. 'For the Moving Stars' jolts forward from the off with the sort of driving, hypnotic lead lines you'd expect from J Mascis, that is were he armed with Steve Turner's pedal collection. 'Your Bones', meanwhile, is a disarming slow-burner that creeps its way into the back of your mind, erupting from what could have been an early Low cut into an uphill battle against tumbling drums and guitars that crackle like a bonfire on a crisp Autumn night.

    Coliseum Deluxe Reissue

Founded by Louisville musician Ryan Patterson and including Kayhan Vaziri and Carter Wilson, power trio Coliseum have grown to become one of today's quintessential contemporary punk bands. Successfully melding progressive musicianship, hardcore fervor, and vital social awareness into one constantly evolving artistic vision.

Over the last decade Coliseum have released music on a host of labels including; Temporary Residence, Relapse, Level Plane, Auxiliary (Ryan's own label), and even Deathwish ("True Quiet / Last Wave" 2009).

And now, 2014 brings Coliseum and Deathwish together again as their permanent label home. "We have a long and storied history with Deathwish and their family of bands," says Patterson. "Not only did we work with the label on the 'True Quiet' 7", we've toured around the world with Deathwish bands, released a split with Doomriders early on, and I've been fortunate enough to design a number of Deathwish releases. While Coliseum officially joining the label's roster is a new chapter for us, it feels like a homecoming."

To celebrate Coliseum's 10th anniversary, we are proud to present the "Coliseum" Deluxe Reissue: A twenty song collection featuring their classic self titled debut album (out of print since 2006) paired with eight essential bonus tracks from their primordial years. Originally recorded by Jason Loewenstein of Sebadoh and now fully remixed by Joel Grind of Toxic Holocaust, the release also features new deluxe packaging, insightful liner notes, and cover artwork by John Baizley of Baroness.

    It Came From N.Y.C.

    Remastered By Guitarist J. Yuenger

    Features Original Artwork

    Includes 108 Page Book

Years before Beavis and Butt-head headbanged "Thunder
Kiss '65" and "More Human than Human" into the
eternal rock video canon, there was primordial White
    Zombie-a quintessential, diabolically loud byproduct
of Manhattan's underground rock scene, born of artschool
    rendezvous and squalid apartment circumstance.
It Came from N.Y.C. is the most exhaustive attempt so
far to document the band's wondrously ugly birth. Get
reintroduced to White Zombie as New York noise-rock,
a grotesque creation that clawed and threatened its way to
    crossover metal glory.

    Numero resurrects White Zombie's
eternally out-of-print early EPs and LPs as It Came From
N.Y.C. Spread across five LPs , all
39 tracks have been remastered by guitarist J. Yuenger
and packaged alongside the original lurid artwork. The
    accompanying 108-page book painstakingly documents
    White Zombie's punishing progression through
scores of unpublished photos, period discography, a
T-shirtography, and tales from the terrifying early years
that stitch together the sordid story of a band whose true
power eclipsed its mainstream heyday. White Zombie lives.

    Screaming Life/Fopp

From the depths of the Sub Pop archives comes a reissue of
Soundgarden's thunderous opening salvo, Screaming Life, plus bonus
tracks from the Fopp EP and Sub Pop 200 compilation. This reissue
marks the first time these tracks will be available digitally, and their first
appearance on vinyl since the original, late-80s pressings (notwithstanding
a long-gone, late-'90s repress of Screaming Life). All tracks have been
remastered by Seattle studio wizard and producer of the original Screaming
Life and Sub Pop 200 sessions, Jack Endino, who had this to say about
    it:

"Ah, Screaming Life, Soundgarden's debut, and one of the first real
records I made for anyone outside my own band. I already knew
Soundgarden pretty well, since they and Skin Yard had shared the stage
many times in Seattle's tiny club scene circa 1985-1986. Soon after
opening Reciprocal Recording in July 1986, there I was with Soundgarden,
trying to make the most of our eight tracks. Somehow, we found room
for all of Matt Cameron's 'bonus tubs,' Hiro's primordial Fender bass,
and a whopping four tracks to share between Kim Thayil's mad guitar
psychedelia and Chris Cornell's still-expanding voice. 'Nothing To Say'
was the song that made us all look at each other and go, 'uh, holy crap,
    how did we do this?'

Stuff started happening. A&M came calling. SST agreed to put out
their next record. But Soundgarden was not finished with Sub Pop. They
contributed 'Sub Pop Rock City,' about Seattle's then-rising 'grunge'
scene, to the Sub Pop 200 comp; and they threw everyone a curveball
with Steve Fisk-produced Ohio Players and Green River covers on the
    Fopp EP.

The glorious vistas of a major label future awaited them. To quote Kim
from an old interview, 'It was karma, it was dogma, it was dog breath.'"

    Ape School (Discontinued) (On Sale)

Michael Johnson arrived in Philadelphia a swamp-ape from the Florida panhandle to lead music technology studies at a downtown arts university. Instead, he discovered in its hallowed halls the derelict crown-jewel of archaic analog electronics with which he would forge his image of the Ape School. Armed with the Moog Modular synthesizer he helped revive-- just the fourth born and installed by the hands of Robert Moog 40 years earlier in 1965-- Johnson conjures original songs from beyond his prior tenures in Kurt Heasley's Lilys, and Sub Pop's Holopaw, using the Modular to weave lush motorik dreamsound throughout dynamic instrumentation and his distinct croon.

This second one-man-does-all album by Johnson--the first to use the animistic moniker-- marries primitive songs with incorporeal sound: glamatic pop explorations, navigated by studio light, coalesced over time, wine, fallouts, and Rundgren-style self-control.

From the resounding onset of Wail to God, to the song's oscillator outro barely two minutes later, the tonal breadth and sonic fluidity of Ape School is clear. A song like Did What I Did flirts with pop sensibility, but coheres in subtle feedback when repetition would normally devolve it to redundance. Elsewhere, as on My Intention and Deathstomp, Johnson commits to full mechanical shredding and focused romps of analog rock glory awash in system buzz. Other, more spacious moments like That's OK, It's Over, and The Underground reveal the songs' subtle instrumental basis, and bare the accidentally clever, eloquent lyrics of his elastic tenor.

Mixed in Jamaican Brooklyn with Michael Pecchio in a bath of reverb, delay, tape echo, smoke, mirrors, orange juice, and cayenne pepper, Ape School has finally congealed. Upon graduation from Primate U, this album, initially intended for release by co-conspirator Alfred Daedelus Darlington, finds a home at Ninja Tune's Counter Records.

With a band of student human musicians rescued from the confines of musical education, Ape School has opened its doors to limited faculty enrollment. Composed of previous cohorts in Lilys, Holopaw, Human Television, and beyond, the live Ape School incarnation takes one monkey's primordial creations on summer vacation to civilization. Evidently basted nightly.

    Refulgo

In 2000 a deep love for Bardo Pond provided the inspiration to establish Three Lobed Recordings. Fourteen years later, Bardo Pond and Three Lobed Recordings are proud to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the band's initial releases with Refulgo, an epic double LP collection of the band's earliest 7" singles, split 7" tracks, and compilation appearances. This collection, the first of a series, compiles these essential Bardo Pond tracks in a manner to augment their enjoyment by long time fans while also introducing this material to those who do not yet possess an encyclopedic knowledge of these modern psych rock pioneers. The material presented on Refulgo all comes from long out-of-print releases (which have also been largely unavailable digitally) and the entire content has been remastered. It has never sounded better. Bardo Pond has stood alongside psych rock peers yet unmistakably alone over the course of the twenty-plus years as a band. While their catalog is vast and spans a virtual wheelbarrow-load of albums, singles, splits and compilations, what is perhaps most remarkable is just how quickly as a band they developed their unique sound and voice. Refulgo presents as compelling an argument for that thesis as its two LPs worth of music present a band whose collective vision emerged effectively fully formed. Their first 7", "Die Easy" / "Apple Eye" (first released on Compulsiv in January of 1994) is a primordial ooze of swampy, sludgey psych blues that clearly demonstrated the essential DNA that has become Bardo Pond's multi-decade calling card. Track those building blocks through the subsequent releases and the sound is there in full bloom quickly, really by "New Drunks," but really stretches out in full within the twenty-minute triumphant, genre-defining victory lap which is "Sangh Seriatim" (first released on Drunken Fish's "Harmony of the Spheres" compilation in November of 1996). The temporal gap between the tracks from that first single, the first two presented on Refulgo, and "Sangh Seriatim," the compilation's concluding track, is shockingly small at less than three years. Most bands never fully realize their potential; this compilation demonstrates that Bardo Pond did it with remarkable speed as well as a high degree of maturity.

Something sinister is looming in the mist - a ghastly three-headed apparition, equal parts riffage & rancour and fuelled by a steady diet of garage rock 7-inches played at 33RPM and horror movies watched at 5AM, the primeval force of Satan's Satyrs is returned to the earth to lay waste to everything in its path.

Rising from the primordial ooze of Herndon, Virginia Satan's Satyrs hit the metal underground like a tidal wave of sulphur with their debut proper, 2012's Wild Beyond Belief. This almighty assault, almost entirely the work of chief Satyr Clayton Burgess, was a harrowing blast of fuzz-drenched aggro - a clash of Venom-esque metalpunk squalor and in-the-red garage-rock dementia.

With Jarrett Nettnin soon joining the fray on guitar and Stephen Fairfield on drums, the power-trio were soon invited by Electric Wizard to 2013's Roadburn Festival, which they graced with two scorching sets, one being entirely comprised of cuts by their heinous heroes Blue Cheer. Yet the three-piece, despite being barely into their twenties, weren't about to rest on their laurels. What's more, the result of their onward march into grisly pastures new is the more mature yet no less malicious new opus, 'Die Screaming' which sees it's European release via Bad Omen Records in 2014.

This time around, the band set about expanding their sound, maintaining their trash-obsessed aesthetic whilst sharpening their songcraft to produce an album possessed of both mighty heaviosity and incisive hooks. Bolstered by roaring Hammond and percussive ornamentation that bring still more Hammer Horror atmosphere to the fray, 'Die Screaming' transcends the band's Black Sabbath, Stooges and Black Flag influences to arrive at a relentlessly gory and gung-ho assault on the senses. One minute, this terror-troupe are dishing out the rotten rock n'roll of 'One By One (They Die) and Curse Of The Corpse, which stalk the Earth like the reanimated corpses of Budgie and Blue Oyster Cult records past. The next, on the jaw-dropping title-track, they're throwing Death SS, the Alice Cooper of Sick Things and Scott Reagers-era Saint Vitus into a bubbling cauldron and standing well back. Yet at all times Satan's Satyrs' gonzo attack is authentically red in both tooth and claw.

Rising high above the overkill of self-styled occult rock that lurks in the underground at present. Satan's Satyrs are blazing a trail through a nightmarish world of battered VHS videos, overheated ampstacks and dog-eared vinyl, and are a band fit to set the pulse of any self-respecting trash connoisseur racing. With 'Die Screaming', they're set to carry out the Devil's bidding across the globe with uniquely sordid and salacious style.

Chet Baker & Strings (Pure Pleasure)

This release offers a unique glimpse of a young Chet Baker in a quintet setting, complemented by a nine-piece string section. Utilizing the uniquely modern arrangements of Johnny Mandel, Marty Paich, Jack Montrose, and Shorty Rogers, this interaction of 'West Coast cool' with primordial elevator music escapes many - if not indeed all - of the potential sonic pitfalls such a marriage might suggest. In the truest sense of the word augmentation, the string arrangements provide the desired opulence sans the heavy-handed or syrupy residual effects. Perhaps most inspiring about this outing is the success with which Baker and crew are able to thrive in this environment, providing subtle insight into the quintet's ability to simultaneously adapt and explore. Love Walked In incorporates a trademark volley of interaction between Baker and Sims. Love contains what is arguably the most successful implementation of the string section, as well as some stellar soloing by Freeman. In fact, his contributions to this particular recording rank among his finest with Baker and company. The same enthusiasm can likewise be applied to A Little Duet for Zoot and Chet. Not only are Sims and Baker in top flight, but the string arrangement swings irresistibly as well. The easygoing and otherwise winding strings support the cool bop like a kite in a March breeze - light, airy, and conspicuous only in altitude.

Tracks A 7 & 8 and B 7 are bonus tracks not on original release.

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Black Moon Spell

King Tuff's new record is called Black Moon Spell.

It was produced and recorded by Bobby Harlow at Studio B in Los Angeles, California,
in the hot winter of 2014.

No one involved was prepared to make a record, but an invisible hand pushed them
to do it. Perhaps it was God or that special someone we all know and love called The
    Devil.

God and The Devil actually have very similar interests. They both love electric guitars
and they both want you to listen to Black Moon Spell and freak the fuck out.

There were many strange occurrences during the recording session- Dracula landlords,
flashes of mysterious light, haunted microphones, songs that mixed themselves,
demonic vortexes swirling in coffee cups, etc.

Under the Black Moon Spell you may experience euphoria, demented visions, wet
dreams, bouts of backwards laughter, and dazed confusion resulting in primordial
    dancing.

Fire played a very important role in the making of this album. King Tuff loves fire.
For some reason, no one can really explain how the Black Moon Spell came to be.
It just appeared one day and demanded heavy rock music and meatball subs.
Backwards messages may be found on this record.

Los Angeles, full of its screaming coyotes and creeping helicopters, surely slathered
its sexy, twisted, hairy, polluted spirit all over Black Moon Spell. The Sunset Strip
shat itself when it heard all these guitar solos.

Can you feel the Black Moon Spell creeping up the back of yr neck yet?

King Tuff would prefer not to tell you the full story of making this record because
its long and crazy and you wouldn't believe him anyway. Also, I am King Tuff.

Magic Jake, who played bass and is beautiful like sunshine, would like to take this
moment to give you a hug and invite you to a tanning party on a beach of your choice.

Old Gary, who plays drums and has the most glorious cackle, would like to take this
moment to crack a cold one with you and invite you to watch the old ballgame with
    him.

Old Gary was out watching the old ballgame, so a wild critter named Ty Segall played
drums on the song "Black Moon Spell". Ty enjoys speaking in a goblin voice in his
    spare time.

Night fell on Studio B. A Tarot card leapt from the deck and said, "No human
judgement is of any value here." King Tuff agreed.

Sub Pop first discovered King Tuff curled up in his palace in Vermont. It was basically
a shit hut made of moss, mud, and glimmering stones hidden near the graveyard,
and it was guarded by beautiful wild bullfrogs with silver fangs and baseball bats.

Punx, Squares, Skaters, Farmers, Bartenders, Grandparents, Stoners, Carpenters,
Hobos, Heshers, Babes, Babies, Plumbers, Strippers, Art Teachers, Teenagers, Townies,
Moms, Dads, Truck Drivers, and Witches will all love this record.

Every song on Black Moon Spell was written without giving a shining fuck about
    nothing.

Listen to Black Moon Spell, turn yr volume knob up to 666, put yr lover in a 69,
and let yr inner grinagog rear it's wicked, unwashed, smiling snake head.

    Listen to Black Moon Spell and give yr ears what they've been begging for all year;
a heavily weird, heavenly dark, hysterically magical Rock & Roll Sexperience.

ps. the only part of this story that isn't true is the part about the shit hut. I actually
was living at my parents' house when I was discovered. Love, KT

    Balmorhea

...an exemplary experiment in restraint, lush with

    - The ONION / A.V. CLUB

Balmorhea flashes brilliance only to highlight a
slow-burning constancy that's at the core of one
of the year's early slow wonders.
    - PITCHFORK

For the past eight years the duo of Rob Lowe and Michael Muller have nurtured and refined
their creative partnership as the core members of the band Balmorhea. Though their first
album on Western Vinyl Rivers Arms (2008) garnered some remarkable press, their
self-titled debut, recorded in 2006 and released in 2007 best captures the duo's unique
magic as it first blossomed. With no label, distributor, manager, publicist, or booking agent
the duo quietly self-released their first recordings and started playing live shows. Now,
seven years later Western Vinyl is honored to have the opportunity reissue the band's
self-titled album, and make it available on vinyl for the first time ever.

In preparation for this special reissue, the audio was lovingly remastered, drawing out
even more of the nuances magnifying the sounds of Muller and Lowe's fingers on the
instruments, and teasing out the textures that set these recordings apart from the rest of
their catalog. Simple and sincere, these songs and ambient sounds the duo captured in
these recordings are strangely inviting. Throughout the album the distant sounds of Texas
grackles, the warm summer rain, the steady rhythm of crickets chirping, and creaking
wooden stools, all seeping in to cradle the notes in a restrained din of primordial wonder.

It's hard to imagine Western Vinyl without Balmorhea. After our fateful meeting in 2007,
we forged a deep and lasting relationship we're all grateful for. We met at an Austin performance on the eve of their first US tour in support of their recently self-released debut
album. Their show that night was one of the most powerful performances I'd ever seen,
and as I looked around the room, it was apparent that I wasn't alone. With the help of a
cellist the group briefly transformed the dingy lounge into a vibrant pulsing cell. I had
experienced deeply moving shows before, but the ecstatic emotions they conjured were
new to me. Calling it electrifying, might sound clichÉ, but as the hair on my arms and legs
stood at attention, my eyes squinted a bit with concentration, and my head cocked to the
right, the electricity that passed over me felt very real. Over the next few years I had the
pleasure of experiencing dozens of Balmorhea shows, each with a slightly different story
to tell. - Brian Sampson, Western Vinyl

    Fated

A luscious, elegant, electronic work - Los Angeles Times

    Hip-hop instrumentals and electronic sketches;
    pristine and prim - FACT

    Gorgeously haunted - Pitchfork

We seek the new because of the numbness. If you listen to enough
music, you're familiar with the feeling. Sounds get recycled so often
that they can seem like geometric configurations organized via Wav
files. Trends get time-stamped faster than a triplicate trap hi-hat.

The most rare records emerge outside of any clearly delineated orbit.
They're solitary visions that supply their own rhythm and arsenal.
Music that reverberates through heart, brain, and spine. This is Nosaj
    Thing's third album, Fated.

"I just tried to escape really, and escape even what's going on in the
music world," says Nosaj Thing, the LA producer born Jason Chung. "It
just felt so suffocating in a way. I just wanted to do my own thing."

It's been six years since Nosaj Thing emerged among the vanguard of
Low End Theory-affiliated producers. His debut Drift created 31st
century tones and chromatic textures so sleek that they inspired
    innumerable Soundcloud imitators.

None could match its moody iridescence, faded sadness and funky
swing. Bach collided with Boards of Canada. Spaceships came
equipped with rear view mirrors and a booming system bumping
G-Funk and warped soul. Pitchfork called it "gorgeously haunted."
Resident Advisor said it "exists in its own dimension and feeds off its
own exhaust: full of alien choirs, conquered computers, and refracting
    stained-glass light."

Fated exists in this same alternate dimension, but further out. If
comparisons previously existed with other artists within the LA beat
scene, Nosaj has rendered them baseless. His second album on
Innovative Leisure (after 2013's Home) seeks celestial escape through
    streamlining.

"The last record took out so much of me. I just wanted to go back to
simplifying and overthinking so much. It was a battle," Nosaj says.
"The soul of a song, the essence of a song-whatever you want to call
    it-should be simple."

By stripping away all but what's really necessary, the sounds harness
an unusual directness. Guest appearances are rare, save for vocals
from Whoarei on "Don't Mind Me," and Chicago rap phenomenon,
Chance the Rapper. The latter gravely spits on "Cold Stares," invoking
terminal fevers, empty beds, devil's whispers, and insomniac fears.

If comparisons crop up, Fated has most in common with records like
Burial's Untrue or Dilla's Donuts. Requiems that canvass the shadowy
hinterlands between life and death, darkness and light, loneliness and
love. Eternal themes re-imagined in ingenious fashion.

"The album name came from all these coincidences that just kept on
happening to me," Nosaj says. "Specific interaction with specific
people in unexpected places. A perpetual feeling of dÉjà vu."

It's foundation rests on that intangible thing that some call fate or
primordial feeling. Numbness receding, old emotions flooding back,
un-tampered visions. Fated is what you can't explain, so it's best to
    just listen.

    Orff: Carmina Burana (Speakers Corner)

Sung by world renowned soloists and conducted by the legendary Eugen Jochum, this recording of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana was authorised by the composer himself. It follows, therefore, that the present recording met with the high requirements of the composer himself and so represents an unusual collector's item. Orff intended not just to copy the medieval lyrics but to express the mood of that era. His highly rhythmic compositional style reflects the archaic character of the vocal line. The listener experiences not only the vital primordial pulse of the music in this thrilling interpretation but also the mystery of Fate through the tender lyrical passages.

Orff's homage to wine, women and song of the Middle Ages, closely bound up with spring and love, is supported by balanced and precise sound technology. The listener is spirited away to the musical world of Carmina Burana by this recording.

Recording: October 1967 at the Ufa Studio, Berlin by Klaus Scheibe / Production: Dr. Hans Hirsch

    Ices

Ices is a celebration of flight, levity, and the conviction that you can leave earth. You take wing in an airplane, you go to real places when you dream, you have out-of-body experiences, you get high, you lose yourself in someone else.

When we started work on these songs, I was beginning a gradual move to California, constantly traveling back and forth from New York. I was experimenting. I was falling in love. Our studio in the Hudson Valley was full of electronics and computers and the sounds of future ships sailing through the vastness of space, and I sometimes forgot where I was. The first songs we wrote were called flying 1, then flying 2, and so on, which eventually evolved into songs on the album. Flight became a metaphor for the ignition of the imagination. The process created a lightness in me, a freedom and positive energy that I'd never before felt or explored.

This recording session became a two year music and spiritual retreat with my psychic twin brother, Eliot. A private journey during which we abandoned old habits and familiar sounds. We got really geeky and experimented in our studio. We obsessed over sympathetic magic, Ancient Aliens, and the NBA. We allowed everything we loved to find its way in: Persian percussion, hip-hop beats, lo-fi, hi-fi, Pakistani pop, Link Wray, Jason Pierce, gospel, dub. We developed new systems; we worked with synthesis, software, and samples; we became producers. The Hudson Valley was home base, but I wanted to keep flying. I wrote songs in California, recorded vocals in Atlanta, and worked with Clams Casino in Brooklyn. For the first time, Lia Ices felt like an inclusive project with its own identity, not just a name.

Ices as a whole is devoted to these certainties. While we have evolved, we are still animals. We respond to planets, patterns, and cycles. We require the sounds of our origins. We live in the future but stay bound to the primitive and primordial. We will always want tribe, we will always want rhythm, we will always need music to guide us into our deepest sense of what it means to be human. So we hear sounds from all over the planet in this album. We devour so much music, and with this album we allowed ourselves to claim bits from all of it.
