Pretty In BlackFirst 1.000 copies are pressed on pink / black marbled vinyl!
The second full-length album of Danish Fifties/Psych Pop duo The Raveonettes was released in 2005. On Pretty In Black, Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo abandoned the strict recording rules the band laid upon themselves on their preceding efforts (including limiting the amount of different chords in one song, keeping an entire album in one tuning - which was in fact B Flat Major for The Chain Gang Of Love) and keeping song running times under three minutes. Instead, the group further expand on their signature sound of Fifties inspired Rockabilly Noise Pop with the eerie feel of a thriller movie soundtrack.
Special appearances on this album are made by Maureen Tucker of Velvet Underground on drums, Martin Rev on drum machine and Ronnie Spector, also known as Veronica Bennett of the fabulous Ronettes on backup vocals.1. The Heavens

Hole's debut album originally released by Caroline in 1991 was produced by Kim Gordon and Gumball front man Don Fleming. Pretty On The Inside was named album of the year by The Village Voice and the only single released, Teenage Whore, entered the UK indie charts at number one. Graphic lyrics, distorted guitar riffs, screaming vocals, and messy punk ethics helped the album sell over 600,000 copies worldwide and established Courtney Love's long running cult status.1. Only In DreamsOn several levels, Dum Dum Girls second full length Only in Dreams is a great leap forward for a gifted songwriter and an equally gifted band. It's heavy, deeply personal stuff and surely unprecedented for this style of music. The first record was basically the first songs I'd ever written, says band-leader Dee Dee, and I was thinking nostalgically about being a teenager. This record, it was pretty much impossible not to write about very recent, very real things.
Very real things indeed: Dee Dee wrote Hold Your Hand immediately after her mother (the pretty lady on the cover of both the Dum Dum Girls' self-titled 2009 debut EP and their 2010 debut album I Will Be) was diagnosed with what turned out to be a fatal illness, and it's one of several songs on Only in Dreams that unsparingly trace her mom's passing. Other songs spell out the emotional toll of separation from one's lover, something Dee Dee had to deal with while she and her husband (Brandon Welchez of the acclaimed noise-pop band Crocodiles) pursued their own tour schedules.
Only in Dreams more than fulfills the promise of 2011s acclaimed and fast-selling He Gets Me High EP. It retains Dum Dum Girls' signature blend of the girl-gang eyeliner punk of the Shangri-Las, the trashy propulsion of the Cramps, and the moody atmospherics of Mazzy Star, but for the first time, all four Dum Dum Girls play and sing on the album. Now the harmonies have more depth, Jules plays her own distinctive guitar leads, and the Bambi (bass)/Sandy (drums) rhythm section powers the music like a vintage V-8 engine. Best of all, tons of time on the road, including two massively successful headlining tours, have molded Dum Dum Girls into a very formidable rock & roll band, giving the music an undeniable force.
And now that power and glory is showcased by full-on studio production, while I Will Be was recorded at home and modestly spiffed up in a studio by legendary pop maestro Richard Gottehrer (Blondie, Go-Go's), Only in Dreams was recorded at Josh Homme's Pink Duck Studios, and Gottehrer again produced, this time with Sune Rose Wagner from the Raveonettes.
Only in Dreams represents a musical evolution for Dum Dum Girls and a personal one for Dee Dee, and that's no coincidence. I'm for real, she says. We all are. I'm really passionate about this, it's all I know. And maybe we've just grown up a bit, or grown out a bit. There's some weight to what we do, and a pure intent, and I think that comes across on this album.1. Always Looking

Whether it's Spinal Tap gloriously losing the plot, the escapades of Tenacious D getting them into trouble, or the phenomenon that is Dethklok tearing up the album charts, comedy and heavy music have long made for great bedfellows. Jim Breuer is a man who understands this, and with Songs From The Garage, his first full-length with longtime backing band The Regulators, he delivers both in his inimitable style. "I basically want the crowd to have a blast, and I write what I feel that I would love if I was in the crowd. So, going into the record the music had to be killer and have great hooks, that was most important, and I wanted to balance that with something that's funny," he enthuses. "I wanted to bring the smile back to hard rock that has a nice punch to it - and in doing so hopefully bridge the gap so my generation and their kids will come see this live together!"
In realizing this, Breuer has delivered a record that is pure, unadulterated fun, and yes, it rocks. From crunchy opening romp "Thrash" through the swaggering "Who Better Than Us?" to the gloriously deranged excitement suffusing "Sugar Rush", his exuberance is infectious, and he challenges you to keep your ass from shaking and the corners of your mouth twitching while it thunders from the speakers. Throughout, his influences bleed through, comfortably blurring the line between hard rock and metal while every anthemic chorus lodges irrevocably in the hippocampus. While a great many 'comedy rock' records are ultimately pretty throwaway and last as long as the joke stays funny, this is not the case with Songs From The Garage. True to his game plan, Breuer has made great songs, ones that persistently draw a smile and will fit comfortably when shuffled among the likes of Megadeth, AC/DC, Judas Priest and more contemporary bands, such as Avenged Sevenfold and Halestorm.
Having finally made the album that has been burning to get out of him since his teens, Breuer couldn't be happier with the result. Though he has fulfilled one rock and roll dream with its completion, it certainly does not mean he's about to kick back and leave it at that. "I plan on making great, funny videos for every song and have videos up during the concerts. I want pure entertainment when you come see this live, and now my rock and roll dream is to play this not only here in America, but anywhere else in the world that will accept it! I'm taking it one day at a time, living the dream."1. Thrash

Dream A Little DreamAt the time of Dream a Little Dream's release, the von Trapp family was more newsworthy than it had been in a while: The Sound of Music Live!, a television adaptation of Rodgers & Hammerstein's musical, was a ratings success when it aired in December 2013. More poignantly, Maria von Trapp, the last surviving member of the original Trapp Family Singers, passed in February 2014 at age 99.
On this collaboration with Pink Martini, Sofie, Melanie, Amanda, and August von Trapp -- the great-grandchildren of the von Trapps immortalized in The Sound of Music -- continue the family tradition with beautifully harmonized versions of songs ranging from Johannes Brahms' In Stiller Nacht to the national anthem of Rwanda, Rwanda Nziza. Working with Pink Martini was an inspired choice, as they almost always bring out the best in their collaborators -- along with the unexpected, like Kuroneko No Tango, a version of the Italian song Black Cat Tango inspired by Japanese singer Osamu Minagawa's 1969 rendition. The group sounds just as natural backing the von Trapps as they do working with their usual vocalists, and Dream a Little Dream bears the same mix of kitsch and sublime beauty as one of Pink Martini's own albums. Die Dorfmusik sounds like it could have strolled in from The Lawrence Welk Show, while the version of ABBA's Fernando sounds like it came from a Swedish Carnaval parade thanks to the involvement of the Lions of Batucada.
The inevitable Sound of Music inclusions are handled in a similarly playful fashion, with Wayne Newton taking the lead on The Lonely Goatherd and Charmian Carr (who portrayed Liesl in the film of the musical) joining the von Trapps for a sweet version of Edelweiss that recalls Pink Martini's work with Phyllis Diller on their previous album, Get Happy. The von Trapps balance Dream a Little Dream's quaint and quirky moments with more contemporary-sounding tracks, three of which were penned by August. Storm and Friend recall '60s folk in their acoustic earnestness, and the Chieftains give the closing track, Thunder, a pretty, if somewhat out of place, Celtic twist. As is often the case with Pink Martini's albums, the most intimate moments here are among the best.
A softer-than-soft rendition of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang's Hushabye Mountain captures the exquisite poignancy of vintage children's music, while the delicate Le Premier Bonheur du Jour and a starlit version of the album's title track cast a similar spell. Ultimately, Dream a Little Dream is an entertaining blend of both parties' strengths, showcasing Pink Martini's globetrotting pop and introducing the next generation of von Trapp music.1. Storm

"This is all slabs of sound, rhythm and screaming/testifying. What more do you need? In a way, it was a reaction against Punk (and just about any other music you can think of), and the conservative notion that 3 chords were somehow necessary. I used to deny it vehemently at the time, but No Wave (I "hated" that scene too, for some reason I can't remember now) played a big role as the germ from which this music grew, along with The Stooges and Throbbing Gristle, of course. I wanted Swans to be "heavier" though - I wanted the music to obliterate - why, I don't remember! I think it just felt good. Live, we used two basses (playing utterly unmusical chords that were stabbed and left to sustain or sometimes hit in staccato or opposing rhythms), drums, a "percussionist" that slammed down on a metal table with a metal strap, crude cassette loops of various sounds/noises (usually some kind of undefined ROAR), and Norman Westberg's glorious sustained and screaming guitar chords. It was pretty elating to play live - for us. If 100 people showed up (which would have been a huge audience at the time - 20 was more the average), 80 were guaranteed to leave by the second song. Somehow that tension - contempt or indifference from the audience - was nourishing, so we kept going.
Here's some music I was listening to at the time: Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV, The Stooges, Brian Eno, Teenage Jesus And The Jerks, DNA, The Contortions, Glenn Branca, Black Flag, early Pink Floyd, This Heat, Kraftwerk, The Germs, Cabaret Voltaire, Can, Public Image LTD., SPK "

New SkinNew Skin is the debut album of CRX a new project for STROKES lead guitarist Nick Valensi. The urge to begin a new project came from a primal place for Valensi, he just wanted to play. I was at a place where I got really hungry to perform in front of audiences, and do things a little more simply, Valensi says. The Strokes don't play that often anymore, and when we do it's awesome, but it got to the point where I needed to balance that out with a project I could take on tour whenever I wanted to. And the idea of playing clubs again was really exciting to me. But Valensi couldn't start playing until he'd written some songs, and he realized he'd have to finally embrace an aspect of performing he'd resisted up until that point -- singing. Last summer, he just dug in, grabbing whatever spare time he had to record demos on his laptop at home. It was a learning process, says Valensi. It took me some time to figure out how my voice sounds most natural, and to think about what I wanted to say.
As the songs progressed, Valensi invited a few trusted musician friends to join him and to contribute as songwriters. In addition to Valensi on guitar and vocals, CRX includes bassist Jon Safley, keyboardist/vocalist Richie Follin, drummer Ralph Alexander, and guitarist Darian Zahedi. Once we were all in a room together, it got collaborative pretty quickly, Valensi says, noting that about half of New Skin s ten tracks are co-writes with the band.
After demoing several songs, Valensi reached out to Queens of the Stone-Age's Josh Homme, for feedback on the tracks and advice regarding producers who might be right for the band. It quickly became apparent that there was no better person for the job than Homme himself. He was really enthusiastic about the demos, says Valensi. There were even specific things he loved from the demos so much that we ended up including them on the album, which was very much a Josh decision.
New Skin was recorded at Homme's Pink Duck Studios in Burbank, with work wrapping up in early 2016. And even as this year marks the fifteenth anniversary of The Strokes first LP, it represents the beginning of a promising new chapter for Valensi. One of the coolest things for me is that I began making this record as a vehicle to get onstage, he says, but along the way, it started to feel like we were working on something more special than that. I'm excited to be singing and having a lot of fun with it, and I'm really enjoying the feeling of having to work hard to win people over. It's like being a kid again - like everything is new and kind of scary but irresistibly fun, too.1. Ways to Fake It
