Ranked 419/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time

Reissued On Heavyweight 180 Gram Vinyl In Celebration Of The Album's 20th Anniversary

Portishead's album debut is a brilliant, surprisingly natural synthesis of claustrophobic spy soundtracks, dark breakbeats inspired by frontman Geoff Barrow's love of hip-hop, and a vocalist (Beth Gibbons) in the classic confessional singer/songwriter mold.Better than any album before it, Dummy merged the pinpoint-precise productions of the dance world with pop hallmarks like great songwriting and excellent vocal performances.

    Third

Third is the first studio album from Portishead in over ten years so it's about as highly anticipated as it gets! The album incorporates a lot of samples and synthesizers and drum tracks meld seamlessly with violins and pianos. Haunting, emotional, moody, raw and modern, Third is an incredible record.

Portishead was formed in Bristol, U.K. in 1991 by Geoff Barrow, Beth Gibbons and Adrian Utley. After releasing a short film entitled To Kill A Dead Man and its accompanying music, they were signed to a record deal with Go! Beat Records.

Portisheads first album, Dummy, was released in 1994 and the first single was Numb. The album was successful in both Europe and the United States (where it sold more than 150,000 copies even before the band toured there). Dummy spawned two hit singles, Glory Box and Sour Times, and went on to win the prestigious Mercury Music Prize in 1995. After their initial success, Portishead withdrew from the spotlight for three years until their second and self titled album, Portishead, was released in 1997. The albums sound differed from Dummy, the main differences being that much of the music was composed and played by the band, not sampled from records, and had a grainy, harsher sound. Three singles, Cowboys, Over and All Mine were released, the latter achieving a Top 10 placing in the U.K. In 1997, the band performed a one-off show with strings by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra at Roseland Ballroom in New York. A live album primarily featuring these new orchestral arrangements of the groups songs was released in 1998. For the next few years, the band members concentrated on solo and other pursuits, until in February 2005, the band appeared live for the first time in seven years at the Tsunami Benefit Concert in Bristol.

    Opium

It was in 1996 that Jay-Jay Johanson, a young man from a cold climate, fascinated by the Bristol sound they called trip-hop and Portishead in particular, first tapped delicately on our eardrums. In only a few songs he revealed a family tree that spread its roots far and wide: on one branch Chet Baker and Lee Hazelwood, on the other John Coltrane with Johnny Hartman, and in between a whole army of jazz or symphonic recordings sampled from everywhere imaginable. Almost 20 years later he has returned with an incredible new album called Opium. It contains the very essence of Johanson's music: an ease with inventing melodies, a voice that gently caresses, and the jacked up, heady rhythms that lift and carry the songs. From the peaceful harmonica opening of Drowsy / Too Young To Say Good Night to the smoke-wreathed love song I Don't Know Much About Loving, via titles with a sporadic and light groove (NDE, Alone Too Long), Opium is a courageous offering. Johanson opens his heart with fearlessness and modesty, gracefully lowering his guard and evoking the questions that torment men of his age: love, solitude, fatherhood, immaturity. The songwriting is unerving, the words have a suppressed poetry. This new Jay-Jay Johanson is the work of a guy who has survived the avalanches, who is no longer looking for answers and is content to sketch out the perspectives in as many songs. Some titles are serious (Harakiri), but others immediately take up the reins casting a more gentle, peaceful light, like Scarecrow, a collaboration with Robin Guthrie that would not have sounded out of place on a Cocteau Twins album, or of the strange positivity of Be Yourself or I Love Him So. The strength of Opium is that it asks questions that don't necessarily have an answer; it offers a collection of songs freed from any certitude but which convince through their modesty, through their precision. In short, Jay-Jay Johanson at his best.

    Colored Vinyl

Portishead's Adrian Utley brings together an orchestra of electric guitar players to interpret Terry Riley's 'In C.' Written in 1964, 'In C' is one of the most influential pieces of music from the 20th Century, it established minimalism as a music genre. In C's simple musical rules - 53 musical phrases in C and no duration - allow for infinite variations. Utley's impressive Guitar Orchestra is augmented by organs and a clarinet making for a mesmeric sound experience. The Guitar Orchestra consists of 24 musicians from Bristol: 19 guitarists including John Parish (PJ Harvey), Thought Forms, and Jim Barr (Portishead live band); 4 organs and a bass clarinet. The effect is an organic musical experience very much created in front of the audience both fragile and thunderingly uplifting. Invada Records will release this specially recorded live version of 'In C' by Adrian Utley's Guitar Orchestra on 1st October. The album was recorded live at St Georges Hall, Bristol, one of Britain's leading concert halls which is known for its astounding acoustics and unique atmosphere. The core members of the orchestra will tour later in the year augmented by musicians from the countries they visit including England, France and Poland.

Can was founded in 1968 by Irmin Schmidt, Holger Czukay, Michael Karoli and Jaki Liebezeit who formed a group which would utilize and transcend all boundaries of ethnic, electronic experimental and modern classical music.

Monster Movie, Can's debut album was originally recorded and released in 1969. Following her self-titled debut in 2013, TORRES pushes herself to even noisier extremes on Sprinter, a punishing self-examination of epic spiritual and musical proportions. Scott escaped the confines of her churning mind in order to find herself by recording Sprinter in the market town of Bridport in Dorset, England; and then at the Bristol studio of Portishead's Adrian Adrian Utley. Personal Computer

Silicon is the new project from New Zealand via Hawaii multi-instrumentalist Kody Nielson. Personal Computer, the debut album, is a seductive electronic pop record that pits Nielson's brilliant soul, funk and disco influenced songwriting against a backdrop of extra-terrestrial noir sonics, calling to mind the varied likes of Flying Lotus, Panda Bear and Portishead in the process, as well as that of Unknown Mortal Orchestra - the project of Nielson's brother and former band-mate in The Mint Chicks. At the heart of Nielson's noir-electronica is a questioning of how the natural can ever again match the arousing constellation of this blissful synthetic. The album is bombastic and gripping, yet consistently groomed. His main-frame psychedelia collates all the fragments of himself and masterfully sticks them back together.

    Too Bright

"Hadreas unifies his lyrical and musical ambitions
into the most forthright, ornate, lustrous and 'pop'
moment of his career....sounds like triumph. "
    - Pitchfork on "Queen" BEST NEW TRACK

"Mike Hadreas doesn't so much accept the crown
as snatch it out from the air." - DIY

    "Immeasurably cathartic.... Perfume Genius has
never sounded this furious and confident."
    - Stereogum

Over the course of two astonishing albums, Perfume
Genius, aka Seattle native Mike Hadreas, cemented
his place as a singer-songwriter of rare frankness,
creating songs that, while achingly emotional, offered
empathy and hope, rather than any judgment or
handwringing. Sparse, gorgeous and with Hadreas'
quavering vocals often only accompanied by piano,
they were uncommonly beautiful tales of a life lived
on the dark side - scarred, brutalised, yet ultimately,
    slowly but surely reclaimed.

Too Bright, however, is something else altogether.
Less self-conscious, and less concerned with
storytelling and easily-digested melodies, it is a
    brave, bold, unpredictably quixotic exploration
of what Hadreas calls "an underlying rage that
has slowly been growing since ten and has just
begun to bubble up". Recorded with Adrian Utley
of Portishead and featuring John Parish on several
tracks, it is a stunning about-face which brings to
mind audacious career-shift albums like Kate Bush's
The Dreaming or Scott Walker's Tilt, records which
walk the tightrope between pure songwriting and
    overt experimentation.

    Beyond Ugly

Domino is proud to present the third album, Beyond Ugly, from the Bristol, UK duo of Malachai.

Beyond Ugly is the last panel in the band's Ugly triptych and that it was completed at all came as a
shock to all concerned, least of all the group. After the conclusion of the campaign for their sophomore
album, Return To The Ugly Side, members Gee Ealey and Scott Hendy drifted apart with no definitive
plans to take up arms together. It was a chance meeting in Bristol that drew the two back into one
another's orbit and to the realization that there was some unfinished monkey business. The duo reengaged slowly, simply working up a track at a time, more for the cathartic act of creating good music
rather than the artificial construct of "delivering an album." Lo and behold, the creative process built
an inertia of its own and Beyond Ugly began to take shape.

And what a fine shape it is... Beyond Ugly recaptures the sonic stew of debut album, The Ugly Side
Of Love, a potent of brew of post-summer of love and some good ol' Bristol-fashion psychedelic
comedown. However, there's a healthy dose of renewed restlessness and anger emanating from Ealey
that permeates the album thanks to some spirited vocal performances, from the anthemic and vengeful
soliloquy of "Sweet Flower" to the civilly disobedient "I Deserve To No."

Of course, Malachai isn't a one-man show. As Rakim had Eric B... Hendy, the duo's musical director, has
truly outdone his past efforts and provides a sturdy musical platform from which Rev. Ealey delivers his
sermons, whether the occasion calls for an exotic sturm-und-clang ("I Deserve To No") or a genteel softshoe waltz ("Hear It Comes").

Malachai have always enjoyed // suffered the curse of being a "musician's band." Geoff Barrow of
Portishead originally released The Ugly Side Of Love on his Invada imprint before Domino swooped
in and there was no bigger proselytizer of Malachai's prowess than Sergio Pizzorno of Kasabian and
both take their support a step further with guest appearances on "Dragons Ball" and "The Love"
respectively. Additionally, "Segs" Jennings, bassist from punk legends The Ruts joins the fray on
    "Sweet Flower."

The album concludes with a montage of hallucinations from across the band's discography before what
can be best described as the ominous twilight tranquility of "End." Is this really where the Malachai
story ends? As shown by the creative triumph of Beyond Ugly, sometimes it's best not to plan at all and
just let it happen. We'll do our best to let you know when it does.

Soundtracks is a compilation album, first released in 1970, consisting of tracks written for film. The album marks the departure of the band's original vocalist Malcolm Mooney, who sings on two tracks, to be replaced by new member Damo Suzuki. "Don't Turn the Light On, Leave Me Alone" is Damo Suzuki's first recorded performance with Can.

The band upgraded to 16 tracks and had the opportunity
to bring out many more layers of sound and an upbeat
nature for most of the tracks in the process. The album was
produced by the band themselves, and produced a single,
"Hunters and Collectors" backed by "Vernal Equinox", which
was issued on Virgin that same year.

The band's powerful influence has never diminished, and
their indelible mark is apparent in the bands who freely
acknowledge their importance - from Portishead, James
Murphy, New Order, Factory Floor, Public Image Ltd,
Mogwai, Kanye West (who sampled 'Sing Swan Song') and
Radiohead - as well as across other disciplines such as
    visual art and literature.

Can was founded in 1968 by Irmin Schmidt, Holger
Czukay, Michael Karoli and Jaki Liebezeit who formed
a group which would utilize and transcend all boundaries of
ethnic, electronic, experimental, and modern classical music.

Can, the 11th studio album by Can was originally released
in 1979. Lost during its initial release amongst the punk
explosion, Can features the classic tracks "Sodom" and
"Can Be". Holger Czukay's involvement took a back seat
on this album. Can is also the last album before Can reunited
with Malcolm Mooney on the reunion album, Rite Time in
    1986.

Future Days is the fifth studio album by Can. This is the
last album to feature Japanese vocalist Damo Suzuki. On
Future Days, the band explored the ambient direction they
had introduced into their sound on the previous year's Ege
Bamyasi creating a landmark in European electronic music.
Future Days is fiercely progressive, calming, complex,
intense, and beautiful all at once.
