    Opposites

Biffy Clyro's sixth studio album Opposites is an attention-commanding two-disc behemoth. The division between the two halves isn't as apparent as one might anticipate from a project such as this (with a title such as that). Thematically, each disc does adhere to its subjects - the former an anxious, bleak chapter, told with a raw intensity; the latter playing host to a more positive, uplifting premise.
But sonically, Opposites is very much a single body of work. The Sand at the Core of Our Bones segues seamlessly into The Land at the End of Our Toes, making for an overall steadfast record that's unmistakeably theirs.

In amongst the seismic riffs and knockout choruses that the band has made its calling card are twinkling vocal hooks, bagpipes, little punctuations of harp, yowling bass, and overt humour. Many of the above can be found in Stingin' Belle alone, which houses the lyric "you think you're cool like a porcupine". For a band with the tools to be a staid, ever-earnest entity, a pleasing sense of wit continues to be a key facet of Biffy Clyro.

    Porcupine Meat

Naming one's album after a song titled "Porcupine Meat" may seem a little unusual - unless, of course, you're Bobby Rush, who earned his first gold record in 1971 with a hit entitled "Chicken Heads." He elaborates on his recent composition: "If a lady won't treat me right, but she doesn't want anyone else to have me, that is hard to digest." Hence the lyric, "too fat to eat, too lean to throw away."

Porcupine Meat is Rush's debut release for Rounder Records, and one of the best recordings of his astonishing 60-plus year career. The album is due out September 16, 2016.
Rush estimates that he has cut over 300 songs since he first began making music. He has been honored with three Grammy nominations, as well as ten Blues Music Awards and 41 nominations. He was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2006.

Make no mistake: Rush is not your typical octogenarian. At age 82, he exudes the energy of a 20-year-old, on the road for more than 200 dates a year. His hectic tour schedule has earned him the affectionate title King of the Chitlin' Circuit. Rush has traveled the globe including Japan and Beirut. In 2007, he earned the distinction of being the first blues artist to play at the Great Wall of China. His renowned stage act features his famed shake dancers, who personify his funky blues and the ribald humor that he has cultivated during the course of his storied career.

Born Emmet Ellis, Jr. in Homer, Louisiana, he adopted the stage name Bobby Rush out of respect for his father, a pastor. According to Rush, his parents never talked about the blues being the devil's music. "My daddy never told me to sing the blues, but he also didn't tell me to not sing the blues. I took that as a green light."

Rush built his first guitar when he was a youngster. "I didn't know where to buy one, even if I had the money. I was a country boy," he says. After seeing a picture of a guitar in a magazine, he decided to make one by attaching the top wire of a broom to a wall and fretting it with a bottle. He also got some harmonica lessons from his father He eventually acquired a real guitar, and started playing in juke joints as a teenager, when his family briefly relocated to Little Rock, Arkansas. The fake moustache Rush wore made club owners believe he was old enough to gain entry into their establishments. While he was living in Little Rock, Rush's band, which featured Elmore James, had a residency at a nightspot called Jackrabbit.

During the mid-1950s, Rush relocated to Chicago to pursue his musical career and make a better life for himself. It was there that he started to work with Earl Hooker, Luther Allison, and Freddie King, and sat in with many of his musical heroes, such as Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, Willie Dixon, and Little Walter. Rush eventually began leading his own band in the 1960s. He also started to craft his own distinct style of funky blues, and recorded a succession of singles for a various small labels. It wasn't until the early 1970s that Rush finally scored a hit with "Chicken Heads." More recordings followed, including an album for Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff's Philadelphia International Label.
Rush relocated one final time, to Jackson, Miss. in the early 1980s. He was tired of the cold up north, and he realized that setting up his base of operations directly in the center of the South would make it easier to perform in nearby cities on weekends. More indie label recordings followed. Songs like "Sue, A Man Can Give (But He Sure Can't Take It)," "What's Good For The Goose Is Good For The Gander Too," and" I Ain't Studdin' You" became regional jukebox favorites in juke joints throughout the region, and many of those songs are still fan favorites that are an integral part of his live repertoire.

Since 2003, Rush has self-released the majority of his work (including the critically acclaimed Folk Funk album) on his Deep Rush label, but recently, he came to the realization that having a bigger record company behind him would be beneficial. "I outgrew myself," he says. "I need someone to help in doing the things I can't do. When you are wearing all the hats, you can't be everywhere at once."

Enter esteemed producer and two-time Grammy winner Scott Billington, Rounder Records' longtime VP of A&R. Billington first met Rush at a Recording Academy meeting 25 years ago, and they became fast friends. He has wanted to work with Rush ever since. "He is the most vital bluesman of his generation," says Billington. He continues, "There are many people who still don't know Bobby Rush, even though he is a hero in the parallel universe of the Chitlin' Circuit - fans stop him on the street in Memphis and Helena and Little Rock."

Porcupine Meat will not only please Rush's older fans, but is likely to win over many new ones. Billington reflects, "We wanted to come up with something fresh, while staying 100% true to Bobby."

The album was recorded in New Orleans, and Rush was pleased and proud to be given the opportunity to make an album in his home state for the very first time. His impassioned vocals and in-the-pocket harmonica playing are among the best performances of his career. Unlike most of his recent releases, these sessions only feature real instruments and no synthesizers. All of the rhythm tracks were cut live in the studio, often edited down from jams that on several occasions ran close to ten minutes.

For the project, Billington assembled some of the best Louisiana musicians, including Shane Theriot, David Torkanowsky, Jeffrey "Jellybean" Alexander, Kirk Joseph, Cornell Williams, and others. Rush brought along his old friend and longtime collaborator, guitarist Vasti Jackson, who worked with Bobby and Scott on getting the songs ready for the studio. Guitar greats Dave Alvin, Keb' Mo', and Joe Bonamassa all make guest appearances on the album.

Rush has always been a prolific and clever songwriter. The songs he penned for Porcupine Meat such as "Dress Too Short," "I Don't Want Nobody Hanging Around," "Me, Myself And I," "Nighttime Gardener," "It's Your Move," and the title selection, all equal or rival his best material. "Funk O' De Funk" delivers exactly what the title suggests and what Rush has always done the best, which is putting the funk into the blues. While "Got Me Accused" is inspired by events from Rush's own life, the lyrics tell an all-too-familiar tale about the rampant racial injustice that afflicts our society. Producer Billington and his wife Johnette Downing (the well known New Orleans songwriter and children's musician) co-wrote a couple of fine selections, "Catfish Stew" and "Snake In The Grass."

Bobby Rush is the greatest bluesman currently performing. Porcupine Meat is a testament to his brilliance, which presents him at his very best, and doesn't try to be anything that he is not. "I just try to record good music and stories," he humbly states. With this recording, he has more than accomplished his goal, and has produced one of the finest contemporary blues albums in recent times.

The Sky Moves Sideways (Awaiting Repress)

'The Sky Moves Sideways' is regarded by many fans as one of Porcupine Tree's finest releases and a cornerstone of any Porcupine Tree collection. Recorded partly as a Steven Wilson solo project and partly as a full band album, 'The Sky Moves Sideways' is a diverse experimental rock release spanning space rock and progressive rock styles with long guitar led, instrumental sections.

Following the now sold-out first box set of Porcupine Tree's Delerium Years, and the near sold-out second box set, Kscope are re-releasing the band's records from the era, including 'The Sky Moves Sideways', as a series of double LPs on audiophile vinyl and presented in gatefold packaging. Steven Wilson specially remastered the album for the first Delerium Years box set, and that remastered version has not been available as a standalone LP until this release.

Porcupine Tree started out as an in-joke between Steven Wilson and a friend (early recordings were purportedly the back catalog of a fictional seventies supergroup The Porcupine Tree, that Wilson created). Over 20 years later the group is selling out arenas across the world.

1996's Signify, their first complete album recorded as a full band, fuses numerous rock and avant-garde styles with the ability to absorb many influences, but rely on none.

The album is regarded by the band (and many fans) as one of their finest works, establishing them as a highly respected force in the emerging musical underground.

    On The Sunday Of Life

    Remastered By Steven Wilson

Porcupine Tree's 1991 debut album is an album that stands up as a modern day pop-psych classic.
With acid warped lyrics courtesy of Alan Duffy (the brains behind the late lamented Imaginary Records
label) the album is a surreal delight containing gems such as "Jupiter Island" and "Linton Samuel
Dawson" filled with quirky melodies, effected vocals and trippy backwards guitar work. "Nine Cats",
the undoubted masterpiece of the album, is pure Edward Lear styled psychedelia.

'On The Sunday Of Life' also hints at the direction the band would later take with more progressive
influenced material such as the epic 'Radioactive Toy' still performed live today.

    Voyage 34

    Remastered By Steven Wilson

The album originates from a single track, titled Voyage 34, which was to be part of the Porcupine Tree's second studio album, Up the Downstair. Originally a 30-minute track intended to be the second disc of a double album, Wilson eventually decided to release Voyage 34 independently of the rest of the album.

Instead, it was released in two parts, as singles, as Voyage 34 (Phase 1) and Voyage 34 (Phase 2) in 1992. In 1993, Voyage 34: Remixes was released, containing two remixes of the originals. Voyage 34 (Phase 3) was a remix by the British electronic music group Astralasia, while Voyage 34 (Phase 4) was a remix by Wilson himself, along with future band member Richard Barbieri. A voice sample of Dead Can Dance's song As the Bell Rings the Maypole Spins is repeated throughout all four tracks.

    We're Here Because We're Here

    Album mixed by Steven Wilson

We're Here Because We're Here is the eighth studio album by British band Anathema, released on 31 May 2010. The working title of the album was Horizons. The album was mixed by Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree.

Ville Valo of the band HIM recorded vocals for the song Angels Walk Among Us.[1] The title of the album is taken from a song of the same name that was sung in the Allied trenches of World War I to the tune of Auld Lang Syne.

It is the last album to feature keyboarist Les Smith.

Response from the critics was generally positive. The album was proclaimed Prog Album of the Year by Classic Rock magazine, describing it as a flawless, life-affirming comeback and a gold-plated contender for album of the year.

The World's Not Worth It sees Gavan Kearney working with a handpicked cast of collaborators - including long-time muse Moonswift, Porcupine Tree's Steven Wilson, Eden House vocalist Amandine Ferrari and Use of Ashes guitarist Maarten Scherrenburg (on drums) - to create a blissful world of unconventional, yet instantly beguiling compositions. whilst still working within a by now familiar territory delineated by folk, ambient and progressive rock at a chambermusical volume, elements from the world of classical music are featured more prominently than ever, taking the project in a new direction: Kearney's reverence for the groundbreaking inventions of Romantic composers Ravel, Debussy and theosophic genius Alexander Scriabin shows through in extended solo-piano and guitar passages, adventurous chord progressions as well as a tender clarinet-solo on Events in a Skyline. Just like Scriabin would take the harmonic system to its limits, these pieces explore the outer limits of the song format, working with controlled stylistic collisions rather than a schematic chorus/refrain approach - such as on under the stares, which explores what'd happen "if Bach bumped into Messiaen".

The vinyl edition of The World's Not Worth It comes in a limited edition on 180 gram clear vinyl, housed in a deluxe gatefold sleeve and with a bonus cd copy of the album.

    Meteorites

Legendary Liverpool band Echo & the Bunnymen to release their 12th studio album and first since 2009, Meteorites. Produced by Youth (Killing Joke, The
Verve), the album contains ten hand-picked new songs written by founder Ian McCulloch and performed by Bunnymen stalwarts Mc Culloch and Will
Sergeant along with Gordy Goudie (guitar) and Stephen Brannan (bass).

Formed in 1978, the Bunnymen have been a vital force in the indie rock world for over 36 years having won over millions of obsessive music fans
worldwide and indelibly influenced countless bands with their signature sound from the Flaming Lips to Coldplay to Pavement. Meteorites is a key addition
to their repertoire. It s an intimate song cycle written by Ian McCulloch performed by the band with a renewed sense of purpose showcasing all of their
unmistakable musical hallmarks while taking them to a new level.

Says McCulloch: Meteorites , the new Bunnymen album...at long last we ve made the worthy successor to Crocodiles, Heaven Up Here, Porcupine and
Ocean Rain. Meteorites is what Echo and the Bunnymen mean and are meant to be up there in heaven--untouchable, celestial, beautiful and real. It has
    changed my life.

    Pale Communion

PALE COMMUNION, which was produced by the band's very own Mikael Åkerfeldt and mixed by longtime collaborator and Porcupine Tree frontman/guitarist Steven Wilson, is heralded by the lead single, "Cusp of Eternity."

The new material find's Opeth once again challenging the boundaries of extreme music. In a recent interview with VICE's Noisey, Akerfeldt stated, "I wanted to do something more melodic with this album there's stronger vocal melodies and more melodies overall I was pretty consistent with that frame of mind throughout the writing process." Recently, Metal Injection's Greg Kennelty broke down Opeth's PALE COMMUNION in a track by track review, exclaiming "This record knows exactly what it's doing and nails it through and through one of my favorite records of 2014. If not my favorite record of 2014."

PALE COMMUNION follows 2011's critically acclaimed HERITAGE which proved a milestone album for Opeth, earning them widespread acclaim and an ever-growing fan following. Debuting Top 20 on the Billboard 200 and racking up numerous 'Best Of' accolades in 2011, HERITAGE landed at #2 on both Decibel's "Top 40 Albums of 2011" and Guitar World's "Top 50 Albums of 2011" lists.

    Storm Corrosion

Storm Corrosion is the long-discussed and highly anticipated collaboration between two of the modern progressive rock scene's most innovative and multi-talented artists: Porcupine Tree's Steven Wilson and Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth. The pair will release their self-titled debut album via Roadrunner Records.

The sound of Storm Corrosion can best be described as enchanting, orchestral, ambient, epic (half the album's tracks clock in around the 10-minute mark) and nothing short of surprising to the new ear. However, the musicians' respective fanbases will be primed to appreciate the new output, with Wilson's recent solo album, Grace for Drowning, and Opeth's Heritage having brought them to a logical place to understand Storm Corrosion. This eponymous collection is almost viewed as one side of a musical triangle.

Says Wilson, "If you'd asked me three months ago about the music, I would have said, 'Expect the last thing you would expect.' But actually, now that Heritage and Grace for Drowning have come out, I don't think it's going to be that much of a shock to people, because it's almost like a third part of the trilogy, in a way. If anything, it's even more orchestral, even more stripped down, even more dark, twisted and melancholic, but it certainly feels like it comes from the same place as Heritage and Grace for Drowning, which indeed it does because it was written during the same period."

"Some of the music on this record I think is the most beautiful music I have participated in ever," adds Åkerfeldt. "There's some magical sections on there. Musically I think we've created something earthy, a bit frightening, exhausting, profound and rather intense. All at the same time. I can safely say I don't know any other band or artist that sounds anything like Storm Corrosion. I guess that was also one of our goals, so to speak."

Liner Notes By Guitarist Will Sergeant

One of the most acclaimed British rockers from the 1980's, this legendary band formed in Liverpool in 1978 and were forefathers of the neopsychedelic movement. Their line-up consisted of vocalist Ian McCulloch, guitarist Will Sergeant, bass player Les Pattinson and drummer Pete de Freitas, eventually replacing the original drum machine.

The band's cult status eventually waned with mainstream success in 1983 after they scored a UK top 10 hit with "The Cutter" and attendant album Porcupine which hit #2 in the UK. 1984's album Ocean Rain is considered a landmark post-punk release, featuring the lead single "Killing Moon."

The band split in 1988 but regrouped in 1997, releasing an album in 2014 that was their first UK Top 40 entry since 1999. The band's popularity never quite made the same impact in the US as it did in Europe so they are ripe for rediscovery for anyone interested in bands such as Suede, Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Blur, Interpol and Oasis.

This brand new collection of their legendary live material recorded in Sweden in 1985 includes classic Rock-N-Roll covers of legendary tunes by the Doors, Rolling Stones, Velvet Underground, Television and more available on vinyl for the first time. Many of the tracks from Sweden were recorded live for Swedish National Radio at the Karen Club. Also included here is a legendary extended version of "Do It Clean" recorded live in concert at the Royal Albert Hall in 1983.

    Disconnect

TV Ghost's third full-length for In The Red, Disconnect is a journey to the center of dreams. The Lafayette, Indiana, band displays a newfound maturity, incorporating churning rhythms and psychedelic drone into a lush torrent of gaseous keys, sprawling guitars and eerie melody. Think Porcupine-era Echo and the Bunnymen and Tago Mago-era Can run through a Cure Pornography blender.

"TV Ghost's 2009 debut LP, Cold Fish, is a maelstrom-10 hectic songs ripped out in 25 minutes. Stuffed to the seams with wiry guitars, trembling keyboards, crashing beats, and Tim Gick's mad-man warble, it has the creepy tension of a post-punk haunted house where the Cramps, the Scientists, or Pere Ubu might leap out from the shadows at any moment. The band deftly balances precision and abandon-every moment sounds lunatic and unhinged, yet no track collapses into complete anarchy.

"That abandon has subsided a bit on Mass Dream, which doubles the length of its predecessor despite having only one more track. That's by design-Gick says that his intent was to "space things out more, let the songs breathe." And while I miss Cold Fish's farther-flung moments, the band has countered that loss with songs that are deeper and more open. Now, along with all the post-punk echoes rattling around, unexpected reference points pop up. At times I hear the enervated drama of Echo & the Bunnymen's Ian McCulloch, or the stridency of Ian Svenonius during his Nation of Ulysses days. And TV Ghost prove as adept at stark dread as they are at fevered bedlam...."
