Perhaps people needed help pronouncing Lynyrd Skynyrd's name when the Florida band's debut album came out in 1973, but soon no one would need help recognizing - or requesting - the album's classic rock anthem Free Bird. With the exception of this nine-minute epic, Pronounced is actually quite lean and mean. Full of instantly recognizable Skynyrd standards like I Ain't the One, Gimme Three Steps, Poison Whiskey, Simple Man, and the ultimate rock ballad Tuesday's Gone, there isn't a single weak spot on it. By blending hard rock, blues, country, and the heart of the South with the distinctly sentimental voice and intelligent lyrics of Ronnie Van Zant, Lynyrd Skynyrd didn't just create an anthem with this album, they defined a genre. They also won themselves an opening slot on the Who's US Quadrophenia tour. Fun Fact: Leonard Skinnerd was a physical-education teacher at the band members' high school that busted their chops for having long hair.

    SLAVVE

SLAVVE is a three-piece band that originated in West Palm Beach, FL
in 2012. Though they have since relocated to Brooklyn, the trio has
deep roots in the music they've always loved. From ripping guitars
reminiscent of No Age and early Poison the Well to the melodic
heaviness of acts like Deftones and Autolux, SLAVVE started out as a
home project by vocalist/guitarist Chuka Chukuma. He then recruited
bassist Alex Goldstein and childhood friend Marcos Marchesani, a
former member of Surfer Blood and Weird Wives, to turn SLAVVE into
a fully-formed beast. Recorded in just two days, their self-titled debut
EP is a glimpse into the powerful, gripping force of what they call
"working class music." It spans issues of uncertainty within oneself
("Better Half"), the strange pride of self-loathing ("Pity Party"),
deception and frustration ("In Your Dreams"), and the futile nature of
trying to make something work when it just doesn't ("Out of Mind"). In a
world over-saturated with bands feeding into short-lived hype, SLAVVE
is paving its own way, staying true to the music they loved growing up
while looking ahead to carve their own landscape.!

    Chicago 17

Mastered From Original Chicago Records Master Tapes

Mastered by Friday Music's Joe Reagoso With Chicago's Lee Loughnane

Ballads were a big part of 17 -- in fact, these hits and album cuts like Remember the Feeling are among the first power ballads, ballads that were given arena rock flourishes and dramatic arrangements but never took the focus off the melody, so housewives and preteens alike could sing along with them. Power ballads later became the province of hair metal bands like Bon Jovi and Poison, but Foster's work with Chicago on 17 really helped set the stage for them, since he not only gave the ballads sweeping rock arrangements, but the harder, punchier tunes here play like ballads.

Even when the band turns up the intensity here -- Stay the Night has a spare, rather ominous beat that suggests they were trying for album-oriented rock; Along Comes a Woman has a stiff drum loop and a hiccupping synth bass that suggests dance-pop -- the music is still slick, shiny, and soft, music that can appeal to the widest possible audience. 17 did indeed find the widest possible audience, as it ruled radio into late 1985, by which time there were plenty of imitators of Foster's style. There may have been plenty of imitators -- soon, solo Cetera was one of them, making music that was indistinguishable from this -- but nobody bettered Foster, and Chicago 17 is his pièce de rÉsistance, a record that sounded so good it didn't quite matter that some of the material didn't stick as songs; as a production, it was the pinnacle of his craft and one of the best adult contemporary records of the '80s, perhaps the best of them all.

Certainly, it's hard to think of another adult contemporary album quite as influential within its style as this -- not only did it color the records that followed, but it's hard not to think of Chicago 17 as the place where soft rock moved away from the warm, lush sounds that defined the style in the late '70s and early '80s and moved toward the crisp, meticulous, synthesized sound of adult contemporary pop.

    The Poison of Self Confinement

Picking up the torch of Florida's unique brand of metallic hardcore, Blistered have raged to the forefront of today's scene with incredible fervor. Their songs simultaneously feel unearthed from some '90s time capsule and surprisingly current, perfectly capturing a balance of influences and innovations.

Following their critically acclaimed Soul Erosion EP (April 2014 on 6131 Records) and extensive touring, Blistered began plotting what would become their first proper full length. Entitled The Poison of Self Confinement and masterfully recorded by Kevin Bernsten (Red Death, Noisem, Pulling Teeth, Mindset), the album demonstrates an even more honed songwriting prowess. The result is an album that lives up to the band's moniker, delivering break-neck metal-infused riffage matched with pummeling breakdowns. Blistered have created a vital release that defies easy classification, appealing to both sides of the metal / hardcore sounds from which they draw.

    Poison Season

Poison Season opens with Vancouver native Dan Bejar swathed in Hunky Dory strings. He's a dashboard Bowie surveying four wracked characters-Jesus, Jacob, Judy, Jack-simultaneously Biblical and musical theatre. This bittersweet, Times Square-set fanfare is reprised twice more on the record-first as swaying, saxophone-stoked "street-rock" and then finally as a curtain-closing reverie. "The first and last songs are actually one song tracked live with quintet," explains their author. "I even sang with the band. That song always swung between super austere and super mid-'70s Springsteen/Bowie street-rock. In the end, I decided I wanted both. Couldn't really figure out a way to sequence the orchestral version within the record, so I decided to carve it up as a book-ending motif, with the rock version squarely in the middle." Mr. Bejar has long displayed a chameleonic instinct for change while maintaining a unified aesthetic (rather than just pinballing between reference points). No two records sound the same, but they're always uniquely Destroyer. His latest incarnation often appears to take sonic cues from a distinctly British (usually Scottish, to be precise) strain of sophisti-pop: you might hear traces of Aztec Camera, Prefab Sprout, Orange Juice, or The Blow Monkeys. These songs merge a casual literary brilliance with intense melodic verve, nimble arrangements, and a certain blue-eyed soul sadness.

SEETHER, (Shaun Morgan - vocals/guitar, Dale Stewart - bass/vocals, and John Humphrey - drums) one of hard rock's most successful and enduring outfits, return with their seventh full-length studio album, entitled Poison the Parish. The album is among the heaviest and emotionally pure efforts of the band's illustrious career.

Recorded at Blackbird Studio in Nashville, Tennessee, Poison the Parish marks the first album produced in its entirety by the band's lead singer and songwriter, Shaun Morgan. Playing with a newfound ferocity and purpose, the new material gelled quickly, providing Morgan's dense, melodic grooves and brooding subject matter a gritty luster and room to breathe.

Fifteen years deep into an incredibly consistent and rewarding career, Seether continue to thrive, pushing their creative boundaries while remaining true to their fiercely loyal, worldwide fan base. Poison the Parish is Seether at their very best, a gripping and self-assured affirmation of a quintessential hard rock band in peak form.

    Let The Poison Out

Over the course of four years, the Beets have released two lps and three singles for NY label Captured Tracks, toured nationally with Vivian Girls, the Mountain Goats, shared the stage with Pavement, and have been featured on the Howard Stern show twice! Let the Poison Out was captured on tape by Gary Olson of Ladybug Transistor at Marlborough Farms and finds the Beets shaking off the lo-fi brashness of their first two lps. The jangly acoustic guitar, brutal and surreal lyrics, and catchy and breezy sing-a-long songs that people have come to worship by the band, have remained.

    Confuse And Conquer (Awaiting Repress)

Formed in 1980, POISON IDEA became a household name in the hardcore/punk scenes early in their career, and are known as one of the most notoriously in-your-face acts in the American musical underworld, with an enraged, high-energy live set even more rambunctious than the massive roster of singles, EPs, full-length studio and live releases and more, across a realm of labels including Pusmort, Tim/Kerr, Epitaph, Farewell, TKO, Southern Lord, and their own Fatal Erection. They've been an incredibly influential act to major performers including Nirvana, Pantera, Napalm Death, Machine Head, Eyehategod, Emperor, Turbonegro and an endless list of others.

It is with massive enthusiasm that Southern Lord Recordings announces the brand NEW Poison Idea studio LP: Confuse & Conquer featuring eleven raging new anthems. Recorded by Joel Grind (Toxic Holocaust) and mastered by Brad Boatright (From Ashes Rise), the record booms with thirty-five minutes of fully ignited hardcore punk in the monolithic style the band has provided for three-and-a-half decades now.

To say that the Poison Control Center's Sad Sour Future is one of the finest albums you will hear this year is such a misguided response to its soaring ambition that we might as well pack it in right now. These four songwriters hauled over 40 songs a collective 1500 miles from their respective homes to a turn of the century schoolhouse on the Mississippi River filled with analog recording equipment. The result is a double-album encompassing the motions and emotions of separation, loss, and the struggles of leaving your 20s behind and growing older in your own skin.

    Split

This split 12-inch includes two songs by Baltimore's Dan Deacon and Adventure. Deacon's music still has the same uplifting spirit as before, but it now has a maturity. It's music written to help motivate and get pumped in both joyous and difficult times. Adventure's contributions include an oldie and a newbie. Poison Diamonds is also available on their self-titled full-length. Lifeguard is slower and poppier than Benny's (a.k.a. Adventure's) previous video-game sounding work. Limited edition vinyl-only release of 1,000 copies.

    Peace Delusions

Modern Pain's Peace Delusions is described by its creators' peers as if In Utero was a hardcore punk record. Peace Delusions resembles a golden artifact unearthed from the '80s American hardcore underground, harnessing the unbridled aggression of groundbreaking acts like SSD, Poison Idea and Infest and filtering it through the caustic, ashy atmospheres and unfettered noise rock of Texan predecessors Scratch Acid and the Jesus Lizard, as well as Moss Icon's murky, wordy pathos.

Hagar The Womb is for many, the missing piece of the UK anarcho-punk scene. Formed in 1981, Hagar The Womb was not a typical example of that scene, for they refused to conform to the dress codes and dour seriousness of their peers. What first started as a sextet sporting three female vocalists, soon experienced a healthy bit of turnover. Circulating through at least a dozen band members, Hagar The Womb was often identified by bright colored artwork and outfits, as well as bringing an original and upbeat sound to an otherwise homogenous scene. A week after their inception, they were sharing a bill with The Mob and Zounds. Hagar The Womb would go on to play with the likes of The Apostles, Poison Girls and Rubella Ballet before breaking up in 1985.

A Brighter Shade Of Black puts together both of their 12 EP's Word Of The Womb and Funnery in the Nunnery as well as a common compilation favorite called For The Ferrymen. The latter recorded by Poison Girls sometimes bassist, Pete Fender in the Poison Girl's own X-N-Trix Studios. Reissued for the first time and limited to 1000 copies.

The Cramps emerged out of the first wave of punk music in the mid '70s, frequenting clubs such as world-famous CBGB. Led by husband and wife team Lux Interior and Poison Ivy, this garage psychobilly band incorporated a unique flair for coalescing camp, Link Wray-inspired riffs, B-movies and bizarre performances.

In the band's self-produced sixth studio album, Flamejob, The Cramps return to their punk/rockabilly-esque style, and of course, ratchet up the sexual double entendre.

Equal parts classic-era punk, casio minimalism, slam poetry,
growling protest chant, and poison ivy rash, Sleaford Mods are
singular, and always powerful. And with their TCR 12",
particularly its title track, named for the 1970s auto toy "Total
Control Racing," the Mods are surprisingly tuneful?

The 12" leads into the duo's Rough Trade debut, planned for next
year, which showcases a softer side of the
perennially-aggressive heh. Nah, that's not the case. They raise
as much hell and throw as many punches here as they have ever.
    Thank god. Sleafords for President.
