    The Ultimate Analogue Test LP

    Editors Editors Editors Editors

Analogue Productions set out to produce the ultimate test record.

We've consulted many experts in the field, including mastering engineers, audio experts, turntable experts and audiophile listeners, to create a test record that's never been made before. When Barry Wolifson from Sterling Sound in New York City called us with the same idea we had been thinking about - that being to create the ultimate test record - he and our audio expert Clark Williams began to brainstorm and research ideas until they were both completely satisfied with what should go on the record.

Most of the test records in the past have been made to test a variety of equipment. This test record excludes silly cannon shots, typewriters, voices on one channel and other useless fluff. This one specifically addresses your turntable and cartridge. It's designed to provide the basic test signals necessary to calibrate a turntable or cutting lathe as simply as possible. Most of the signals have specific implications, but it is certainly possible to use them in any number of novel ways.

This record was mastered and cut on a Neumann VMS 80 lathe at Sterling Sound and pressed at Record Technology, Inc. on high-quality, 180-gram virgin vinyl.

    Side 1

    General Reference Level

This 1 kHz reference tone will allow you to establish a "base level" for all measurements.
Track 1 1Khz reference tone 7cm/s Mono, in phase (Lateral)

Basic reference for all measurements, adjust meter for maximum convenience (in the studio 0VU).
Adjust preamp channel balance for equal output.
Also used to check the offset angle of the photo cartridge; L&R signals should be exactly in phase as displayed on an oscilloscope.

    Azimuth Adjustment

Track 2 1kHz reference level Left channel only

    Measure Right channel output.

Track 3 1kHz reference level Right channel only

    Measure Left channel output.

The object is to sit the stylus exactly perpendicular in the groove.

Twist cartridge about its radial axis until the measurements from Track 2 and Track 3 are equal or very close to equal for both channels.

    High Frequency Adjustment

Tracks 4, 5 and 6 are used to calibrate the RIAA high frequency equalizer of a phono preamp. This will be used to calibrate a mastering lathe's phono preamplifier or any phono preamplifier that has these adjustments.

Track 4 1 kHz tone at -20 below reference level, Lateral

    Reference for High Frequency test.

Track 5 10 kHz reference tone at -20dbu, Lateral
Adjust the high frequency until the output level equals that of Track 4.

Track 6 1 kHz to 20 kHz sweep at -20dbu, Mono (Lateral)

The AC millivoltmeter reading should stay constant across all frequencies. There are a number of factors which can affect frequency response, including cable capacitance, cartridge loading, tracking force and worn parts. Because of this, it can be difficult to achieve perfectly flat frequency response. Sometimes by making small compromises in the 10 kHz adjustment, a better overall frequency response can be achieved.

    Low Frequency Adjustment

Tracks 7 & 8 are used to calibrate the RIAA low frequency equalizer of a phono preamp.

Track 7 1 kHz to 20 Hz sweep at 0 VU (Lateral)

Play Track 7 and measure the output with your AC millivolt meter.

Ideally, the output will be flat across all frequencies. When viewed on an oscilloscope, the amplitude would remain constant during the frequency downsweep.

Track 8 100 Hz reference tone at 0 vu (Lateral)
Adjust LF Eq to reference (which is your reading from Track 1).

    Track 9 VTA adjust

This is an IEC intermodulation distortion (IMD) test signal; 60Hz & 4kHz 4:1 ratio.

Using an IMD tester, adjust VTA by raising or lowering the tonearm for minimum distortion.

Track 10 Standard Wow & Flutter test signal; 3150Hz
The Wow & Flutter meter will give dynamic speed variations as a percentage deviation from nominal.

Also, the frequency counter should read exactly 3150 Hz for nominal speed. You can use the Hz function on your multi-meter (if so equipped) to verify speed here as well. You can also use to find the measurements at 45RPM. The correct reading at 45RPM would be 4253 Hz (45/33.33) x 3150.

    Side 2

Track 1 Anti-skating test; 315Hz amplitude sweep to +12dbu (Lateral)

Signal should remain clean in both channels up to the highest level, both audibly and as viewed on an oscilloscope. In case of distortion, increase anti-skating force or decrease anti-skate until breakup occurs equally in both channels. The left channel information is inscribed on the inner groove wall, the right channel information, on the outer groove wall. Because of the offset angle of a pivoted tonearm, a constantly varying vector force biases the arm towards the center of the record causing the stylus to lose contact with the outer (i.e. right channel) groove wall. Both linear and modulated groove velocity, tracking force, stylus profile, and vinyl composition are contributing factors. The anti skating force attempts to ameliorate this by applying an opposing similar force.

It is also accepted that the overall force vector increases as the tonearm approaches closer to the spindle or end of the record.

    Track 2 Pink noise lateral

    Track 3 Pink noise vertical

    Used for cartridge "demagnetizing"

You can also use this track to loosen up the cantilever's suspension to help break in a new cartridge. Play these tracks five to ten times after every 300 hours of normal LP playback.

    Track 4 1kHz @ reference level, vertical
This out-of-phase signal should cancel to nothing when summed to mono.

Any signals still present are distortion artifacts, lack of channel balance, or timing (phase) anomalies. This test can be a second confirmation of anti-skate adjustment.

    Track 5 1kHz to 10Hz sweep @ -20 below

    reference level, vertical
Resonance anomalies in the tonearm / cartridge interface will show up as amplitude peaks and dips as the frequency sweeps down.

Once again, by listening in 'Mono' it is easier to hear the distortion artifacts.

Track 6 Silent groove for bearing rumble and table isolation

During playback of this track, nothing should be transmitted from the turntable to the speakers. Replay the track and gently tap on the rack or base that the turntable is resting on. There should be little or no thump transferred to the speakers. This track will help you experiment with turntable isolation methods and products to be able to get the most out of your playback system. You may want to use a closed or sealed headphone for best listening results, or a stethoscope on the plinth.

Many things that made the Black Cube phono stages famous throughout the world are now offered by the Black Cube Statement in a new, attractive package at an even more affordable price. This is true for the parts quality as well as for the highly rated audio performance. The original Black Cube phono preamplifier redefined the phono stage market when introduced in 1995 and saw many imitations. Since then Black Cube phono stages have always reached cult status. Numerous awards and countless positive reviews on all five continents clearly underline the success.

Compatible with practically all available cartridges on the market.

The Lehmannaudio Black Cube Statement phono stage is compatible with practically all available cartridges on the market from High Output MM to low output MC cartridges. Apart from the standard switch settings there is one onboard slot that can be fitted with a custom impedance to supply perfect termination even for the most exotic cartridges. Customization possibilities are practically infinite. No more need for expensive impedance plugs!

The entirely passive RIAA equalization network of the Black Cube Statement is realized with high precision foil capacitors. Bass coupling between the two linear gain stages is even realized with an MKP type. All resistors are of the low noise metal film variety. The switches for gain and load settings have gold plated contacts.

Because of the small outer dimensions the Black Cube Statement can be placed next to the turntable. This minimizes loss due to cable lengths. The external AC power supply keeps magnetic interference away from the audio section.

With modern amplifiers expected to cater for so many new devices, the phono capability has frequently been one of the features to disappear. At Creek Audio, the engineering team has always been aware of the benefits of vinyl - that is why the company continues to provide a number of phono stage options.

The OBH-18 was released in late 2003. The function of the OBH-18 is to boost the level and correct the frequency response of a low level signal coming from a moving magnet phono pick-up on a conventional turntable. The signal required by most modern amplifiers is described as being 'LINE' level, which is, in technical terms, between 200 and 500 milli-Volts with a flat frequency response. Unless your amplifier has a specific 'Phono' or Disc input, the level will be too low and the frequency response will be wrong. The OBH-18 is designed to boost the signal and introduce an R.I.A.A. frequency response characteristic.

The OBH-18 looks the part too! Designed to complement the Creek range of amplifiers, tuners and CD players, the new OBH range features an impressive solid aluminium front panel in a silver finish. The remainder of the 150mm casing is black so the products all but disappear.

Since the market introduction in 1995 the Black Cube phono stages by Lehmannaudio have become cult objects for analog oriented music lovers. Countless positive reviews and awards, and an unrivalled customer satisfaction worldwide document this truly exceptional success.

The device has even be vastly improved in 2006. A special 30 VA toroidal transformer of the PWX power supply is the main reason for the sonic performance achieved with the Black Cube SE. This transformer is not only overdimensioned but even sports a grounded isolation coil between the primary and secondary coil. The results: much more bass authority, a more liquid midrange as well as more openness. These sonic benefits are without any doubt the reasons that more and more music lovers choose the Black Cube SE right from the start.

No more need for expensive impedance plugs!

The Lehmannaudio Black Cube SE phono stage is compatible with practically all available cartridges on the market from High Output MM to MC. Apart from the standard switch settings there is one onboard slot plus one hard wire slot that can be fitted with a custom impedances to supply perfect termination even for the most exotic cartridges. No more need for expensive impedance plugs!

The input stages used in the Black Cube SE can also be found in top notch mixing consoles or in well known professional microphone preamps. The entirely passive RIAA equalization network is realized with high precision foil capacitors. All resistors are of the low noise metal film variety. The switches for gain and load settings have gold plated connectors. Because of the small outer dimensions the Black Cube SE can be placed next to the turntable. This minimizes loss due to cable lengths.

Lehmannaudio always pays special attention to details: the cable between power supply and audio section is shielded and uses Neutrik connectors with gold plated contacts at the power supply side. The cases of both the power supply and the audio section are made of nonmagnetic material (aluminium) and are equipped with a top cover coated with a special anti-resonance treatment.

Ultra High quality laminations, lower inductance and superior sound. These transformers were especially designed and tested with several low-output moving coil cartridges. These are very difficult transformers to construct and require a precision manufacturing process that can only be done by David Geren at CineMag. The same construction techniques are used as in the 1131, except that the inductance of the SKY 30 is even lower due to the lower step up ratios.

Hand Crafted, Moving Coil (MC) Cartridge Step-up Transformer (SUT) built with new CineMag SKY 30 (Blue Version) Transformers and gold plated hardware in a hand polished black powder coated cast-aluminum enclosure. All lettering is laser etched. Included are 2 switches: high/low gain and ground/lift.

Includes premium construction with C&K Brand Silver contact toggle switches, and Deluxe Gold Plated RCA jacks.

These specially designed transformers are wired to connect a moving coil cartridge (on a turntable) to a phono preamplifier, phono input of a receiver, or your preamp's phono input.

Switchable for 1:15 (24 dB gain) or 1:30 (30 dB gain).

Into a standard 47k phono preamp, the effective input impedance of the low gain (1:15 ratio) is 209 ohms. At 1:30, the effective input impedance is 52 ohms.

The 1:30 ratio is perfect for most low output cartridges.

    Construction Techniques:

All connections are Resistance soldered using the American Beauty system which avoids heat damage to the delicate insulation on the hair-like wires of the transformers. Test equipment is very low current to avoid saturating the transformer cores. You can count on a premier product that is state-of-the-art.

This unit includes a grounding post that can be used to connect your turntable ground and your preamplifier ground. It also includes a ground lift switch. In all modes, the transformer cases and faraday shield internal to the transformers are connected to the ground screw. In the ground mode, the phono system minus sides (negative sides) are connected to the grounding lug. This configuration works well for those systems where the turntable ground is connected to the negative leads coming from the phono cartridge or where the negative inputs to the preamp are internally connected to ground. In the lift mode, none of the conductors in the RCA jacks are connected to the case, ground, or shield and there is no electrical connection between channels. This design allows you much flexibility to mitigate for ground loops regardless of the configuration of your other equipment.

    OBH-15MK2 MM/MC Phono Pre-Amplifier

With modern amplifiers expected to cater for so many new source devices, the Phono capability, once very common, is one of those built-in features that has disappeared in recent times. The engineering team at Creek Audio has always loved the benefits of vinyl records and continues to work on technical and sonic improvements to its range of Phono amp options, be it the stand-alone OBH or Wyndsor or plug-in Sequel types. Tasked with designing a replacement for the long running OBH-15, the team came up with some valuable improvements and additional features; surprisingly they made them all fit into the original OBH-sized casework.

The OBH-15 mk2 has a completely new circuit design, with a discrete transistor MC and integrated circuit MM stage. Unlike its predecessor, the new amp has multiple gain settings and matching capabilities for capacitance and resistance. The signal required by most modern amplifiers is described as being 'LINE' level which is, in technical terms, between 200 and 500 milli-Volts sensitivity with a flat frequency response. Unless your amplifier has a specific 'Phono' or Disc input, the level will be too low to play vinyl and the frequency response will be wrong.

For the past 15 years, Michael Yee's Phonomena phono stage designs have defined Q.P.R., or Quality/Price Ratio, for phono stages, and the Nova II is no exception.

Built in California, the new Nova II is a battery-powered phono stage with incredible flexibility and performance. The Nova II replaces the popular Nova Phonomena. Our Nova II battery-powered phono preamplifier, sharing improved chassis design of our MYDAC II, features dual-mono, discrete circuitry with extensive gain and loading flexibility, delivering the best sound in its price range. Like the Phonomena II and SuperNova II, the Nova II has rear panel accessible switches for easily accessible and highly flexible gain and loading adjustment. It features 2 rechargeable internal NiMH dual-mono battery packs with Smart Sensing auto recharge feature. All AC and charging circuits automatically disconnect when listening in battery mode. The Nova II features enhanced casework design and upgraded internal components.

The Musical Surroundings Nova II is a complete phonograph preamplifier with RIAA equalization that amplifies the output signal of a phono cartridge, either moving coil or moving magnet, up to a nominal "line level". The Nova II may be used with a receiver or an integrated amplifier. If you use separate components, a line level control unit (preamp) is required before the power amp, since there is no independent volume control for the Nova II. The Nova II's power supply is internal and connnects to the wall with the supplied wall mount transformer.

Black Cube: Cult object since 1995

Since the market introduction in 1995 the Black Cube phono stages by Lehmannaudio have become cult objects for analog oriented music lovers. Countless positive reviews and awards, and an unrivalled customer satisfaction worldwide document this truly exceptional success. The Black Cube is produced in small numbers and sonically superior to mass industry products.

The Lehmannaudio Black Cube phono stage is compatible with practically all available cartridges on the market from High Output MM to the lowest output MC cartridges. Apart from the standard switch settings there is one onboard slot that can be fitted with a custom impedance to supply perfect termination even for the most exotic cartridges. Since 2006 there is a separate hard wire custom impedance slot that needs no DIP-switch to be activated. Customization possibilities are infinite. No more need for expensive impedance plugs!

    Newly developed input stages

The newly developed input stages used in the Black Cube can also be found in top notch mixing consoles or in well known professional microphone preamps. The entirely passive RIAA equalization network is realized with high precision MKP capacitors. All resistors are of the low noise metal film variety. The switches for gain and load settings have gold plated connectors.

Because of the small outer dimensions the Black Cube can be placed next to the turntable. This minimizes loss due to cable lengths. The low noise regulated external power supply is connected with Neutrik XLR connectors to the dedicated DC power supply.

Lehmannaudio always pays special attention to details: the cable between power supply and audio section is shielded. The cases of both the power supply and the audio section are made of nonmagnetic materials and the case of the audio section is even equipped with a top cover coated with a special anti-resonance treatment.

Ultra High quality laminations, lower inductance and superior sound. These transformers were especially designed and tested with several low-output moving coil cartridges. These are very difficult transformers to construct and require a precision manufacturing process that can only be done by David Geren at CineMag.

Switchable for 1:20 (26 dB gain) or 1:40 (32 dB gain).

Into a standard 47k phono preamp, the effective input impedance of the low gain (1:20 ratio) is 118 ohms. At 1:40, the effective input impedance is 29 ohms.

The 1:40 ratio is perfect for those extremely low output cartridges including some by Audio Notes and Ortofon SPU.

Shielded Solid Silver Conductor Interconnect Cables

Bob's Devices continues to break the price barrier by offering top quality audiophile cables at 1/3 the price of competitive products. All our cables are hand crafted, fully balanced, individually tested and terminated with top of the line Cardas Audio SRCA and the new Cardas XLR connectors. For those of you who prefer RCA locking connectors, we offer the Vampire LRCA-8 Locking connectors with spring loaded center pin.. The interior connections are resistance soldered and dampened in pure Teflon wrap.

The silver and silver clad interconnects are terminated using WBT silver solder. As always, we back our cables with our 100% customer satisfaction guarantee. All Bob's interconnects feature a balanced type of architecture with internal conductors carrying the + and - signal with an additional braided conductive shield that is connected on one end only. This provides shielding effectively rejecting RF and EM interference without creating ground loops (say goodbye to hum).

Three lines of cables are offered: cables with Solid Silver conductors, cables with Silver-clad copper conductors and our limited production vintage cables constructed with copper conductors.

This Solid Silver custom terminated interconnect is Bob's top-of-the-line cable. It features a pair of pure silver 22 awg conductors and triple-shielding consisting of a silver plated OFC braided shield coupled to an Aluminum/Mylar shield and a Teflon PTFE shield. Covering the shield is a braided nylon sheath encased in a clear PVC outer jacket. Internally, this cable has 5 polyethylene air tubes separating and isolating the conductors.

Bob's silver cable is custom terminated in our lab with your choice of the best Cardas SRCA or the new Cardas XLR connectors.

Bob's custom terminated silver-clad crystal copper interconnects feature a balanced design architecture using Polyethylene insulation and a pair of silver plated copper conductors (SP-OFC) that are insulated with Foamed Polyethylene, and wrapped together by a double screen shielding consisting of a tinned OFC braided shield coupled to an Aluminum/Mylar shield. This wire architecture is modeled from the wire Koetsu uses to wrap their Platinum magnets. We believe the results will thrill you with exhilarating highs, tight bass, and romantic mids - very much the Koetsu paradigm. These interconnects not only shine with tube equipment but do especially well with a solid-state phono stage and preamp.

The silver clad copper wire uses the UP-OCCP (Ultra Pure - Ohno Continuous Casting Process) which is a continuous-casting method that was developed by Professor Ohno of the Chiba Institute in Japan. This wire is free from impurities (up to 99.99998% pure copper and silver). Accordingly, it is able to transmit electrical signals faster, and with less distortion than ordinary OFC and silver wires.

Bob silver-clad copper interconnects are custom terminated in our lab using the very best Cardas SRCA or the new Cardas XLR connectors. Vampire LC-8 locking connectors are also available.

The vp530 is a usb/tube phono preamp for use with moving-magnet and high output moving-coil cartridges. It includes a built in headphone amplifier, Burr-Brown A2D converter w/usb output, and RIAA curve/flat EQ. The vp530 is designed to amplify an RIAA equalized phono signal to a hi-level signal or provide a USB digital output. Since the unit utilizes tube circuitry, the resulting output signal is more warm and musical than solid state preamplifiers. The real kicker aside from the price and stellar sound is that it's manufactured in the US.

    Beautiful build quality

    Audiophile componentry

    Handcrafted in the USA

    Flexible cartridge loading options

Angling for an affordable yet world-class vacuum tube phono stage? The hunt is over! The spawn of the Manley Steelhead - one of the world's greatest phono preamplifiers - Stereophile Class A Recommended Component and The Absolute Sound's Preamp of the Year, has arrived. The Chinook epitomizes the sound of the Steelhead. Designed for the music lover, not the switch tweaker.

Like the Steelhead, each channel employs the two triode sections of a 6922 for amplifying duties with highly accurate passive RIAA equalization networks. In the Chinook, the signal is then directly coupled to another 6922 dual triode serving as the output driver in a White Follower configuration. This output stage circuit is our favorite because of its super-low output impedance and beefy current-driving capabilities. It can drive long cable lengths and difficult loads, tube or solid-state. Bring it on. No wimpy cathode followers here!

Setting up the Chinook couldn't be easier. There are two internal settings for optimal gain: 45dB for Moving-Magnet cartridges and 60dB for Moving-Coil cartridges. Set it and forget it! The back panel contains DIP switches for adjusting the input resistive and capacitance loading values. 31 possible options between 26 and 800 Ohms plus 47k Ohms and 7 capacitive loading choices between 50 pF and 350 pF provide flexibility to match any cartridge and fine tune the tone. Audiophile-grade and time-proven componentry is used throughout, embodying Manley's dedication to seductive sonics, combined with the reliability that professionals around the world depend on. At just about a quarter of the price of our revered Steelhead preamplifier, the Chinook's focus is on elegance of design, careful execution, efficient construction, and appreciable quality.

Designed and built in California, the Chinook exemplifies Manley's commitment to our local community and to a simple, clean, and quiet signal path. The Chinook demonstrates the supreme linearity of vacuum tubes while providing the flexibility needed to embrace any turntable setup. Everything from the most exotic 180 gram audiophile pressing to 25 cent thrift-store classics will be reproduced accurately and musically.

Don't let this one get away! Hook a Chinook!

    Lehmann Decade Phono Stage

Have a question about this product? Please email our audio advisor or call 1-877-929-8729 with any questions or concerns regarding your equipment purchase.

Lehmannaudio is has built a reputation and unrivalled customer satisfaction on the sound and build quality of phono stages. The ambitious Decade effectively fills the gap between the Black Cube SE II and the Lehmannaudio reference phono stage, the Silver Cube. In the Decade, like in all Lehmannaudio devices, top notch technology is used that normally can be found only in price ranges far above.

The input stages of the Decade can also be found in top notch mixing consoles and high class microphone preamps of professional studio electronics. The highly accurate, passive RIAA equalisation network is placed between two linear gain stages and uses precision MKP capacitors. This results in a very stable soundstage reproduction and pin point localisation of instruments.

The maximum gain of 66 dB is well enough for even very exotic low output MC cartridges. Impedance load adaption is practically infinite as with all Lehmannaudio phono stages: there is a free slot for a custom impedance so that every existing MC cartridge on the market can be loaded properly. Input capacitances are adjustable as well.

Soft bass roll-off filter and PWX II power supply.

The Decade is the first phono stage by Lehmannaudio that offers a Soft-Bass- Rolloff-Filter and gain selections accessible via toggle switches at the face plate. Both, gain and filter functions, are executed by studio grade relais inside the unit.

The Decade is powered by the PWX II, a power supply especially developed for the unit which is downward compatible with the PWX. This means that Black Cube audio sections can also be connected. The second power outlet at the PWX II is made especially for that purpose. The PWX II power supply with chokes at critical places powers the Decade with very clean DC power and - like the Silver Cube - is connected to the audio section via a shielded cable with Neutrik XLR plugs.

Have a question about this product? Please email our audio advisor or call 1-877-929-8729 with any questions or concerns regarding your equipment purchase.

The PM6006 is an upgraded successor of the multi-award-winning PM6005. We've retained the pre-amp and power-amp sections that exclusively feature discrete components - not a single IC in sight of the signal path. The PM6006 is upgraded for peak current at the amplifier stage, which makes it possible to refine the sound for you in much more detail.

You can connect this superb integrated amplifier directly to a vast range of digital sources and use its superior 24bit/192kHz high current CS4398 DAC to create an unbelievably high level of audio enjoyment with new media. The unit now includes 2 optical and 1 coaxial digital inputs (an additional optical input from the predecessor, PM6005), and the complete digital section is fully shielded by an extra metal housing to ensure that the digital stage has no effect on the analog signal.

All of the original features-such as five-line audio input including phono, two-pairs of gold-plated speaker connections with the convenience of bi-wiring, and a remote handset-are all still there. The lower impedance shielded Toroidal transformer, as well as customized components and unique Marantz HDAM modules care for powerful, dynamic and detailed original Marantz sound. In short, the new PM6006 is a new star with excellent genes.
