    For Life

    White Colored Vinyl

PHASES is a tight-knit and talented group of four friends, Z Berg, Alex Greenwald, Jason Boesel, and Michael Runion. True to their creativity and sense of humor, their record For Life is fun, but it also showcases their top-notch musicianship and dedication to next-level production. It fills a void in contemporary music of skilled musicians who don't take themselves too seriously-no surprise that they were inspired by bands of the early-80s, like Bananarama, Human League, and Tom Tom Club. But, while their album was created with the goal of making Blondie meets Thriller, PHASES lives decidedly in 2015.

Winner of the 2016 BRITs Critics Choice Award, Jack Garratt is a London-based multi-instrumentalist songwriter who combines elements from the alternative and electronic genres for a unique sound and live show. "Worry" and "Water" from his 2014 Remnants EP gained heavy traction online and tipped him as Zane Lowe's Next Hype, which he followed up with "The Love You're Given" and "Chemical" from his Synesthesiac EP in early 2015 to acclaim.

    Phases (Pre-Order)

How do you best describe Angel Olsen? From the lo-fi, sparse folk-melancholy of her 2010 EP, Strange Cacti, to the electrified, polished rock 'n' roll bursting from 2016's beloved and acclaimed MY WOMAN, Olsen has refused to succumb to a single genre, expectation, or vision. Impossible to pin down, Olsen navigates the world with her remarkable, symphonic voice and a propensity for narrative, her music growing into whatever shape best fits to tell the story.

Phases is a collection of Olsen's work culled from the past several years, including a number of never-before-released tracks. Fly On Your Wall, previously contributed to the Bandcamp-only, anti-Trump fundraiser Our First 100 Days, opens Phases, before seamlessly slipping into Special, a brand new song from the MY WOMAN recording sessions. Both How Many Disasters and Sans are first-time listens: home-recorded demos that have never been released, leaning heavily on Olsen's arresting croon and lonesome guitar.

The B-sides compilation is both a testament to Olsen's enormous musical range and a tidy compilation of tracks that have previously been elusive in one way or another. Balancing tenacity and tenderness, Phases acts as a deep-dive for longtime fans, as well as a fitting introduction to Olsen's sprawling sonics for the uninitiated.

    Phases and Stages

The legendary career of Texas-born music icon Willie Nelson has spanned six decades and stands as one of contemporary music's greatest legacies. Nelson first rose to fame as a Nashville-based songwriter, penning many now timeless standards including Crazy, a top hit for Patsy Cline. Feeling constrained by the Nashville music establishment, Willie relocated to Austin in the early 70s, where the melding of rock and country audiences made a huge impression on him. He began fusing folk and roots rock with a rebellious outlaw country flavor, inventing an authentic, stripped-down sound that remains vastly influential to this day. At this pivotal point in his artistic evolution, Nelson signed to Atlantic Records, delivering two signature albums revered as all-time masterpieces of his extensive repertoire, Shotgun Willie and Phases And Stages.

Phases And Stages is the first of many albums on which Willie strings songs together to tell a single story. The first half of the album recounts a break-up from the woman's point of view; the second half tells the same story, but from the man's perspective. Among the many outstanding tracks on this classic album are Sister's Coming Home, I Still Can't Believe You're Gone and Pretend I Never Happened.

    Pure Phase

1995's Pure Phase was Spiritualized's eagerly awaited second album. Pure Phase showcases both a more symphonic sound as well as a dreamy rock grandeur. Think of Brian Wilson and La Monte Young recording together and you'll have a good idea of the Spiritualized totality here. Pure Phase is both beautiful and innovative; more than just psychedelic, it's celestial.

180 Gram Audiophile Pressed At RTI

    From The Original Master Tapes

Faithful Reproduction Of The Original Artwork

Mike Condello did it all in four decades in the music business: serve as music director for two local Phoenix TV shows (Teen Beat and The Wallace & Ladmo Show), lead his own bands like Hub Cap and the Wheels, parody the Beatles with Commodore Condello's Salt River Navy Band, and even play with luminaries like Keith Moon, the Tubes, and Jackson Browne. In 1968, he also led his own band - which released the psychedelic masterwork Phase 1 on Scepter Records. Featuring a young Bill Spooner (pre-Tubes) on guitar, the album flows and trickles through your mind with more saturation than Lucy and her diamonds in the sky - picking up a few nuggets, boulders, and pebbles in the emergent violet haze. The phases of this pricey rarity - mastered from the original analog reels and pressed on lush 180 gram vinyl by RTI - are guaranteed to put your mind into a psychedelized headswirl trip that you'll want to take again and again.

Recorded in phases between Jim Eno's Public Hifi in Austin, producer Daniel Black's Bent Black studio in D.C., and the band's hometown of New Orleans, Heza finds Generationals more satisfied in songs that breathe and grow over time. These songs show restraint, with the hooks developing in the spaces between sounds and an attention to rhythms and textures revealing a more patient band willing to dig for deeper gems than in their previous work. Tracks like You Got Me and Put a Light On use minimalist electronic frameworks to match the intensity of more straightforward guitarwork on Spinoza and I Never Know, all of them placing the focus more on layers and arrangements than to forcing the hook. On Heza, Generationals aren't so much shedding their old skin as growing more comfortable in the one they've always inhabited.

    Soft Opening

We are excited to announce the second edition of Posse's Soft Opening LP featuring inverted color jacket artwork. Soft Opening follows Posse's 2012 self-titled album and subsequent EP of Smog covers. Band members Sacha Maxim, Paul Wittmann-Todd, and Jon Salzman recorded the album over an extended period of time in their homemade studio, with little external assistance.

Soft Opening is not intended to be slick and is also not intentionally rough. It is meant to be a degraded reflection of Posse: their optimism, their hopelessness, their limitations, filtered through their abilities and interests.

These songs are blankets designed with soft colors and graceful edges, made to lay over pits of anger and disappointment. They leap from mercurial, spacious leads to malevolent cross-eyed solos. The rhythm guitar drifts and phases while the bass tiptoes atop the drums. Delay by Boss and Akai. Distortion and fuzz provided by Rivera, ZVex, and Ibanez.

    Red Headed Stranger (Awaiting Repress)

Ranked 184/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Following the brilliant Phases And Stages, Willie's debut for Columbia is a brilliant concept album (nearly unheard of in country music) based around the song and story of the Red Headed Stranger. Although the song had been previously recorded by Eddy Arnold, it was Willie who would take the song to a much higher level by putting together an entire cycle of songs based around the tragic story of the Red Headed Stranger. Nelson's album is a stunning mix of original and classic songs. Among the highlights are his heartfelt interpretations of Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain, Time Of The Preacher and Can I Sleep In Your Arms by the prolific songwriter Hank Cochran.

Red Headed Stranger also features Willie's Family, his band, featuring his sister Bobbie (piano), Jody Payne (guitar, mandolin), the impeccable harmonica of Mickey Raphael and the ever-flawless Billy English on drums. The sound of the new Impex 180-gram LP, cut from the original analog master tapes by George Marino at Sterling Mastering, will become the new reference for clarity, realism and, above all, duplicating the inimitable sound of Willie's incredible singing voice.

Theres one rule in hip hop music that has transcended all of the phases in its four decade history: it doesnt matter what you do, but how you do it that really counts. This fact is no secret to Kev Brown (producer for Busta Rhymes, De La Soul, etc) who eschews the obscure in favor of certified soul classics as sample fodder for this project with emcee Kaimbr, The Alexander Green Project. Taking the familiar and reappropriating it into your own formula is no straightforward task but the soul-infused production on display with this project proves that in the right hands even the most recognizable of sources can be built into a fresh and engaging aesthetic. Kev Brown has those hands. Snippets of vocals punctuate sumptuous beats that are laced with chopped up strings, horn stabs, and intricate guitar licks to form a collection unified by source but ranging from the breezy to the bangin in terms of vibe. Kaimbr adds the final piece to this musical puzzle by combining a relaxed yet confident delivery with intricate rhyme schemes that nestle themselves assuredly into the beat.

    I'm Not There (Bob Dylan)

I'm Not There is a meta-biographical film re-imaging the life of Bob Dylan as portrayed by six different actors - Marcus Carl Franklin, Ben Whishaw, Heath Ledger, Christian Bale, Richard Gere, and Cate Blanchett - in six different phases of the artists life and career.

The 4LP I'm Not There set features songs from and inspired by this film. The new interpretations of Bob Dylan songs are performed by an eclectic cavalcade of acclaimed and celebrated contemporary musicians including Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam), Sonic Youth, Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Jack Johnson, Sufjan Stevens, Mark Lanegan and many others!

Many of the album's performances include backing from The Million Dollar Bashers, an ensemble created especially for 'Im Not There' by Sonic Youth guitarist Lee Ranaldo, featuring Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley, Television guitarist Tom Verlaine, Wilco bassist Nels Cline, guitarist Smokey Hormel, keyboardist John Medeski and long-time Bob Dylan band bassist Tony Garnier. Other tracks on the album feature the alternative-country band Calexico backing up artists.

I'm Not There includes two versions of the enigmatic title track, a new interpretation performed by Sonic Youth and the original Bob Dylan recording, a rare often-bootlegged outtake from The Basement Tapes sessions which has been unavailable on any official release for a long time.

Originally released in 1974, Big Fun presents music from three different phases of Miles Davis's early-seventies electric period.

Sides one and four (Great Expectations and Lonely Fire) were recorded three months after the Bitches Brew sessions and incorporate sitar, tambura, tabla, and other Indian instruments. They also mark the first time since the beginning of Miles Davis's electric period that he played his trumpet with the Harmon mute which had been one of his hallmarks, making it sound much like the sitar. This contributed to creating a very clear and lean sound, highlighting both the high and low registers, as opposed to the busier sound of Bitches Brew which placed more emphasis on the middle and low registers.

Ife was recorded after the 1972 On the Corner sessions, and the framework is similar to tracks from that record. It has a drum and electric bass groove and a plethora of musicians improvising individually and in combinations over variations on the hypnotic bassline.

Recorded in March 1970, Go Ahead John is an outtake from Davis's Jack Johnson sessions. The recording is a riff and groove-based, with a relatively sparser line-up of Steve Grossman on soprano saxophone, Dave Holland on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and John McLaughlin on guitar with wah-wah pedal.

    Far Cry

Far Cry finds multi-reedist Eric Dolphy in a transitional phase, relinquishing Parker's governing universal impact and diving into the next controversial phase that critics began calling anti-jazz. On this date Booker Little's lyrical trumpet and Jackie Byard's confident grasp of multiple piano styles (though both steeped in hard bop) were sympathetic to the burgeoning avant-garde approach that Dolphy displays, albeit sparingly, on this session.

Far Cry contains the initial performance of Dolphy's future jazz classic Miss Ann, along with his first recorded solo alto sax performance on Tenderly, in which Dolphy bridges the gap between the solo saxophone performances of Coleman Hawkins and Anthony Braxton.

    Autumn Response

A spartan folk/pop record filled with tinderbox intimacies, composed of some of the shortest songs ever recorded by Youngs. Autumn Response is a singer-songwriter album; his fingers slip over the steel strings with little feet and whispery toes, his gently prophetic songs evoke Roger Waters, and the folk phase play is sure to appeal to fans of Animal Collective's Sung Tongs.

Hailing from Tennessee, Cheap Time has been around in one incarnation or another since 2006. The nucleus has always been Jeffrey Novak, who writes and sings in addition to playing guitar and keyboards. The band began with members of the band Be Your Own Pet rounding out the lineup. Theirs was a sound of a teen punk band with more attitude than musicianship, owing more than a little to early Redd Kross. By the time Cheap Time recorded their debut album, the personnel had changed drastically and, in addition to improved musicianship, Novak brought in influences of '70s glam and power pop acts like Sparks and The Quick.

The band followed this with more lineup shuffles and a sophomore album, Fantastic Explanations (and Similar Situations), that was darker, moodier and more complex than its predecessor. Despite the many changes, however, Cheap Time has always been a sum of its parts. A quintessential ingredient is the low-fi bombast with which they scuzz up their otherwise lightweight brand of simplified 1970's glam punk, packing an impressive amount of adolescent snottiness into two-minute blasts of sound with both precision and melody.

Cheap Time are now back with their third and by far strongest record to date. Recorded in Novak's new home studio, Wallpaper Music distills perfectly all the phases through which the band has passed. Retaining both the punk moves and pop-damaged glam jams, the band delivers their most realized, cohesive record yet. Songs like "More Cigarettes" and "Another Time" are Aussie-esque punkers in a Saints-like vein, while "Underneath the Fruit Flies" shows that Novak has found a happy medium between his punk tendencies and his desire to experiment. This latest installment will satisfy anyone who has been keeping track of this band's trajectory and make them look forward to what might come next.
