    50th Anniversary Reissue

Features The New Stereo Mix On The First LP And An Alternative Version Of All 13 Tracks On The Second Vinyl Record, All Previously Unreleased

It was 50 years ago this June 1st when The Beatles' John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr astonished and delighted the world, ushering in the Summer of Love with Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, a groundbreaking masterwork that became popular music's most universally acclaimed album. To salute the occasion, The Beatles will release 'Sgt. Pepper' Anniversary Edition.

"It's crazy to think that 50 years later we are looking back on this project with such fondness and a little bit of amazement at how four guys, a great producer and his engineers could make such a lasting piece of art," says Paul McCartney.

"'Sgt. Pepper' seemed to capture the mood of that year, and it also allowed a lot of other people to kick off from there and to really go for it," Ringo Starr recalls.

The Anniversary Edition includes Martin's new stereo mix of the album, which was sourced directly from the original four-track session tapes and guided by the original, Beatles-preferred mono mix produced by his father, George Martin.

This expanded 180-gram 2LP vinyl package features the new stereo album mix on the first LP and adds a second LP with previously unreleased complete takes of the album's 13 songs, newly mixed in stereo and sequenced in the same order as the album.

The album's vibrant artwork, including its extravagant Pop Art cover which finds The Beatles surrounded by a crowd of heroes in a 3D collage, was created by Peter Blake and Jann Haworth in collaboration with the band. The original artwork is presented in a faithful reproduction of the album's original gatefold jacket.

"We hope you will enjoy the show"

Just as many ideas are sparked by chance, 'Sgt. Pepper' first sprang from a conversation between Paul and Beatles roadie Mal Evans on an airplane, when Mal's request to pass the salt and pepper was misheard by Paul as "Sgt. Pepper." The concept of who such a figure could be took root in Paul's mind, blooming with the imagination of The Beatles as an Edwardian era military band -- "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." The Beatles' creative wellspring for 'Sgt. Pepper' also flowed from such myriad sources as The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds album, a Victorian circus poster ("Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite!"), a TV commercial for breakfast cereal ("Good Morning Good Morning"), a picture drawn by John's young son, Julian ("Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds"), a teen runaway reported in the news ("She's Leaving Home'), and Hindu teachings ("Within You Without You").

"Lend me your ears and I'll sing you a song"

Using the standard four-track tape recording equipment of the day, The Beatles collaborated with producer George Martin to achieve "the impossible," as they dubbed it, to go as far out as they could with arrangements and new technology to realize their collective vision for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. As George Martin described it, "We were into another kind of art form where you were putting something down on tape that could only be done on tape." The Beatles clocked more than 400 hours in Abbey Road's Studio 2 to record the album, wrapping sessions in April 1967.

"I read the news today oh boy"

Upon its release on June 1, 1967, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band initially spent 148 weeks in the British chart, including a total of 27 weeks at number one. During its first U.S. chart run, the album held the number one spot for 15 of the 88 weeks it appeared in the Top 200. 'Sgt. Pepper' won four GRAMMY Awards®, including Album of the Year, and it remains one of the most influential and bestselling albums of all time. In 2003, the U.S. Library of Congress selected 'Sgt. Pepper' for the National Recording Registry, recognizing the album as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." 'Sgt. Pepper' tops Rolling Stone magazine's definitive list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time."

This is a true classic. Altoist Art Pepper is joined by an 11-piece band playing Marty Paich arrangements of a dozen jazz standards from the bop and cool jazz era. Trumpeter Jack Sheldon has a few solos, but the focus is very much on the altoist who is in peak form for this period. The reissue adds two additional versions of Walkin' and one of Donna Lee to the original program. Throughout, Pepper sounds quite inspired by Paich's charts which feature the band as an active part of the music rather than just in the background. Highlights of this highly enjoyable set include Move, Four Brothers, Shaw Nuff, Anthropology, and Donna Lee, but there is not a single throwaway track to be heard. Essential music for all serious jazz collections.

    50th Anniversary Reissue

'Sgt. Pepper' Presented with New Mixes in Stereo and 5.1 Surround Audio; Expanded with Previously Unreleased Session Recordings, Video Features & Special Packaging

Previously Unreleased 1992 Documentary Film, 'The Making of Sgt. Pepper,' Restored for Anniversary Edition's Super Deluxe Boxed Set

Ranked 1/500 On Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time!

To salute the occasion, The Beatles will release a lavishly presented 'Sgt. Pepper' Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition Box Set (4 CD/1 DVD/1 Blu-ray). The album is newly mixed by Giles Martin and Sam Okell in stereo and 5.1 surround audio and expanded with early takes from the studio sessions, including no fewer than 34 previously unreleased recordings.

"It's crazy to think that 50 years later we are looking back on this project with such fondness and a little bit of amazement at how four guys, a great producer and his engineers could make such a lasting piece of art," says Paul McCartney in his newly-penned introduction for the 'Sgt. Pepper' Anniversary Edition.

"'Sgt. Pepper' seemed to capture the mood of that year, and it also allowed a lot of other people to kick off from there and to really go for it," Ringo Starr recalls in the Anniversary Edition's book.

The Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Penny Lane," were among the first songs recorded during the 'Sgt. Pepper' sessions, which began in November 1966. Rather than being held for inclusion on the album, the two songs were released as a double A-sided single in February 1967. Amidst intense media speculation about the band's next move, the single bridged what was then considered a long gap between the Revolver album, released in August 1966, and 'Sgt. Pepper,' which followed 10 months later.

This is the first time Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band has been remixed and presented with additional session recordings, and it is the first Beatles album to be remixed and expanded since the 2003 release of Let It Be Naked. To create the new stereo and 5.1 surround audio mixes for 'Sgt. Pepper,' producer Giles Martin and mix engineer Sam Okell worked with an expert team of engineers and audio restoration specialists at Abbey Road Studios in London. All of the Anniversary Edition releases include Martin's new stereo mix of the album, which was sourced directly from the original four-track session tapes and guided by the original, Beatles-preferred mono mix produced by his father, George Martin.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition includes:

    • CD 1: New stereo album mix
    • CDs 2 & 3:

      - 33 additional recordings from the studio sessions, most previously unreleased and mixed for the first time from the four-track session tapes, sequenced in chronological order of their recording dates

      - A new stereo mix of "Penny Lane" and the 2015 stereo mix of "Strawberry Fields Forever"
    • CD 4:

      - Direct transfers of the album's original mono mix and the "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Penny Lane" singles

      - Capitol Records' U.S. promotional mono single mix of "Penny Lane"

      - Previously unreleased early mono mixes of "She's Leaving Home," "A Day In The Life," and "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" (a mix thought to have been erased from a tape in 1967, but discovered during archive research for the anniversary edition)
    • Discs 5 & 6 (Blu-ray and DVD):

      - New 5.1 surround audio mixes of the album and "Penny Lane" by Giles Martin and Sam Okell, plus their 2015 5.1 surround mix of "Strawberry Fields Forever"

      - High resolution audio versions of the new stereo mixes of the album and "Penny Lane" and of the 2015 stereo mix of "Strawberry Fields Forever"

      - Video features: 4K restored original promotional films for "Strawberry Fields Forever," "Penny Lane," and "A Day In The Life;" plus The Making of Sgt. Pepper, a restored, previously unreleased documentary film (broadcast in 1992), featuring insightful interviews with McCartney, Harrison, and Starr, and in-studio footage introduced by George Martin.

"A splendid time is guaranteed for all"

The album's vibrant artwork, including its extravagant Pop Art cover which finds The Beatles surrounded by a crowd of heroes in a 3D collage, was created by Peter Blake and Jann Haworth in collaboration with the band. The original artwork is showcased across the suite of Anniversary Edition releases, including the album's pull-out sheet of 'Sgt. Pepper' cutouts. Housed in a 12-inch by 12-inch box with lenticular artwork and two bonus posters, the six-disc Super Deluxe set is presented with a 144-page hardcover book. The book includes new introductions by Paul McCartney and Giles Martin, and chapters covering comprehensive song-by-song details and recording information, the design of the cover, the album's musical innovations and its historical context by Beatles historian, author and radio producer Kevin Howlett; composer and musicologist Howard Goodall; music producer and writer Joe Boyd; and journalists Ed Vulliamy and Jeff Slate, illustrated with rare photographs, reproductions of handwritten lyrics, Abbey Road Studios documentation, and original 'Sgt. Pepper' print ads.

    One Hot Minute

Following-up the band's 1991 masterpiece Blood Sugar Sex Magik and featuring Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro in place of the recently departed John Frusciante, the Red Hot Chili Peppers 1995 album One Hot Minute distinguishes itself immediately from the band's previous and future releases with a more heavy metal guitar dynamic and glimpses of psychedelic rock. Band turmoil and resurfacing drug problems also led to darker lyrical themes as heard on popular singles Warped, My Friends and Aeroplane. Although this incarnation of the band would be short lived, their collective output here doesn't lack in ambition and One Hot Minute finds the band maturing on many musical levels.

The rise to fame of the talented Impossibles is one which will never be described as such. Historically regarded as a legendary and iconic 70s era string-pop band in their native land of Thailand, the Impossibles became well known internationally for their covers of Western rock songs.

Having become nationally recognized in 1970 after winning the Thai Musicians Award for best professional band in the country (an award they would win the next two years), the Impossibles knew that they could ride their wave of success to international heights. In 1972 they left Thailand for an engagement in Honolulu, Hawaii the one off gig turned into a year long string of performances, followed by a seventh month European tour a move which raised the stature of the Impossibles to international fame.

In 1975, the Impossibles became the first band in the history of Thailand to sign a recording contract with an international firm (Phonogram). Hot Pepper an all English language recording, was also the first such album recorded overseas by a Thai pop group. In addition to rock and pop, the band's sound frequently crossed over into funk, R&B, country and folk. Two cove rs of Kool and the Gang tracks (Give It Up and Love The Life You Live) appear on their heralded 1975 album Hot Pepper.

Get On Down is proud to present The Impossibles 1975 album Hot Pepper featuring audio completely remastered from the original audio tapes.

Art Pepper + Eleven: Modern Jazz Classics

A true classic, Art Pepper + Eleven: Modern Jazz Classics finds altoist Art Pepper joined by an 11-piece band playing Marty Paich arrangements of a
dozen jazz standards from the bop and cool jazz era. Trumpeter Jack Sheldon takes a few choice solos, but the focus is very much on Pepper who is in
peak form, sounding quite inspired by Paich's charts- which feature the band as an active part of the music rather than just in the background. Highlights
of this thoroughly enjoyable set include Move, Four Brothers, Shaw 'Nuff, Anthropology, and Donna Lee, but there is not a single clunker to be

    50th Anniversary Reissue

CD Features The New 'Sgt. Pepper' Stereo Mix, Complete With The Original U.K. Album's "Edit For LP End" Run-Out Groove

The album's vibrant artwork, including its extravagant Pop Art cover which finds The Beatles surrounded by a crowd of heroes in a 3D collage, was created by Peter Blake and Jann Haworth in collaboration with the band.

    Smack Up

Art Pepper left a legacy of innumerable appearances on records, but his sessions for Contemporary always seemed to find him in the best company and in the best shape. Here his impassioned alto sax is appropriately applied to the compositions of six saxophonists, among them Benny Carter, Ornette Coleman, and Pepper himself. The presence of Jack Sheldon in a rare performance as a small-group trumpeter was another important factor in the album's success.

The soundstage is spacious and the imaging precise. Pepper is almost in the room (separated by only the thinnest of curtains); you can practically see the air swirling through his alto sax. Pete Jolly's piano is a bit closed-off (as if the lid were shut), but Jimmy Bond's bass thumps and Frank Butler's drumset smacks and sizzles. -- Fred Kaplan, The Absolute Sound, March 2006

Art Pepper's 'Las Cuevas De Mario' is a wonderfully subtle and convoluted track, built entirely on a subtly insistent rhythm motif that's set up by the bass and piano, before the drums start to add accent and prompts. Against the background foundation Pepper's sax and Jack Sheldon's trumpet play beautiful chorus and call and response melodies. Superbly understated, there's a lot going at once yet the instrumentation stays sparse. A longtime collectible record -- Roy Gregory, Hi-Fi+, Issue 45

    Picture of Heath (Pure Pleasure)

First released under the title "Playboys" in 1956 it was then re-released under the title "Picture Of Heath" in 1961 perhaps owing to the fact it carried the same name as a popular men's magazine.

This was the third session together of the dynamic duo of Chet Baker and Art Pepper the previous two having been unequivocal successes. Baker and Pepper have an instinctual rapport that yields outstanding interplay.

These thoroughly enjoyable and often high-energy sides are perfect for bop connoisseurs as well as mainstream jazz listeners.

    Musicians:

    • Chet Baker (trumpet)

    • Art Pepper (alto saxophone)

    • Phil Urso (tenor saxophone)

    • Carl Perkins (piano)

    • Curtis Counce (bass)

    • Lawrence Marable (drums)

    Recording: October 1956

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Mother's Milk

1989's Mother's Milk is the album that broke the Red Hot Chili Peppers into the rock mainstream. Despite suffering the loss of drummer Jack Irons and guitarist Hillel Slovak a year earlier, founding members Anthony Kiedis and Flea found exceptional replacements in Chad Smith and John Frusciante. A cover of Stevie Wonder's Higher Ground and a tribute to Slovak, Knock Me Down, were both big MTV successes, as were such other highlights as Taste the Pain (featured prominently in the movie Say Anything), Good Time Boys, Subway to Venus, Magic Johnson and Sexy Mexican Maid.
