    Blue Note Reissue

As much as I'd love to relay all kinds of anecdotes about the challenges Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray encounter during the mastering sessions, I witness none. These boys know the sound of the facility and the Van Gelder masters like the backs of their handsBack home a month later, I unpack some test pressings Chad Kassem has sent meI hear the most realistic-sounding drums ever reproduced by my system. It's as though I'm sitting at the point of creation, experiencing the same high that brought such gifted musicians together as one. Steve Hoffman, Kevin Gray, Chad Kassem, and Don MacInnis have done Rudy Van Gelder and his Blue Note artists proud. Jason Victor Serinus, Stereophile, April 2008

Paul Chambers' first album features an amazing lineup of John Coltrane, Donald Byrd, Kenny Burrell, Horace Silver and Philly Joe Jones. A classic Blue Note session of what might be considered cerebral jazz.

Doxy present a picture disc reissue of John Coltrane's Blue Train, originally released in 1957. Blue Train is Coltrane's third session as a leader and one of the most iconic jazz albums of all-time. Featuring Curtis Fuller, Lee Morgan, Paul Chambers, Kenny Drew, and Philly Joe Jones, this is an absolutely essential jazz album and the title track is one of the most celebrated in jazz history, maybe matched only in recognition by Miles Davis's So What or Dave Brubeck's Take Five.

The great tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin is heard in top form on this near-classic quartet set. Assisted by pianist Sonny Clark, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Kenny Dennis, Griffin is exuberant on The Congregation (which is reminiscent of Horace Silver's The Preacher), thoughtful on the ballads, and swinging throughout. It's recommended for bop collectors.

    Blue & Sentimental

Ike Quebec's timeless, big-toned tenor was a frequent visitor to Rudy Van Gelder's studio in the early sixties. But this album from December 1961 with spare, soulful backing from Grant Green, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones is his masterpiece. The leaner setting works perfectly, evoking an aura of relaxation and monumentality, with the deepest blue of accents.

Blues In The Night (Awaiting Repress)

Although Sonny Clark was just 31 years old when he passed away, he still managed to carve out his place in history as one of jazz music's top pianists. Blues in the Night, recorded in December 1958 for Blue Note, was a trio session featuring Sonny Clark on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Wes Landers on drums. Blues in the Night is an extremely rare LP that was shelved until 1979, when it finally released as part of the Japanese Blue Note series by King Records. The session finds the piano trio playing an array of standard tunes that were originally intended for release as jukebox singles. The final track, 'Gee Baby, Ain't I Good to You (Alt. Take),' recorded in November 1958, was taken from Sonny Clark's Art of the Trio session, also recorded at the Van Gelder studio, and featuring Jymie Merritt instead of Paul Chambers on bass.

Title Track Stands as First-Ever Modal Composition Even as Blues and Hard-Bop Flavors Make LP One of Davis Most Explosive Affairs

Miles Davis created just one studio album with his original sextet. He made every moment count. Pairing with Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones, the trumpeter not only laid the groundwork for the modalism that immediately followed but tailored a genuine modern-jazz masterwork laden with performances among the most explosive of his distinguished career. Due to its sandwiched position between the more famous Round About Midnight and epochal Kind of Blue, Milestones remains, for too many music lovers, an overlooked classic.
