    Paranoid Cat

Paranoid Cat is Philadelphia guitarist Chris Forsyth's third solo album and the first for Family Vineyard. It is a sprawling, harmonically-charged side-long suite backed by a clutch of compositions merging raw and delicate American roots traditions. The kaleidoscopic arrangements of Paranoid Cat are a leap from the stripped down attack on Forsyth's hotly acclaimed 2009 Dreams - to be reissued by Family Vineyard later this year -- with hints of John Fahey's America, Richard Lloyd's work with Television, John Lee Hooker, and Van Dyke Parks all being identifiable somewhere in the swirling mix.

    Welcome To Success

What is success? And what's left after the party's over? Backed by the lush, vivid beats of Canadian producer Factor, Bay Area emcee Kirby Dominant ponders the perils of self-actualization on their third LP together as Paranoid Castle. Are the trappings of success smoke screens for inner turmoil or are they success itself? Do the drugs and women provide joy or fleeting escape? How long can one keep clawing out at temporary pleasures in the wake of unresolved anguish? Kirby's narratives reflect upon these and a host of other grown man queries. And if the answers don't come, what does come, is hope. "If the sun comes back to town, I want to be around," Kirby sings on the catchy, ebullient hook to "Fear of Missing Out." He maintains his sense of humor in the face of being broke on "Laugh Out Loud," drops a hilarious one-liner here and there on "Cemetery," and ands traces of positivity through gritted teeth. Welcome To Success, the culmination of a 13-year working relationship, showcases two seasoned vets playing on each other's strengths and making a grand artistic statement. Kirby continues to sharpen his delivery and singing chops with each release, often rapping and crooning on the same track and shifting moods between verse and chorus. Incorporating live instrumentation and samples, Factor's dynamic beats accentuate the emcee's ruminations while making statements of their own. Welcome To Success is grown man music, unafraid to ask painful questions and wise enough to make you laugh if you don't like the answers.

Creative Adult comes from the diverse musical breeding ground of California's
North Bay Punk scene. The band's sonic blast careens between the harsh, noisy
punk of Scratch Acid and Gang of Four while carrying the brooding emotion
of Joy Division's darkest moments. This debut full-length is a grimey, paranoid
acid trip through 80s west coast punk. Engineered and produced by Efrim
Menuck of Godspeed You! Black Emperor at Hotel 2 Tango Studios in Montreal.

    Exploded Drawing

Originally released in April of 1996, Exploded Drawing was generally received as Polvos White Album, the moment when the band finally kicked off its shoes, cracked the studio windows and unleashed a long suite of songs showcasing the bands true range. This double LP gives it all up: paranoid blues rants, Delhi-via-the Ozarks hoedowns, spaghetti western lopers, carnivalesque boogie, a blazing finale and as always, that guitar sound. Its just a little off, twisted, tweaked, coming at us from some realm we still havent located yet and probably never will.

    Judgement Night

The 1993 film Judgment Night was basically suburbia's paranoid view of inner-city life, where the slightest misstep (such as trying to take a shortcut to a boxing match) has fateful, if not fatal, consequences. And what better music to accompany this middle-class nightmare than a hybrid of the music suburbanites seemed most afraid of; Rap and Rock. It turned out to be quite a fruitful collaboration; while the film bombed, the soundtrack went gold.

Judgment Night spawned four singles: Biohazard & Onyx's 'Judgment Night', Helmet & House Of Pain's 'Just Another Victim', Teenage Fanclub & De La Soul's 'Fallin'' and Faith No More & Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E.'s 'Another Body Murdered', and it also features highly sought after collaboration between Pearl Jam & Cypress Hill. Ice-T and Slayer manage to thrash it out on an unsurpassed level, while Sonic Youth & Cypress Hill have that slightly paranoid sound you get from loving Mary Jane a little too much.

Available on vinyl for the first time since its original release!

    The Sophtware Slump

The Control Group is proud to release the first 3 albums by Grandaddy on vinyl. Under The Western Freeway has never been released on vinyl in the U S. and The Sophtware Slump and Sumday are both long out-of-print collectors gems.

Guided by Jason Lyttle's vision of spacey, mid-fi country-rock, Modesto, CA's Grandaddy unites a mess of guitar-based, late-90's fringe-music into coherent statements about humanity and technology that at times sounds a lot like OK Computer or a lower-fidelity Soft Bulletin.

Mixed in an unselfconscious manner, these influences underline Lyttle's desire to have the music convey the era's confusion. So the epic mid-tempo opener He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's the Pilot recalls the stilted pace of Paranoid Android, Broken Household Appliance National Forest is a metaphorically lumbering rocker whose sounds spill over like punky stoners doing Black Sabbath, and Chartsengrafs rocks out in first-rate Vivadixie fashion. The Sophtware Slump is the sum of its grand parts.

Big Harp is the by-product of a three-year whirlwind for husband-and-wife duo Chris Senseney (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Stefanie Drootin-Senseney (bass, backing vocals). The end result is White Hat, the debut full-length for Omahas Saddle Creek. The songs range from gun-in-her-garter saloon narratives and paranoid soul struts to intimate ballads of quiet resignation and open-hearted love songs. The recordings are raw and un-fussed over, with the spirited energy and honest emotion of live performance.

Drawing from the classic country and folk of Senseneys childhood and anchored by Drootins rock-solid rhythms and indie-punk roots, White Hat contains echoes of artists from Townes Van Zandt to Nick Cave, Willie Nelson to Captain Beefheart. Fitting for a couple in no rush to slow down, White Hat was recorded at LAs Nightingale studios in a mere three days. Rilo Kiley bassist Pierre de Reeder recorded the album and drums were handled by Chris Phillips.

    Still Bill

It's rich, subtly layered music, but its best attribute is that it comes on easy, never sounding labored or overworked.
In fact, it takes several spins of the album to realize just how versatile Withers is on 'Still Bill', to hear how he makes intricate, funky rhythms sound as effortless and simple as the album's best-known song, the gospel-tinged inspirational anthem Lean on Me.

That's the genius behind Withers' music: it's warm and easily accessible, but it has a depth and complexity that reveals itself over numerous plays.

Then there's the quality of the songwriting, which is as assured on the grooving Lonely Town, Lonely Street as it is on the suspicious, paranoid Who Is He (And What Is He to You)? or Use Me, where he happily submits to being used by his object of affection.

This high level of songwriting is sustained throughout the record, making this probably his best record ever.

With a pedigree that boasts all three members of New York's cult doom band Unearthly Trance plus founding Electric Wizard and Ramesses bassist/guitarist Tim Bagshaw, Serpentine Path's self-titled debut should immediately top any doom-metal fan's want-list. Sounding like way more than the sum of its parts, Serpentine Path is an absolutely crushing album which both references and reinterprets its members' previous bands, but with a decidedly more punishing death-metal approach. Vicious vocals combine with downtuned guitars that rip out punishingly killer riffs to create an overall evil vibe that's equal parts Paranoid and Severed Surival. Serpentine Path is way more than just a super group of underground icons, they are one of the best new death/doom outfits to emerge in years!

    Run The Jewels

    Gold Yellow Colored Vinyl

This gold vinyl re-issue of Run the Jewels's 2013 self-titled classic was named Pitchfork's "Best New Music" upon release. Killer Mike's baritone drawl contrasts El-P's hyper flow perfectly, and with support from names like Big Boi, Until the Ribbon Breaks, and Prince Paul, this hip-hop album delivers. Tracks feature Banana Clipper, Job Well Done, and Twin Hype Back.

Metacritic gives this album universal acclaim, and critics agree: it's accessible with its duo taking on crooked politicians, fake rappers and religious hypocrites through aggressive flow and paranoid rhyme, and its fun, affable vibe is no sign of weakness.

    The W

Numbered, Limited Edition On Crystal Clear Vinyl

The W is the third studio album by the world's baddest Hip Hop group Wu-Tang Clan. Released in 2000, the album debuted at number 5 on the Billboard 200, and instantly topped the R&B/Hip Hop Albums Chart after release. Containing the hit Gravel Pit, the album was certified Platinum a few months later.

After their 1997 album WU-TANG FOREVER and several solo projects, The W has a more rugged, less polished sound than most Wu-Tang related albums from that era. Group mastermind RZA produced The W with roughed up Soul samples and tight, tough beats. Paranoid kung fu samples and bizarre sounds drive the fantastic nightmare. The back-to-basics approach (the group's massive debut ENTER THE WU-TANG comes to mind) works so well because it puts the focus back on some of the best rappers in the game.

The album also features guest appearances from Isaac Hayes, Redman, Nas, Busta Rhymes and Snoop Dogg.

    Afraid Of Heights

Straight from the dungeons of L.A., Wavves deliver Afraid Of Heights, their fourth album. Now a duo consisting of guitarist Nathan Williams and bassist Stephen Pope, they sound bigger, brasher, and shockingly more professional than ever on Afraid Of Heights which positions the band to take their rightful place amongst the pop-punk gods. You know the story by now. Bored dude in his parents' tool shed-turned-room with no insulation and a record stuck to a hole in the wall to keep the mice out turns on a four-track recorder, fucks around and ends up with two of the oddest, noisiest, and downright catchiest albums in recent memory.

The product of more than a year of writing and recording, Afraid Of Heights expands the Wavves sound while remaining true to the band's original vision - it was created with absolutely no label involvement, a specter that nearly derailed King Of The Beach. Working with producer John Hill (known for his work with M.I.A. and Santigold, as well as with hip-hop acts such as Nas and the Wu-Tang Clan), the band found a willing party in creating what they felt was the truest expression of what they wanted. As for the Afraid Of Heights sessions themselves, Williams paid for them out-of-pocket, explaining his reasoning with, In doing so, I had no one to answer to. We recorded the songs how and when we wanted without anybody interfering, and that's how it's supposed to be.

Lyrically, Williams took the focus less off of his own melancholy and out into the world, with songs that dealt with crooked preachers (Sail To The Sun), relationships (Dog) and killing cops (Cop). Even when he reaches outside his own damaged psyche, Williams is still making Wavves songs, saying, The general theme of the record is depression and anxiety, being death-obsessed and paranoid of impending doom. I feel like the narration is almost schizophrenic if you listen front to back; every word is important, even the constant contradictions and lack of self-worth. That's all a part of this record-questioning everything not because I'm curious, but because I'm paranoid. That paranoia manifests itself on many of the album's best tracks, such as the spacey drones and bummazoid vibes of the Weezer-referencing, getting-drunk-because-you-can't-bring-yourself-to-care-vibey Afraid Of Heights, or the string-aided I Can't Dream, which rounds the record out with the optimistic, I can finally sleep, before subverting itself with, But I can't dream. With their biggest and boldest-sounding record yet, Wavves might have finally come into their own, a fully-realized punk rock force in both sound and vision.

    Over The Edge

Remastered From Original Tapes By Greg Sage

    Deluxe, Tip-On Sleeve

The bleak, hard-driven third LP by the Wipers (originally released in 1983) offers Greg Sage at his most chased and breathless, lashing out with sharp staccato notes as if melody were his only defense. While their debut LP provided the blueprint for grunge, and their second album recast the band as one of Americas premier postpunk bands, its Over The Edge that best exemplifies the Wipers sound. The jagged, effortless guitar lines, the paranoid lyrics and raw-throated vocals and the taut, unified rhythms that define their sound bleed together most clearly on this LP, and it stands
as both the best entry point for new fans and the most prevalent favorite of diehards.

Since Jackpot Records began our Wipers vinyl reissues in 2006, weve been inundated with requests for a reissue of Over The Edge. After two years of labor, including an immaculate remaster from the original tapes by Greg Sage, we are proudto present Over the Edge, pressed on audiophile grade vinyl and packaged in a deluxe, tip-on sleeve.

    The President's Dead (Awaiting Repress)

The President's Dead is the first release by Okkervil River since 2005's masterful Black Sheep Boy project. Having spent most of 2005 touring and writing, the band and Jagjaguwar wanted to get this single out before 2006 came to a close. Locked in the grooves of this limited-edition vinyl-only release is what might be Okkervil River's most accessible and most contentious song, The President's Dead. A two-minute and forty-two second serving of alternative historical fiction camouflaged as a folk anthem tarted up as a pop single that never was, The President's Dead empathetically depicts the shock felt by a young Republican upon hearing news of an assassination over the radio, its lyrics shifting sneakily from images of public horror to those of private tenderness as its music performs a similarly schizoid leap. Meanwhile, sequestered away on side 2, the lyric that bobs atop the loping, twangy pop of The Room I'm Hiding In depicts a paranoid flight from vastly more powerful pursuers determined to exact the most severe punishment.

    Deltron 3030

The super group Deltron 3030 is composed of producer Dan the Automator, rapper Del tha
Funkee Homosapien and DJ Kid Koala and sometimes features guest artists who also take
on varying futuristic pseudonyms. Originally released in 2000 on the now-defunct 75ARK
record label, this Hip Hop concept album was released the same year as the Gorillaz first
12 and is on a similar plane. Following the release of Deltron 3030, all three members
participated in the Gorillaz self-titled debut album.

With Del aka Deltron Zero on vocals, Dan the Automator aka The Cantankerous Captain
Aptos on production, and Kid Koala aka Skiznoid the Boy Wonder on turntables, this album
takes the listener on a paranoid journey set in a dystopian year 3030 dealing with viruses, the
apocalypse, an oppressive government, and a war waged against a huge company called
the Corporate Bank of Time that rules the universe, all to the well-crafted and consistent
musical backing of the Automator. Appearances by Damon Albarn (The Gorillaz, Blur), Prince
Paul, Peanut Butter Wolf, DJ Money Mark, Paul Barman, Mark Bell (Bjork, production), Sean
Lennon, and Mr. Lif compliment Dels vocal style and add the right amount of flavor to this
    classic period piece.

    Dreams

Dreams is a reissue of Chris Forsyth's second solo album. In 2009 Forsyth pressed up 100 LPs for a European tour and created quite an uproar of approval by the heads who managed to score a copy. Now available again, Dreams rightfully shows Forsyth at the creme of American guitarists who blend masterful skill of country/blues with sometimes violent aggression or mind-bending arrangements.

Dreams was recorded and mixed between 2007 and 2009 and catches Forsyth in the studio layering acoustic and electric guitars and organ with contributions from his guests, creating four pieces which are full of the raw power and intuitive delicacy that characterizes his live shows still. Dreams crosses free-wheeling minimalist rock balladry and anarcho- improv surrealism with a fearless approach to beauty in a deeply psychedelic landscape. It features contributions from his Peeesseye bandmates Jaime Fennelly (synth on one track) and Fritz Welch (drums and vocals on another) as well as the soaring trumpet work of Nate Wooley and organ, saxophone, and snare drum overdubs by another longtime collaborator of Forsyth's in Phantom Limb & Bison, Shawn Edward Hansen. This is Forsyth's second solo record, preceding Paranoid Cat, which was released by Family Vineyard earlier in 2011.

I Don't Like Shit, I Don't Go Outside: An Album By Earl Sweatshirt

I Don't Like Shit, I Don't Go Outside: An Album by Earl Sweatshirt is the second studio album by American rapper Earl Sweatshirt.

On his first studio album, 2013's Doris, the most mysterious member of L.A. shock-rap gremlins Odd Future proved himself by exploring real-life alienation. On his excellent second LP, Earl Sweatshirt keeps deepening his game - spooling out dense, mordant rhymes over zombifically blunted tracks as he somehow sucks you into his sunless reality. It's amazing that music so claustrophobic can be this engrossing.

As always, Sweatshirt is most compelling when he's going toe to toe with his own demons. I spent the day drinking and missing my grandmother, he raps on Huey, perfectly summing up the music's desolate vibe. Mantra opens with some maniac grandstanding (With a cleaver and a .30 and some twisted weed/I pick one and let the crimson leak), then slides into a downhearted breakup song. Grief is a harrowing shut-in snapshot: I just want my time and my mind intact/When they both gone, you can't buy 'em back. At just 10 songs in a half-hour, I Don't Like Shit is surprisingly concise - even if it's sometimes dark and paranoid enough to make There's a Riot Goin' On sound like the Three's Company theme. And who needs more? Even a half-hour with Earl is enough to leave you with a lifetime of creepy memories.
