    Far Beyond Driven

By the time Pantera released 1994's Far Beyond Driven, they were the most popular metal band on the planet, and as did its predecessor, Vulgar Display of Power, the album shot straight to the top of the Billboard charts. Amazingly enough, Far Beyond Driven features an even heavier and more extreme sound than on previous releases due to Dimebag Darrell's down-tuned and heavier sludgy guitar playing and Phil Anselmo's increasingly self-biographical lyrics. Highlights include I'm Broken, Becoming, Shedding Skin and Slaughtered.

    Vulgar Display Of Power

1992's Vulgar Display of Power is arguably the heaviest album ever to debut at # 1 on the Billboard charts and it proved that heavy metal still had its place in the era of alternative rock. True to its title, Vulgar Display of Power is a raw and unrelenting depiction of rage and hostility, brought to a head by the pummeling guitar riffs of Dimebag Darrell and the militaristic snarl of Phil Anselmo. Songs like Fucking Hostile, Walk, This Love and Mouth for War remain some of the most popular songs in Pantera's impressive arsenal.

    Cowboys From Hell

Pantera's 1990 major label debut Cowboys From Hell was as heavy as anything of its day and it served as both the band's breakthrough and a great influence on the state of metal music. Featuring the guitar virtuosity of Dimebag Darrell and the vocal ferocity of Phil Anselmo front and center, Cowboys From Hell turned Pantera into the preeminent metal band of the early '90s and put the remnants of the '80s metal scene to rest. Highlights include Cemetery Gates, Psycho Holiday, Primal Concrete Sledge and the title track.

    The Great Southern Trendkill

The 8th studio album by Pantera, originally released in 1996, reached number 4 on the Billboard 200 chart. Due to tension among the bandmembers, Phil Anselmo recorded the vocals alone at Trent Reznor's Nothing Studios in New Orleans while the rest of the group recorded at Chasin Jason Studios in Dallas, Texas.

The Great Southern Trendkill features some of the fastest tempos and most down-tuned guitars that the band ever recorded. It also has a more experimental nature to its songs, such as the acoustic guitar and keyboard-laden Suicide Note Pt. I.

Unlike Pantera's first three major label albums, the vocals are often double tracked and layered to create a more demonic effect. An example of this can be heard in the chorus of 13 Steps to Nowhere, when Phil Anselmo's singing voice is backed up by high pitched screaming, done by Seth Putnam.

    Burn My Eyes

    180 Gram Gold Colored Vinyl

    Limited To 1500

Released to massive European acclaim, Machine Head's full-length debut, Burn My Eyes, successfully bridges the gap between second-generation Bay Area thrash (Testament, Death Angel, etc.) and the modern-day Pantera school of hard knocks. Produced by underground stalwart Colin Richardson, Burn My Eyes is a bone-shattering exercise in brutality that gives Pantera's classic, Vulgar Display of Power, a good run for its money. A veteran of the Bay Area thrash scene, guitarist/vocalist Robb Flynn emerges as Machine Head's anchor. As guitar player of the riff-heavy yet vocally challenged band Vio-Lence, Flynn had already distinguished himself as a riff-making machine on tracks like Serial Killer and Kill on Command. Interestingly, with the release of Burn My Eyes, every effort was made to cover up Flynn's involvement with his ex-bandmates. Looking back at it, it's easy to understand why. Because of the quick word of mouth in the underground metal community, comparisons to his ex-bandmates would have limited the impact of the record, possibly thwarting its merits. If Vio-Lence held promise, Machine Head was a different proposition all together. Anthems like Davidian are monstrous slabs of metal that, by far, eclipse anything Flynn had previously done. Nevertheless, Burn My Eyes is a classic debut and one that helped launch a huge European groundswell for the band that would result in a tour as Slayer's support act. A few months later, the Head would return and headline the very same venues in which they'd opened for Slayer.

    History Of Hostility

History Of Hostility is a nine-track Pantera primer that includes some of the band's most legendary tracks from all five studio albums on Vinyl.

Pantera was an American heavy metal band from Arlington, Texas. The group was formed in 1981 by the Abbott brothers - drummer Vinnie Paul and guitarist Dimebag Darrell - along with vocalist Terry Glaze. Bassist Rex Brown joined the band the following year, replacing the original unofficial bass guitarist Tommy D. Bradford. Having started as a glam metal band, Pantera released four albums during the 1980s. Looking for a new and heavier sound, Pantera replaced Glaze with Phil Anselmo in 1986. With its fifth album, 1990's Cowboys from Hell, Pantera introduced a groove metal sound. The sixth album, 1992's Vulgar Display of Power, exhibited even heavier sound. Far Beyond Driven (1994) debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.

    Inquisition Symphony

Cello-playing Finnish quartet Apocalyptica's sequel to their well-received first album departs from the safe haven of Metallica covers (only four tracks) and introduces material by other heavy metal bands, and even a few originals.

Of the latter, Harmageddon is probably the standout track, and while most Metalli-fans will be eager to hear the group's rendition of the smash hit One, the song takes a backseat to inspired renditions of earlier classics such as For Whom the Bell Tolls and Fade to Black.

As for the other bands covered, the arrangements of Pantera's Domination and Sepultura's Refuse/Resist are rather dull, but Faith No More's From Out of Nowhere works surprisingly well, and the group's performance of the album's incredibly complex title track (another Sepultura original) is simply stunning.

    Reinventing The Steel

One of the preeminent metal bands of all time, Pantera put to rest any and all remnants of the '80s metal scene, almost single-handedly demolishing any notion that hair metal, speed metal, power metal, et al., were anything but passÉ.

As one of metal's most ferocious acts, with one of its most insanely devoted audiences, it's clear as an empty whiskey bottle that Pantera's impact and influence on heavy music is still being felt.

Lyrics about the band itself can be found through most of this album (We'll Grind That Axe For a Long Time) but also includes songs about their fans (You've Got To Belong To It).

Reinventing The Steel will all be reissued on 180-gram vinyl. Heavy Metal thrashers Pantera broke up in 2003. Guitarist Dimebag Darrell was the victim of a tragic shooting in 2004 while playing with his band Damage Plan.

Dimebag Darrell called the band's most recent studio album, 2000's Reinventing The Steel, a best-of in its own right, a mix of elements from the albums that had preceded it. Even the closing epic, I'll Cast A Shadow, was a monster. Usually when we write, the songs come together really fast, says Dime. But sometimes, you'll be drilling at one for hours before you realize it ain't workin'. This was one of those. So we put it on the back burner, finished up all the other tunes, then went back to give it one more pull. We rearranged it, threw a few new parts in, and it really brought it to life. I think it ended up being the baddest-ass song on the whole record.

    Eyehategod (Awaiting Repress)

Legendary New Orleans gods of sludge, excess and mayhem EYEHATEGOD release their new, self-titled album.

Mixed by Sanford Parker, Eyehategod will feature the final recordings of EYEHATEGOD drummer Joey LaCaze, who passed away last August of respiratory failure. He also suffered from severe long-term asthma. He has since been replaced by Aaron Hill, who comes by way of New Orleans' local acts MISSING MONUMENTS and MOUNTAIN OF WIZARD.

In a recent interview with NPR, EYEHATEGOD frontman Mike IX Williams stated about the band's forthcoming album: We started out the recording with Billy Anderson. He recorded the drums, bass and some guitar, but that was a mess. There was a documentary crew in there filming, and it was distracting away from our time recording. Jimmy [Bower, guitar] was having a couple problems at the time too, waiting for his kid to be born, so it was a weird time to be in the studio. We ended up using just Joey's drum tracks from Billy. He's awesome - I love him and there's no hard feelings, but we just wanted to finish it somewhere else. We got Steve Berrigan to come out to where I live two hours outside of NOLA, and redid the bass and the guitars. Phil Anselmo [PANTERA, DOWN] gave me some ideas for the vocals, like how we did the ARSON ANTHEM record; me and him work well together.

Asked if EYEHATEGOD ever considered giving up following Joey's passing, Mike said: It was never an option as far as I'm concerned. I don't think it was for anybody else either.

This all happened at the end of September, when we'd just gotten back from a six-week tour of Europe. He's had pretty bad asthma ever since I've known him, and in Europe he was having these weird sleep apnea things when he was sleeping. It was a breathing issue, a respiratory thing, but I don't know; I'm not a doctor. So when we got back, that's when he passed away, so there was a little bit of time in there when we had to think - 'We've got shows booked. What do we do?' We did have to cancel probably 50% of them, but we still just said, 'Let's keep going, that's what he would want us to do.' We'd even had conversations before, when Joey and I would talk, and he'd ask me, 'Who would you get to replace me?' Things like that, and just be honest with each other. He knew the band would keep going, and he wanted it to.

To me, it's just part of life; it's just the way things happen, what cards you're dealt, how life treats you.

We don't know how to give up. That's been the story of our entire career, our lives, even without the band. We just don't know when to quit. It's just a matter of moving forward.

Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight Soundtrack

Opaque Green Vinyl - Limited To 750 Copiesl

Wanna hear the soundtrack to Armageddon? This 1995 film starred William Sadler as the Demon Knight, who, along with his new recruit, Jada Pinkett Smith, is charged with fending off The Collector (Billy Zane) and his army of demons from acquiring an ancient relic that is the only thing preventing the complete destruction of the human race. While the flick did meh box office and was panned critically, the soundtrack was easily one of the best of its era and of its kind, an all-star line-up of thrash and heavy metal acts mostly doing otherwise unavailable material (only the track by Pantera appears to have been released prior to the movie). The Pantera, Megadeth, Melvins, and Biohazard entries are particulary good, and the one hip hop tune on the collection, Gravediggaz' "1-800-Murder," is an archetypal "horrorcore" rap song. But perhaps the best tune is "Hey Man Nice Shot" by Filter, an outfit that hadn't released anything prior to this soundtrack. Since this movie came out in 1995, it only came out on LP in Europe; our Real Gone reissue brings it back on opaque green vinyl limited to 750 copies!

Fozzy is the brainchild of Rich Ward and Chris Jericho, two larger-than-life, trailblazing personalities that have spent the past decade shaping their own brand of sonic splendor, Ward's incendiary guitars forging a path for Jericho's inimitable vocals atop a rhythmic foundation of earth-rattling proportions. Not that anybody should be surprised. Ward is one of metal s pioneers the mastermind of Stuck Mojo, he soldered metal with rhythmic vocals long before it became fashionable, touring the world with some of metal s biggest bands and being hailed as one of Pantera legend Dimebag Darrell and Black Label Society/Ozzy Osbourne axe man Zakk Wylde's favorite guitarists. And front men don't come more dynamic than Chris Jericho, one of professional wrestling's biggest superstars, the embodiment of charisma, and the byproduct of a lifetime immersed in metal.

Sins and Bones is Fozzy in their full metal glory, 10 tracks of the most powerful music North America has to offer, capturing the bands powerhouse fusion of genres power metal roots bleeding with progressive style and a classic feel. Jericho and Ward have combined to sell more than 1.2 million records in their heralded careers, but those numbers are a fraction of the audience Fozzy were introduced to when their front man made the Top 7 as a contestant on season 10 of Dancing with the Stars, one of the biggest television shows in the world. Chris Jericho has conquered prime time now its time for Fozzy to conquer the world of heavy metal.

Down II: A Bustle in Your Hedgerow

This was Down's first album in seven years since the release of NOLA, the longest gap between the band's Four studio albums to date. Since Down was a supergroup, the band went on hiatus in 1996 so that members could focus on their main bands (namely Eyehategod, Corrosion of Conformity, Crowbar and Pantera). Down reformed in 1999 with Pantera bassist Rex Brown replacing Todd Strange. The band wanted the album to have a bluesy feel, so they moved into Phil Anselmo's barn, dubbed Nödferatu's Lair, in southern Louisiana where they lived and recorded the album in 28 days without anyone leaving the house.

    Walk Through Exits Only

Walk Through Exits Only is the career-first solo album from Philip Anselmo, legendary frontman of Pantera and Down.

Produced by Philip Anselmo and Michael Thompson, and recorded over the past couple of years at his New Orleans studio, Nodferatu's Lair, with his band The Illegals - Marzi Montazeri/guitar, and drummer Jose Manuel Blue Gonzales, Walk Through Exits Only is abrasive, aggressive, anthemic and 100% Anselmo. The album's eight songs are as unstrained as it gets, from Battalion of Zero to Usurper's Bastard Rant, to the album's title track that goes against the grain and right through the exits. Brash, brutal guitars cut through punishing percussion as Anselmo screams with uncompromising ferocity and uncontainable fire.

It wasn't about doing a paint-by-numbers thrash or heavy metal record, Anselmo explained about the project. It's an angry album that only I could do. I don't see anybody else out there screaming about the same shit I'm screaming about. On this album, there isn't any wordplay, there isn't any hidden message, it's all right there in front of you.

On Walk Through Exits Only and over his entire career, Anselmo hasn't just paved his own path, he's bulldozed it with his bare hands.

    Scour

One of the most highly anticipated supergroups of recent times, Scour are the merger of Pantera's Philip H. Anselmo, Pig Destroyer's John Jarvis, and Cattle Decapitation's Derek Engemann. An interesting combination....and surprisingly the music sounds nothing like any of the aforementioned bands. Scour speaks for itself.

A metallic rush of guitars and thundering drums, Deftones' music both epitomizes the hard-and-fast glory of post-grunge alt-metal and blows it wide open with innovation. As the Northern California-bred quintet evolved through a string of acclaimed albums and incessant, high-velocity touring, they also incorporated modern rock influences including The Cure and The Smiths into their Soundgarden/Tool/Rage Against the Machine/Pantera-inspired sonics. Now Maverick's new compilation sheds light on lesser-known output with covers, unreleased mixes, video B-Roll, and other choice rarities.

    Insecurity Notoriety (Awaiting Repress)

Insecurity Notoriety is the debut full-length release from hardcore punk act Arson Anthem. Released via Housecore Records, the band includes Philip Anselmo (Pantera, Down, Superjoint Ritual), Hank Williams III (Superjoint Ritual, Assjack) and Mike IX Williams (Outlaw Order, Eyehategod) and Colin Yeo (Ponykiller).

I'm nos sure what it iss...but when Hank III, Colin and I get into 'Arson' mode, time stops. We know the mission is to write unforgiving hardcorse inspired by a slew of '80s bands...but the result is its own animals, yet not too terribly removed from the genuine article describes Anselmo. With that said, Insecurity Notoriety is like listening to an old favoritve blast from the skanking past...viscious, snotty, grating and anthemic! I Know it's typical to call a modern-day hardcore band fresh or different, especially when it's your band, but...it is! This effort makes our first EP sound like child's play, as it should. Play it over and over! Piss everyone off!

    Who is Rex Brown?

To the industry, fellow musicians, and a legion of fans around the world, he's the bassist for Pantera, one of the biggest hard rock and metal acts of the past few decades, alongside Nirvana and Metallica. They had Number One albums with minimal support from traditional commercial outlets and went platinum several times over. Pantera rode a groundswell of underground loyalty, earned through several years of blood, sweat, and road beers. Five major label albums, countless international tours, and a series of carnage-filled home videos cemented a legacy as large as their massive riffs and the band's insatiable appetites for mayhem, authenticity, and brotherhood.

Brown wields a six-string guitar as confidently as he wore the bass in Pantera and Down. His engaging voice crackles with easygoing spirit and truth-telling power. It's a crunchy drawl that's down-to-earth, grippingly relatable, charmingly welcoming, and gritty, somewhere between the achingly resonant spiritual shamanism of Tom Waits and the instantly recognizable every man AM radio vibes of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

    Sever The Wicked Hand

    Limited Edition

This US quartet, formed in 1989, emerged in the early 90s as one of the leading lights of the New Orleans extreme metal scene, purveying a sound that blended Black Sabbath/Saint Vitus-styled heaviness with hardcore aggression. Kirk Windstein (b. 14 April 1965, Wiltshire, England; vocals/guitar), Todd Strange (b. 1966, USA; bass) Kevin Noonan (guitar) and Craig Nunenmacher (drums) made their debut in 1991 with the dark and doom-laden Obedience Thru Suffering, after which Noonan was replaced by Matt Thomas, a former bandmate of Pantera frontman Phil Anselmo in Razor White. Anselmo, an old friend who collaborates with Windstein on side-projects such as Down and Both Legs Broken, helped to refine and improve the band`s sound with his sympathetic production on Crowbar, which included a brutally heavy interpretation of Led Zeppelin`s `No Quarter`, adapted stylishly to the Crowbar sound.
The band was well received on tour with Paradise Lost in the UK and Pantera in the USA, and released the Live +1 EP (which was packaged with Crowbar in the UK) before returning to the studio with the stated intention of making Crowbar sound `like Jethro Tull`. In 1995, Eyehategod guitarist Jimmy Bower (b. 1966, USA), who had played with the original line-up in 1989, was recruited as the band`s new drummer, although Time Heals Nothing was recorded with Nunenmacher. True to form and promise, it provided a thunderous blast of controlled aggression and dark melodicism. Guitarist Sammy Pierre Duet (ex-Acid Bath) joined in time to help record 1996`s Broken Glass.

Bower left following the release of the 1998 follow-up Odd Fellows Rest. He was replaced by Sid Montz on 2000`s Equilibrium, following which Strange retired from the music scene and Nunemacher departed the ranks for a second time. Subsequent albums have seen sole remaining founding member Windstein joined by an ever-changing cast list of personnel.

    Uncle Anesthesia

After releasing three albums with Greg Ginn's underground label SST, Screaming Trees broke through in 1991 with Uncle Anesthesia on major label Epic. The band, fronted by Mark Lanegan (who would go on to collaborate solo with band members of Nirvana, Queens Of The Stone Age, Guns 'N Roses and Foo Fighters) is known for its raw psychedelic, whiskey voiced garage rock. This harder edge set the band apart from Seattle grunge contemporaries Alice In Chains and Soundgarden, gaining a loyal fanbase in the process. Uncle Anesthesia is produced by Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, Audioslave) and metal producer Terry Date, known for his recordings of Pantera, Prong, Overkill and White Zombie.
