    The Soul Album

Nobody burrowed more deeply into a song than Otis Redding -the most emotive, soulful singer the '60s ever produced. With the Stax/Volt horn section wailing in his wake, Redding's grainy voice and impassioned, sweat-soaked delivery kept him straddling both pop and soul charts until his untimely death in 1967. Here is an 180-gram vinyl exact reproduction of 1966's The Soul Album in knockout mono. Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fabulous!

The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads, simply referred to as Soul Ballads or Sings Soul Ballads, is the second studio album by American soul singer-songwriter Otis Redding, originally released in 1965. The album was one of the first issued by Volt Records, a sub-label of Stax Records, and Redding's first on the new label. Ranked 254/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time

50th Anniversary Double LP Package Includes Both Mono & Stereo Versions + Bonus 7-Inch Single

Otis Redding helped define soul music in 1966 with Complete And Unbelievable... The Otis Redding Dictionary Of Soul. The album, which peaked at #5 on the U.S. R&B charts, was once praised by critic Jon Landau as: The finest record ever to come out of Memphis and certainly the best example of modern soul ever recorded.

Redding recorded his fifth studio album, THE OTIS REDDING DICTIONARY OF SOUL, in the summer of 1966 at Stax Studios in Memphis. Together with Booker T. & the M.G.'s, pianist Isaac Hayes and the Memphis Horns, Redding recorded 12 songs for the album, including the all-time classics, Try A Little Tenderness and Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song).

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of this landmark recording, Rhino will release THE OTIS REDDING DICTIONARY OF SOUL as a double-LP set featuring both mono and stereo versions of the album, the latter of which has been out-of-print for decades. Both LPs will be pressed on 180-gram vinyl for superior audio quality. The set comes with a bonus 7 reissue of the single: Try A Little Tenderness b/w I'm Sick Y'all.

Remastered By Kevin Gray At Cohearent Audio From The Original Analog Tapes

200-Gram 45 RPM Double LP Plated And Pressed At Quality Record Pressings!

Tip-On Gatefold Jacket From Stoughton Printing

Otis Redding's third album presents his talent unfettered, his direction clear and his confidence emboldened, with fully half the songs representing a reach that extended his musical grasp. More than a quarter of this album is given over to Redding's version of songs by Sam Cooke, his idol, who had died the previous December.

Otis Redding Sings Soul is considered by many critics to be Redding's first great album. Recorded in April and July of 1965, it was released September 15th of that same year. The styles of Cooke and Redding couldn't have been more different; Cooke smooth and sure, Redding raw and pleading. But Redding's versions of Shake and A Change Is Gonna Come show how Cooke's sound and message helped shape Redding's Southern soul sound. Redding's singing reaches a new level of expressiveness with this as well as with covers of B.B. King's Rock Me Baby and the Motown hit My Girl.

This great album receives the full Analogue Productions reissue treatment here, starting with Kevin Gray's remaster from the original analogue tapes. Then we back that up with 200-gram plating and pressing on super-silent vinyl by our own Quality Record Pressings. Finally it's all housed in a tip-on gatefold jacket from Stoughton Printing. Deluxe all the way; you'll be estatic with the results!

    Precious Soul

Long Out Of Print Debut Solo Album from One of Hi Records' Most Successful Staff Songwriters!

Best-known as a staff songwriter under Willie Mitchell at Hi Records and as the husband of Hi star Ann Peebles, Don Bryant was also a fine, underappreciated singer in his own right. Bryant was born in Memphis on April 4, 1942; his father, Edward, sang with a gospel group called the Four Stars of Harmony, and Bryant himself began singing in church at age five. In 1955, he and four brothers formed their own gospel group, the Five Bryant Brothers, which soon switched to doo wop under the name the Quails.

Not long after, Bryant joined several high school friends in another doo wop group, the Four Canes, who were named after their manager, local DJ D. Cane Cole. When the group split with Cole, Bryant changed their name to the Four Kings, and they caught the attention of trumpeter/bandleader Willie Mitchell, who began performing with them around the Memphis club scene. Through Mitchell, Bryant got his original composition "Is There Someone Else on Your Mind" recorded by the 5 Royales and made his first solo recording in 1964 with a cover of Chris Kenner's "I Like It Like That."

Over the next five years, Bryant recorded several duets with Marion Brittnam and numerous cover songs, the latter of which constituted his first full-length LP, 1969's Precious Soul (issued on Hi). However, his behind-the-scenes career soon became more lucrative, specifically when Mitchell assigned him to work with new Hi signee Ann Peebles. No longer the label's focal point, Bryant resisted at first, but quickly discovered a creative and personal chemistry with Peebles that blossomed into a relationship in 1972 and marriage two years later.

In the meantime, Bryant co-wrote a number of Peebles' signature songs, including "I Can't Stand the Rain" and "99 Pounds"; his success led to a staff songwriting position, where he penned material for other Hi stars like Al Green, Syl Johnson, O.V. Wright and Otis Clay.

    Sings Soul Ballads

Released in 1965, Otis Redding's second album Sings Soul Ballads features a ne choice of sweet and tender songs. Backed up by the STAX house band consisting of such soul greats as Booker T. Jones, Steve Cropper, Donald 'Duck' Dunn, and Al Jackson Jr., Redding delivers the goods with impressive style. His renditions of Sam Cooke's "Nothing Can Change This Love" and Chuck Willis' "It's Too Late" can be seen as improved versions of the originals. Biggest hit on the album proved to be "Mr. Pitiful", a nickname given to Redding by a local Memphis radio DJ.

    MEmphis Rock And Soul

Melissa Etheridge has announced the release of her new album MEmphis Rock and Soul, a tribute to Stax Records and the rich history of classic Southern soul, scheduled for release via Stax Records, a division of Concord Music Group. The album is a collection of deep soul covers associated with the original Stax label, including songs recorded by Otis Redding, Rufus Thomas, The Staple Singers, William Bell and more. The album also features new, original verses written by Melissa on two of the tracks.

While the original Stax studio is long gone, Etheridge took to another hallowed local spot, Willie Mitchell's Royal Studios (home to Al Green, Ann Peebles and others), to channel the classic Memphis sounds found on these soulful standards. MEmphis Rock and Soul was produced by Willie's son Boo Mitchell, and features a backing band comprised of Hodges Brothers and other top Memphis musicians who are legends in their own right. Etheridge even recorded with Al Green's famed RCA 77DX ribbon microphone (No. 9"). MEmphis Rock and Soul also spotlights the empowering role Stax played in the Civil Rights Movement, a fitting theme for Melissa, who has become a pivotal voice of the modern LGBT rights movement.

    Pain In My Heart

This album works on so many different levels, that it's essential listening for at least three categories of buyer -- fans of Otis Redding and Stax Records (natch), and more general soul listeners, and also anyone serious about their devotion to the work of the Rolling Stones and any other British invasion bands that covered American soul. Pain In My Heart was practically a road map to Mick Jagger and any number of other would-be white soul shouters in the UK, not just on the title track but also numbers like the hard rocking Hey Hey Baby. For someone only 22 years old at the time of these sessions, and just two years past his first 45 rpm record, Redding exudes astonishing power, energy and boldness, though it's all packaged with greater restraint than his subsequent records did. This was the only LP that Redding recorded during the lifetime of his idol, Sam Cooke, and his version of You Send Me is the least stylized of any of his renditions of Cooke's songs -- later on, after Cooke's death, he would throw more of himself into it. The very fact that he was covering Cooke's soul classic shows an essential difference between Redding's and Cooke's early LPs; as Redding was on a soul label, no one tried to make him into a pop singer as that'd done at RCA with Cooke -- thus, he was running on all cylinders right out of the starting gate, though he wouldn't get really interesting or show his full depth until two albums later. But even covering Rufus Thomas's The Dog, Richard Berry's Louie Louie, Little Richard's Lucille, or Ben E. King's Stand By Me, he's already doing 70% of what we came to expect from Otis Redding in the years ahead -- his writing, apart from Security, These Arms Of Mine and That's What My Heart Needs, was still somewhat less than memorable, but this is still a first-rate debut.

Dock Of The Bay (Awaiting Repress)

Ranked 161/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

When Otis Redding recorded (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay in late 1967, the singer knew that the song was a milestone in his creative evolution. But before Redding got the chance to explore his new direction, he was killed, along with most of his backup band the Bar-Kays, in a plane crash while on tour. Released just a few weeks after his death, the song shot to Number One on the Pop and R&B charts, eventually winning Redding a pair of posthumous Grammy awards. The album bearing the song's title was assembled by the singer's frequent collaborator Steve Cropper, who played guitar on nearly all of Otis' Stax sessions as well as co-writing Dock of the Bay and countless other songs with Redding. Drawing mainly from unreleased and little-heard tracks spanning Redding's three-year Stax career, the album demonstrates the depth and breadth of his talent, while hinting at what might have been. This exact reproduction of this original Stax label LP is mastered from the original stereo tapes and pressed on pristine High-Definition vinyl.

In Person At The Whiskey A Go Go

Recorded at the famous L.A. club Whisky A Go Go in 1966, this album captures the raw energy of a small Otis Redding gig. Playing with his own touring band (not Booker T & the MG's as per his Monterey gig and European performances), this is Otis in his tried & true form - with a kick-ass band that blew the chitlin circuit's roofs off.

Roaring versions of Respect, I Can't Turn You Loose, These Arms Of Mine and Papa's Got A Brand New Bag are the definitive Otis Redding live tracks anyone should own.

    Mourning In The Morning

For Mourning In The Morning, his 1969 album debut on Atlantic Records, southpaw blues guitar legend Otis Rush journeyed from his Chicago home to Fame Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabamaa burg best known for seminal soul platters. Backed by a horn-powered band that included a young Duane Allman on rhythm guitar, Otis slashing axe and anguished vocals glowed on the tortured Youre Killing My Love, remakes of his Cobra Records classics My Love Will Never Die and It Takes Time, and a stunning revival of B.B. Kings Gamblers Blues. Half the set consisted of new compositions from producers Mike Bloomfield and Nick Gravenites, and Rushs mile-wide string bending on a shimmering instrumental version of Aretha Franklins Baby I Love You is utterly breathtaking.

    Life, Love And Leaving

Features The Previously Unreleased Album Outtake, ''This Old Heart'' (Originally By James Brown), Which Had Gone Unheard For Over 15 Years.

Features Eddie Hawrsh (The Black Crowes) On Bass.

Originally released in 2001, the Detroit Cobras Life, Love and Leaving is the group's best-known effort, coming at a time when bands like the White Stripes and Dirtbombs were also releasing seminal albums that started picking up recognition outside of their collective hometown of Detroit. Hitting hard with songs by soul heavyweights like Solomon Burke (''Stupidity''), Mary Wells (''Bye Bye Baby''), Otis Redding (''Shout Bamalama''), the inimitable vocals of Rachel Nagy would no-doubt be a template from which folks like Amy Winehouse would work from years later. A landmark collection of covers.
