Carolina Chocolate Drops/Luminescent Orch. EPOn The Carolina Chocolate Drops' Nonesuch debut, Genuine Negro Jig, this youthful trio explored what Sing Out! magazine called the virtually hidden tradition of black string band music, reaching far back into the last century to trace its lineage from the Piedmont region of North Carolina to the British isles and Africa. Multi-instrumentalists and singers Dom Flemons, Rhiannon Giddens, and Justin Robinson transformed their findings into lively tracks that deftly blended the timeless with the modern. Near-forgotten musical history came resoundingly back to life.
On this new four-song EP, the Drops find an instant connection to the Romanian gypsy punk music of their recent tour-mates, the Brooklyn-based Luminescent Orchestrii, a five-piece group about whom the Scotsman says The balancing of frenzy and finesse is evidently a trademark displayed to its utmost in the insanely frenetic dance tunes. Human beatboxer Adam Matta also joined the two bands for this short collection: a brilliant and absolutely live-in-the-studio, no overdubs, mashup of sounds, cultures and repertoire.
These nine kindred souls seamlessly combine material already popularized by the Drops (their ingenious reworking of Blu Cantrell's brazen R&B anthem, Hit 'Em Up Style) with original material from the Orchestrii (Knockin'). They split their session time between Brooklyn and Winston-Salem, NC, but make everything sound like part of one thrillingly virtuosic jam. Instrumentation includes fiddles, banjo, harmonica and bass, plus lots of hand-clapping, free-style rapping and human beat-boxing. These tracks were recorded with such immediacy and clarity, and with such a palpable sense of fun and friendship, that listening is almost like being there, hootin' and hollerin' along with them on a makeshift dance floor. And, as with any great party, the disc feels like it's over much too soon.1. Short Dress Gal

Killing Time (On Sale)Killing Time is the debut album from the San Francisco, CA trio Terry Malts consisting of Corey Cunningham (guitar, backing vocals), Phil Benson (bass guitar, lead vocals) and Nathan Sweatt (drums, backing vocals). Displaying a slick, intelligent take on modern chainsaw pop, Killing Time certainly lives up to its name! Their heads-down live shows and immaculate power-pop songwriting have made this irreverent punk trio one of the most talked about up and comers. Mashing up the best bits from such stellar forebears as The Undertones, Buzzcocks and Descendents, Terry Malts haven't forgotten their roots or the fact that one of the key elements of punk has always been the pursuit of having a good time at all costs.

Here Anonymous (Discontinued) (On Sale)Eulogies' songs struggle with broken-down communication, the weight of bad habits, the fear of being alone. That universal struggle is presented here on Here Anonymous with a directness that's both stark and beautiful. With Chris Reynolds on drums, Tim Hutton on bass, plus Peter Walker on guitar and vocals, Eulogies renders vivid scenes with a minimalist palette. Written during a Fall 2007 U.S. tour with Film School, the songs on Here Anonymous are deceivingly simple. Riding warm, well-worn instrumental tones and Walker's patient, understated vocals, they build a consistent mood over the album's 12 songs.
Walker continually shifts tempos and instrumentation and brings along the occasional guest. 'Two Can Play' opens with a gorgeous, dreamy groove, and soon Walker and Nikki Monninger of Dangerbird bandmates Silversun Pickups are finishing each other's soft-sung verses. The haunting organ sound on 'Stranger Calliope' was achieved via a Casiotone keyboard layered over a live flautist. Songs build momentum from one to the next with meticulous track sequencing; drama is evoked not through volume or intensity but subtle counterpoints in composition. There's a gentle, knowing tension to the music that speaks to the bittersweet push and pull of everyday living and dying.
The result is melancholy music that's upbeat, a record of specific personal intent that speaks to us all. Eulogies offers catharsis; a musical tradition that's ageless and inviolate. Here Anonymous snatches a moment out of that continuum for us to share, here and now. Limited Edition Double 12 Vinyl signed and numbered by Peter Walker. Jason Simon (Discontinued) (On Sale)Jason Simon, best known for his work as the guitarist and singer for the seminal heavy psych band known as Dead Meadow, releases his first solo album on Tee Pee Records. This is a stripped down and intimate record filled with intricate guitar work and poignant well-thought lyrics. Some songs are filled with dark brooding drones; others leisurely carry the listener down meandering rivers as they slowly develop in their own unhurried way. There are shades of Bert Jansch, Leonard Cohen, Sandy Bull and Townes Van Zandt, but only shades as this is most certainly its own thing. It is a record to remind the listener that heavy does not come from loud distortion and huge drums, but rather from the depth within the song itself.1. Let's Begin

Boy (Discontinued) (On Sale)Its enough to make you stop and say, What is that? It being the gorgeous melodies and lean, spellbound guitar lines of Colin Caulfield, an English/French lit major whos about to change what it means to be a shapeshifting singer-songwriter in the YouTube age.
Just ask Bradford Cox. He knows. Why, just a year ago, the Deerhunter frontman stumbled upon Colin Caulfields organ-grinding rendition of Rainwater Cassette Exchange and said its fantastically superior to the original. It actually sent shivers up my spine, especially during the second verse.
Believe it or not, that chilling cover was just a warmup session. As killer as he is at capturing the very essence of everything from Animal Collective to Ariel Pink, Caulfieds true talent is in telling his own Young Man stories. The first chapter of which goes by the name Boy, a deceivingly-simple suite of songs about wanting to grow up without having the slightest idea of what being a man actually means.
Now thats a reason to hit rewind, from the tone-setting tenderness and psych-infused harmonies of Five to the restless rhythms (Caulfield was a drummer well before he became a singer/guitarist) and room-engulfing intimacy of Up So Fast. Both of which feature some of the most hopeful/haunting choruses youll hear all year.
And thats just the beginning, of course. Since Young Man was conceived as a concept project about the passing of time, love, and loss, Caulfield already has two loosely-linked LPs on tap, a faceless collection of fragile characters that could be any one of us, really.
A lot of its autobiographical, explains Caulfield, but its universal at the same time, because everyone goes through these things.
Listen closely. Itll all make sense soon enough. Trust us.1. Five

Ideas of Distance (Discontinued) (On Sale)Young Man is the brainchild of one Colin Caulfield, conceived as a concept project about the passing of time, love and loss. Caulfield explored this concept while studying abroad in France and this international experience helped formulate his first recordings. Released in late 2010 to great acclaim, his first EP, Boy, is a psych-infused collection of songs with a tone setting tenderness that featured some of the most hopeful/haunting choruses heard that year.
The EP set the stage for Caulfield to tackle his most ambitious project yet which is releasing 3 full lengths in the next 2 years. The first of these records, Ideas of Distance captures this. Laid out over 8 songs and recorded/produced by Caulfield himself, Ideas of Distance is an emotional roller coaster that takes the listener on quite a ride throughout its stark 40 minutes. The dark beauty can be seen in the constant building of first single Nothing while the ever changing moods are never more present than on the epic album closer Felt which leaves the listener with a sense of ending while moving onto the next record.
The next record in the cycle is already being recorded with an impressive young band that includes Dylan Andrews (drums), Emmett Conway (guitar/vocals) and Joe Bailey (bass) which has backed Caulfied through several festivals and appearances including those with Local Natives, Yuck, The Pains of Being Pure At Heart, Cults and The Antlers.1. Sub Rosa (Discontinued) (On Sale)Produced by Harris and drummer Bill Dobrow, the new album will feature 14 gorgeous tracks recorded and mixed between November 2011 and March 2012 during a series of extended trips down to Rio De Janeiro where Harris encamped at Monoaural, a recording space built into an old house in the city's Baixo-Gavea section.
Sub Rosa pulls in the talents of long-time friends and cohorts, Norah Jones, Melody Gardot, Conor Oberst, and noteworthy Brazilian artists such as 27-year old keyboardist/arranger Maycon Ananias (Maria Gadu, Milton Nascimento) and Dadi, co-producer and bassist for Marisa Monte, who also plays with Jorge Ben (and who has the esteemed honor of having a Caetano Veloso song written about him). Also in the mix are singer Maria Gadu, jazz guitar legend Bill Frisell, singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Vinicius Cantuaria (who let Jesse and Bill crash at his house the entire time), guitarist Guilherme Monteiro (Forro In The Dark, Bebel Gilberto) and guitarist Nick Zinner, as well as ensembles of strings and horns with players ranging from members of Bon Iver to Brooklyn Rider. The album is a masterpiece of modern record making, striking the perfect balance between the spontaneity of live sessions and high fidelity and the craft of great songs and arrangements.
Probably best known for his 2003 Song Of The Year Grammy win for Jones' "Don't Know Why," Harris has been arguably one of the most prolific singer/songwriter/musicians in the country for nearly two decades now. Sub Rosa marks the eleventh in a fairly rapid succession of albums, most recently 2005's Mineral, 2007's Feel, 2009's Watching The Sky, and 2010's double-release of Through The Night and an instrumental album, Cosmo.
Prior to the lone wolf efforts, Harris released a pocketful of records with his noteworthy group, the Ferdinandos and yet another album prior to those with Once Blue, a duo with Rebecca Martin, in 1995. Nearly countless sessions later with friends and music-makers, piles of successful co-writes, covers of his songs, and shared stages with the likes of Jones, American Music Club, Bright Eyes, Joshua Radin and Ani DiFranco, Sub Rosa is clearly Harris' brass ring.
"I Know It Won't Be Long," is the kick off with a foot stomp two/four and a horn section holding down the choruses with Maria Gadu's lilting harmonies flying throughout. "Rocking Chairs," co-written with Dadi, is a whisper of powerful words, a perfume breeze that goes right to your memory and won't let you go, featuring Jones' backing vocal. "I Won't Wait" gives us an almost tarantella rendering this time with Oberst on backing vox, Zinner on tremolo guitar and an incredible string arrangement by Ananias. That's Frisell on guitar and Cantuaria playing maracas on "It's Been Going Around" and Gardot providing backing vocals for "Tant Pis." The list goes on-another pocketful of perfect songs the heartbeat of which can be felt just as powerfully on Coney Island as it can on Copacabana Beach.1. I Know It Won't Be Long

Four years on since they dropped 2009's blistering Tarot Sport, Fuck Buttons' Benjamin John Power and Andrew Hung are back with their third LP Slow Focus. Brainfreeze is the 2nd single from this critically acclaimed new album.
When Hung and Power get together a unique chemistry emerges and nothing else is allowed to interfere. As Power puts it: "The one fundamental rule remains: we are in the same room when we write. The rest is all fair game." Fuck Buttons have never really
stopped writing together in the time between albums. "The actual writing for Slow Focus began fairly soon after we stopped touring," says Hung, with Power adding "If we've had any time off, it's been a few months, so though both albums might seem like
two isolated events to everyone else, it doesn't seem as much so to us. They're more like snapshots of an ever evolving mess."
Fuck Buttons latest opus is the first record they've produced themselves; it's an album that attempts insular resonance. Using repetition to create hypnotic and suggestive states, Slow Focus veers ever more wildly between these parameters; a whole mood-shift taking place to darker, more turbulent evocations - something suggested as much in the album's title.
Fuck Buttons were flung out into the perception of the global public last year when Danny Boyle opted to use their music in his breath-taking Olympics Opening Ceremony in London, after a recommendation from techno veterans Underworld whom were
working with Boyle at the time. Now they're ready to face the limelight in full again, with a full UK, European, and North American tour.
Fuck Buttons may have been away for a while, but Slow Focus looks set to put them right back where they were: as one of the most arresting electronic acts in the world today.1. Brainfreeze

At Best CuckoldEmbarking upon a sophomore effort can be a daunting task for any young upstart, and there's no denying Avi Buffalo's own bar was set quite high with 2010's celebrated eponymous debut. Fear not, there's nothing in this tale about The Second Album-a.k.a. At Best Cuckold, due September 8th in Europe and September 9th in North America on Sub
Pop-that even remotely resembles a slump; in fact, it would be entirely appropriate to say that this Long Beach, California, enterprise is getting better with age.
Ah, yes, age-much was made of it when Avi Buffalo's first album hit, and for good reason: While their Millikan High School classmates were preoccupied with quaint and youthful pursuits, the musicians behind Avi Buffalo were busy making an off-kilter pop gem that eventually bowled over NME, The AV Club, Pitchfork, the BBC, and numerous other outlets on both sides of the Atlantic.
The creation of At Best Cuckold turned out to be a three-year journey; a stretch of time that resembles its predecessor. While transitioning from teenager to twentysomething and traversing the interpersonal wilds which accompany that age, Avi kept playing music, collaborated with and produced several friends (including Kevin Litrow's N.O.W. project and
Douglas James Sweeney's Arjuna Genome), and even started DJing. He also wrote new songs, and by the time 2013 rolled around, it was time to begin capturing his latest sparks-with that, the band headed into the studio on New Year's Day.
At Best Cuckold was recorded at Tiny Telephone, the analog-friendly San Francisco studio run by John Vanderslice (whose Bowie tribute Avi contributed to), and engineered by Jay Pellicci (The Dodos, Deerhoof, Sleater-Kinney). Avi then built on the "clean and tight" recordings from Tiny Telephone with analog and digital overdubs, and completed the
record with Nicolas Vernhes at Rare Book Room studio in Brooklyn. The result is a quirky yet comforting set of songs driven by refined pop songcraft and sneaky moments of grandeur that stick in the brain. Classic-sounding melodies are delivered with a modern sensibility, creating an album that's equal parts timely and timeless. Well-placed piano, sax, clarinet, French horn, and cornet further enhance the proceedings with a glorious orch-pop sheen.
At the ripe old age of 23, Avi Buffalo is ready to take on the world (again), armed with all of the experience he's compiled over the past few years. And he's made sure the second time around will be just as memorable as the first.1. So What
