    Eccentric Soul: The Forte Label

In 1969, after three years as Soul Sister #1 to James Brown's touring entourage, Marva Whitney came home to Kansas City, putting Ellis Taylor's Forte label back at full fighting strength. She'd calmed aching crowds the day after MLK's death, and she'd lived the life, despite its rigors-to pour out her pain and exuberance on Forte sides including "I've Lived The Life" and "Daddy Don't Know About Sugar Bear," which made national rounds in 1972.

By then, Forte had already done more than deliver Marvelous Marva to market. Taylor worked overtime at KPRS to bring the world The Rayons, who'd stroll their girl group harmonies past Chicago's RCA studios on "Baby Be Good." In '68, The Four Darlings sauntered in with smoky-voiced soul operatics on the demanding "Give Me Love." Progressing in the middle '70s, Everyday People got "Super Black" on Forte's pine-green label. Still powering forward some 13 years on, Forte redawned with the 1980s, essaying disco funk with Sharon Revoal's "Reaching for Our Star."

Numero 047 Eccentric Soul: The Forte Label charts Kansas City yeoman's work, the Carpets and the Derbys, dapper clothiers mysteriously murdered, and marriages made and broken. In 28 LP tracks, plus a trove of promo headshots and every-hued label scans
detailing all iterations of Forte's logo in print, this 16th Eccentric Soul sojourn hands over vivid floor shakers and lost dance craze records alike-though what moves "The Hen" required remains anyone's guess.

    The Lewis Connection

With insurance money from a recently overturned Buick Century, brothers Andre and Pierre Lewis went on a recording tear through the Twin Cities in 1978, cutting a halfdozen songs in as many studios. Combining the astro-sexuality of Parliament with the
sophisticated flammability of Earth, Wind & Fire, the Lewis Connection's misspelled debut captures the Minneapolis Sound's founding fathers-Prince among them-at the paradigm-shifting confluence of funk, jazz, and pop for which the Land of 10,000 Lakes
    is famed.

Having departed from Champagne, Prince Rogers Nelson felt certain he could gain work within the ranks of Pierre and Andre Lewis's profitable circle. Hoping simply to generate enough funds to secure passage for himself and a demo tape to New York City, the promising guitarist gigged with the group, and can be heard picking on "Got To Be Something Here" alongside future band mate and bassist, Sonny Thompson.

The session sat fallow until the Lewis brother's robust settlement secured passage back through the region's recording studios, as the Twin City players went for broke on each increasingly frugal session.
Notorious child prodigies and party animals, the Lewis Connection's self-titled debut was smoked and snorted by frenzied audiences, with few copies rising to the surface in the intervening decades. Over thirty years later, the seedy masterpieces of Pierre and Andre Lewis remain a freaky hallmark in the canon of Midwestern funk.

Boddie Recording Company: Cleveland, OH (Box Set)

From 1958 to 1993, Thomas and Louise Boddies industrious Boddie Recording Company issued nearly 300 albums and 45s, recorded 10,000 hours of tape, and remained in operation longer than any other studio, pressing plant, or label group in the history of Cleveland. Long forgotten even by the standards of the chronically overlooked northeastern Ohio music scene, Boddie was a fusion of its owners engineering genius and his limited economic means; its DIY recording studio housed in a humble barn, churned night and day to capture the sounds emanating from Clevelands east side neighborhoods.

The 65 tracks on this 5LP box set represent the best of the Boddies in-house Soul Kitchen, Luau, and Bounty labels, which released an unspoiled treasure trove of kitchen-sink eccentric soul, fuzzbox funk, shoestring doo-wop, and haunted, eerily hook-laden spirituals. Enclosed inside is a mountain of office-styled ephemera: two massive booklets brimming with detail on the Boddies and their artists; extensive notes and scores of unpublished photos; a complete detailed discography folio; reproduced fliers; and a Boddie greeting card, all rendered with the handcrafted charm that was the Boddie hallmark. Call it a self-contained record industry crammed into one box.

    Eccentric Soul: Capital City Soul

Fifty records later, The Numero Group returns to its
eccentric roots, Ohio's Capitol City and the sonorous
Shangri-La carved out by the indefatigable Bill Moss.
Filling in, around, and on top of our original The
Capsoul Label collection, Capitol City Soul is a trove
of completely unissued and underissued treasures from
Moss and company. A decade in the making, this is the
set of soul discoveries that no one but The Numero
Group could achieve. Features otherwise unreleased
songs from the Kool Blues, the Four Mints, Jupiter's
Release, and Love Maximum, alongside rare sides
by Dean Francis & the Soul Rockers, the Chandlers,
Associated Press, the Soul Partners, and the Vondors.
From the vaults under the basements under the garages
of one of the nation's most unsung music scenes.

This double LP set is ensconced in a thick tip-on
gatefold jacket splashed with a colorful spread of vivid
archival imagery accumulated over a decade of research
into the Columbus, Ohio culture. The liner notes
serve as an in-depth history of Columbus soul music,
linking The Capsoul Label with The Prix Label and
Norman Whiteside's Wee project (recently sampled by
Kanye West). A strong addition to the already
epic Eccentric Soul series from The Numero Group.

    Local Customs: Downriver Revival

Between 1967 and 1981 DetroitÆs downriver neighbor Ecorse, Michigan had its very own Harry Smith. Set up in a basement on 18th Avenue, Felton Williams chronicled the musical lives of EcorseÆs citizens and issued them on the Solid Rock, Compose, and Revival labels. Compiled here are 24 of WilliamsÆ most fascinating recordings, covering gospel, group soul, garage-punk, northern, jazz, and funk.

Also included is a DVD with over 200 sound recordings pulled from his archives and compiled into a digital tape vault. This allows you to dig deep into the endless hours of jam sessions, demos, sermons, rehearsals and studio outtakes. The DVD also has an engaging 30 minute documentary on the making of Downriver Revival and gives you further insight into Felton and the artists he recorded at Double-U-Sound.

    Eccentric Soul: The Young Disciples

Though there are currently dozens of small labels dedicated to unearthing and reissuing forgotten soul recordings from the `60s and `70s, few of them can compete with Chicago's Numero label, whose ECCENTRIC SOUL releases serve not just as fine collections of rare soul, but as miniature history lessons that throw light on forgotten corners of the American experience. Where previous ECCENTRIC SOUL volumes have documented the vibrant independent soul scenes that flourished in Miami, Chicago, and Detroit, THE YOUNG DISCIPLES album collects the output of St Louis' Merry and Gateway labels. The Young Disciples band accompanies talented and heretofore unknown young singers like LaVel Moore and Dauphin Jackson on a series of sides ranging from hard driving southern funk to impassioned torch songs.

    Buttons: From Champaign to Chicago

At the launch of the Numero label near-on a decade ago, they already had an unquenchable thirst for power pop, glam, and regional bar rock. This affliction led to the double disc Yellow Pills: Prefill compilation, which was intended as the first entry in a series that, they regret to report, got stalled out in committee.

Seven years after its release, YP became the first Numero effort to be put to sleep. Emails began trickling in about the missing catalog number: Would YP ever be issued on vinyl? Would there ever be a second volume? Was The Toms track "Sun" actually recorded in the '80s? Hoping to satiate the masses, the Numero brain trust has conceived Buttons as their brand-spanking-new power pop umbrella, and is pleased to announce the first two titles in the series: Buttons: Starter Kit and Buttons: From Champaign To Chicago.

An homage to the prairie state Numero calls home, From Champaign To Chicago is a 19-track survey of Illinois' cheapest thrills. Reaching back to 1973 and Peoria outliers the Jets and ending in 1987 with Romeoville's Julian Leal and his Dick Clark approved "Get Away," From Champaign to Chicago connects, via map, pins, and string, the various scenes that pockmarked the face of the Land of Lincoln!

    The Montgomery Movement

Funk's answer to the Five Blind Boys of Alabama,
Florida's Montgomery Express stood at the crossroads
of politically conscious soul and mystically awakened
dance music. Comprised of two blind musicians in
their 20s and a teenage rhythm section, their lone LP
was cut in 1972 for Orlando's Dove label, then reissued
on Folkways two years later. Although the label usually
steered clear of soul music and anything remotely
commercial sounding, Montgomery Express tapped into
    Folkways' Guthrie-cum-Chamber Bros. nerve.

"My whole life, I heard music in the air, beautiful music.
I've been involved in supernatural things, spoken with
spirits. I have heard an orchestra up in the air. I know
    I've heard it." -Paul Montgomery

    2 LPs and 132-page book!

Between 1975-1977, Chicago's South Side night clubs were a little lighter. Photographer Michael Abramson hit Perv's House, Pepper's Hideout, The High Chaparral, The Patio Lounge, and The Showcase Lounge, not to capture the artists on stage, instead popping off a half dozen rolls every night on the crowd. Light: On The South Side gathers for the first time over 100 of these images, as Numero Group shines its own strobe on yet another dark corner of the past. The 132-page hard back book features photos, an ephemera section, and an essay by Nick Hornby.

Housed in a gorgeous slipcase with the 12x12 book is Pepper's Jukebox, a seventeen track compilation of the kind of funky Chicago blues heard from the stage and the Wurlitzer. The deluxe 2LP set is packaged in a sharp gatefold jacket with two inner sleeves crammed to the gills with label scans and stories. All in all, it's the classiest Numero record ever made, spotted easily from across the room with its near 2 spine.

Light: On the South Side is undoubtedly Numeros most extravagant and audaciously packaged seta dazzling collection that should receive an automatic Grammy nomination for Best Recording Package. Housed in a slipcase box, the compilations 2-LP gatefold vinyl and 132-page hardbound 12x12 book offer the ultimate immersion into Chicagos African-American South Side nightclubs and the sounds, sights, personalities, and smells that filled them on a nightly basis. The gorgeous collection is a prerequisite for any fan of blues, R&B, and soul (and by natural extension, rock and pop)and anyone curious to glimpse a bygone era of life-after-dark celebrations staged by urbanites that lived for evenings on the dance floor, in front of the Wurlitzer, and in leather booths surrounded by the opposite sex, booze, and cigarettes. -Bob Gendron, TONE Audio, Issue 25

    Deep Night

A raw cry from the dark night of one man's soul. Cloistered away from the popular culture of 1982,
rural Illinois priest Tony Trosley painted a pastoral refraction of early 1970s Laurel Canyon watercolors with this stand-alone set of songs. Openhearted and naively psychedelic, Deep Night was recorded during a single pre-dawn marathon, and mixed live-to-tape in an isolated chapel.

Cobbled together out of local players to help fill out this ethereal soundscape, Trosley's band brought an earnest but bluntly unsophisticated backdrop to his phaser-drenched 12-string guitar. The Sixth Station-named for a grim New Testament tableau in which Veronica washes the tortured face of Jesus-managed to avoid overtly Christian themes in favor of a mystical Humanism that resonates timelessly, and to any sort of listener. This Deep Night is as profound and eerie as the images conjured by its title.

    The Glory Road

Her voice was all Saturday night, delivered on a Sunday
morning. Patsy on Jesus. Elvis without the pelvis. Fern
Jones' only album, released by Dot Records in 1959,
captured 36-year-old Sister Fern as she anointed
church music with the same untamed energy that
younger white Southerners were bringing to their rock
'n' roll. Produced by Mac Wiseman and showcasing crack
Nashville session players Hank "Sugarfoot" Garland,
Floyd Cramer, Joe Zinkan, and Buddy Harman fresh
off their June 1958 session with The Pelvis, Singing A
Happy Song should've taken Jones from dusty canvas
big tops to the Opry's storied stage. But with no 45 to
flog, Jones instead sold nary a record and never did hear
herself on the radio. Her fiery rockabilly gospel was a
few shades too radical for the conservative, traditional,
near puritanical public she played to anyway. Fern
Jones: The Glory Road collects her Singing A Happy
Song LP and cuts including "Didn't It Rain," from her
The Joneses Sing album, into one rousing package,
rich with the details and imagery of a brief career
spent tethered to the hard ground and gazing skyward.
The Glory Road'ssound gnaws at the bit and stands in
reverence, a runaway rockabilly tent show without a
single drop of rain on the horizon.

    Lucky Strikes & Liquid Gold

Ten road-weary tales from the wrong side of outlaw country. Jeff Cowell may have huffed thesame narcotic air as Townes Van Zandt and David Allan Coe, but hunkered far from the Nashville city limits, nary a Cash or Paycheck would drunkenly slur through his tunes. Recorded in 1975, Lucky Strikes and Liquid Gold is an
isolated, backwoods loner epic, top-loaded with odes to hitch-hiking and rambling the crumbling
Michigan countryside of Cowell's hard-drinking youth. Previously available only out of the backs
of borrowed cars, truck stops, campgrounds, and country-western bars between Algonac, Detroit,
East Lansing, Cadillac, and Manistee, this LP now finds new life in similarly detached environs: the
    last remaining record stores.

    It Came From N.Y.C.

    Remastered By Guitarist J. Yuenger

    Features Original Artwork

    Includes 108 Page Book

Years before Beavis and Butt-head headbanged "Thunder
Kiss '65" and "More Human than Human" into the
eternal rock video canon, there was primordial White
    Zombie-a quintessential, diabolically loud byproduct
of Manhattan's underground rock scene, born of artschool
    rendezvous and squalid apartment circumstance.
It Came from N.Y.C. is the most exhaustive attempt so
far to document the band's wondrously ugly birth. Get
reintroduced to White Zombie as New York noise-rock,
a grotesque creation that clawed and threatened its way to
    crossover metal glory.

    Numero resurrects White Zombie's
eternally out-of-print early EPs and LPs as It Came From
N.Y.C. Spread across five LPs , all
39 tracks have been remastered by guitarist J. Yuenger
and packaged alongside the original lurid artwork. The
    accompanying 108-page book painstakingly documents
    White Zombie's punishing progression through
scores of unpublished photos, period discography, a
T-shirtography, and tales from the terrifying early years
that stitch together the sordid story of a band whose true
power eclipsed its mainstream heyday. White Zombie lives.
    Don't be afraid.

    Universal Togetherness Band

Between 1979 and 1982, The Universal Togetherness
Band tracked unearthly portions of their sprawling
songbook for bewildered students in Columbia
College's audio engineering program. Storming the
gates of Chicago's premier recording studios, the
erudite party band explored permutations of soul,
jazz-fusion, new wave, and disco with little regard
for studio rates or the availability of magnetic tape.
Universal Togetherness Band captures the brightest,
    never-before-heard moments from this visionary
    group's 5-semester recording bender.

    Universal Togetherness Band: The
attractive gatefold LP edition boasts magnificent
    reproductions of never-before-seen images from
the archives of Chicago photographer Steven E.

    Buttons: Starter Kit

Numero's entry-level power pop 2LP compilation, Buttons: Starter Kit, features 20 songs from the original 004, plus two bonus cuts, new liners, tons of sleeve scans, photos, and ephemera, all housed in a spot varnished, brick-thick gatefold sleeve!

    Local Customs: Lone Star Lowlands

The second in Numeros series of peeks into the world of regional studios hones in on Mickey Rouses Lowland operation out of Beaumont, Texas. Long after the Boppers plane crashed and the Winter brothers (Johnny and Edgar) and Janis Joplin split, Texas Golden Triangle was home to a vibrant scene of musicians, songwriters, and entrepreneurs just trying to make it in Houston, let alone the world.

From the ashes of a vibrant garage and stage band scene, the Lowland studio and its clientele were formed. Holed up in a rundown strip mall, groups like Mourning Sun, Insight Out, Sage, Sassy, Mother Lion, Hope, Circus, and Boot Hill tracked out hundreds of demos, most of which were put on the shelf and left to bake in the South East Texas heat. Until now.

Over the last two years, Numero has painstakingly gone through every tape in the studios archives, selecting the best of the best (28 for this 2xLP) for this peerless compilation. The songs themselves run the gamut; southern boogie rock, CSNY clones, British blues thunder, garage-psych hangovers, Morricone-esque supper club instrumentals, yacht rock, and what can only be described as Bobby McPherin fronting the Velvet Underground, are threaded together in the way only a tightly-knit scene can be. Forget bringing these treasures back to life, Numeros giving them the life they never had.

The first-ever reissue of the private-press country-rock rarity by Colorado auto body painter, Marine,
and garage band lifer Kenny Knight-he played in the original `60s Black Flag-Crossroads recalls
a homebrew American Beauty-era Grateful Dead in its world-weary, low-key mood and indelible
songwriting. Faded, anxious, melancholy, and beautifully woozy, this out-of-time document belies its

Following a path blazed in Belize and the Bahamas, The Numero Group finds yet another stop on the soul diaspora tour: Dimona, Israel. Between 1975-1981, a group of American ex-pats took their native sounds of Detroit and Chicago and intermingled them with the messages of the Black Hebrew culture. The results are a heavenly mix of spiritual soul and jazz with an undercurrent of gospel psychedelia. Featuring the Soul Messengers, the Spirit Of Israel, Sons Of The Kingdom, and the Tonistics, Soul Messages From Dimona is the only living document of a thriving community at both the center and fringe of the world.

Good God! Born Again Funk (Awaiting Repress)

The Numero Groupes 2006 release Good God! A Gospel Funk Hymnal examined what seemed to be a conundrum: gospel singers performing pious gospel songs, and devoutly, but doing so amid hot, sweaty, earthy sounds drunk on the same moonshine downed by any blues singer thumbing his way up north from the Mississippi delta. If the central premise was to grapple with a ôfunkyö trend in gospel, forgive us for staring perhaps a bit too intently at the collision of sacred and profane we thought we saw on those LPs and 45s. This music was always sacred, and decidedly so.

Four years later, Numero returns with not quite a New Testament, rather a re-examination of a weighty tome. Born Again Funk lends new ears to a joyful strain of American
composers and performers unafraid of expressing their devotion with both inspiration and invention. They were faithful to a spirit, not to an ordained sound.
