Nuggets: Orginal Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era 1965-1968

Ranked 196/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

First released in 1972 on Elektra Records, the compilation is among the only 'various artists' titles to consistently wind up on published lists of 'all-time top albums'. Nuggets spawned more than 200 like-minded collections under such titles as Pebbles and Back From The Grave, and is a consistent compilation favourite and has carved out a genre of its own.

In order to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first ever Nuggets compilation this year, Rhino is releasing the 'Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era: 1965-1968'!

    Psychedelic Lollipop

The Blues Magoos launched their recording career with a major smash, hitting the Top Five with the brash garage-punk anthem (We Ain't Got) Nothin' Yet. That tune is just one of the multiple pleasures of Psychedelic Lollipop, notable as one of the first albums (along with the 13th Floor Elevators' debut) to use the word psychedelic in its title. The band balances swaggering proto-punk attitude, a Beatlesque pop sensibility and adventurous acid-pop experimentalism on such tunes as Gotta Get Away, One by One and Love Seems Doomed. And the Magoos' high-energy workouts on James Brown's I'll Go Crazy and John Loudermilk's Tobacco Road rank with the greatest versions of those much-covered garage-band standards.

This 60s garage-psych nugget is now available from Sundazed on High Definition Vinyl, sourced from the original Mercury-label stereo masters, with the colorful original cover art meticulously reproduced.

In their '60s heyday, the Blues Magoos were one of the first garage-punk bands to achieve mainstream success, and one of the first to embrace psychedelia. Early in their existence, the Bronx-bred quintet's high-energy live sets made them a popular attraction on the Greenwich Village club scene. Once they began making records, they quickly emerged as one of one of the earliest and most inventive exponents of the psychedelic sound. The band's 1966 debut album Psychedelic Lollipop and its 1967 followup Electric Comic Book, are two of that period's most beloved and enduring albums.

    Rip This

A perfect form of release - it heaps up mounds of
high tension, but in the most cathartic and enjoyable
    possible way. - NPR

A punk-fired garage tinkerer handy with all the tools
one needs to jury-rig some tasty rock nuggets - SPIN
Original Rock n' Roll Swagger at its finest - Hypetrak

A pungent, effective collision of garage rock- bashing
    and Ramones sneer
    - NY Times

When Bass Drum of Death started touring the rock club circuit
outside Oxford, Mississippi, several years ago, there was a legitimate
concern that the band's appeal might be limited to fans of the
garage scene. With a seemingly never-ending series of tour dates,
BDoD nonetheless transformed rooms full of normally
too-cool-to-rock indie crowds into a mob of sweaty, stage-diving
maniacs. Meanwhile, Madison Avenue, eager to cash in on hip
cachet, took notice. Since the release of 2011's GB City, "Get Found"
has been featured in FOX promos for the NASCAR season. Rockstar
Games' megaseller Grand Theft Auto V helped to promote last
year's self-titled album. Gamers terrorized the freeways of Los
Santos, living out their cops-and-robbers fantasies, as "Crawling
After You" blasted through their car stereo speakers. Bass Drum of
Death are teetering on the brink of reaching a mainstream audience,
and Rip This is their attempt to record an unapologetic rock album
for people outside their normal fan base.

In the past, BDoD brainchild John Barrett wrote and recorded all the
material and toured with a revolving lineup of hired guns on drums
and guitar. This time around, drummer Len Clark joins Barrett as a
full-time member and collaborator. The duo began discussing plans
for a new record when touring with Unknown Mortal Orchestra in
2013. Barrett and Clark then convinced UMO bassist Jacob Portrait
to take on the role of producer when the band booked a session in
March at Prairie Sun Studios in Sonoma County, California. With a
few rough demos, Barrett, Clark, and Portrait hunkered down for two
weeks and cranked out the band's first proper studio album. Rip This
retains BDoD's trademark sorry-for-partyin' swagger while
scrapping the crackling hiss and lo-fi fuzz. The result is an record
that still relies on an obliterating attack of heavy guitars, danceable
hooks, and kinetic drumming, but will appeal as much to KISS fans
as the music freaks and geeks who worship Nuggets. Both a
challenge to music critics and a rock call-to-arms, the title says it all.
You're not going to hear many records this year that rip like this, so
shotgun a beer, tune in, and turn up.

    Hand Springs

Continuing in the mission of reissuing the nuggets of the White Stripes' back catalog, Third Man plays Dr. Frankenstein/matchmaker to two stand-alone songs from the high time of the year 2000. "Hand Springs" was originally released as a split-single with the Dirtbombs and included free in issue #19 of Multiball magazine. "Red Death at 6:14" was initially released on the Jack White-produced compilation "Sympathetic Sounds of Detroit" and was later made available as a one-sided single from the folks at MOJO magazine. Both songs are quintessential White Stripes jams and finally pairing them together here makes (arguably) one of the best Stripes singles ever.

Three years in the making, Paul's Tomb: A Triumph marks Frog Eyes' thunderous, frantic, fiery return. This is a slow-brewed masterpiece that is unmistakably Frog Eyes, a new album that was very much worth the wait. On this point we feel unassailable: Frog Eyes keeps getting better and better. Apache Dropout is a full on lysergic boogie trio from Southern Indiana who've self-released a handful of recordings while touring the sub-U.S. during the past couple years. Finally, their debut LP is here to catch you up with their three-minute-&-less anthems crafted of '60s epoch fuzz. With mostly guitar/bass/drums they channel soul melodies, primitive rock thump and blasted solos that are soaked in the dimethyl-trip of teenage visions. Recorded by the band at their own Magnetic South Studio, they've pushed these 11 songs into highly textured nuggets of punk art.

A new force in song craft, Cate Le Bon resides in Cardiffm Wales's French quarter and befitting a songwriter who only writes in the dark, her music is a heady and personal Gallic stew of equal parts Nico, Malkmus and the chronicler's own observations on the impossibility of existence. Drawing on her experiences of the last year, Cate created collection of pop nuggets imbued with the playfulness of Faust and Syd Barrett and the tropical melodies of Os Mutantes. Existential word play and fuzz fused guitar lines tear through like an angry bee in a CAN on 'CYRK'. Currently on tour w/ St. Vincent.

    The Beast In Its Tracks

The Beast In Its Tracks is Josh Ritter's first studio album in almost three years. The Beast In Its Tracks may well be remembered as Ritter's divorce record, as it was written and recorded in the wake of his 18-month marriage suddenly dissolving.

As Ritter says, "In the year after my marriage ended, I realized that I had more new songs than
I'd ever had at one time. Far from the grand, sweeping feel of the songs on So Runs the World
Away, these new songs felt like rocks in the shoe, hard little nuggets of whatever they were, be
it spite, remorse, or happiness. I hadn't composed this stuff, I'd scrawled it down, just trying to
keep ahead of the heartbreak. They needed to be recorded like that. We needed to work fast,
make decisions quickly, keep the songs as spare as they could be kept, and above all never allow
ourselves to blunt the sharp edges."

You+Me (sometimes written You Plus Me) are a folk music duo consisting of Canadian musician-singer-songwriter Dallas Green and American singer-songwriter Alecia Moore, better known as Pink. Moore and Green met through mutual friends several years prior to their collaboration. The first time they sang together Green had asked Moore to sing with him at one of his shows. They remained friends and Green opened several shows for Moore in the U.K. Moore had considered singing acoustic ballads, and as friends the two had considered collaborating for several years. In March 2014, their schedules allowed them to get together and compose original songs. They had written musical nuggets in advance, and their debut album Rose Ave. took shape within a week.

    Living In America

Available On Vinyl For The First Time!

Living In America is the debut album by Swedish New Wave band The Sounds, released in 2002.

The Sounds embrace epic bands like Blondie, The Cars, Missing Persons and those obscure Garage Rock groups that make up the legendary Nuggets series. Their appearance even a band like Blondie, and they both look and play the part, with black T-shirts, faded jeans, and snappy three-minute songs with trebly keyboard vamps and tightly wound guitar riffs.

The album plays like a collection of A-sides, and indeed it spawned five singles; the second single, Living in America, reached #3 on the Swedish single charts and is featured in the 2010 video game, Rock Band 3. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) awarded the album a Platinum certification in 2003.

Rening the psych-pop nuggets of their debut LP, In
Limbo, TEEN's new Carolina EP is a stepping stone in the
way that all good extended plays are. The band - lead
    singer and multi-instrumentalist Teeny Lieberson,
    keyboardist Lizzie Lieberson, drummer Katherine
Lieberson (the three are sisters), and bassist Jane
Herships---recorded the ve-song record with producer
Daniel Schlett, who recently worked on DIIV's Oshin, at
    Strange Weather studio in Brooklyn.

While In Limbo's songs have many layers and effects,
TEEN intended Carolina to be a more natural affair, with
the band only playing what they could physically perform
in a live setting. Teeny sings in a higher register here,
inspired by Kate Bush and Al Green. "Our music in the
past was so about interweaving melodies, creating
movement by syncopation, and simple chord structures,"
Teeny says. "It felt like the next step forward would be to
take a more simplistic, live approach, play lines in unison
and create a different kind of conversation between the
    instruments.

One month after releasing their fourth studio album, Celestial Lineage, WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM recorded two live tracks at the BBC's Maida Vale studios. Southern Lord offers these sessions as a special vinyl release. It seems only fitting that Olympia's earthen black metal expanders, WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM, would add their name to the roster of acts who have recorded at the Maida Vale studios, the place where the sounds of contemporary and outstanding artists throughout the last century of popular music have been documented for the ages.

WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM's shadow, cast long and eerie from their campfire of the arcane, eclipses the hordes of black metal clones and drones, hewing raw nuggets of inspired music from rich seams of extreme metal and astral vibrations. "Prayer of Transformation" and "Thuja Magus Imperium" are the two tracks recorded on that day, taken from their lauded album Celestial Vintage and spanning two sides of vinyl and twenty minutes. Entitled BBC Session 2011 Anno Domini, this session is testament to the band's ability to inspire awe with homespun strands of metaphysical ambiance and painstakingly flexed sinews of metal, and is a must for all fans of the band as well as followers of contemporary metal.

    Give It Away

After nearly a decade of plugging away in the Chicago soul scene, the Chi-Lites finally reached the charts in 1969 with the effervescent Top Ten R&B hit Give It Away. Hot on its heels followed this debut LP, a strong one thanks to the composing/performing/producing dynamo Eugene Record as well as the steady hand of producer Carl Davis. 24 Hours of Sadness is a copycat of their first hit, but just as enjoyable a performance and just as sparkling a production, while Let Me Be the Man My Daddy Was is a sweet ballad that avoids the expected melodramatic pitfalls. The group's runthrough of several Motown nuggets (My Whole World Ended, I Heard It Through the Grapevine, I'm Gonna Make You Love Me) is also surprisingly successful, with Record's crystal falsetto on the former making for a nice translation of David Ruffin's original. The quartet got a little groovy for That's My Baby for You,.... the Chi-Lites' first full-length was a bright spot for Chicago soul.

    Smith Westerns

Rummaging through 1970s glam, Phil Spector teen-pop, and Nuggets garage-punk with the youthful abandon of kids finding new toys in the attic, the Smith Westerns' self-titled debut exudes an earnestness almost as pure as its recording levels are deafening. Their simple, sweet choruses about boys and girls in love could spike the punch at a 1970s TV show school dance.

When singing guitarist Cullen Omori, his bassist brother Cameron, second guitarist Max Kakacek, and a drummer known as Hal have the tunes to make themselves heard over their vintage aesthetic, The Smith Westerns' teenage kicks are hard to beat. Take string-swept glam ballad Be My Girl. which softly punctuates one of the year's most wrenchingly innocent hooks with somewhat risque pick-up lines. There's less lyrical subtext, but no less raunchy production, on the glam-rock boogie of Girl in Love, a come-on cursorily addressing the fleetingness of youth. It's only fitting that the Smith Westerns both look and sound like the Black Lips' good-bad not-evil twins.

These guys are sort of literally true to their school, garage-rocker Miss Alex White is a fellow Northside College Prep magnet-school alum, and their time on the road with the likes of Jay Reatard and Nobunny is evident on fine 60s-style frat-rocker Gimme Some Time. With fuzzed-out xylophone, frenetic opener Dreams suggests the group's most recent tour with Girls and Los Campesinos! might serve them better for a follow-up. Diamond Boys almost earns its piano on the strength of its adolescent grandiosity, but We Stay Out lets lo-fi become the end rather than the means, with a guitar line that sounds like a bee buzzing underwater.

Dad Loves His Work (On Sale)

Recorded amidst a failing marriage, ongoing heroin addiction, alcohol dependency, and a sense of fading commercial prowess, James Taylors Dad Loves His Work is an emotional juggernaut and musical marvel. Long considered a classic of the singer-songwriter domain, the 1981 effort stands as Taylors last real great album and an involving aural artwork that simmers with honesty, conviction, and feeling.

Half-speed mastered from the original master tapes, Mobile Fidelitys numbered limited-edition 180g LP marks the first time this classic has been properly remastered. Far exceeding the sonics of Sonys CD reissue, this audiophile version lifts up the cover on a world of sound, with Taylors mellow finger-picked guitar melodies, gently reassuring vocals, and bittersweet deliveries brought to the fore. Listeners will also be able to relax amidst the soft clouds of comforting background singing by ace guests Jennifer Warnes, J.D. Souther, and Peter Asher.

With the title reflecting the singers answer to his then-wife, Carly Simon, Dad Loves His Work remains a statement of certainty and priority that Taylor invests with devastating poignancy, physiological soulfulness, and universal pathos. Balancing the biting edginess and forlorn despair with equal parts self-deprecating humor and rapier wit, Taylors songwriting on such nuggets as Hard Times, Hour That the Morning Comes, and charged Stand and Fight is among the best of his career.

No surprise, then, that Taylor wasnt only looking at and reflecting upon his own life, but that of his relationship with his own father and ancestors. The emotional repercussions involved with such looming themes trickle through the harmony-laden music, spurred by the vocalists trademark acoustic guitar, shivering harmonicas, Rhodes pianos, myriad percussive devices, and tasteful synthesizer passages.

Taylors definitive duet with Souther on Her Town Too bridged both the pop and adult-contemporary charts, catapulting Dad Loves His Work in the Top Ten and past sales of one million copies. Similarly, Taylor expands his horizons on the politically motivated Sugar Trade, co-written by Jimmy Buffett.

Mobile Fidelitys collectible audiophile 180g LP brings you into Taylors private world with unparalleled intensity and extreme closeness. Taylor feels every word he sings on this record, and now, thanks to meticulous remastering efforts, his expressiveness and sensitivity coming through via unencumbered transparency and dynamic acoustics. This edition of Dad Loves His Work is not to be missed!

    Butter Knife

Limited First Edition LP Pressed On Translucent Gold Vinyl

LP Comes With 18x24 Insert / Poster

After nine years of existence, Fullerton's Audacity has left the garage of their
humble 9th grade beginning, but the garage hasn't left the spirit of their
music. With two LPs, a slew of EPs, and no shortage of touring under their
belts, Audacity are hardly a wet-behind-the-ears rock band. Their
razor-sharp musicianship and high-energy performances were solid enough
to earn them the privilege of serving as the backing band for both King Tuff
and Todd Congelliere (Toys That Kill, Underground Railroad to Candyland).
And while you could hear the band pushing at the boundaries on their prior
releases-a nod to Descendents melodic hardcore here, a dash of
Replacements' bar-band irtations there-Audacity seems less interested in
showing a broad swath of inuences as they are in delivering the craftiest
hooks and sweatiest live show possible.

Audacity's latest full-length Butter Knife is still, at its core, a garage rock
record. The economic instrumentation, grit-tinged guitar jangle,
pogo-prompting tempos, and sing-along choruses can all be traced back to
the seminal Nuggets collections. But ultimately, Butter Knife doesn't sound so
much like an homage to The Sonics as it sounds like a young band striving to
make the most ebullient and jubilant noise possible. Album opener "Couldn't
Hold A Candle" is a perfect introduction to Audacity's battle plan-a
balanced blend of pop sensibility and ribald power. "Hole In The Sky"
showcases the band's gift for the on-the-dime changes, sophisticated
melodies, and clever instrumental interplay. "Red Wine" demonstrates a
Robert Pollard-like knack for turning an unexpected chord combination into a
remarkably punchy chorus. And album closer "Autumn" harkens back to the
balladry of power pop kings Big Star. All of which is to say, Audacity are
tighter and more clever than your average suburban band, and consequently
they're one of the strongest acts in the Southern Californian garage rock
scene surrounding Fullerton's DIY label Burger Records (Black Lips, Nobunny,
    Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees).

    Electric Comic Book

The Blues Magoos launched their recording career with the LP Psychedelic Lollipop. The equally impressive Electric Comic Book refines the band's mix of rock 'n' roll and day-glo psychedelia. That punchy yet playful approach animates such distinctive numbers as Pipe Dream, Rush Hour, There's a Chance We Can Make It and Albert Common Is Dead.

This '60s garage-psych nugget is now available from Sundazed on High Definition Vinyl, sourced from the original Mercury-label stereo masters, with the colorful original cover art meticulously reproduced.

If Only You Were Lonely (Awaiting Repress)

With the breakout success of Hawthorne Heights' 2004 debut, The Silence in Black and White, the little screamo band that could from Dayton, OH, could have easily taken the formulaic approach with its sophomore album. Instead, this rising new rock outfit does everything it can to broaden its scope on If Only You Were Lonely. One need look no further than the hushed, piano-steered closing number, Decembers, which echoes both the Beach Boys and Death Cab for Cutie. That somber highlight aside, Hawthorne Heights haven't exactly ditched their calling card, as exhibited by the infectious, self-deprecating heartbreak anthem We Are So Last Year and Pens and Needles, a bold, capable punk-pop nugget with serious devotional issues. The outfit's three-axe attack coupled with the distinctive pipes of J.T. Woodruff find Hawthorne Heights able to go where peers like Fall Out Boy just can't. Be it the downright winsome lilt of Saying Sorry or the riotous punk of This Is Who We Are -- painted with blood-curdling screams -- the group manages to walk the fine line between art and its aspirations of world domination with its credibility in check.

    Fever Tree

Fever Tree's lone hit single, the haunting 1968 tribal anthem San Francisco Girls (Return of the Native), perfectly captured the spirit of the psychedelic era. Although their signature hit led many to assume that they were a Bay Area band, Fever Tree actually hailed from Houston, Texas. San Francisco Girls quickly emerged as a staple of American underground Fm radio, and won the band an international audience after becoming an airplay favorite of influential British DJ John Peel.

San Francisco Girls is also the centerpiece of Fever Tree's self-titled first LP, one of the period's most distinctive debut efforts. As the album demonstrates, the quintet was adept at incorporating jazz and classical influences, ambitious song structures and resourceful production touches. Such memorable numbers as The Sun Also Rises and Come with Me (Rainsong benefit from Dennis Keller's hypnotic vocals, Michael Knust's dynamic guitar work and Rob Landes' inventive keyboard textures. Also included is a memorable medley of the Beatles' Day Tripper and We Can Work It Out, and a unique interpretation of the Neil Young/Buffalo Springfield nugget Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing. Fever Tree's expansive musical settings also feature key contributions from a pair of noted arrangers: David Angel, renowned for his work of Love's Forever Changes and Gene Page, whose resume includes work with the likes of Phil Spector and Marvin Gaye.

Fever Tree would release three more well-received albums, before disbanding at the dawn of the 1970s. Recent years have seen a resurgence of interest in the band's vintage work, and this one-of-a-kind debut album remains a deeply compelling sonic artifact.

The vinyl edition of this vintage gem is mastered from the original analog tapes, features complete original cover art and is pressed on high quality, high-definition vinyl, the better to recapture the original magic of this timeless album.
