Hard AttackThe 70's were the golden era of rock music. Especially in 1972 albums such as Deep Purple's Machine Head, Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick, David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust, Uriah Heep's Demons and Wizards, Black Sabbath's Vol. 4, and of course the colossal live Made in Japan were released. In addition to their undeniable historical value, these albums were released by British artists that dominated the rock scene back then. On the other side of the Atlantic, 3 teens from the US were forming a short-lived band that released only two albums but had a strong impact on a small nucleus of fans that recognized something different in the sound of Dust. The sound of Hard Attack, the band's second and final release, that we now call proto-metal is influenced by the likes of Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Black Sabbath, the Who and even Cream. So, what we have here is an American band that sounds as if it consists of British musicians. The band members however were not strangers to the world of rock. Drummer Marc Bell became known as Marky Ramone, while singer and guitarist Richie Wise went on to produce the first two KISS albums along with Kenny Kerner who wrote the lyrics of Hard Attack. Nevertheless, bass player Kenny Aaronson is the one who shines mostly throughout the album with his amazing musicianship.
As a result, the fact that the album sounds like a fusion of the aforementioned bands is not accidental. In addition, the listener can recognize elements of KISS from the very beginning with excellent riffs, heavy rock attitude but most notably huge chugging bass lines. But it's not just speed and heaviness that this band has to offer. The combination of acoustic and electric guitar showcases the band's ability to create more melodic passages along with their proto-metal sound. The song Suicide is the pinnacle of the whole album as one can listen to the band's Sabbathian sound accompanied by drum fills reminiscent of Ginger Baker. Bear in mind that in this release Marc Bell (aka Marky Ramone) is just 16 years old. Additionally, one can listen to melodic brakes in the middle of some songs that remind Uriah Heep and psychedelic influences from the likes of the Beatles. Moreover, the band sounds even more interesting when they add strings and organ to a mellow song with lyrics such as "Angry angels cried, Satan yearning cast a spell on us, Cherubim with wings that cannot fly, Dancing demons fill the sky". An additional sample of proto-metal can be heard in the speedy instrumental Ivory with its catchy riffs, cool bass licks, and Paice-like drumming. As you may have guessed, Dust is not your typical 70's hard rock band. Yes, they do incorporate elements from several bands but they add their own style in order to produce a rather exciting outcome, that we now call proto-metal.

The first in a long series of about-faces and left turns, Visions of Excess forgoes the noise-funk of the Golden Palominos' debut in favor of more pop-oriented material and staggering lineup of underground luminaries. Built around a nucleus of Anton Fier, bassist Bill Laswell, guitarist Jody Harris, and keyboardist Bernie Worrell, the album recruits vocalists from Jack Bruce to John Lydon to, most impressively, Michael Stipe, who turns in striking performances on the opening Boy (Go) (featuring guitarist Richard Thompson), the Jefferson Airplane-like Clustering Train, and a cover of Moby Grape's Omaha. Formed by Ryan Rousseau, D. Unit was initially a synthheavy three piece whose other members were Jay Reatard and Alicja Trout (Lost Sounds); likewise Rousseau was also in the Reatards before Jay went solo. Born out of the nucleus of the Memphis Goner Records scene and transplanted into Tempe, AZ, Rousseau has grown the band in the last few years into a full sonic assault, which now includes three guitar players (himself, Nick Nappa & Jesco Aurelius), his brother Rusty Rousseau on bass, and a 19 year-old classically trained drummer, Andrew Flores. Right On TimeThere's a narrative at work in The Brought Low's best songs, chronicling existence in the inner-cities outer boroughs and the pratfalls of hard work, hard liquor and hard time. The essence of these stories mirror the band's own: the past couple years has been a repetition of arrivals and departures: family dying and being born, band members entering in and then walking out. There was a local new wave revival whose aesthetic they couldn't have less to do with, a cycle of touring, working, and touring again, a decrepit practice space that's become a decrepit second home. On the other side of the tunnel they've come out stronger, more resolute in their conviction, and wired for maximum impact.
Singer/ guitarist/ songwriter Benjamin Howard Smith and drummer Nick Heller have been the nucleus of The Brought Low since the rolling thunder of their NYC debut in 1999. The band's universally-lauded self-titled debut album on Tee Pee Records earned them a loyal audience, and the howling overdrive of their impassioned live shows have become the stuff of city folklore. 2003 saw the addition of bassist Robert Russell as well as second guitarist Kevin Eleven, who left the band shortly after recording concluded, returning them to their original power trio format. Wallpaper Music (Discontinued) (On Sale)Hailing from Tennessee, Cheap Time has been around in one incarnation or another since 2006. The nucleus has always been Jeffrey Novak, who writes and sings in addition to playing guitar and keyboards. The band began with members of the band Be Your Own Pet rounding out the lineup. Theirs was a sound of a teen punk band with more attitude than musicianship, owing more than a little to early Redd Kross. By the time Cheap Time recorded their debut album, the personnel had changed drastically and, in addition to improved musicianship, Novak brought in influences of '70s glam and power pop acts like Sparks and The Quick.
The band followed this with more lineup shuffles and a sophomore album, Fantastic Explanations (and Similar Situations), that was darker, moodier and more complex than its predecessor. Despite the many changes, however, Cheap Time has always been a sum of its parts. A quintessential ingredient is the low-fi bombast with which they scuzz up their otherwise lightweight brand of simplified 1970's glam punk, packing an impressive amount of adolescent snottiness into two-minute blasts of sound with both precision and melody.
Cheap Time are now back with their third and by far strongest record to date. Recorded in Novak's new home studio, Wallpaper Music distills perfectly all the phases through which the band has passed. Retaining both the punk moves and pop-damaged glam jams, the band delivers their most realized, cohesive record yet. Songs like "More Cigarettes" and "Another Time" are Aussie-esque punkers in a Saints-like vein, while "Underneath the Fruit Flies" shows that Novak has found a happy medium between his punk tendencies and his desire to experiment. Street Survivors remains Lynyrd Skynyrds finest hour, and for many reasons. The last album recorded with original vocalist Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Steve Gaines, who passed away in a tragic plane accident three days after its release, the 1977 set is both mythical for its historical significance as well as infallible songwriting quality. Then there's the triple-guitar front of Collins, Gary Rossington, and Steve Gaines, which, together, comprise the most formidable combination of lead six-string players assembled on an original album. Add in freshly inspired performances and classic Muscle Shoals production, and you have a timeless work of art.
Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI (the best record plant in North America), Mobile Fidelity Silver Series' limited edition LP presents Skynyrds landmark effort in a dynamic, organic, soulful, and balanced sound that puts the musicians on a wide soundstage that will make you think they are standing on a stage in your room. Rebounding from 1975s solid yet semi-formulaic Nuthin Fancy and the following years equally lukewarm Gimme Back My Bullets, Skynyrd comes out firing on Street Survivors and never let up. The septets nucleus was never better. It's lamentable that this stands as the lineups only studio record together, but the music here makes you all the more thankful for the chance to at least here them reach their potential at least once.
Gaines incredible abilities spur on his mates, which respond with strong ideas and even stronger performances. Melodies are sharp, hooks are abundant, rhythms in command. A miasma of blues, rock, country, gospel, and soul informs the arrangements, and those three guitarists play as if their lives depended on getting everything just right. Songs flow with an effortless ease, and whether its the slithering organ-backed rollick of I Never Dreamed, swampy drug-abuse warning That Smell, or autobiographical honky-tonk Ain't No Good Life, Skynryd clicks on all cylinders. Swagger, swing, and strut. What an album.
Honor Van Zant and Collins memories, and revisit a Southern rock masterpiece, by acquiring this collectable version of Street Survivors.

Where I've Been"I think this is the best work we've ever done," explains JD & The Straight Shot founder and frontman Jim Dolan of the band's latest release, Where I've Been. "I'm so proud of the music that my band and I have put together. I believe in this album."
Produced by Joe Walsh, Where I've Been features several breakthrough singles including "Governor's Song," which challenges some of today's most well-known political figures; "Under That Hood," a transformative single that tells the tragic story of Trayvon Martin; and "Hard to Find," which will be featured in the highly-anticipated film, St. Vincent, starring Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy.
Dolan's day gig is Cablevision Systems CEO and Executive Chairman of Madison Square Garden, where he also oversees New York sports teams such as the Knicks and the Rangers. Music is his passion.
"I needed something in my life where I felt like I was actually creating," says Dolan. "Most of what I do as an executive is orchestrate. I don't actually set up cable and I don't really shoot hoops," he says, laughing. "Music is something I've played since I was a kid. It's me purely expressing myself."
JD & The Straight Shot's creative nucleus is Dolan and guitarist Marc Copely (B.B. King), who pen all the band's music and lyrics. Instrumentally indispensable is guitarist Aidan Dolan; keyboardist Brian Mitchell (Bob Dylan, Levon Helm); and drummer Joe Magistro (The Black Crowes). Also part of the band are some of pop music's finest session players, bassist Zev Katz (Aretha Franklin, Elton John), and violinist Erin Slaver (Rod Stewart, Trace Adkins, Martina McBride).
Dolan started JD & The Straight Shot in 2000. The band has recorded four previous albums: Midnight Run (2012), Can't Make Tears (2011), Right On Time (2008), and Nothing To Hide (2005) - as well as an EP, Daily News Blues (2010).
The band's style is steeped in the quiet fire of Americana, with distinctive elements of the blues and mystical, rustic, New Orleans-flavored roots music - topped off with a dash of the classic rock of Dolan's youth.
"I grew up on bands like the Allman Brothers," says Dolan. "We played those records until the grooves wore right off of them."
JD & The Straight Shot has been covered by The New York Times, Billboard, and New York Magazine, among other publications, and performed on "Good Day New York." Their song "Can't Make Tears" is the theme song for AMC's TV show Hell on Wheels, and their music has been featured in many films, including the critically acclaimed August: Osage County.
The group has opened for the Eagles on several tours, including the current "History of the Eagles" tour, the "Summer 2010" tour, and the band's stadium tour with the Dixie Chicks and Keith Urban. Inspired by and loosely based around the Isaac Asimov stories of the same name, I Robot delves into themes of artificial intelligence and technological dominance that make the record increasingly relevant in the 21st century. Indeed, Parsons' pinnacle creation dovetailed with the ascendency of Star Wars, which itself is experiencing a rebirth in an age of self-driving cars, smart devices, and mindless automation. Lyrically, songs such as The Voice call into question human behavior - and their relationship to increasing robotic supremacy - in everyday life. Newport Uproar (Pure Pleasure)
The 1967 Newport Jazz Festival, fourteenth in a world-famous series, was inexplicably the first at which Lionel Hampton had ever appeared. Better late than never, the great vibist and bandleader came, played and conquered. As the crowd roars ecstatically at the end of this record, the awed but happy voice of producer George Wein is heard: »This hasn't happened since Duke « he begins, casting back in his mind to 1956 and the nearest comparable triumph.
There is nothing quite so effective as a big band at an outdoor jazz festival. So the 1967 Newport programme included those of Count Basie, Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Don Ellis and Lionel Hampton. Lionel knew the competition he had to face, and knew that in the festival's climatic spot - the last act on the last night - his performance would be compared with those of all the others. He prepared accordingly.
Members of his Inner Circle, the octet with which he normally works, would provide the nucleus for an orchestra largely composed of alumni from his earlier bands. When the call went out to the Old Guard, the response was magnificent, as a glance at the personnel will show. Top names in the profession came back to join him, to form one of the great all-star bands of all time. A two week engagement at The Metropole in New York, immediately before the festival, served as a prolonged dress rehearsal, where the ensembles were polished and new arrangements familiarized. Enthusiasm mounted night by night in the Seventh Avenue club, among musicians and public alike, until Newport and the evening of 3rd July were reached. Then, as you will hear, the spirit was willing and the flesh far, far from weak.
All these preparations ensured a good performance, but the spark, the magic necessary to make it a great one, had to come from the leader. Everybody knows that he is a kind of rhythmic dynamo-driving, full of energy, unsparing of himself. His commitment and conviction communicate rapidly with any audience, so that it is soon won over to his side. Yet in the long, ninety minute program, errors in pacing would have been easy, forgivable, but extremely damaging. A climax reached too soon would have led to anti-climax, and a flat feeling as the crowd left the ground. As it was, Lionel's long professional experience served him superbly, so that his program rose steadily and inexorably to the all-out, emotional frenzy of Flying Home. Like a good general, he never lost his grasp on the situation. He inspired his men by personal example on the vibes, reinforced the beat on a second set of drums, and finally brought up the reserves - Alan Dawson, Milt Buckner and Illinois Jacquet - at just the right time, and in the right spot, to secure an unforgettable triumph and a tumultuous ovation.

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.
