Classic turntable with superior tone-arm reaches magical performance levels!

1Xpression Carbon is the 6th generation of the hi-fi classic Pro-Ject 1, which was presented for the first time in 1991. No other entry-level turntable concept is more audiophile and the current version includes a totally new carbon tone-arm with spin-off „EVO"-technology. It has new innovative gimbal design features a resonance damping counterweight, that allows best performance for any cartridge. The approved belt drive design offers low noise AC motor with effective motor decoupling, ultra precision frequency DC-driven AC generator (like Speed Box) for ultimate speed stability. The complex main platter construction cannot be found elsewhere in this price range and is similar to the Xtension models. Advanced thermo plastic elastomers (TPE) are used in a sandwich construction with steel alloy for optimized resonance behavior. Platter bearing axle is made from low tolerance chrome plated stainless steel running on a Teflon bottom in bronze bearing housing. Turntable main plinth is made from low resonance MDF, which effectively is decoupled from structure-born noise by special absorber feet, that use TPE technology. Beside it`s class-leading sound quality, this turntable convinces with classic elegance and high-class black piano finish.

    The Rega RP10 skeletal turntable.

Rega is extremely pleased to announce the launch of the much awaited RP10.

Rega's design philosophy extends further than ever before with advanced components built around our radical new plinth design. Featuring the brand new RB2000 tonearm, a ceramic flywheel effect platter and the custom RP10 power supply (allowing total control and accuracy over both motor vibration and speed performance) guarantee the highest level of performance from a Rega turntable to date.

The RP10 will also be available with its perfect partner, the Apheta moving coil cartridge, factory fitted as a package option.

    The Evolution of Revolution

Evolution is a well proven and documented process in many areas of our lives. This applies in particular to design engineers and machines. Over the past forty years our cars have become more reliable and economical whilst we take for granted the reliability and speed of modern aircraft. Rega is no exception to evolution. Rega's experience and previous achievements allow us to continually develop and produce better products.

The RP10 represents probably the biggest step forward in the evolution of Roy Gandy's turntable design philosophies. Low mass, high rigidity plinths combined with electronically controlled low vibration motors, high flywheel effect platters and lower mass higher stability tonearms.

    RP10 Custom power supply

Housed in Rega's custom design case is a brand new advanced anti vibration and speed control circuit dedicated to running the 24v low noise motor. The speed and control of the motor is achieved by using a new DSP (digital signal processing) generator built upon a high stability crystal. The device will divide the accurate square wave from the crystal to the exact frequency required to turn the platter at the selected speed. The DSP core will also generate a near perfect sinusoidal waveform to power the motor. Factory set vibration and speed adjustments are then made to the power supply to tune the motor for optimal performance.

The entire tonearm structure is designed to have the minimum of mechanical joints whilst using the stiffest materials in all critical areas. The tolerance of the RB2000 tonearm is so tight that no adhesive is used at any point throughout the construction. A brand new low mass, precision engineered, vertical bearing assembly has been manufactured to further compliment the inherent design philosophy of the RP10 turntable.

The RB2000 uses the latest award winning Rega arm tube. Each one which is meticulously hand polished (keeping mass to an absolute minimum) and has been completely redesigned to redistribute mass and further reduce stresses and resonances. This advanced design tube increases the stiffness and rigidity of the overall assembly whilst reducing stress on the bearings even further.

Magnesium and Phenolic - Dual bracing

A super lightweight plinth combined with a double brace mounted specifically where the increased rigidity is required (between the tonearm mounting and the main hub bearing) forms a structurally sound "stressed beam" assembly. This design prevents energy absorption and unwanted resonances which will add un-natural distortions to the music. The RP10 takes our double brace technology to the next level. Not content with an unprecedented stiffness to mass ratio, Rega have obsessively reduced any resonant properties by using two different materials for the new stressed beam. The top layer is magnesium and the bottom layer is pheno-lic (two of the lightest and stiffest materials available). Incorporating two different materials into the brace structure lowers their ability to pick up unwanted airborne vibrations. Simply put, different materials have different natural resonances. By using two different materials together they decrease the natural frequency of each other by self damping.

    Super flywheel effect ceramic platter

The RP10 uses a custom ceramic flywheel effect platter. The platter is produced from ceramic oxide powder which is compressed, fired and diamond cut to ensure perfect accuracy and flatness across the surface. The new platter features a modified construction over the previous P9 version with improved coupling to the sub platter.

    24V Low noise motor

The motor is a high specification, 24V twin phase synchronous unit. It is controlled by Rega's unique and innovative RP10-PSU power supply. The motor drives the CNC machined pulley, sub platter and hub-bearing assembly via the twin belt drive. Each motor is individually hand tuned to its own custom power supply in the factory to minimise vibration, motor noise and ensure optimum performance.

Skeletal plinth design with polyolefin foam core

Controversially Rega has always researched methods of producing light but stiff and rigid plinths. The technology is simple: unwanted noise at microscopic levels is developed by the turntable motor and main bearing. The plinth can also pick up airborne vibration from the music. From the beginning in the 1970's Rega pioneered the use of a stressed skin structure for the plinth. This uses two layers of phenolic resin with a lightweight particle or fibre board sandwiched between the skins. This technique has been used in many applications where stiff, light structures are needed such as an aircraft wing or a Formula 1 chassis.

The current increase in interest in turntables has allowed Rega to research and develop higher technology structures for the customer who is happy pay a little more for higher sound quality. The all new RP10 turntable utilises a unique new stressed skin structure produced from thin phenolic skins sandwiching a featherweight nitrogen expanded, closed cell, polyolefin foam core. This material has been developed exclusively for Rega over a three year period. The RP10 plinth is 7 times lighter than the weight of the original Planar 3 plinth. Rega has added even more stiffness in the crucial area between the arm and the main bearing.

De-coupled outer frame and dust cover

A common problem for many skeletal design turntables is the inability to incorporate an effective dust cover into the design. We have constructed an outer frame that minimises contact between the inner and outer plinth. The only points of contact are three location devices on the feet which centralises the inner and outer plinths perfectly. This makes set-up extremely easy and allows the use of a dust cover. The RP10 can be used without the outer frame if so desired.

    Turntable design & mythology

Today there are many approaches to Hi-Fi design which follow established and informed engineering or electronic principles. Amplifier and loudspeaker design has been well documented over the years with excellent technical publications. These subjects have been based on tried and tested acoustic criteria and many computer software programs now exist that enable a near amateur to design a passable working loudspeaker based on known acoustic and mathematical parameters.

Enter turntable design: When it comes to turntable design we are limited to a few poorly informed articles describing only very limited aspects of design. This is a subject full of mythology. Designers propose theories that counter the basic laws of physics, use terminology that doesn't actually exist in the engineering world, build products that are more like beautiful sculptures than acoustic reproduction machines and sell items costing tens of thousands of pounds that hardly function as intended and often fail to work at all.

For instance a very common myth is "the heavier the better" concept. Turntable bases weighing tens of kilograms are not uncommon. The reality is that the base actually needs to be as light as possible to prevent unwanted bearing and motor noise being transferred to the turntable or record. Platters also fall under a similar myth with many platter designs becoming so heavy that it is impossible to design a correctly functioning bearing (and some so light that anyone can hear the speed inconsistency). The turntable platter itself needs to be of enough weight to spin at a constant speed within the confines of the chosen bearing and motor drive system.

Many amateur designers in any field choose one component in a design and try to achieve an extreme in size, weight and quality. They believe that by taking one theory to its extreme the design will become "perfect". The reality of all engineering, design (and life) is that perfection is not possible. Based on this reality, Rega's goal has always been to optimise a mixture of numerous "correct compromises" thus bringing the designer nearer to the unachievable goal of perfection.

    Aida Cartridge

Have a question about this product? Please email our audio advisor or call 1-877-929-8729 with any questions or concerns regarding your equipment purchase.

"The Aida" cartridge by The Soundsmith (formerly SMMC1) is a Stereophile A RATED cartridge. That is the price is no object range. Where are we in the price range of those cartridges? At the bottom. There isn't anyone even close to our price. Did Michael Fremer take some flack for doing that? You bet. How did he respond?? he said - I put it in that group - because it deserved to BE in that group.

We build it with love and respect for your hard earned dollars.

    Here is the micro-manufacturing reality:

All top end cartridges from all manufacturers are hand made. The real issue is that when you are manufacturing something so tiny, that has to perform so well, that all of them are NOT the same. If you don't see this statement from other manufacturers, then this is a secret they don't want to share, and quite understandably so.

    So... what does Soundsmith do??

We carefully hand build each and every cartridge, test them, and keep accurate records by serial number of their performance. Those that meet or exceed specifications are sold. But, there are always a few that don't measure well. What do we do with them? We don't sell them. We break them down and re-use some parts that can be used again. Does this cost real money ? You bet. But what it does do is this.....the ones that DO pass our stringent testing out-perform many cartridges selling for two, three, four, or even five times the price. Are we unabashedly proud of our hand-made cartridges??

    YES.

    Some ask:

Moving Iron Cartridges better?? I thought that moving COIL types are the best??

Our cartridges overturn the myth that moving coil cartridges are the only path towards perfection. After all, what is the accepted "advantage" of moving coil cartridges? Low effective moving mass, right? Well, we've got less. Much less. And if you understand EFFECTIVE moving mass, Less IS more. Why is that good? Because when you lower the moving system mass, it's easier to control. If it's easier to control, the stylus can stay in better contact with the groove walls. That's good, because if you can't stay in contact with the groove walls, you can't hear what's on the record.

Is a high gain moving coil preamp required? No. Aida" is designed to be used with a Moving Magnet preamp. No step-up transformers. No finicky multi-stage ultra high gain preamp required. Less is more here, too.

Once you've heard your new Aida cartridge, you'll never go back. The price?? Oh yes, "less is more" applies here too... $1800.00

    Zephyr MK/III Cartridge

Have a question about this product? Please email our audio advisor or call 1-877-929-8729 with any questions or concerns regarding your equipment purchase.

The new Zephyr MK III has achieved what no other cartridge has done since its inception; rapid recognition as a leading force in phono cartridge design and performance.

The Soundsmith Zephyr MkIII enjoys a great history, starting with the well loved VPI Zephyr original, which evolved into the well known Zephyr MKII. In our effort to bring you even higher definition without increase in cost, we introduce the NEW Zephyr MKIII. It features a newly developed aluminum alloy - the same one we are now using in the Paua MKII, just released. This new metal alloy has unique dualistic properties, providing stiffness in the ranges required as well as damping exactly where its needed - and by the proper amount - in the most critical parts of the sonic spectrum. The result is a cartridge that will slam your Rock and Roll while providing a new level of linearity and clarity for the most complex classical and jazz passages.

Attached to our new cantilever material is a tiny new super low mass High Profile Contact Line diamond we have developed for the new Zephyr MKIII. This stylus traces more of the groove walls than a standard contact line, but avoids some of the alignment pitfalls that can occur with a high profile contact line design, allowing more azimuth alignment forgiveness than is normally possible with such designs.

These improvements are paired with technology borrowed from our higher end line; Trickle Down technology from a unique Dynamic Energy Management System (DEMS) developed by Soundsmith that moves the damped energy and propagates it properly within the cartridge body. This is a similar system we employ in the Soundsmith's well received and reviewed high end Sussurro Cartridge.

The new Zephyr MKIII is capable of truly remarkable separation and sound stage imaging at a level not previously achievable in a modestly priced design. The composite body and unique DEMS design work in tandem to contribute to the Zephyr MkIII's ability to produce high-end performance from a moderately priced cartridge. Be prepared to sit back and realize......you may have never really heard your record collection before.

The Zephyr MkIII will provide a level of clarity and beauty that will make you take out your record collection and listen to it all over again.

WINNER! ANALOG PRODUCT OF THE YEAR 2009 - TONEAUDIO

"The Voice" cartridge by The Soundsmith makes a clear statement amidst the other voices of high performance phono cartridges.

Our statement?? Ikebana. Less is more.

It overturns the myth that moving coil cartridges are the only path towards perfection. After all, what is the "advantage" of the moving coil type of cartridge? Low effective moving mass, right? We got less. Much less. And if you understand moving mass, Less IS more.

The 40 year evolution of "The Voice" cartridge affords lower effective moving mass than any of them. Far lower. It even has 40% less than our other moving iron designs! Why is that good? Because when you lower the moving mass, it's easier to control. If it's easier to control, the stylus can stay in better contact with the groove walls. That's good, because if you can't stay in contact with the groove walls, you can't hear what's on the record.

Rega have designed and developed its own coil winding machine. This allows us to manufacture coils in a completely new and innovative way. This means approximately one third less wire is used than in our other cartridges, making the Exact even more
    efficient than the Elys.

    Cantilever

The Exact has a highly expensive non removable cantilever, fitted with a "Vital" diamond tip. This tip fits into the record groove more precisely than the usual elliptical type, allowing more information to be gleaned from the records.

    Assembly

Because of the design and extremely high tolerances of Rega cartridges, our assembly methods owe more to watch making than the assembly line. Every one is hand built, and the highly skilled operatives use little more than tweezers and microscopes. Each
cartridge is then adjusted and tested twice over a 24 hour period. Such methods are expensive and time consuming but we feel the results are worth it. We hope you do too!

ANIA, REGA'S FIRST FORAY INTO THE WORLD OF BUDGET MC CARTS, IS REVOLUTIONARY JUST LIKE ITS BIG BROTHERS.

    APHETA, A BRIEF HISTORY:

When Rega first announced the original Apheta in 2006, it changed the way people looked at the design of moving coil cartridges. Crafted without the tie-wire that plagued most every other MC cartridge, Apheta was iconoclastic like many Rega products. It was fast, clear, dynamic and insightful, garnering praise in many quarters of the high-end audio world. In 2015 and 2016, respectively, Rega pushed forward with new designs that brought about the reference Aphelion ($4995) and reborn Apheta 2 ($1895). These two carts are based on the original concepts but with the benefit of almost 10 years of experience and a complete overhaul of the cartridge manufacturing facilities. Now, Rega can build moving coil cartridges with a level of precision, speed, reliability, and height of technology they could only dream about way back when.

    ANIA, MOVING FORWARD:

Having surmounted the challenge of perfecting the original and expanding their horizons, Rega set their eyes on fashioning a moving coil cartridge for less than half the price of the Apheta 2. Now, your first thought might be there's no way to preserve quality while lowering the price, and if this weren't Rega you might be right. But they are who they are, 40+ year specialists at making things better and more reasonably priced.

Rega leaned hard on its engineers' expertise and that of their suppliers. The first challenge was to construct a new cartridge body that preserved that benefits and lowered the cost from the aluminum-bodied Apheta 2, a marvel in its own right. Here, computer modeling and expert tool making allowed Rega to build a body from PPS-Fortron, a sophisticated polymer-glass amalgam, that has a complex shape, keeping strength high, mass low, and unwanted resonances to an absolute minimum. The result is simply astonishing.

Of course, Ania would not be a Rega moving coil if not for its unique tie-wire-less design. The tie-wire was originally conceived as a method to secure the cantilever, but this introduces nasty resonances that have to tuned-out with the undesired after effect of reducing detail and speed, unfortunately. Being the curious types and unwilling to compromise, Rega's engineers sought out a method that eliminates the pesky tie-wire. Thus was born the pivot pad, a rhomboid-shaped device that positively locates the cantilever, adds zero mass, improves strength, and allows free movement so that the stylus can more accurately track the groove. Brilliant!

The generator of Ania is then formed by a floating iron cross attached to the inner tip of the cantilever, hand-wound with incredibly fine ultra-high purity copper wire. This iron cross is some 50% smaller than the original Apheta, making it one of the smallest, lightest weight generators in the world! These parts, including the high-power neodymium magnet, are borrowed directly from the doubly-priced Apheta 2. An elliptical stylus tops off the lightweight aluminum cantilever, while a CAD-designed plastic case protects the delicate internals from prying fingers and well-meaning feather dusters.

All in all, the new Rega Ania moving coil cartridge demonstrates precisely what makes Rega great- unique solutions to age-old dilemmas, a commitment to quality, commanding performance, and a reasonable price. Did we mention, it's all still built in the UK?

    Cartridge Break-In Test Record

Multiple endless grooves of pink noise for cartridge break-in and other tracks for cartridge set-up

Phono cartridges usually need a running-in period to reach their full potential. This can take anything from 40 to 100 hours, depending upon the manufacturer, design and construction of the phono cartridge.

This Clearaudio Cartridge Break-In Record is a unique too. Playing an endless groove cut with pink noise significantly reduces the length of the break-in period.

Six continuous pink noise tracks are provided at various positions on the record (track numbers are 5, 6, 7, 9, 10 and 11).

To enable frequency response measurement of the phono cartridge, track 3 comprises a sine-wave frequency sweep from 20 Hz to 20 kHz.

There are two separate 240-second tracks containing a pink noise signal for measuring and testing the set-up of the whole system.

Tracks 4 and 13 are recorded with no signal to test the noise floor of the entire hi-fi system.

Finally, tracks 8 and 12 contain a special signal to optimise and adjust the anti-skating force. Both channels are recorded with a 316 Hz sine-wave with continually changing phase difference from 0 to 360 deg, so that the stylus movement repeatedly changes from lateral to vertical and back again. The signal level changes accordingly from -22 dB to +8 dB, corresponding to a maximum velocity of 9.81 cm/s or a maximum displacement of 50 lm, horizontally or vertically.

    Reference Series Platinum Cartridge

    4.0 mV Output

The newly redesigned Platinum1 and Sonata1 have had their coil design reconfigured, and the effective moving mass of their generating system has been reduced by 17%. All this is hand-assembled within a machined, new processed, Australian Jarrah wood housing. The Platinum1 and Sonata1 models use a modified four piece OTL cantilever technology achieving a 10% tip mass reduction over the Prestige series and ultra-high purity long crystal (UHPLC) oxygen free copper wire in the coils. The Platinum model uses Grado's specially designed elliptical diamond mounted on a brass bushing, and the Sonata model uses Grado's specially designed nude elliptical diamond.

"Let me say straight out: like the Maggie 1.6QRs or the Goldman SRA, the Grado Platinum is one of those incredible bargains that doesn't just give you a "taste" of high fidelity but pretty much the whole enchilada for the price of, er, a whole enchilada."

    - Fi magazine / Jonathan Valin Vol.3, No.11

"A prime advantage/disadvantage of phono reproduction is that every cartridge sounds different. Choosing one is like selecting wine, a process easy to get lost in. But if the cartridge is good enough, like Grado's Platinum, you'll get lost in the music."

    - Audio / Ivan Berger Vol.82, No. 2

    Statement Series The Statement Cartridge

    0.5 mV Output

GRADO RE-MAKES THEIR STATEMENT1! After years of careful thought and painstaking design Grado is very pleased to offer their upgraded flagship phono cartridge. We are so proud of this cartridge and believe that it has so much to say about Grado technology, that it was named the GRADO STATEMENT1. The STATEMENT1 utilizes reconfigured gold coil wires, a lower mass faster generating system, a boron cantilever and a diamond cut specially for Grado. All this is hand-assembled within a machined, new processed, Australian Jarrah wood housing. The output for the STATEMENT1 measures at 0.5 mV. The lowest output ever offered by Grado. The low frequency information and its portrayal of bass dynamics are solid, powerful and authoritative. The midrange is rich, complex and highly believable. Its top-end seems to extend forever with speed and remarkable delicacy. Imaging is detailed and precise with a sound stage that wraps its arms around you and draws you into the music. Michael Fremer commented in his Analog Corner, "It is among the finest cartridges I've ever heard at any price", Stereophile 3/99, pg. 41. While Jonathan Valin stated, "I'm going to keep the Statement in my reference system" The Absolute Sound, Issue 118. Anyone who was impressed with our previous top-of-the-line effort, the Grado REFERENCE, will have their eyes opened wide after listening to the GRADO STATEMENT1!

"I'm having way too much fun listening to my best LPs to worry about the technical stuff. You have to listen to music sometime, and the Grado Statement 1 has transported me to phono Shangri La. If you can scrape together the dough or even if cost is no object, buy the Grado Statement 1 and don't look back. It will redefine your analog experience and is a world beater design. Moving coils move over, there's a new kid in town. The Grado Statement 1 is state of the art and most highly recommended. Way to go Grado!"

    - Positive Feedback / Robert H. Levi

"The Statement consistently did a fine job of reproducing detail, and it was able to do so during both loud and complex passages."

Factory Fitted With Apheta 2 Moving Coil Cartridge

    The Rega RP10 skeletal turntable.

Rega is extremely pleased to announce the launch of the much awaited RP10.

Rega's design philosophy extends further than ever before with advanced components built around our radical new plinth design. Featuring the brand new RB2000 tonearm, a ceramic flywheel effect platter and the custom RP10 power supply (allowing total control and accuracy over both motor vibration and speed performance) guarantee the highest level of performance from a Rega turntable to date.
