    Sings the Blues (Speakers Corner)

In both her public and private life, Nina Simone was adamant about one thing, namely, what she simply would not tolerate. She sometimes complained about the miserable erotic prowess of her lovers, while at other times her audience were a target for her tongue. Sometimes she cancelled her performances at short notice and held a tirade against show business as such. In her music, rooted in gospel, she sought a path which took her down a middle course between jazz and pop, thus earning her the title of High Priestess Of Soul (as in the LP title) with her rock fans in the Sixties.

The present blues album was recorded during what was undisputedly her most productive phase. It is a recording which does not swim with the tide of the times in that it does not employ massive forces or seek the twang of electrification. Instead Nina Simone's wonderfully sleek contralto voice bathes in the gentle timbre of an organ and a pithy, pulsating - but by no means stomping - rhythm. The cool, unemotional number "Sings The Blues" guarantees riveting tension and the authenticity of the genre which is, of course, the be all and end all of music for every black artist. Surely no compilation, no matter how carefully conceived, could possibly mark the diva's 70th birthday in February and sudden death in April 2203 better than this re-release.

    Musicians:

    • Nina Simone (piano, vocal)

    • Rudy Stevenson, Eric Gale (guitar)

    • Ernest Hayes (organ)

    • Bob Bushnell (bass)

    • Bernard Purdie (drums)

Recording: 1967 by Ray Hall and Mickey Crofford at RCA Victor's Studio B, New York

    Production: Danny Davis

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Originally released in 1967, Silk & Soul was nominated for a Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in 1968 for the song You'll Go To Hell. Aretha Franklin won the award over Simone.

Besides the Grammy nominated tune, the album includes Simone's version of Bacharach's The Look of Love which was written for the 1967 movie Casino Royale.

After moving from the blues to soul for her second RCA album, Nina Simone's extroverted, confident delivery proved a natural match with the ranks of soul shouters working the crowds during the late '60s. ... the less familiar tunes, like the highlight It Be's That Way Sometimes (written by Simone's brother Sam Waymon), Go to Hell, and I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free, a trio of songs Nina Simone has no trouble making her own. - John Bush, allmusic.com

    Little Girl Blue

Little Girl Blue is the debut album by Jazz singer/pianist/songwriter Nina Simone for Bethlehem Records.

It was also released as Jazz As Played in an Exclusive Side Street Club.

Nina was in her mid-20s at the time of this album, and still aspiring to be a classical concert pianist.

She immediately sold the rights for the songs on this album to Bethlehem for $3,000.

In the end, this cost her royalty profits of more than a million dollars.

Simone was dissatisfied by the lack of effort the record company took in promoting her, and after this album she went over for a long relationship with Colpix Records.

    Pastel Blues

Nina Simone is hands down one of the best Blues singers of the 20th century and only artists the likes of Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith had the power to lay a soul bare like she could! This is no better exemplified than on Pastel Blues' stripped-down album opener Be My Husband, which was later covered famously by Jeff Buckley. Also featured on this beloved 1965 Philips Records release are dazzling interpretations of songs directly related to the aforementioned songstresses including Nobody Knows When You're Down And Out, originally sung by Smith and Holiday's signature song Strange Fruit, not to mention the traditional spiritual Sinnerman, which remains one of Simone's most popular recordings. At long last, Pastel Blues is back on vinyl courtesy of this Music On Vinyl 180g audiophile reissue!

    Wild Is The Wind

Nina Simone's sixth album for Philips Records was Wild Is the Wind, released in 1966. The album was compiled from several recordings that were left over from sessions for previous Philips albums. The song Four Women was released as a single, and gained attention when banned by the New York jazz focused radio station WLIB due to concern over the lyrics. Wild Is The Wind was covered by David Bowie on his 1976 studio recording Station to Station.

Nina Simone and Piano! (Speakers Corner)

Musicians certainly don't have it easy with record companies. First of all they must struggle to even get a contract. Then, when their debut release has proved a success, they are bandied around from one arranger to another in all the recording studios imaginable. But having been treated with such sounds as a snappy combo, meaty bigband, and smoochy string orchestra, there at last comes an opportunity for some artists to be themselves again.

This album wholly concentrates on Nina Simone and demonstrates that she does not need help from anyone else in order to bring her strikingly expressive voice into the limelight. Accompanying her in her songs about loneliness, identity crises, and desires is her faithful friend, the piano, which she masters equally as well as her voice. The piano parts are far more than just casual accompaniments. Varying from number to number, they range from a classical, bluesy sound, to late-Romantic fervour, right up to avantgarde aggression. And yet all these pieces have something in common: filled with bizarre beauty, they portray a complex personality with all its ups and downs.

Little Girl Blue was Nina Simone's debut release. Bethlehem founder Gus Wildi, taken with the uniquely beautiful quality of her voice, gave her complete control over song selection, backing musicians, arrangements and production of the recording. Nina and her rhythm section recorded the entire album plus three additional tracks in just one session. In her biography of Nina, Nadine Cohodas recounts engineer Irv Greeenbaum's recollection of that day: Nothing like Nina's artistry had ever happened before ... Her voice and the keyboard playing were so rich and interesting that they could have stood alone.

Little Girl Blue documents Nina Simone's unparalleled and idiosyncratic musical persona at a particularly vibrant, formative stage, and helped launch her on a trajectory with more than its share of personal and professional trials and triumphs.

    Little Girl Blue (Pure Pleasure)

Little Girl Blue, released in 1957, was Nina Simone's first recording, originally issued on the Bethlehem label. Backed by bassist Jimmy Bond and Albert 'Tootie' Heath, it showcases her ballad voice as one of mystery and sensuality and showcases her up-tempo jazz style with authority and an enigmatic down-home feel that is nonetheless elegant. The album also introduced a fine jazz pianist. Simone was a solid improviser who never strayed far from the blues. Check the opener, her reading of Duke Ellington's Mood Indigo, which finger-pops and swings while keeping the phrasing deep-blue. It is contrasted immediately with one of the -- if not the -- definitive reads of Willard Robison's steamy leave-your-lover ballad Don't Smoke in Bed. The title track, written by Rodgers & Hart, features Good King Wenceslas as a classical prelude to one of the most beautiful pop ballads ever written. It is followed immediately by the funky swing in Love Me or Leave Me with a smoking little piano solo in the bridge where Bach meets Horace Silver and Bobby Timmons.

It's also interesting to note that while this was her first recording, the record's grooves evidence an artist who arrives fully formed; many of the traits Simone displayed throughout her career as not only a vocalist and pianist but as an arranger are put on first notice here. My Baby Just Cares for Me has a stride shuffle that is extrapolated on in the piano break. Her instrumental and improvising skills are put to good use on Tadd Dameron's Good Bait, which is transformed into something classical from its original bebop intent. You'll Never Walk Alone feels more like some regal gospel song than the Rodgers & Hammerstein show tune it was. Of course, one of Simone's signature tunes was her version of I Loves You, Porgy, which appears here for the first time and was released as a single. Her own Central Park Blues is one of the finest jazz tunes here.

Nina At The Village Gate (Pure Pleasure)

In the intimate ambiance of The Village Gate, Nina Simone made pure magic with her voice and on the keyboard, one Manhattan evening back in 1961. She sang and played with a trio, which featured her favorite guitarist, Al Shackman. We are so fortunate that the moment was captured and recorded.

I can't really categorize Nina's sound or her music and call her 'just' a fabulous jazz vocalist. Although, she plays extraordinary jazz with her voice, as in Just In Time. She has been often called a musical anomaly, because there is no one category for her work. She was trained as a classical pianist, and in cuts like Bye Bye Blackbird, the complexity of her piano comes through loud and clear. Her folk songs, like the biting House Of The Rising Sun, and Zungo, an African work song, place her at the top of a long list of folk singers. Ms. Simone's gospel songs, i.e., Children Go Where I Send You, can raise the roof and bring down the house, as she did at the Gate in '61. She is a protest singer, Brown Baby, and an actress, capable of an extraordinary range of emotions.

Nina has the rare ability to dig into her material and bring unexpected meaning to familiar lyrics. She is eclectic with her taste and her repertoire. But whatever touches Nina, and whatever Nina touches, will reach you and evoke an emotional response. Her music is as fresh today, as it was 42 years ago, singing for that Manhattan audience. They could not have loved her more then, than we do now.

I Put A Spell On You

I Put a Spell on You is the 1965 album by Nina Simone, and features some of her best known songs. I Put a Spell on You is a song originally by Screamin' Jay Hawkins. The original version gave the song an ironic theme, but Simone transformed it into a thrilling love song, complete with horns and strings. It had become one of her most well-known songs. She used the title for her autobiography I Put A Spell On You (1992).

    Nina Simone Sings Ellington

Originally released in 1962, here Nina pays homage to the man most responsible for bringing jazz music out of the shadows and into every home in America. Duke Ellington changed our country's very cultural fabric, while giving us a hugely improved soundtrack to go along with it. Simone, a classically trained pianist herself, aligns herself with this great American tradition, adding new layers of meaning to standards like "I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)" and "Satin Doll", in a way that always left fans clamouring for more.

    Nina At Town Hall

One of Nina Simone's finest recordings, this 1959 Colpix LP features the unique singer/pianist performing classic versions of 'Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair,' 'The Other Woman,' and 'Wild Is the Wind.' With supportive work from bassist Jimmy Bond and drummer Al 'Tootie' Heath, she also sounds fine on a few instrumentals. 'Summertime' is performed twice, once as a vocal. From the start of her career, Nina Simone carved out her own unique niche, meshing together her classical piano technique with folk singing, civil rights protest lyrics and jazz. All of those elements are in evidence on this highly recommended set. Original artwork.

    Black Gold

In 1969, the High Priestess Of Soul, Nina Simone, descended onto the stage of the Philharmonic Hall in New York to record her new live-album, Black Gold.

It became a legendary performance, with the first recording of the Civil Rights song 'To Be Young, Gifted And Black',
a song which is not addressed to white people primarily. Though it doesn't put you down in any way...it simply ignores you. For my people need all the inspiration and love that they can get.

Black Gold also contains a rendition of Sandy Denny's 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes,' in a minimalist arrangement that ends in an uplifting orchestration true to both the writer of the song and the performer. Throughout the entire performance Ms Simone keeps a regal, aloof and sometimes goofy composure, her monologues in between songs ushering the listener a little closer to her moving performance.

Her eclectic style takes us past a number of different music forms; past Soul and Gospel and Folk, Jazz and Broadway; her androgynous and distinctive timbre floats somewhere between melancholy and bliss, and yet we always feel that Ms Simone is taking us exactly where she wants us to go.

Overall, Black Gold is a poignant and touching album from the peak of her performing and recording period that should not be overlooked.

    Forbidden Fruit (Pure Pleasure)

To call Nina Simone a jazz singer is to neglect the depth and range of her artistry. A classical pianist, folk singer, protest singer, and songwriter, her arrangements are harmonically rich, varied, and rhythmically experimental, while her voice can go from lounge singer-smooth to raw and exposed in the space of a verse.

The tracks on Sides 1 & 2 comprise 1961's masterful Forbidden Fruit album. While no session information exists to confirm this, Schackman, Hamilton and White were likely accompanying Nina when she recorded the eleven songs that comprise Sides 3 & 4, seven of which are from the small archive of previously unreleased tracks left in the Colpix vaults; and four of which were included on the Nina's final Colpix release, 1963's "Nina Simone With Strings".

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

    Sings The Blues

Originally released in 1967, this is Nina Simones debut release for RCA Records. Featuring a stellar backing band that includes, amongst others, Eric Gale and Bernard Pretty Purdie, Sings The Blues is an incredible mix of blues, soul, gospel, folk, jazz and more.

With Nina handling piano and vocal duties, the band slow burns through a killer selection of songs (including a track from Porgy & Bess and one whose lyrics are penned by the immortal Langston Hughes). Another fine 180g vinyl reissue with a deluxe tip-on jacket from 4 Men With Beards.

    Sings The Blues

Nina Simone Sings The Blues (1967) can rightfully be called a true classic in both Soul and Blues genres. The album is a showcase for the intensity of Nina's soulful croon and demanding piano skills, accompanied by a marvelous backing band with Eric Gale and Rudy Stevenson on guitar, Bob Bushnell on bass, drummer Bernard 'Pretty' Purdie, Ernie Hayes on organ and Buddy Lucas on both harmonica and sax.

With a song selection that ranks among the best Blues tunes ever written, this record goes back to the essence of the Blues - raw and honest spine-shivering melodies.
