    Nilsson Sings Newman (Speakers Corner)

When two talented, cussed men such as Harry Nilsson and Randy Newman get together to record an album, you can be sure of an exceptional record filled with great vocals and poetry. Nilsson, who is described as a man who performs his songs with one cynical, laughing eye and one nostalgic, tearful eye in Rowohlt's Rock-Lexikon, finds inspiration in the then relatively unknown Newman, a docile but caustic social critic who often attacked American society in his songs.

In the layers and harmonies achieved partly by overdubbing, and which alternate between cowshed, barbershop and the Beatles, Nilsson manages to make his bitter words somewhat easier to digest. He relates the bizarre chronicle of a couple who have a dull relationship and who morbidly look forward to passing away in an old people's home (Love Story), or he swears his undying love to a certain Caroline in springtime, or he is transported back in time in his mind's eye to an idyllic little town in the countryside (Dayton, Ohio 1903). A weighty musical background would lend nothing to these highly sophisticated songs. Piano chords, a little bit of electric harpsichord, and a tinkle on the organ keys here and there suffice to dally in an old-fashioned manner - with a sarcastic smile or even a nasty grin - in the desolation of reality, without getting the blues.

    Musicians:

    • Harry Nilsson (vocal, keyboards, percussion)

    • Randy Newman (piano)

Recording: August - October 1969 at RCA's Music Center of the World, Hollywood, by Grover Helsley

    Production: Harry Nilsson

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

First Time Vinyl Rare Mixes, Rare Stereo Versions & Alternate Tracks

Mastered Impeccably From The Colgems Records Tapes By Joe Reagoso

1968 was an interesting year for The Monkees. Aside from releasing more hit singles & another smash Lp with The Birds The Bees & The Monkees, future superstar and upcoming filmmaker Jack Nicholson, Bob Rafelson & The Monkees were developing the concept for a psychedelic film about this successful rock band who were trying to escape from their manufactured image. Albeit an underlying glimpse of reality, the movie wound up being a swan song for the original line-up of the band until 1996's Justus. As the Head movie was underrated at the time, it has since gone on to become ranked as one of the finest films in the rock genre.

The original soundtrack of Head by The Monkees has a history itself as being one of their strongest albums with stellar material ranging from The Monkees' Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork, plus more great tracks from Harry Nilsson and Carole King with musical help from friends like Carole King, Stephen Stills and Dewey Martin from Buffalo Springfield.

A hit single emerged with Porpoise Song featuring the powerful lead vocal of Micky Dolenz, as the rest of the album is interwoven with keen Monkees dialog and skits that were in the original film, plus the stellar score by Ken Thorne.

In honor of The Monkees, Friday Music is once again pleased to continue the celebration of the Monkees Golden Anniversary with The Monkees Head Alternate. This first-time vinyl album features first-time vinyl versions of Porpoise Song, rarities like Can You Dig It with Peter Tork's vocal, Daddy's Song remixed with the long sought after Davy Jones' slow verse, and the rare stereo mix of Circle Sky.

Produced by The Monkees in 1968, this stunning new version is now impeccably mastered by Monkees fan and friend Joe Reagoso and pressed on 180 Gram Audiophile Translucent Gold Vinyl.

For the very limited Golden Anniversary edition, the LP cover will be manufactured with a stunning gold foil front and back, featuring a rare alternate color photo of the band on the back cover.

    Reservoir Dogs Soundtrack

    25th Anniversary Edition

Could you think of any other film producer that picks better soundtracks than the widely revered Quentin Tarantino? Inventing a genre on his own, his string of best-selling nouvelle violence movies started out in 1992 with the low budget cult classic Reservoir Dogs.

The film follows a band of criminals preparing for a diamond heist and follows the characters in the crime's aftermath. Its cast consists of sublime actors such as Harvey Keitel (whose comeback was a direct result of this film), Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Chris Penn (Sean's brother) and Steve Buscemi as the legendary character of Mr. Pink. The film's sparkling dialog catapulted Reservoir Dogs to eternal cult status and remains a favorite among movie fans all over the world, a fame to which its soundtrack contributed a great deal.

Music On Vinyl is proud to release these so-called 'Super Sounds Of The Seventies', a selection of unusual and sometimes wacky hits by artists such as Stealers Wheel, Harry Nilsson (Coconut is included on Nilsson Schmilsson [MOVLP279]) and Joe Tex. The movie also raised public interest in the Dutch band George Baker Selection, due to the use of his Little Green Bag in the film's opening titles. Keep On Truckin'!

Exactly 25 years ago this cult film was released in theatre.

    Aerial Ballet

    180 Gram Pressed At RTI

    Mono

Aerial Ballet solidified Nilsson's craft as a singer-songwriter par excellence. His pen is decidedly sharper in songs like "Together," "One" and "Don't Leave Me," which deal with the insecurities and fatalities of romance. Suicide is explored in "I Said Goodbye to Me," and the subjects of fame ("Mr. Richland's Favorite Song") and fatherhood ("Daddy's Song") get their drubbing in scat-filled soft-shoe style. This Sundazed edition presents the 1968 mono mix of this treasured work-scarce then, and virtually impossible to locate in the decades since-from the original master reels, with restored artwork. Also included is "Daddy's Song," a tune quickly deleted from the original pressings that features a noticeably different vocal arrangement in its monaural form, and the original first-issue single mix of "Everybody's Talkin'," among other highlights. A unique version seen only briefly when issued and virtually untouchable in the intervening years, Aerial Ballet in mono, pressed at R.T.I., is now available on 180 gram vinyl.

    Nilsson Schmilsson

Harry Nilsson could be one of the more neglected but great singer-songwriters of the 20th century. John Lennon & Paul McCartney both named him as their favourite American singer in a 1968 press conference.

The Monkees, Fred Astaire, the Yardbirds, and later artists such as Aimee Mann and Mariah Carey recorded his songs.

But ask the average Joe about him, and they probably won't know that he was the man behind classics such as 'Everybody's Talkin', 'One' and 'Without You'.

Harry had a taste for Tin Pan Alley songs & McCartney-esque melodies, but his impish wit and impressive vocal range give his songs an extra dimension.

Nilsson Schmilsson contains his biggest hit 'Without You', along with other classics such as the faux-tropical song 'Coconut' and the bluesy 'Early In The Morning'.

This album is more accessible and cohesive than any of his other albums and received a number of Grammy nominations on its 1971 release, yet it still manages to keep the mischievous and slightly off-kilter humour.

    Instant Replay

The Monkees have been one of the world's most enduring rock and pop acts of all time. Since their beginnings in 1966, their television show, multiplatinum albums, hit singles and concert tours truly made The Monkees one of the most colossal stories in the music business. In 1969, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith and Micky Dolenz went back to the studio as a trio this time and recorded the classic Instant Replay album. Noted for their hit single Tear Drop City, this masterwork also found The Monkees reuniting with the production team of Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart for several of the tracks as well as previous team Monkees writers like Carole King and Neil Sedaka, and highly touted producers like Bones Howe (The Association/Tom Waits) and Shorty Rogers and resulted in some of the finest collaborations ever with this superstar act. Instant Replay also offered the first look at Michael Nesmith's experimental and groundbreaking recording sessions in Nashville as well as solid compositions from all three Monkees.

Opening up with the pop rocker Through The Looking Glass, Micky Dolenz is on top of his game vocally with a brilliant background of horns, Bobby Hart on piano and guitar work by legends Keith Allison (Paul Revere & The Raiders) and Gerry McGee (The Ventures/John Mayall). A major fan favorite, this classic was performed at many of the reunion concerts over the years. The late great Davy Jones belts out another Boyce and Hart classic with the haunting ballad Don't Listen To Linda. The tune truly resonated with the fans back then and continues to be one of the more appreciated classics in his long list of time tested Monkees favorites. Carole King and Gerry Goffin's I Won't Be The Same Without Her features a strong vocal performance by Michael Nesmith and the stunning guitar work of both Monkees' Peter Tork and Glen Campbell. A real summer time feeling song, this track would be a nice bridge to Micky Dolenz's orchestral masterpiece Just A Game.

It is no secret that Nesmith was a fan of country music, but also lauded as one of the first pioneers of the country rock genre, not only with his contributions to the earlier Monkees' recordings as far back as Papa Gene's Blues, even for other noted artists like Linda Ronstadt for whom he penned her first smash single Different Drum. For the Instant Replay album, Nesmith ventured to Nashville's RCA Studios and cut Don't Wait For Me, the first released tune from his now famous Nashville sessions. With the fusion of country studio players and the voice and guitar of Michael Nesmith, The Monkees again were on the forefront of this new genre and would continue with this groundbreaking sound ever more so into future classics like The Monkees Present.

As the '60s would come to a close, Davy Jones would also contribute his major impact on the generation with his truly hip and psychedelic masterpiece You And I. Noted for its hard rock opening to side two, the track also features the stunning lead guitar textures of Neil Young who recently departed with The Buffalo Springfield. More favorites like Nesmith's While I Cry is one of the artist's finest compositions of the era. With Mike's beautiful acoustic guitar work and help from friends like Harry Nilsson, this ballad would truly become one of the more enduring songs from this 1969 classic Monkees album.

Neil Sedaka and Carol Bayer Sager contribute one of the classiest Monkees ballads ever with The Girl I Left Behind Me. Once again, the late great Davy Jones provides a superstar vocal second to none, with a soulful orchestra fill and band setting featuring the production and skillful piano work of Neil Sedaka, while Micky Dolenz would close out the album with his classic Shorty Blackwell. The whimsical tale of Micky's cat and a nod to his friends The Beatles' A Day In The Life, Shorty Blackwell would take almost a year to record and feature a bevy of the original wrecking crew of Hollywood musicians like drummer Jim Gordon (Eric Clapton/Traffic), Tommy Tedesco on guitar and even his sister Coco Dolenz on vocals. This track along with the other eleven tunes make this one of the more enduring and loved albums in the superior catalog of Monkees classics.

Friday Music is once again very honored to announce the continuation of The Monkees Friday Music 180 Gram Audiophile Series with the re-release of their 1969 masterwork Instant Replay. Mastered by Joe Reagoso (The Monkees/Elvis Presley/Brian Wilson) from the original Colgems Records tapes at Friday Music Studios, this first time audiophile vinyl release is also for a very short time being offered in limited edition red vinyl as well as a first time gatefold cover presentation.

    Aerial Ballet (Speakers Corner)

To define in a nutshell the music of Harry Nilsson in accordance with his personality can easily become a fiasco. The American singer-songwriter might well share his reputation as a multi-talented eccentric with a number of other musicians. However, his highly unusual style and his »satirical catchy pop songs [composed] with the sparkling eye of a cynic and the tearful eye of a nostalgic« (rororo Rock Lexicon) cannot be pigeonholed. Nilsson packaged derisive lines, spiced with a pinch of self-irony, in suspiciously pleasing yet carefully selected tunes. His cultivated and astonishingly supple voice basked to the full in bittersweet phrases, aided by elaborate, melting, slushy arrangements with strings and winds. Several of the wonderfully fresh numbers from Aerial Ballet reached top places in the charts. Everybody's Talkin' became world-famous through its use in the film Asphalt Cowboy and brought Nilsson his first Grammy award. The song One soared to the top ten of the charts. The other light and airy songs now invite you to create your very own hit list. Every single number makes great listening!

This Speakers Corner LP was remastered using pure analogue components only, from the master tapes through to the cutting head. All royalties and mechanical rights have been paid.

    Good Times!

Who's ready to have some fun with The Monkees as they celebrate their 50th anniversary? With a tour kicking off in May and the group's first new album in 20 years, GOOD TIMES!, releasing, Monkee-mania will be taking 2016 by storm!

GOOD TIMES! features all three surviving band members - Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork. The unmistakable voice of the late Davy Jones is also included with a vintage vocal featured on one song. To produce the new album, the band found the perfect musical co-conspirator in Grammy® and Emmy®-winning songwriter Adam Schlesinger (Fountains Of Wayne, Ivy).

Much like The Monkees' early albums, GOOD TIMES! features tracks written specifically for the band by some of the music world's most gifted songwriters, including Rivers Cuomo (Weezer), Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie), Andy Partridge (XTC), and Zach Rogue (Rogue Wave) as well as a song co-written by Noel Gallagher and Paul Weller. The album also includes songwriting contributions by Nesmith ("I Know What I Know") and Tork as well as producer Schlesinger.

To help bring the anniversary full circle, The Monkees completed songs for GOOD TIMES! that were originally recorded and written for the group during the 60s, including "Love To Love" by Neil Diamond, which features a vintage vocal by Jones. Harry Nilsson wrote the title track "Good Times," which he recorded at a session with Nesmith in January 1968. The production was never completed, so the band returned to the original session tape (featuring Nilsson's guide vocal) and have created a duet with his close friend Dolenz. "Good Times" will mark the first time Dolenz and Nilsson have sung together since Dolenz' May 1973 single "Daybreak." Other vintage 1960's tracks included on GOOD TIMES! feature L.A.'s famed "Wrecking Crew" of session musicians.

"This is one of the most exciting Monkee projects I've been involved in for decades!" says Dolenz. "Working with Adam Schlesinger has been a pure delight and the opportunity to sing a duet with my old buddy, Harry Nilsson, is just beyond cool!"

    I Love You, Honeybear

I Love You, Honeybear was recorded intermittently from 2013 to 2014 in Echo Park, Los Angeles and produced with Jonathan Wilson, whom I also recorded and produced 2012's Fairly Fun with. There's a case to be made that it sounds and acts a bit like solo-era John Lennon, Scott Walker, Randy Newman, Harry Nilsson, and Dory Previn, while taking more than a few cues from Woody Allen, Kurt Vonnegut, Alejandro Jodorowsky and Muhammad Ali. Blammo.

It has a decidedly more soulful presence than Fear Fun, due in no small part to the fact that I am truly singing my ass off all over this motherfucker. The album is really characterized by the scope and ambition of the arrangements. Nearly every tune is augmented by something special, be it orchestral strings, a mariachi band, questionable electronic drum solos, ragtime jazz combos, soul singers, or what have you. I'm pretty sure there's a sitar in there somewhere. Blammo. My ambition, aside from making an indulgent, soulful, and epic sound worthy of the subject matter, was to address the sensuality of fear, the terrifying force of love,
the unutterable pleasures of true intimacy, and the destruction of emotional and intellectual prisons in my own voice. Blammo.

This material demanded a new way of being made, and it took a lot of time before the process revealed itself. The massive, deranged shmaltz I heard in my head, and knew had to be the sound of this record, originated a few years ago while Emma and I were hallucinating in Joshua Tree; the same week I wrote the title track. I chased that sound for the entire year and half we were recording. The means by which it was achieved bore a striking resemblance to the travails, abandon and transformation of loving someone. There: I said it. Blammo.

    Flash Harry

Harry Nilsson's Last Album, Unavailable For Over 30 Years!

Finally Released For The First Time Ever In North America.

Paul McCartney and John Lennon described him as the Beatles' favorite group, he won Grammy awards, wrote and recorded hit songs, and yet no figure in popular music is as much of a paradox, or as underrated, as Harry Nilsson.

Flash Harry was the 16th and final album released by Harry Nilsson. Originally issued only on vinyl in the U.K. and Japan. This legendary album has never been released in the U.S. The album features Nilsson's own recording of Old Dirt Road, co-written and performed with John Lennon on Lennon's album Walls and Bridges (1974), Lennon's last album of original songs before his six year hiatus. Other song collaborators include Lowell George, Van Dyke Parks and Ringo Starr. The title track "Harry" is performed by Eric Idle and Charlie Dore.

    Pandemonium Shadow Show (Awaiting Repress)

    180 Gram Pressed At RTI

    Mono

Nilsson's first true album, 1967's Pandemonium Shadow Show, is an astonishing collection that announces the artist's unique vaudevillian take on 1960s pop music-a style that brought him to the attention of the Beatles by way of their press agent Derek Taylor. Produced by Rick Jarrard (Jefferson Airplane, JosÉ Feliciano) and primarily arranged by George Tipton, the set strikes a balance between Harry's breathtaking originals (the autobiographical "1941," the melancholy "Without Her" and the playful "Ten Little Indians") and a tasteful array of covers (the Beatles' "You Can't Do That" and "She's Leaving Home," as well as Phil Spector's gargantuan "River DeepMountain High"), all the while showcasing the vocal prowess of the True One. Plus, the usual benefits of a vintage mono mix are here-a louder rhythm section, more present bass, and an overall sense of ensemble that stereo of the era could rarely capture. A stunning work, pressed at R.T.I., now available from Sundazed in a 180 gram edition with restored artwork.

Mastered From the Original Master Tapes Where Possible

This release includes all of Dolenz's original MGM singles, or 10 songs out of the 28 tracks he recorded while at MGM and its various affiliated imprints. Micky himself has participated in an exclusive interview for this project, which is included along with a 12-inch, 12-page booklet featuring newly-penned liner notes and never-before-published photos by legendary photographer and Southern California rock chronicler Henry Diltz. All of the recordings have been transferred from the original master tapes housed in the Universal vaults, except for two tracks where the original masters could no longer be located. These two tracks have been restored from original vinyl sources.

In its press release, 7A notes, ''These songs are an over looked part of Monkees history. They show Micky's versatility as a songwriter, a musician and also show just how a good his voice has always been!'' Among the tracks included is a rendition of ''Daybreak,'' written, arranged and conducted by Dolenz' pal Harry Nilsson; ''A Lover's Prayer'' written by Randy Newman; a medley of classic Buddy Holly tunes; and two sides (''Easy on You'' b/w ''Oh Someone'') with Peter Tork helping out on arrangements. Late Night Tales: Django Django

Django Django is the latest band invited to curate a prestigious Late Night Tales collection, set for release on 5th May. Like many of the best British groups, the Djangos met at art school, specifically Edinburgh College Of Art, before reconnecting in London. Django Django released their self-titled debut album on quirky French indie Because in early 2012 to some acclaim, winding up in many critics' end of year lists (Top Ten in the NME and Top 30 in Rolling Stone, among them).

Their oddball approach to music, which sounds like the rich harmonies of the Mamas & Papas beamed through a refracting prism pointing towards Bo Diddley, Chicago house and outer-space (it's no surprise to learn that Django producer/drummer Dave Maclean's brother John was in the Beta Band, who also shared the same cinemascopic view of the pop landscape).

"Rollicking sing-alongs, galloping into disco sunsets like whisky-addled and leather-saddled bandits on the stolen backs of prairie wild mustangs," is how Django Django describe themselves. Which is another way of saying they're pop adventurists, as at home with Mad Mike's Underground Resistance as they are the blues rumble of Canned Heat. A bit like this delightful mix, then, which darts about like a gurgle of guppies after two too many espressos.

Check out mixes that rock between two-step delights like Roy Davis Jr's 'Gabrielle' to Nilsson's lyrically winsome 'Coconut'. At one end of the Django spectrum there's James Last, the terminally unhip Teuton, whose 'Inner City Blues' shows you can never underestimate the Germans, while at the far reaches of the mix, they manage to sneak in Ramadanman ('Bass Drums') and Hudson Mohawke and Lunice collaboration TNGHT's 'Bugg'n'. You can hear the echoes of influences in some of the selections, like The Beach Boys whose peerless 'Surf's Up' makes a welcome appearance halfway through, while Seals & Crofts' "Sweet Green Fields" show what sun-drenched pop can sound like when it's done well. And because it's Late Night Tales there's a sparkling cover version of 'Porpoise Song', the theme from The Monkees daffily brilliant 'Head', an admirably lysergic termination to this waltz through pop's nooks and cranberries. "You should never be afraid to make a fool of yourself for art," Dave Maclean once said. Let's raise a dram to Scotland's favourite fools on the hill.

"We wanted to produce a mix that represented the band. It's what we're all into, so everyone put forward suggestions. It's what we are as a band; and we're kids that have grown up with an obsession about our mum and dad's record collections, like '50s and 60s stuff and then got into hip hop and dance music as we grew up. At the heart of it all is our parents' collections, with our tastes mixed in. Our Late Night Tales pays homage to that."

This Is The Town: A Tribute To Nilsson Vol 1

Pressed On Yellow Limited Edition Vinyl

This Is The Town: A Tribute to Nilsson (Volume One), is a 20-track collection that celebrates the artistry and songs of the legendary singer-songwriter Harry Nilsson. Produced by Kenny Siegal and recorded over the course of 2013 at Old Soul Studios in Catskill, NY, the album features a diverse gathering of young artists performing songs that span the breadth of Nilsson's repertoire, including "Early In The Morning" by Langhorne Slim, "Jump Into The Fire" by Low Cut Connie, "Are You Sleeping" by Marco Benevento, "Rainmaker" by Yellowbirds, "Think About Your Troubles" by Willy Mason and "Everybody's Talkin'" by Tracy Bonham. Harry's daughter Annie Nilsson contributes a rendition of "Gotta Get Up," along with the original illustrations that serve as the album's artwork.

"Each artist has taken a Nilsson song that meant something to them, and with passion and inspiration, transformed it into something that is both a fitting tribute, and entirely their own," Kenny Siegal explains. "In doing so, they are helping Harry Nilsson to be remembered as his songs live again through these new creative interpretations."

Harry Nilsson's son Zak Nilsson has endorsed This Is The Town, stating: "There is a huge breadth of talent here. So many of these songs grabbed me from the first phrase, like it kicks in and I'm just sitting here thinking, 'oh wow.' Some of them are just absolutely perfect. They are covers of Harry's songs, but they have a lot of those sort of signature Nilsson twists in them. The kind of versions only real fans of Harry's music could put together."

Conceived by Kenny Siegal as a two volume set, he is already at work recording the second edition to the tribute.

Magic Trick is Tim Cohen from the wonder-pop masters the Fresh & Onlys. To call Magic Trick a side, or even a solo project, would be in many ways both right and wrong, for what started as an exercise in music making has evolved, sprouted wings, and taken form as a super group of sorts. Tim, along with Alicia from Aisler's Set, Noelle Cahill, and James Kim bring Tim's vision to life. Ruler of the Night is filled with heart breaking glorious joy and haunting, other planetary sounds. Imagine Kate Bush working with Harry Nilsson and you'd get close to it, but this record would be better than that.

Life Fantastic is the much anticipated follow-up album to Rabbit Habits (2008), an album which inspired Paste magazine to proclaim of the band, They are what rock n roll is meant to be and, frankly, what most rock bands have forgotten altogether: these songs are fun. Working for the first time with producer Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes), Man Man have brought along the fierce energy of their renowned live shows while finding a new melodic voice on songs like Oh, La Brea with its Harry Nilsson music hall touches, or Life Fantastic loping along to a classic David Bowie piano vamp. Expanding their palette while keeping the found instruments, Man Man continue to evolve into an entirely new form of propulsive pop music.

Susan Cowsill and Vicki Peterson have been playing music apart and together for their entire lives. Susan was a child star with her family band, who were the real life template for The Partridge Family. Vicki of course is known as a member of The Bangles.

The two first performed as The Psycho Sisters in the early years of the last decade of the previous century. At that time, both were members, along with Peter Holsapple, of the much loved band The Continental Drifters.

After many years of friendship, the two decided to make a proper album. Up On the Chair, Beatrice features ten tunes of harmony, hooks and just a touch of New Orleans Hoodoo. Along with 8 original tunes, the album features their versions Peter Holsapple's What Do You Want From Me and Harry Nilsson's Cuddly Toy.

How To Die In The North

Lost treasure needn't be found in the distant past; the 21st century hides many artists who disappeared into the great wide yonder. BC Camplight is one such example. The alter-ego of American songwriter Brian Christinzio released albums in 2005 and 2007, both gems of a certain psych-pop vintage, combining eloquent songwriting with a self-destructive bent. Christinzio certainly knew it - he's described himself as, "the guy who blew it."

But this sublime talent with the keening vocal and fearless approach to lyrical introspection has another chance. His new album 'How To Die In The North', recorded in his newly adopted home of Manchester, England, is a fantastically rich, stylistically diverse trip. From dramatic, layered pop to a haunted take on Sixties sunshine-pop, from blue-eyed soul to speedy surf-pop, from sparser piano balladry to psychedelic showstoppers and a grand finale that's part Nilsson and part Broadway showtune.

Originally from New Jersey, Christinzio started playing piano aged just four, inspired by his mum's Jerry Lee Lewis and Nilsson records and his Dad's classical collection. Depression and crippling hypochondria clashed with captaining the football team and a penchant for boxing. Post-school, he fell in with people, "willing to go through shit to be a musician," which saw him relocate to Philadelphia where he occasionally played live with Philly faves The War On Drugs and guested on Sharon Van Etten's album 'Epic'.

He's already done two sessions for long-term fan Marc Riley at BBC 6 Music, which featured Christinzio's band of Mancunians who he met at The Castle Hotel pub, a watering hole in the city centre particularly popular with musicians. Christinzio also heard John Grant's album on the jukebox there, which encouraged him to approach Bella Union. Grant's cocktail of depression and self-sabotage thwarted an outrageous talent, but he took his second chance. The same deserves to happen to Christinzio, a similarly outsize, sharp and funny personality with a non-conformist streak. Far from dying, BC Camplight has been reborn in the North!

    Another One

Like the days of Steely Dan or Harry Nilsson releasing a classic album every year (or less) comes Mac DeMarco's Another One, a Mini-LP announced one year after the release of the meteorically successful Salad Days. Written and recorded during the downtime between a relentless touring schedule, Another One is an eight-track release that expands the arsenal of Mac's already impressive catalog, showing the maturity of Mac's progression as songwriter: it's a bit more refined, a bit more sophisticated, but nonetheless retains the guts and soul of classic Mac. Despite working at the same pace as artists like Creedence and The Rolling Stones, coupled with an equally unending schedule of touring and press, it's odd that Mac is labeled as a slacker. With two full-lengths and two EPs released and hundreds of sold out shows performed in the last several years, a recent late night television debut on Conan following a special performance on The Eric Andre Show, it seems, as Mac nears his 25th birthday, there's not a slack bone in the man's body. Great songwriters don't need to reinvent themselves; they just need to keep going and let the songs out in the world. Thus, here's Another One.

    Past Life

    Includes CD Of Full Album

When Lost In The Trees set out to record Past Life, their
third album for ANTI-, they knew they needed a break
with the past. On their first two releases Picker had used an
expanded six-member band to render his carefully composed,
classical-inflected songs. For the new album, the band is pared
to a lean electronic-rock four-piece; the arrangements are modern,
spare, minimal, emphasizing groove and rhythm, blending the sonic architecture of 21st century electronic dance music, and the sensual swerve
    of post-Bowie 80s pop.

The band made their next break with past practice by electing to work with
an outside producer for the first time. Nicolas Vernhes, whose credits include
breakthrough albums from Deerhunter, Dirty Projectors and Animal Collective, endorsed the band's new minimal aesthetic, and the
question in the studio became, "How much can we strip
away?" But fans that came to the band lured by the lush
classicism of All Alone In An Empty House and A Church That
Fits Our Needs (the Wall Street Journal's album of the year in 2012)
will not be disappointed. The haunting lyricism of Picker's voice and
melodies has not diminished in the new sparer approach, but instead rises
to the fore, bringing out that timeless quality of the melodies that is the common
ground of both folk and pop music. This pop quality, buried but always present
in previous efforts, shines on Past Life; not pop in any trivial, retro sense, but the
yearning lilt of Harry Nilsson or Mark Hollis, that floating melodicism that Relix
    found so "achingly beautiful."

During many months of 2011 and 2012 Deville have been stuck in the studio most of the time except for some European festivals and random shows. After two full length albums and a couple of hundred shows all around Europe the new record is a product of that. Trying to take this experience of what the band does best and what works live this new record is wider than previous releases... This brand new recording will see the light of day in 2013 via the band's new home here at Small Stone.

In 2009, after more than 100 gigs all over Europe since the debut album release it was time for the album ''Hail the Black Sky''. Recorded during the early months in 2009 in Malmoe, Sweden by Markus Nilsson and produced by Deville. The band has taken a step to a more straight forward songwriting and this album has more of an album feeling than the last one recording the songs during the same period of time. It follows the pattern of significant Deville grooves and 70`s driven riffing of the darker school. Eleven tracks of rock in the veins of Black Sabbath. Kyuss and Soundgarden it takes you to the next level of 70's rock for the 21st century. This album proves the bands progress to their own sound in the genre of heavy rock and beyond and will definitely take the listeners for a ride.

The Swedish rock band Deville released their full length debut ''Come Heavy Sleep'' in December 2007 on Buzzville Records with great reviews. Two European tours took place in Jan/Feb and Nov/Dec 2008 that went through seven countries. Heaviness and grooves dominates ''Come Heavy Sleep'' that stretches from stoner rock to doom riffs. In 2005/2006 Deville released a record on Daredevil Records a split record (double feature CD/ LP). It was also released in Europe and in the US. The band have existed around six years and have done over 200 gigs and festivals in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Lithuania, Portugal, Spain and the U.K the past five years with bands like Sepultura, Fu Manchu, Mustasch(S) and Brant Bjork.

    Strauss: Elektra (Speakers Corner)

Richard Strauss was filled with doubt as to whether he would be capable of expressing in music the crazed revenge of Elektra after writing his opera Salome with its shocking story. It is quite understandable that he had trouble in composing the work, although such difficulties are not in the least evident during the course of the drama or in the musical flow. Drawing on natural sources, the forceful melodies make use of polyphonic, complex motifs and extreme dissonances. Here and there, Strauss's typical chordal harmonies gleam through, though hardly audible, taking the harsh dissonances and chromaticism to the very extremes of atonality.

Sir Georg Solti, whose outstanding Strauss interpretations constitute the focus of his life's work, leads the enormous orchestra through the highly complex score and provides his singers with a powerful but finely chiselled sound. Birgit Nilsson personifies an icy-cold Elektra consumed with hatred, and her counterpart Regina Resnik as Clytemnestra is no less extreme in her role. Gerhard Stolze, one of the greatest singers of his time, masters the exhausting role of Aegistheus, and Tom Krause is highly convincing as the determined Orestes. The phenomenal acoustics of Vienna's Sofiensaal provided an ideal recording venue, and the audible quality of the sung text is excellent - although the final bloodbath can scarcely be expressed in words.

Recording: June, September and November 1966 at Sofiensaal, Vienna, by Gordon Parry and James Brown

Production: John Culshaw and Christopher Raeburn
