    This Weekend's The Night!

Epic, career-spanning live set from the Drive-By Truckers recorded in San Francisco last fall. Patterson Hood says:
"We sequenced it to be like kind of an ultimate DBT set list. We never use a set list from night to night so the show is
ever evolving, but for this it was like, what would be the ultimate three hour show we could play right now?"

    Drive All Night

The Drive All Night EP is anchored by Glen Hansard's compelling studio recording of the Bruce Springsteen classic, a live highlight of his 2012 tour with Eddie Vedder. Eddie rejoins Glen here to recreate the magic of their onstage performances, singing harmony vocals as Jake Clemons, nephew of the late great Clarence Clemons, plays saxophone. The whole track becomes a tribute to Springsteen and his musical and activist legacy: Hansard performed the song with Springsteen on stage in Ireland in what quickly became a viral YouTube hit with Hansard donating profits from the EP to Clarence Clemons' Little Kids Rock foundation. With three additional new Hansard originals, this EP will be a must have for fans of Glen Hansard and Eddie Vedder and the thousands of fans who saw their tour, along with Springsteen fans who have already embraced Glen's version online.

    Special Night

There are a few terms that get thrown around loosely, two of which are legend and retro-soul. One of these fits Lee Fields hand and glove, one of these doesn't fit at all. Very few people in music have both earned the status of legendary and continue to solidify it. 50 years in the game and only getting better, gaining more fans, and evolving his sound on each album, Lee is, in fact, a Living Legend. This brings us to the misuse of the term retro-soul when talking about Mr. Fields. You don't have to look far to find a younger generation emulating the essence and styles of an era they've only experienced through music and movies. It seems unfair to tag Lee with a term that implies imitation when he is part of the generation that actually defined the genre. Plain and simple, this is not that. Special Night is a master class in soul music past and present.

"I feel that every human being's purpose is to do what their inner voice says to do," says Lee Fields. "And my inner voice, my driving force, wants me to put out music and keeping making better records."

Produced by Leon Michels and Thomas Brenneck, and brilliantly performed by the Expressions, Special Night was written, recorded, mixed, and mastered entirely to tape in three weeks at the legendary Diamond Mine Studios in Queens, NY. A sense of urgency, equal parts fun and inspiration, and a decent amount of beer and Jack Daniels were the driving forces during the sessions that produced Lee Fields & The Expressions latest offering.

Special Night is also the first record in the Expressions catalogue in which every song was written jointly by Lee Fields and The Expressions. "When I record, I make every song like I actually mean it. I mean every word I say. On Special Night I'm talking to my lady - literally, expressing the way I feel." says Lee Fields. "You can tell if a song is real or not, and every moment I'm recording, those moments are real, this is a record about what people do in real life". For one example, he cites the song "Work to Do," which tells the story of "a guy going to counseling, drinking too much, apologizing to the old lady and trying to keep family together, doing the manly thing." On "Make This World", Lee makes a nod back to his early funk roots with a cautionary tale about the health of the planet. The world was designed to last indefinitely," says Fields. "We're the only living species on Earth who can alter that process. I'm hoping that song has a chain reaction, helps somebody put into action whatever contribution they can to change what the world is going through." As always, sticking to the formula but pushing the boundaries "Never Be Another You" from the first note doesn't sound like something you would hear on a Lee record, that is until he starts singing anyhow. A low-tempo ballad with a head nodding drum track, sparse piano lines, and all the space Lee needs to lay down what is sure to be one of the flyest love songs of 2017.

Whether tackling a tune about love lost, found, or broader topics like the state of humanity, Lee has a very unique and honest perspective that is on display with each unforgettable performance. Also, The Expressions have never been sharper, they, along with Lee, have created a collection of music on Special Night which holds court with pretty much any soul music that came before it

    Call By Night

Wymond Miles was raised in the working-class small towns of the American
West. On Call by Night, the singer's latest widescreen opus, Miles masterfully
evokes that lost landscape, all while grappling with issues of fatherhood, privacy,
PTSD, violence, and dissipated romance. The album adds a critical new chapter
to the Fresh & Onlys guitarist's story as an artist, and reasserts him as a major
    voice in contemporary songwriting.

Call by Night sees Miles building a noticeably bigger sound than on his previous
solo records, while simultaneously standing as his most intimate work. It's a
record explicitly written for the fidelity of the vinyl format, with louder songs
beginning each album side and quieter songs at the interior. His attention to
sequencing paid off; the album flows like a piece of classic cinema, and sounds
like it's splashed across a drive-in screen in 70mm. Recorded using vintage gear
by Phil Manley (The Fucking Champs, Trans Am) at El Studio in San Francisco
and Miles' Garden Chamber home studio, the record is a treasure of tube-amp
warmth, and a landmark in the songwriter's catalog.

Miles wrote most of Call by Night on piano, and while the wall-of-sound guitar
and cinematic synth playing that helped define his earlier efforts is still present,
the beating heart of the songs is left more open thanks to his new method. Where
previous full-lengths were cloaked in distinct aesthetic choices, this record exists
outside of any stylistic restraints. "Divided in Two," the lead single, considers
dignity, class, honor, and father-son relationships through the devastating lens of
PTSD, all set to a sardonic flag-waving waltz, with martial percussive bomb blasts.
The title track explores the enduring aesthetic of British psych-folk. Other songs
dip into the traditions of gospel music, sea shanties, and even big-box power
ballads, using antique instruments and Miles' unique perspective on the modern
world to forge a new collection of entries for the American songbook.

Miles has said the songs on Call by Night mark his "more definitive commitment
to seek, listen, and give voice to an enduring muse." If that's true, then the muse
has obviously been singing to him loud and clear.

    Dark Night Of The Soul

This musical DNA has been in Jimbo Mathus since birth. His father and relatives
were all skilled musicians who filled the house with old folk, country and blues
tunes. By the age of eight, Mathus was joining them on mandolin and by his
teenage years had learned guitar and piano. High school led to playing in punk
and new wave bands, the most notable being Johnny Vomit and the Dry Heaves
and The End, with future Oblivian Jack Yarber. Post high school, Mathus studied
Philosophy at Mississippi State University before leaving to travel around
America. In doing so he worked various jobs, including an influential stint as
a barge tankerman on the mighty Mississippi River. Settling in Chapel Hill,
N.C., he drummed in the cult rock band Metal Flake Mother prior to starting
the Squirrel Nut Zippers. This ahead-of-its-time retro roots band scored a hit
with "Hot" and performed at President Clinton's second Inauguration and the
1996 Summer Olympics. Following the Zippers' split, Mathus worked with such
noted artists such as Buddy Guy and Elvis Costello, and collaborated with North
Mississippi Allstars guitarist Luther Dickinson and Alvin Youngblood Hart in the
South Memphis String Band. He also recorded his own albums (including one
dedicated to his childhood nanny Rosetta Patton, the daughter of Delta blues
    icon Charley Patton).

On most of 'Dark Night's' tracks, Mathus' acoustic guitar is surrounded by
the electric guitar played by his longtime sideman Matt Pierce and pal Eric
"Roscoe" Ambel. (Ambel produced 'White Buffalo' but on 'Dark Night' he focuses
exclusively on his righteous guitar playing.) The album's raw, rock sound arose
from the fact that most of the tracks were recorded live in the studio with
Mathus' band, the Tri-State Coalition, which he found "very liberating way of
doing it." Mathus feels very in synch with his bandmates (keyboardist Eric
Carlton, drummer Ryan Rogers, guitarist Pierce and guest bassist and Drive By
Trucker Matt Patton) since they have played together now for several years.
"The intensity you're hearing on this album," he proclaims, "is the spirit of a
band that is put ting it's shit on the line ."

They Only Come Out At Night

Mastered from the Original Epic Records Tapes by Joe Reagoso and Kevin Gray

Edgar Winter, the multi-talented superstar brother of blues rock legend Johnny Winter, has been a fixture on the rock music scene now for several decades. While launching his own successful career with his solo albums and Edgar Winters White Trash, the natural progression for this man was to develop his own supergroup which would become the platinum and gold selling The Edgar Winter Group.

Releasing their first album in 1973, They Only Come Out At Night was an overnight success, thanks to the mind altering studio jam Frankenstein which has since become one of classic rocks finest moments. This instrumental smash featured the stunning keyboard of Edgar Winter, the incredible guitar of resident shredder Ronnie Montrose, the thumping bass of the late great Dan Hartman and of course the solid percussive hits of Chuck Ruff.

The album went onto receive more attention from radio programmers across the globe as even further hit songs would rapidly develop including the blues rocker Undercover Man, the country rock feel of Round & Round and of course another top charter with the summer Top 40 Rock driving sounds of Dan Hartmans Free Ride. The Rick Derringer produced album would go on to stay on the charts for a long time and receive multiple platinum status in a very short time. Truly, one of classic rocks finest albums ever recorded!

Now for the first time ever on audiophile vinyl, Friday Music announces the first installment of their Edgar Winter 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series with his platinum plus album They Only Come Out At Night. This first time audiophile vinyl release is mastered from the original Epic Records tapes by Joe Reagoso (Johnny Winter/Alice Cooper/Boston) at Friday Music Studios with Kevin Gray and pressed at RTI.

For this special release, the limited edition album comes in the original gatefold album cover, which features the photography of Francesco Scavullo and Norman Seeff and artwork design of John Berg. To keep your album in impeccable condition, they are also including a poly lined sleeve to protect your vinyl investment as well as a poly bag for the classic album cover art.

Give Me The Night (Pure Pleasure)

This is the peak of George Benson's courtship of the mass market -- a superbly crafted and performed pop album with a large supporting cast -- and wouldn't you know that Quincy Jones, the master catalyst, is the producer. Q's regular team, including the prolific songwriter Rod Temperton and the brilliant engineer Bruce Swedien, is in control, and Benson's voice, caught beautifully in the rich, floating sound, had never before been put to such versatile use. On Moody's Mood, Benson really exercises his vocalese chops and proves that he is technically as fluid as just about any jazz vocalist, and he become a credible rival to Al Jarreau on the joyous title track. Benson's guitar now plays a subsidiary role -- only two of the ten tracks are instrumentals -- but Q has him play terrific fills behind the vocals and in the gaps, and the engineering gives his tone a variety of striking, new, full-sounding timbres. The instrumentals themselves are marvelous: Off Broadway is driving and danceable, and Ivan Lins' Dinorah, Dinorah grows increasingly seductive with each play. Benson should have worked with Jones from this point on, but this would be their only album together.

    Musicians:

    • George Benson (vocal, guitar)
    • Lee Ritenour (guitar)
    • Herbie Hancock (electric piano, synthesizer)
    • Kim Hutchcroft (saxophone, flute)
    • Jerry Hey (trumpet)
    • Abraham Laboriel (bass)
    • Paulinho Da Costa (percussion)
    • Carlos Vega (drums)

    Recording: 1980 by Bruce Swedien
    Production: Quincy Jones

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Catch 22: Keasbey Nights

Keasby Nights is the first full length album by Catch 22. The record is powered by a three piece horn section who can lay down smooth harmonies over a rhythm section that can turn stylistic directions on a dime. Shifting from hard hitting punk complete with machine gun fills and driving rhythms, to the up-beat sounds of early jump-style swing and ragtime influenced dance music. This unique blend of sounds and influence brings to the band's music the edginess of punk combined with the catchy vocal melodies and danceable rhythms of swing and ska.

San Francisco's The Drift create music that Tortoise should have made. Taking their name to heart, The Drift do just that - from ambient noise and elegant guitar rock to mournful jazz ballads and stunted, down-tempo hip-hop - all with the subtle grace that's to be expected from veterans of the sound. Existing somewhere between Miles Davis's In A Silent Way and Tarentel's From Bone To Satellite, The Drift compose predestined soundtracks for everyday life - not only perfect for a night on the beach, but just as suitable for the long drive getting there. Their music is inescapably passionate, executed with just enough wide-eyed improvisation to sound eternally fresh.

"Madi Diaz Writes The Most Danceable Break Up Record Ever" - LA Weekly

"We have to say, this change does her good" - Refinery29

"With infectious structure and an addicting nature, Phantom should quickly find
its way into an already powerfully, lady-driven indie pop movement, ready to kick
down the doors of every local scene" - High Voltage

Indie-pop siren, Madi Diaz's new album Phantom is an open-faced and undeniably honest chronicle of falling
down, getting back up, and heading to the horizon.

Phantom was recorded in Madi's newly adopted home of Los Angeles, produced by Nick Ruth (Mikky Ekko,
Active Child) and mixed by John O'Mahony (Coldplay, Metric, Oh Land) at NYC's famed Electric Lady Studios.
The album's 11 tracks expand upon Madi's brand of sophisticated indie pop songs, providing a soundtrack
for adventurous escapades on sweaty dance floors with old friends or late night introspective drives under a
canopy of stars. Underneath the effervescent pop, her lyrics reveal an emotional through line.

    Noctilucence

Noctilucence is a new 12 recorded between in 2013 and 2014 between Los Angeles, California,
and Cleveland, Ohio. The term "noctilucence" comes from "noctilucent clouds", the name
given to clouds which, for some reason, emit a brilliant vibrance at night. On this recording
we find our subject diving into the electric waters of the night sky, in long drives across the
vast deserts of America. It's a recording about the discovery and understanding of the shadow,
entrance to the realm not controlled by the light of day, or the logic of reason. It's about
confronting nocturnal terrors and all of those things that go bump in the night.
Understanding that the ancient archetypes which watch over us don't flinch, and stand firm
across the spell of time. On Along The Way we sought the Macrobes for guidance, and on
Noctilucence we see them taking real shape. Opening with a mantra to the perpetual
regeneration of the spirit of love, crying out for new levels of confidence and consciousness to
emerge from the human race, Noctilucence is a deep stare into the infinite eye of the
shimmering night sky of the future, and all it holds in its gaze.

    The Reckoning

The Reckoning is the follow-up to the South Carolina foursome's acclaimed 2009 album The Outsiders, which debuted in the Top 20 of the Billboard Top 200. The River

Ranked 253/500 On Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time

Mastered By Bob Ludwig Working Under The Supervision Of Springsteen & Engineer Toby Scott

The River is the fifth studio album, and the first double album by Bruce Springsteen.

The sources of The River go back into earlier parts of Springsteen's recording career. Independence Day, Point Blank, The Ties That Bind, Ramrod, and Sherry Darling were leftovers from his previous album, Darkness on the Edge of Town, and had been featured on the 1978 tour, as had parts of Drive All Night as a long interpolation within Backstreets. The River had premiered at the September 1979 Musicians United for Safe Energy concerts, gaining a featured spot in the subsequent documentary No Nukes.

Originally, Springsteen intended The River to be a single set entitled The Ties That Bind and released in late 1979 with 10 tracks. Springsteen added darker material after he'd written the title track. Indeed, The River became noted for its mix of the frivolous next to the solemn. This was intentional, and in contrast to Darkness, for as Springsteen said during an interview, Rock and roll has always been this joy, this certain happiness that is in its way the most beautiful thing in life. But rock is also about hardness and coldness and being alone ... I finally got to the place where I realized life had paradoxes, a lot of them, and you've got to live with them.

    No

Three years after their previous album, Haust are back with their most raw and primitive release to date: In nine short tracks the listener is pulled back into a time where rock'n'roll and punk were synonymous with rawness and vulnerability. On NO, Haust are also enforced by vocals from Dark Times' Ann Kristin Traaen on the title track and Into the Night. Full of new ideas and drive, NO was created in two short weeks full of arguing, distrust and rehearsal.

The music industry sees artists come and go on a regular basis. Plans change, life gets in the way and bands fade away. Occasionally we're lucky enough to see an important band return from their silence: enter At The Drive In. While At The Drive In was quiet, the members (Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, Cedric Bixler-Zavala, Tony Hajjar and Paul Hinojos) were incredibly busy, selling millions of albums, winning Grammys and putting out a lot of quality music with their other projects (The Mars Volta, Antemasque, Gone Is Gone and many more).

After a 15 year break, the band returned to the studio to create the follow-up to 2000's Relationship of Command. It's the moment fans have been waiting for since their return to the stage as 2012 Coachella and Lollapalooza headliners prepare for in·ter a·li·a. Produced by the band's own Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Rich Costey (Muse, Sigur Rós, Santigold), in·ter a·li·a includes eleven songs that resonate the classic At The Drive In intensity that fans love, while breaking the band's 15-year drought with something fresh and exciting, that slides right into 2017.

Their impressive catalog has earned At The Drive In positions on the Billboard Top 200 chart, spots on various "Greatest Albums" lists, and performances on David Letterman, Jools Holland, Conan O'Brien and more. This album is sure to provide nothing less. The band will be touring throughout 2017 to support this release, as well as perform on late night television. The silence is finally broken resume transmission.

    Golden Skies

It speaks volumes for how long we've been waiting for the debut Brainfeeder album from Mono/Poly that when Flying Lotus first got in touch with him about doing something for the label, it was via Myspace. The wait, though, has been worth it. Specializing in a kind of beat-driven cosmic soundscape which he describes as "electronic-classical-alchemy music," Mono/Poly aka Charles Dickerson has drawn on the lessons he's learned from collaborating on last year's Thundercat album as well as the Flash Bang Grenada hip hop project with Busdriver and Nocando, and made a beautifully realized, endlessly expansive record.

From the first orchestral trills of "Winds of Change" you know you're in for something special. As the track builds the listener notices not only the content but also the production chops - this is a record which sounds exactly as big, glossy and up front as its creator wants it to. Rebekah Raff adds scintillating harp work to "Transit to the Gold Planet," but it's the way Dickerson integrates it and builds on it which is really special. "Ra Rise" sounds like sunbathing in space, Niki Randa's abstracted topline vocal warming you right through. Title track, "Golden Skies" uses a looping piano riff reminiscent of Bach, Thelonious Monk and Wu Tang on E, all at once, without sounding like any of them. Add sternum- thrumming bass to that and you know exactly what's what. "Alpha & Omega" does something clever with slowed down d&b licks and tweaked vocal snips. "Empyrean" features Mendee Ichikawa (of the band Free Moral Agents), an ethereal, ghostly presence. "Night Garden" sounds like a drive through the dark streets of an alternate LA. "Euphoria" uses a simple, military-style snare and then twines keyboard lines over it until it's lifted into the sky. Thundercat joins in on last track, "Gamma," and adds some perfectly-judged low-end riffing to anchor Dickerson's keyboard swirls.

Mono/Poly has been a name to watch since his debut, The George Machine, back in 2009. His 2011 EP release for Brainfeeder, Manifestations, was supported by artists as diverse as Radiohead and Erykah Badu and his work on Thundercat's Apocalypse established once and for all the quality of his productions. With Golden Skies he has laid down a marker to any other "beat maker" out there. Because with a genuine producer with this much talent, everyone else needs to aim a little bit higher - up towards the golden skies.

    Youth

On their first full-length, Wild Cub sound much more experienced than one would expect a band that has been together just under a year to, as the duo officially came together last November. But a quick peek at their collective resume quickly explains that away: Nashville music veteran Jeremy Bullock has worked with the likes of Madi Diaz and Pico vs. Island Trees, while Keegan DeWitt previously scored films in addition to his solo career. The album also sounds startlingly more hi-fi than a record put together in the makeshift studio in Bullock's home would suggest, but on Youth, that is what the pair does best-defy expectation.

In 13 songs, Wild Cub creates infectious, intricate electro-pop that blends '80s beats with electronics and synths worthy of the aughts. Some songs have a slight New Wave tinge around the edges, while others have infinitely catchy guitars lurking in the background that, for some reason, conjure slight U2 comparisons. Paired with the deep melancholy and soulfulness of DeWitts' voice, the album is full of small complexities that fill songs as they unwittingly slide into each other, creating a perfect soundtrack for driving late on summer nights.

The songs on Youth often feature bright guitars over more repetitive electronics, incorporating the slightest of world influences with simple riffs, adding a flavor rarely heard on such ostensible pop albums, with "Thunder Clatter" and "Jonti" falling into this vein. Youth is also diversified by a handful of songs that are carried by his deep soothing voice, with the simpler, rhythmic music almost fading from consciousness, as in "The Water" and "Straight No Turns."

    I Blame You

Brooklyn, NY's Obits is made up of Rick Froberg, Sohrab Habibion, Greg Simpson, and Scott Gursky. They released their first single, One Cross Apiece b/w Put It in Writing in December of '08 on their own Stint Records label and did some touring with the Constantines and The Night Marchers. Produced by G. Sanoff, E. Janney and Obits, I Blame You is the band's debut full-length album.

We're not into innovation as a band, says Froberg, who's already done his fair share of innovating with Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes. I think innovation is overrated and an overestimated quality. Anything that's going to be original is going to happen without your control. Things that make your band sound like you, are things you wouldn't be able to change anyway. We just go ahead and play the stuff we like, and we don't worry about originality per se, because that takes care of itself.

    Rain Crow

"With a deep, come-hither voice" (Mother Jones) and an "ability to turn that throbbing, thumping uh-uhh hazy guitar beat" (PopMatters), the "King of Swamp Rock" Tony Joe White will release his 19th studio album, Rain Crow, on Yep Roc Records. Recorded at his own studio and produced by his son, Jody White, Rain Crow summons recollections of long ago, when animals foretold the weather, tongue-talking worshippers proved their faith by handling snakes and a "bad wind" could drive a man to edge of insanity.

The nine-song set features new compositions White wrote over the past three years, including co-writes with his wife, Leann, and Billy Bob Thornton on "The Middle of Nowhere." Known for popularizing swamp music, he wrote gems like "Polk Salad Annie" and "Rainy Night in Georgia," and has had his songs performed by Elvis, Ray Charles, and Tina Turner.
