    The electro-powered grooves of the writing-production team the Neptunes have abetted fine-to-great tracks by everyone from Jay-Z and Ol' Dirty Bastard to Britney Spears. On their debut as performers, they display an irresistible knack for hooky tracks rooted in the eclectic listening habits they developed while growing up in the multiracial Virginia Beach, Virginia, neighborhoods they still call home. Fusing album rock and rap more forcefully and convincingly than Kid Rock or Durst-style aggro bands (the latter of whom they seem to lampoon on Rock Star), N.E.R.D. whip up a creamy yet slammin' mix. Main men Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo coax apropos guest shots from Kelis (the get-your-freak-on Truth or Dare, the sexiest thing here aside from the mÉnage-a-wow plea Tape You) and a handful of up-and-coming members. The live instrumentation that replaces the machine-tooled tracks of an earlier import version of In Search Of retains the tunes' syncopation while rendering it palatable for less eclectic rock fans. While not a commercial blockbuster on the order of many of their clients' discs, this venture is nonetheless one of 2002's standout releases. - Rickey Wright

    Forget, for a moment, "Free Bird." Consider, instead, the authentic down-home rowdiness, distinctive first-person narratives, searing triple-guitar front, gritty vocals, and bluesy boogie bluster. And the undeniable youthful hunger pumping through the subtly witty songs, all strongly rooted in Southern heritage and working-class values. Independent of the most-requested tune in history, Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd bleeds red, white, and blue and encapsulates the wondrous dichotomies of Southern rock.


    Half-speed mastered from the original master tapes and pressed on 180g LP at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's vinyl edition of the Floridian group's ground-shaking debut is the equivalent of having access to the band's amplifiers and producer Al Kooper's control boards in the studio. Affording palpable spaciousness to each of the instruments, expanding the dynamic range, and clearing away previous tonal congestion, this version presents the septet's raw, honest tunes in the most direct, hard-hitting sound they've ever enjoyed. It lays waste to all prior reissues-none of which on LP went back to the master tapes.


    Months before Lynyrd Skynyrd enjoyed the privilege of recording its debut, the band entered its seventh year of playing juke joints and assorted dives in a bootstraps effort to land a deal. During a residency at a hardscrabble Georgian club, the group's rambunctious rock, swaggering attitude, blue-collar determination, and country-reared cadence caught the ear of producer/musician Al Kooper. The rest is history. Kooper inked the ensemble to his new imprint and hustled everyone into a Georgia studio for sessions that occurred March through April 1973.


    It's at the Studio One space that Lynyrd Skynyrd flashed scampering tempos, cutting give-and-take riffs, loose barroom lines, and off-the-cuff vocalese that entirely separated its approach from that of the more jazz-styled affairs of the Allman Brothers Band. Confederate flags, empty whiskey bottles, cocked pistols, rotgut habits, scorned women, and prodigal drifters populate the songs, nearly all written from first-person perspectives that add to their genuineness. Prophetic touches-twinkling piano notes, soaring mellotrons, a one-off harmonica-provide ideal complements to the intertwined guitar melodies and singer Ronnie Van Zant's comfortable gruffness and way of expressing local customs.


    Whether it's the them's-fightin'-words edginess of the humorous albeit entirely believable Southern-etched yarn "Gimme Three Steps," which sails on a triple mast of six-string exchanges and clicks heels to a trotting percussive beat that doubles as the sound of cowboy-boot heels, or the spiritual pleas and lived-in wisdom echoed on the barbed-wire balladry of "Simple Man," Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd burns with forthright and freewheeling desire, rebellious and sincere earnestness. Seen from either a lyrical, musical, or performance perspective, there's not a wasted second or awkward moment to be found.


    Then, of course, there's the sugary drip of Van Zant's political ragtime-referencing affair "Things Goin' On," bluegrass-tinted swing of "Mississippi Kid," and swampy get-go of "Poison Whiskey." They all lead up to the epic "Free Bird," a greasy slide-guitar anthem that no matter how many times it's played or requested in jest, never loses its power to grip the listener's emotions like an iron vice. What a record.

    Tookah

    Tookah is Emiliana Torrini's fourth album and it follows 2008's critically acclaimed Me And Armini. It sees Emiliana back in the studio with her long-time producer/collaborator Dan Carey.


    'Tookah' was written at different stages over a 3 year period, the oldest song being "When Fever Breaks" which was written having come off a tough two year tour which took it's toll in many ways.


    "The only way to deal with things is to go into the studio and do music, it is like brain scrambling. You come out of the session clearer as you get to step out of yourself take a look and deal with it."


    Other songs like 'Autumn Sun' were written in Iceland.


    "We had done that before, gone on a week's writing trip to Iceland, wrote five songs in that week which all made it onto ´Me and Armini´. We were kind of expecting the same to happen. It didn´t. We only wrote 'Autumn Sun'. It was extremely frustrating. Lyrics were hard to write for this album and I spent day and night trying to finish it - with Dan standing over me in military mode. The only time in my life I did not like him much."


    On the airplane we realized Dan had left his computer at the airport - it had the only copy of the song. He ran out to find it and just made it back just before the doors closed. We had a terrifying landing that almost ended badly. We grabbed each other and the only thing we said was "Nooo the song! It will be lost forever!"


    This record was my sound journey. I had not long had my baby and was getting my head around this huge love I had for him and then being absolutely devastated that I might have dragged him out of a world where he was wild and free, riding horses, swimming in rivers and eating over open fires, to this world where the bad is too much to handle. I had a new identity to figure out and the record was the tiger in the rowing boat. It was going nowhere. I did not like the music we were doing because we had done it before. We knew how to craft that. I needed a challenge, proof that something in me had shifted and it had to be musically as well. I was driving myself too hard.


    Dan told me I was not ready to make a record, that I should forget about it for a while, just hang out.


    So, we started hanging out, in the studio. In my head the difference was we were not making a record. I discovered the Oberheim on Youtube and that changed everything. That and the Swarmatron Dan had bought. We knew we would plaster it all over the record before we knew what the record was.


    I pulled some friends together I was writing with Simon Byrt, ("Blood Red", "Elísabet"), Ian kellett (´Elísabet) and Matt Robertson who are real synth nerds and we started playing around and having fun. We went to Dan´s and jammed and started doing some synth symphonies.


    After you have a baby there comes a time where you need to go out with your girlfriends and dance. I went to the studio with Dan and did a dance track "Speed of Dark." We danced. It had to be on the record it was a part of the journey. From that the sound of the record was born, it was a challenge bringing it all together.


    The sound was worked very visually. There are almost two stories to each song there is the lyrical visual and then there is a whole different visual that comes with the instrumental and that is how the sound was often directed. "Home" is a very good example of how the sound was built from a visual. When we were writing it, it was clear it had to have a very certain feeling. ´I wanted it to have the visual of you standing in snow blinding white, watching your breath in the cold, not feeling the cold. You look to your left and a lake stretches out frozen and huge. You walk over it to the other side into a forest, you lose direction. Completely lost and helpless. Fireworks start lighting up the sky and you feel a wave of relief. You walk towards them. In the king blue sky they start changing into jelly fish in neon flashing colours, leading the way to home.´ We did not stop until we saw that when playing it.


    'Tookah' is a made up word. It came when I was improvising and I connected with that word or name in a very deep blissful way. It is the core of you. The 'you' you were when you were born, before life decorated you like a Christmas tree with all the baggage. It is what connects us with everyone and everything.


    It is what the sufis spin for, what we are looking for all our lives. It is the sudden thankfulness you feel when doing nothing in particular, where everything is gently perfect for a moment. God has many names. I call mine 'Tookah'.

    Blues of Desperation

    GRAMMY-nominated blues-rock guitar icon Joe Bonamassa announces his 20160solo album, Blues of Desperation (J&R Adventures). Like his previous solo disc, 2014's Top 10 Billboard hit Different Shades of Blue, this record features all-original material, and it sees the maverick superstar guitarist, singer and songwriter tossing away the rule book as he continues to reinvent and redefine the blues-rock genre like no other artist working today.


    I want people to hear my evolution as a blues-rock musician, says Bonamassa, somebody who isn't resting on accomplishments and who is always pushing forward and thinking about how music can evolve and stay relevant.


    The writing sessions for Blues of Desperation took Bonamassa back to Nashville, where he'd composed Different Shades of Blue, to work with some of Music City's top tunesmiths, people like James House, Tom Hambridge, Jeffrey Steele, Jerry Flowers and Gary Nicholson.


    These are some of the best guys in the business, Bonamassa raves. Lyrically, you'll hear the proverbial trains, mountains, valleys and other blues references about heartbreak and loneliness but there are also some poignant moments about getting away from the stressful, crazy demands of life and losing yourself with your special someone. I think anybody will be able to relate.


    Bonamassa and his longtime producer Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Journey) convened at Nashville's Grand Victor Sound Studios (formerly known as RCA Studio A), and during an intense, five-day period they recorded 11 galvanizing songs with a crack group of musicians including drummers Anton Fig and Greg Morrow, bassist Michael Rhodes, keyboardist Reese Wynans, horn players Lee Thornburg, Paulie Cerra and Mark Douthit, and background singers Mahalia Barnes, Jade McRae and Juanita Tippins.


    Of his decade-long collaboration with Shirley, Bonamassa says, I can explain our relationship with one word - 'trust.' I completely trust in Kevin and his musical promptings. He pushes my musical ability by challenging me to not just rest on my laurels or settle for 'good.' He expects more out of the other musicians as well and will not hold back when he sees us falling back into our usual routine.


    Which sometimes calls for unorthodox measures, says Shirley, who admits that his idea of augmenting Bonamassa's usual recording band with second drummer Morrow was engineered to ruffle Joe's feathers.


    I wanted him to work a little harder, like in his early years, he says, so I brought in an additional drummer, just to throw the cat amongst the pigeons. Of the results, Shirley raves, Recording 'Blues of Desperation' is one of the most exciting recording projects I've done. What a joyful noise we made!


    Blues of Desperation is Bonamassa's most powerfully diverse and boldly realized album yet, with the material ranging from the gutsy, gritty blues call to arms of This Train (Joe's guitar is set to rude throughout) to the elegant yet emotionally shattering ballad What I've Known for a Very Long Time to the soul-nourishing, acoustic-based Americana of The Valley Runs Low, on which Bonamassa's voice rises up majestically to meet Barnes, McRae and Tippins in gospel-like rapture. And then there's the bleary, tequila-soaked Drive, dripping with the kind of raw, wicked and unsettling sensuality that could make David Lynch green with envy.


    Throughout the record, Bonamassa's epic guitar playing conjures up stirring benedictions and explosive exorcisms of sound. No Good Place For the Lonely features some of the guitarist's most cauterizing licks yet, and the walloping title track is a white-knuckled, six-string thrill ride guaranteed to jolt the senses. Guitar fans everywhere (like those who recently voted Bonamassa Best Blues Guitarist in Guitar World magazine by an overwhelming margin) will consider Blues of Desperation a treasure trove of axe riches.


    There are some long solos on this record and even some mini-jams in the middle of a track where the band would just jive and crank it out, he says. [During those jams], we do a tip of the hat to Beck and Clapton from the '70s. I think guitar nerds and music fans like myself will love it.

    The Violent Sleep of Reason, the band's eighth full-length studio album, finds MESHUGGAH building upon their legacy for fearless metal sculpting within the context of extreme metal, but also recapturing some of the magic and excitement specifically within the aspect of performance, finding flow and groove that would be a challenge for any lesser band to locate, given such technical geometric madness at mischievous hand.


    "There's a distinct methodology", says drummer, writer and spokesman for the band Tomas Haake, that was put into motion to help the band achieve the level of "intensity" the attentive fan will feel as he/she makes their way through The Violent Sleep of Reason.


    For this one, it's all live takes, with either 3 or 4 of the band members recording their respective instruments simultaneously - which is a way of recording they haven't used in many years. And that definitely goes against the stream of what you see in most technical metal nowadays, where editing, drum programming, the use of "beat detectives" etc. is a way more common approach to recording. So on this one, MESHUGGAH went back towards a more old-school approach, properly rehearsing the songs as a whole band before going into studio to record them. Jens was in one room, guitarists were in one room, bass player Dick was sitting right next to the drum set with an amplifier/cab in the next room. So in that sense this is more "old school"; the methodology is in that sense more like what bands were doing in the '80s and 90s. "And that vibrancy comes out", says Haake; "it's a very audible difference, sloppier sounding if you will, but at the same time it brings a different energy than the last few albums - this is "less perfect", but in that sense, also more alive."


    The personal challenge taken on by the band produced fortunate byproducts as well, or, rather, it inspired them to "de-machine" other aspects of the technical MESHUGGAH juggernaut.


    "Yes, for this one we also changed our approach toward the guitar recording/sounds," explains Haake, who nonetheless confirms that the band is still using eight-string axes, and for the most part, tuning down half a step to achieve that torrid MESHUGGAH guitar grunt. "The last few albums have been mostly digital, guitar sounds-wise, using all digital guitar gear as opposed to analog tube amps and regular cabs. The upside of using all digital like we did previous, is you can re-amp it afterwards, as it's basically a clean signal so you can pick, choose, and tweak things at a later point. But with this album, it was six speakers, all separately miked in one (super-loud) room, each cabinet with a different head -Marshall, Orange, Mesa Boogie etc-and then mixing it up a little bit depending on the song. If there was a song that was a little slower and sludgier, we might add more of the Orange amp to get a tad more of that stoner sound. And if it's a bit more metal, we'd maybe use the Marshall head or the Mesa head a little more in the mix. So we did have the opportunity, to mix and match for each song so the guitar sound is not exactly the same for every song. And that's a difference from Koloss and obZen, for example, where pretty much every song had the same drum and guitar sound."


    But the end result is still a relentless onslaught of MESHUGGAH -patented ideas, save for one gorgeous and atmospheric respite, at the close of "Stifled."


    Framing the pacing and contours of record, Tomas says, "None of the songs stick out quite like, for example, the way "Bleed" did on obZen. To me, it doesn't really have hits-it just has really cool songs! Not that we ever really had "hits" though (laughs). They're just maybe a little "wilder" sounding on this album, much due also to the live recording approach. Dick and I wrote about half of the material, and the rest was either me and Mårten working together or Mårten writing on his own. We were kind of going for something nuts as is the case with all our writing/recording albums - We wanted to hear something that we hadn't heard ourselves do before." Fredrik was not part of the songwriting for this one, as he's been hard at work on his next solo album, but as always he was still very involved with every aspect of the recording, from recording rhythm guitars, guitar solos etc . "And that's also a completely new thing," continues Tomas. "Dick was never involved in the songwriting prior to this album, whereas Fredrik always was. And that, of course, creates a difference in the way the album as a whole came out."


    At the lyrical end, highlights include the title track, which, set to a massively heavy arch-djent rhythm, speaks of "the violent outcome of not dealing with what is going on, the violent implications of being asleep. "The title is actually inspired by a Goya painting called 'The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters.'"


    A second highlight is strident opener and longest song on the album, "Clockworks," which is strafed by a typically super-human drum performance from Haake. "That's more about looking to yourself and who you are and things you want to change about yourself. And then in the context of how your mind works, as a clockwork. It's the idea of taking out all the little pins, wheels, and springs and kind of rebuilding it to make you function in a different fashion. So lyrics for that song is a look in on self, at things that you wish that you could change about yourself."


    Listen to tracks like the vertigo-inducing "Nostrum" and the slower if equally circular and note-dense "By the Ton," and it's easy to understand why it's been four years since a MESHUGGAH album. But mind-numbing complexity of the material is not the only reason, explains Haake.


    "No, well, I would say first of all, it takes us a lot of time to write. And we're very bad at focusing; we're very bad at multitasking. I don't think we ever wrote one single riff on a tour bus or in a hotel room. So if you have a touring cycle of two, two-and-a-half, three years, there's not going to be anything written in that time period. And that's just how we all function. We need to have a break, like, okay, time out now-nothing else for a year. We need to write for one year. But you also want to tour as much as possible for an album. Koloss, for example, we toured for like two-and-a-half years. And then you write. And when we do finally write, we scrutinize those songs, riffs, structures over and over and over, and change things as we go. So in a lot of the songs, maybe only one riff was actually there originally. So writing for us does take a long time, no doubt."


    As a result, the band's erudite and intelligent fan base "get something that they don't really hear in any other bands". On the first album you still hear a lot of Metallica and Anthrax and Bay Area kind of thrash metal influence. "We knew that we sounded a bit like that, but we were aiming for something we hadn't heard in any other band. And that's still the main fuel. We're not trying to write your average metal song. We're not trying to write catchy songs. We're not trying to write hit songs (laughs). We're just trying to write something that is cool, that we haven't heard before, and hopefully our fans haven't heard before. And that also gets harder and harder though, because by now, there are so many awesome musicians and bands and so much great music out there. But it would seem like the followers that we do have, the people that have kept buying our albums and stayed with us for a lot of years, are not necessarily the typical metal fans. The crowd we have is diverse. We have a lot of geeks and nerds and weirdos, and they are beautiful ones, you know? We have a lot of people with talent, and a lot of people that are also interested in music as art, and not just an event."


    But it's not lost on Tomas that MESHUGGAH is making daunting progressive music, music where melody is subservient to jackhammer rhythm, as evidenced by the way that even his lead singer, Jens Kidman, is situated within the maelstrom that is MESHUGGAH


    "He's the perfect tool for the job. Just like most people, we all, of course, like music where there's "proper singing", and we all love a great singer. Personally, I think the voice is the most empathic instrument. You hear someone sing and you're like, oh my God, that's the coolest instrument in the world. But at the same time, what we're trying to do is not that. Just like the guitars and me as a drummer, Jens also is a rhythmic tool, one that adds aggression, as well as words to back up that aggression if you will."


    So would Tomas then acquiesce to the idea of MESHUGGAH as metal's reigning enemies of melody?


    "In a sense, yeah. I mean, there is definitely melody and a lot of melodic thought put into tonalities, harmonies between bass and guitars and things like that, but at the same time, we're not often going for anything pretty. Sometimes there's a little bit, where we go, 'Awww, that's beautiful," but then we usually immediately mess it up again. You give it a little bit of something "nice" sometimes, but basically we're not going for niceness (laughs)."

    Lynyrd Skynyrd were performing in the UK in late 1975, on a tour promoting their third studio record, Nuthin' Fancy. The band were coming off two hugely successful albums, their debut, Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd and 1974's Second Helping. This show features Lynyrd Skynyrd in an environment where they felt comfortable and were at the top of their game. With the exception of the Allman Brothers, most southern rock bands had stayed away from the U.K. during this period because the country's music scene was so wrapped up in glam, pub-rock and the emerging punk scene. But that didn't scare Skynyrd, who confidently played their brand of riff-driving southern fried rock boogie to crowds around the British Isles.

    DJ Koze - with his friendly and sometimes slightly melancholic take on the world - is one of the greatest auteurs of club music today, and one of the few internationally active DJs who dares to make music that has relevance beyond the dance floor. During the 70-minute journey on his DJ Kicks - the 50th edition - Kosi Kos manages to establish a uniform color even though genres alternate in a way that is rarely heard on a mix CD: the stripped down hip hop of Madlib, brutalist Berghain techno, timeless songwriting, floating indie-pop and outlier numbers that oscillate between absurdity and melancholy. Koze's disregard for the stylistic yoke presents him with an immense challenge. Hence, almost all the tracks are more or less edited, and one is fully rhymed (Session Victim: Hyuwee).Koze rambles on here himself: I didn't want to kick around sophisticated knowledge, but rather try and weave together some good gems that would make sense to anyone, even people who aren't necessarily music nerds. But this is blabbing that you can count on, also because he approaches the term mix from a different angle and doesn't even try to make something fit that doesn't fit: During the day, I don't need to hear anything that's mixed on the beat. I put the focus on making sure that it works harmoniously - the idea is more to create the impression of a radio show, like people such as John Peel did so uniquely. There is a giant cosmos of music and it runs through my filter.

    What would American southern rock be without the scorching sounds of Lynyrd Skynyrd? Analogue Productions and Quality Record Pressings have already brought you exceptional reissues of Second Helping and Nuthin' Fancy. Back to the well then, we go, for two more Skynyrd favorites - the epic Gimme Back My Bullets and the band's bluesy, hard-rocking 1973 debut Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd.


    This 1976 Tom Dowd-produced classic, Gimme Back My Bullets, the fourth studio album from the legendary southern rock band, features the original line-up of Ronnie Van Zant on vocals, lead guitar great Gary Rossington, Allen Collins on guitar, Leon Wilkerson on bass, Billy Powell on piano, and Artemus Pyle on the drums.


    Other records from the late, great, and original Lynyrd Skynyrd were more barroom raw (Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd), indelibly rocking (Second Helping), and radio-ready (Street Survivors), but none was as endearing and cohesive as Gimme Back My Bullets). The 1976 LP, whose title referred not to ammunition, but to the Billboard term 'No. 1 with a bullet,' found the normally three-fisted Florida guitar army one axe short.


    But it allowed Gary Rossington and Allen Collins to work more intuitively on the songwriting chores with vocalist Ronnie Van Zant, while providing room to groove in the process. The results, though underrated in the band's epic pre-crash catalog, sweep into rock ('Trust,' 'Searching'), blues ('I Got the Same Old Blues'), folk ('Every Mother's Son'), and country ('All I Can Do Is Write About It'). - Amazon

    The new School Of Language album is called Old Fears and it's set for release on Memphis Industries on 7 April 2014. Old Fears. It's a pop record. A place of clipped falsetto, melancholic funk, iridescent electro, shimmering post-punk, futurist prog. A self-contained sphere of strange sensations. Beguiling textures. Lengthening shadows. At times it is both liminal and minimal, at others emotive and external. Ambiguous and ambient. Tantalising and tempered. Modern. Unique. And funny too. "I wrote a lot of notes and they seemed to distinctly split into things to do with love and things to do with fear," says David Brewis. "A lot of it has ended up with me looking back at when I was 19, 20 - my formative years. So though I wouldn't want to call it a concept album it's definitely themed." Old Fears. Here each song has been honed and polished into something pure, like a vast block of marble chiselled down into a perfectly tiny delicate egg of FabergÉ-esque perfection. Recorded throughout 2013 in Field Music's studio on the banks of the River Wear in Sunderland, synth flourishes sit alongside the staccato jarring guitars of 'A Smile Cracks' and the metronomic rhythms of 'Dress Up'. Like a Ballard novel or a George Shaw painting, 'Between The Suburbs' offers perhaps the most lyrical and poetic moment, where "Dogs chase patterns, play to attention / Bulbs glare on greasy roads...". The title track meanwhile is reminiscent of the haunting giallo film scores of Goblin or kosmische music at its most moving while 'Moment Of Doubt' displays shades of Brian Eno and Robert Wyatt. Other oblique influences come in the form of early Justin Timberlake and N*E*R*D albums, "a bunch of disco records", Canadian experimentalist Sandro Perri, Dr John, Fela Kuti and Shalamar. Old Fears. A haunted collection that occupies a strange, hazy hinterland of permanent gloaming. One where snatched melodies pass each one another like cars gliding by at night on their way back to the silent suburbs. These are polished pieces composed without contrivance. Old Fears. An album that is neither retrogressive or futurist, but simply anchored in the moment. Pure. By beautiful album closer 'You Kept Yourself' one is left with the sensation of seeing, smelling and tasting the world anew.
