Ranked 226/500 On Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time

Mastered By Bob Ludwig Working Under The Supervision Of Springsteen & Engineer Toby Scott

Sparsely-recorded on a cassette-tape Portastudio, the tracks on Nebraska were originally intended as demos of songs to be recorded with the E Street Band. However, Springsteen ultimately decided to release the demos himself. Nebraska remains one of the most highly regarded albums in his catalogue. The songs on Nebraska both deal with ordinary, blue collar characters who face a challenge or a turning point in their lives, but also outsiders, criminals and mass murderers, who have little hope for the future - or no future at all, as in the title track, where the main character is sentenced to death in the electric chair. Unlike his previous albums, very little salvation and grace is present within the songs. The album's uncompromising sound and mood, combined with its dark lyrical content has been described by a music critic as one of the most challenging albums ever released by a major star on a major record label.

    Gretchen Goes To Nebraska

An intelligent blend of melodic and heavy rock, Gretchen Goes to Nebraska is arguably King's X's finest album. It's more exciting than the followup Faith Hope Love, with the heavy opener Out of the Silent Planet (C.S. Lewis fans take note), and the hard rock Fall On Me and Over My Head (a single from the album). There are ballads as well, such as the beautiful Summerland. The inclusion of the organ, the sitar, and the dulcimer in the arsenal of instruments adds a nice touch. Heavy metal fans may grow impatient with this one, but fans of melody-oriented progressive rock will definitely want to check it out. --Genevieve Williams

    Kids In The Street

Kids In The Street is the 7th and latest album from American roots troubadour, Justin Townes Earle. After marrying, moving to various corners of the country and continuous touring with both full band and solo, Earle made time to reflect on the past few years and find new clarity. With Kids In The Street, he made a conscious decision to work with a producer for the first time in his now decade-long career. Earle made the trip to Omaha, Nebraska to work with Mike Mogis (First Aid Kit, M.Ward, Connor Oberst) at ARC Studios. Together, they handpicked musicians to create a new sound and environment for the songs that speaks to Justin's roots, musically and personally. This creative collaboration, paired with Justin's longtime guitarist Paul Niehaus, has resulted in an album that takes a big step forward.

    Upside Down Mountain

Though only 34, Conor Oberst has been a recording artist for more than two decades, starting with raw, acoustic guitar-based bedroom tracks he cut as a young teenager and initially released on cassette. After his early Omaha-based band Commander Venus broke up, Oberst recast himself as Bright Eyes, an umbrella name for Oberst, producer-keyboardist Mike Mogis and multi-instrumentalist/arranger Nathaniel Wolcott, and a shifting group of collaborators. By the time he released Lifted or The Story is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground on Saddle Creek, the label he helped found with friends in Omaha, Oberst was a word-of-mouth success, with an avid young audience that helped to sell out his tours. The critics soon followed. Rolling Stone called him "a true American original: the ghost of Walt Whitman setting up shop in the wraith-white, rail-thin frame of an acoustic-strumming Nebraska Cure fan." The 2005 simultaneous release of two markedly different Bright Eyes albums-the more singer-songwriter-oriented I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning and the darker, computerized Digital Ash in a Digital Urn-displayed the breadth of his talent. Time Magazine listed I'm Wide Awake among its top 10 albums of the year. Since then, Bright Eyes has continued to evolve, its lineup morphing with each successive tour. While supporting his 2007 Cassadaga album, Oberst took over New York City's Town Hall for a week of sold-out shows, with his large, string-augmented ensemble outfitted spectacularly in white suits. He's also recorded and toured with Mogis, Jim James, and M. Ward as Monsters of Folk as well as with his own Mystic Valley Band. For the first leg of his summer 2014 tour, he's bringing along Wilson's other pals, the Southern Californian quartet Dawes as his support act and backing band.

"I feel lucky that I have been able to do this for as longs as I have," declares Oberst. "I've seen so many talented friends come and go, for a lot of different reasons. Sometimes they stop making music because they can't pay the bills or they lose the passion for it. At this point it is my life. I don't know another way to live. There is something fundamental in myself; I have to be this way. It completes what I am."

Upside Down Mountain features many other friends of Oberst's, including producer Jonathan Wilson, engineer Andy LeMaster, bassist Macey Taylor, multi-instrumentalist Blake Mills, and the Swedish sibling folk-rock vocal duo First Aid Kit. What started as exploratory demos with producer-musician Jonathan Wilson at his Fivestar Studios in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, in a home Wilson rents from Oberst, became the first de facto album sessions. Returning to his native Omaha, Nebraska, Oberst kept rolling with the help of frequent collaborator, engineer, and friend Andy LeMaster at his own ARC Studios. Even more tracking followed in Omaha last November and December. Then Oberst and Wilson moved south to Blackbird Studio in Nashville.

"This is a return to an earlier way I wrote," Oberst says of the songs on Upside Down Mountain. "It's more intimate or personal, if you will. Even if all my songs come from the same place, you make different aesthetic decisions along the way. For me, language is a huge part of why I make music. I'm not the greatest guitar player or piano player-I'm not the greatest singer, either-but I feel if I can come up with melodies I like that are fused with poetry I'm proud of, then that's what I bring to the table. That's why I'm able to do this."

"Last Thursday, at the Harvard Square theatre, I saw my rock'n'roll past flash before my eyes. And I saw something else: I saw rock and roll future and its name is Bruce Springsteen. And on a night when I needed to feel young, he made me feel like I was hearing music for the very first time." --Jon Landau, The Real Paper, May 22, 1974

On 2009's Mama, I'm Swollen, Cursive's first studio album in nearly three years, the revered Omaha-based indie-rock act follows up the acclaimed Happy Hollow with another arresting outing. Mama, I'm Swollen expands on the full sound of Happy Hollow, setting up a wide sonic expanse that's fitting for a band from the open plains of Nebraska. As always, Cursive is a showcase for frontman Tim Kasher's emotive singing and fierce guitar playing, as best evinced on the dynamic From the Hips, which builds to a feverish crescendo. Room Temperature

Recorded in the winter of 1992 in Nebraska, with two microphones and a cassette four-track recorder. Despite being his second full-length, this was Joyner's first fully realized album, the one that first caught the interest of British DJ John Peel, who played it so often, he single-handedly created a European audience for the Midwest singer-songwriter. Populated with sometimes harrowing and desperate stories of the complex workings of the human heart (in conflict with itself), the stark record features Joyner solo on all tracks. This marks the influential album's first appearance on vinyl.

The People's Key is Bright Eyes' seventh studio album and eagerly awaited follow-up to 2007âs acclaimed Cassadaga. Since 2006 the once revolving cast of Bright Eyes players has settled around permanent members Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis and Nate Walcott, with additional musicians joining them in the studio and on tour.

Fully realized and bursting with charisma, The People's Key is an assured and accomplished album, artfully arranged and filled with the engaging and mesmeric songwriting for which Oberst is renowned. Recorded in Omaha, Nebraska, at the bandâs own ARC Studios, The People's Key was produced by Mike Mogis and engineered by Mogis and Andy LeMaster.

Ten songs written by Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes), a boy from Nebraska, and performed/recorded with assistance from members of Cursive, Drip, Lullaby for the Working Class, Neutral Milk Hotel, of Montreal, Sorry About Dresden, and more. For those familiar with the work of Bright Eyes, this new record represents a big step forward in terms of fidelity, much in part to the guidance and assistance throughout the recordings by Lullaby's Mike Mogis. For those not familiar with the Bright Eyes sound, this album will serve as a perfect introduction to this chaotic bedroom pop.

One Jug Of Wine, Two Vessels

The collaboration One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels is the fruit of a long-time musical appreciation between Bright Eyes and Neva Dinova. Featuring four new songs in addition to six from the original 2004 Crank! Records release, One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels is less of a split and more of a bonafide collaboration. Dividing the songwriting duties, the original tracks were recorded by Conor Oberst and Jake Bellows in basements of houses on quiet, leafy streets in Omaha in the fall of 2003. Those tracks were mixed and tweaked by famed producer-in-residence Mike Mogis at his Presto! Studios in Lincoln, Nebraska. The groups reconvened in the fall of 2009 to write and record four new tracks at Mogis's renowned ARC Studios in Omaha for the reissue.

    The Execution Of All Things

The Execution of All Things is the second full length album released by Los Angeles-based indie pop band Rilo Kiley. Expanding on their previous musical sound that mostly incorporated guitars, vocals, percussion and pianos, Execution contains heavy electronica sampling mixed into the songs in a rather unusual and displaced-sounding way. Also, unlike their previous tracks which were written in very traditional manners, the lyrics to the songs on Execution are very wordy and read like prose. Musically, the record has a very sunny disposition, with bouncing bass lines and simple melodies complemented by Lewis' vocal style, but the upbeat music is generally counterpointed by the often dark and morose subject matter that the lyrics reference. The album was recorded at Saddle Creek Records in Omaha, Nebraska, and the aforementioned features show the influence of that studio's associated Omaha Sound.

UUVVWWZ is an avant-blues quartet from Lincoln Nebraska, comprised of Teal Gardner, Jim Schroeder, Dustin Wilbourn, and David Ozinga. They have been playing as UU for five years and have put out one album previously, a self-titled record that was screech-cronky, clubbier, and babier than our current work, the trusted language.

They took two years to write this album, and in the trusted language they aspire to braid music theory with experimental poetry, which functions as a conduit toward a schizo-cultural critique and embodied project. From their previous record to the trusted language listeners will note a development, a shift resulting in an exceedingly unified perspective that is more acutely political and cohesive sounding.

    Born In The U.S.A.

Ranked 86/500 On Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time

Mastered By Bob Ludwig Working Under The Supervision Of Springsteen & Engineer Toby Scott

Born in the U.S.A. is the seventh studio album by American rock singer-songwriter Bruce Springsteen. A critical and commercial success, it found Springsteen marking a departure in his sound. While its predecessor, the dark and acoustic Nebraska, featured songs of pessimism and isolation, Born in the U.S.A.'s lyrics expressed signs of hope in the daily fight of the ordinary American in following the American Dream, a new feeling complemented by synthesized arrangements and a pop-flavored, radio-oriented sound that helped Springsteen to extend his popularity and appeal to mainstream audiences.

"A clever mix of electronically influenced genres that's as current as it is addictive." - Interview

Electronic pop trio Icky Blossoms release their second album, Mask. Three years on from their Dave Sitek (TV on the Radio) produced debut, their singular brand of
mesmerizingly contradictory dance music has evolved. Blending avant-garde elements with catchy and danceable
pop, threaded within dark, bass-heavy atmospheres, their songs nod to great music of the past, whilst rmly
    propelling them into the future.

Hailing from Omaha, Nebraska, the three members of Icky Blossoms-Sarah Bohling (vocals/synth), Nik Fackler (lead
guitar/vocals) and Derek Pressnall (guitar/vocals-also of Tilly and the Wall)-wrote independently and then ltered
songs back and forth through each other, creating a collage of tastes, genres and energies within each track. The
band experimented with making electronics sound organic and organic instruments feel electronic. Song skeletons
were embellished with tuned 808s, hyper-e ected mouth noises, screams as instruments, and guitars run through
    synthesizers.

With the talent of longtime friend and collaborator Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, Julian Casablancas, Man Man,
First Aid Kit) at ARC Studios in Omaha, Nebraska, these songs became fully realized. Along with Mogis, the
contributions of assistant engineer Ben Brodin (Conor Oberst band), bassist Graham Ulicny (Reptar), drummer Daniel
Ocanto (Big Harp) and Todd Fink (The Faint) helped the vision come into focus.

Mask  nds the band capitalizing on the spontaneity of their live experience and the ambitions of their writing and
recording process, while not losing their sense of self. Their in uences range from Fad Gadget to Beyonce and the
subject matter varies from wrestling with the isolation of existence to the emotional spectrum of love. The album
pulses with a vibrant sound that's electric, con dent, and new.

Let Me Come Home (Discontinued) (On Sale)

Broken Records' second album Let Me Come Home started out as a series of sketches and song fragments in frontman Jamie Sutherlands kitchen, later taking form in demo sessions at an old distillery grain store in the Scottish Highlands. The follow-up to 2009's Until The Earth Begins To Part, the album was recorded and produced by Tony Doogan (Mogwai, Delgados, Belle & Sebastian) at his Studio in Glasgow.

An idea started to form about the direction of the new record based on several films and albums that I became gradually obsessed with at that time. Watching the widescreen emptiness of films Badlands, Rumble Fish and East Of Eden, as well as records such as Bruce Springsteens Nebraska, Nick Caves Murder Ballads, Calexicos Feast Of Wire, and REMs early back catalogue all became a strong influence on the direction of the new songs. It was also during this time that the lyrical theme of the record started to take shape, thinking about what was going on around me in the form of fears and concerns over making relationships work, and a need for security. - Jamie Sutherland

Back in print with new artwork, and an extra disc of music previously unreleased on vinyl

Damien Jurado is the sort of songwriter who straddles rock's past and future, and with each
record contributes a new chapter to a never-fruitful body ofwork. Before we move onto the next
chapter, we look back at his first album with Secretly Canadian. An instant classic when released
in 2003, Where Shall You Take Me? was his fifth full-length, and is a beautiful collection of ten
Raymond Carver-esque vignettes terror and bliss in Middle America. Arriving two decades after
Springsteen's Nebraska,Jurado put the darker, more complicated side of the heartland back on
the map with his tales of young love (some requited; some not), innocent fun and bloodshed.
Mostly acoustic with very sparse band arrangements - with the notable exception being the old
live favorite Texas to Ohio, which sounds like a Scarecrow-era Mellencamp hit - Jurado
displayed the songwriting talent that turns back the hands of time to a place in which his tunes
sound like they've been floating around, passed down from generation to generation.

Celebrating the 10th anniversary of this fine release comes a deluxe 2xLP vinyl reissue,
incorporating unreleased basement reel demos, and the Just In Time For Something EP (never

Dead Man's Town: A Tribute To Springsteen's Born In The U.S.A.

2014 marks the 30th anniversary of Bruce Springsteen's 'Born In The U.S.A.'
Although it would become his biggest selling album with seven top 10 singles
on the Billboard Hot 100, Luther Dickinson of North Mississippi Allstars
says "any of those songs could be played with acoustic guitar alone and
still be great." Taking this idea as its premise, 'Dead Man's Town: A Tribute to
Born in the U.S.A' strips the album's twelve indelible originals to the core, with
contributions from Jason Isbell & Amanda Shires, Low, Nicole Atkins, Justin
Townes Earle, Blitzen Trapper, Joe Pug, Trampled by Turtles, and more. Rolling Stone premiered Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires' Dave Cobb-produced
cover of "Born In The U.S.A," saying these artists are "reimagining 'Born in
the U.S.A.'... with a reduced approach more influenced by that of the acoustic
    'Nebraska.

Isbell says of his cover, ""Born In The U.S.A." is one of my favorites
because so many people have seemingly misunderstood the lyrical content
and the song's overall tone. When you listen to the demo, the dark, minor key
arrangement makes it clear that this is not strictly a song of celebration.
We wanted to stay true to that version." Amanda Shires adds, "I love that
the song paints a picture of struggle in the face of the American dream, and
the irony in the chorus is delivered with such force that it nearly
    transcends irony altogether."

    The Embers Of Time

A talent to outrank Ryan Adams or Conor Oberst - Uncut

He's found a way to encapsulate all the dichotomies of life and make them work within the confines of a three-minute pop song. - Popmatters

"It's my surreal expat therapy record," observes Josh Rouse about his new LP, The Embers of Time. A career peak, The Embers of Time takes inspiration from his self-admitted crisis of confidence and bouts with existential psychotherapy in his adopted home of Valencia, Spain.

The 10-song collection of originals contains some of Rouse's most beautiful arrangements and complex songwriting to date. First song and lead single "Some Days I'm Golden All Night" channels Glen Campbell-style Countrypolitan pop mastery through 'Self Portrait'-era Dylan confessional lyrics.

Rouse has been called "one of contemporary music's most engaging singer-songwriters" (NPR) as well as "a talent to outrank Ryan Adams or Conor Oberst" (Uncut), and with The Embers of Time he opens a new chapter in his lauded career. He split time recording the album between Valencia and Nashville, and enlisted Brad Jones (Justin Townes Earle) as producer. The record moves from the hushed twang of "Time," where Josh recalls a stepfather who died too young and muses about his own mortality, to the deceptively sunny album closer "Crystal Falls," which recounts a rare period of solace from his itinerant childhood. "In Crystal Falls I made a few good friends," he sings. "It was just another stop. I never saw them again."

Originally hailing from rural Nebraska, Rouse has carved out a distinguished career as a top-tier musician. His last record, 'The Happiness Waltz' earned unanimous praise, with AllMusic calling it "absolutely beautiful, like 10cc producing Al Green."

    Provincial (Out Of Stock)

Since 1997, John K. Samson has written four acclaimed albums with The Weakerthans. Provincial, Samsons first solo release began with a simple idea: to explore four different roads in Manitoba, the Canadian province where Samson lives. They're the places I kept going back to. Samson talked to relatives, friends and strangers; he visited archives, a tuberculosis sanatorium turned RV park and a forgotten cemetery.

The result is this collection of evocative songs, an album that fits beside Bruce Springsteens Nebraska, Sun Kil Moons Ghosts Of The Great Highway and Mountain Goats Tallahassee. While the teenage craving of Cruise Night recalls the Cars' Stop Error and invokes Bach; for When I Write my Masters Thesis, Samsons inspiration was all jukebox serendipity, Bob Dylans When I Paint My Masterpiece, sailing out from the corner of a Yukon dive-bar. Provincial is a record full of fierce, tuneful and vivid stories.
