    The Nat King Cole Story

Analogue Productions' Blue Note and Nat King Cole Reissues WIN A Positive Feedback 2010 Brutus Award!
...if you haven't picked up every one of the Blue Note and Nat King Cole reissues from Chad Kassem and company at Acoustic Sounds, you're really missing out! - David W. Robinson, Positive Feedback, Issue 52

The results on this five 45rpm 180g LP set are simply astonishing, particularly if you've heard the originals. The transparency, dynamics and three-dimensionality create the intense sensation of being in the studio with the musicians and especially with Cole who appears as a visceral, floating apparition between the speakers. The size and three-dimensionality of the vocal image produces the sensation of the listener being a 'fly on the microphone mike stand' listening to Cole perform, surrounded by musicians. The arrangements and performances are faithful to the originals but the sound of course is far superior. The feeling is of sitting in on history by being there, not merely eavesdropping after the fact. Music = 10/11; Sound = 11/11 - Michael Fremer, Musicangle

...mastered from the original three-track work tapes is a sonic spectacular that outdoes the original by a wide margin - as does its packaging. The SACD includes three-channel and two-channel mixes. A major reissue. Stereophile Records To Die For - Michael Fremer, Stereophile, February 2010

One of Nat King Cole's crowning achievements and a fittingly lavish celebration of a cultural and musical icon, The Nat King Cole Story offers a glorious overview of the career of one of the greatest and most beloved performers in popular music history. 38 tracks, many re-recorded in stereo for this anthology, offer a selection spanning his popular career.

His beginnings leading the popular jazz-oriented Nat King Cole Trio are represented with selections including Route 66 and I Love You (For Sentimental Reasons). Hits including Nature Boy, Mona Lisa, Unforgettable, Orange Colored Sky, Night Lights and Looking Back are here to represent his unparalleled string of memorable hits as a popular vocalist. Calypso Blues and Ay Cosita Linda help illustrate the range his projects could cover. More contemporary to this anthology, selections including Wild Is Love are augmented here with two huge hits as a special bonus, Ramblin' Rose and Those Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer to further expand the scope.

A talent and voice for all times with a body of work that could and did help define their eras, Nat King Cole's career offers some of the finest, most enduring and treasured recordings ever made. Nat King Cole could never be fully served by any one set. But this wonderful cornucopia stands as a fantastic celebration for the enthusiast and a good starting point for someone just beginning to explore The Nat King Cole Story.

Using the original first generation 2-track and 3-track session tapes from Capitol's vaults and all-analogue systems including custom headstacks, 3-track preview heads, console and monitoring chain installed at AcousTech specially for these releases, mastering engineers Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman realize the stunning beauty of these recordings in this 45-RPM 180-gram five album set.

Originally presented as a deluxe box set of 3 LPs in a canvas-bound embossed box with essays and pictures included in a album-sized booklet, The Nat King Cole Story was a prestigious release Capitol took obvious pride in. Complete with 5 LPs, canvas-bound embossed box and booklet with essays and pictures, Analogue Productions proudly recreates the experience for a new generation to cherish with this deluxe release. This truly is a no-expenses-spared project, resulting in the ultimate version of this title and a historic reissue.

Three more songs - Sweet Lorraine, It's Only A Paper Moon and (Get Your Kicks On) Route 66 - are songs that appear on After Midnight, however these versions are stereo re-recordings of the original arrangements from the 1940s.

    Where Did Everyone Go?

In what some consider his last great album prior to his tragic passing, Nat King Cole approached the dramatic dark side of love in the spirit of Sinatra's saloon songs to timeless, haunting effect with the album Where Did Everyone Go? The distinctive orchestrations of Gordon Jenkins for strings accompany the intimately expressive and supremely musical voice of the incomparable Nat King Cole in such classic songs as Someone To Tell It To, I Keep Going Back To Joe's, Spring Is Here, The End Of A Love Affair and other reflections of one who had and now has not. Nat King Cole and arranger Gordon Jenkins followed their hit albums Love Is The Thing and The Very Thought Of You with this striking shift toward the dramatic. The result again stands among its era's finest, most stylistically defining recordings of popular music and still retains its grand sense of tragedy and beauty.

Using the original first generation 3-track session tapes from Capitol's vaults and all-analogue systems including custom headstacks, 3-track preview heads, console and monitoring chain installed at AcousTech specially for these releases, mastering engineers Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman realize the stunning beauty of these recordings. Two bonus tracks recorded for the album, A Farewell to Arms and Happy New Year, are included in this double 45-RPM 180-gram album set for their first release in original production quality. Included with this deluxe reissue is a striking six-panel booklet complete with rare photos, a 3,200-word essay by Chris Hall on the album and a 1,200-word essay by Michael Fremer about the remastering process. This truly is a no-expenses-spared project, resulting in the ultimate version of this title and a historic reissue.

    Penthouse Serenade (Pure Pleasure)

The year after he had formally disbanded his trio to turn his attention to vocal pop music, Nat 'King' Cole reversed himself and went into the studio with guitarist John Collins, bassist Charlie Harris, and drummer Bunny Shawker and recorded the eight-song 10 LP Penthouse Serenade, a quiet, reflective set of standards like Somebody Loves Me and Laura that he performed instrumentally at the piano. The album confirmed that, whatever success he might be having as a singer, he hadn't lost his touch. In 1955, with the 12 LP gaining dominance, Cole went back into the studio with Collins, Harris, and drummer Lee Young (Lester Young's brother) and cut four more songs to create a 12-track reissue of Penthouse Serenade that was his first full-length LP release. In 1998, Capitol Jazz again expanded the album, putting out a 19-track CD version by appending an alternate take of I Surrender Dear from the 1955 session and six tracks recorded with Collins and Harris (and, on most of them, percussionist Jack Costanzo) from January 1952, four of which were previously unreleased. The justification for these inclusions was that they featured the same personnel, and they are interesting in that they include alternate, non-orchestrated versions of Cole hits like Too Young, Walkin' My Baby Back Home, and Unforgettable. But they are not in keeping with the rest of the album in that they are vocal tracks. Nevertheless, it's hard to argue with an album that, over the years, has grown from 23 to 51 minutes in length.

    Musicians:

    • Nat King Cole (piano, vocal)

    • John Collins (guitar)

    • Charlie Harris (bass)

    • Bunny Shawker, Lee Young (drums)

    • Jack Costanzo (percussion)

Recording: January 1952 at MGM Studios, New York City / July 1952 and July 1955 at Capitol Studios, Los Angeles

    Production: Lee Gillette

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    St. Louis Blues

Included with this deluxe reissue is a striking six-panel booklet complete with rare photos, a 1,600-word essay by Jordan Taylor on the album and a 1,200-word essay by Michael Fremer about the remastering process. This truly is a no-expenses-spared project, resulting in the ultimate version of this title.

An influential figure in the early 20th century development of blues and popular music as a music scholar and as the composer of numerous popular songs, W.C. Handy has often been called the Father of the Blues. When two of the finest and most popular of mid-20th century musical figures, jazz and popular music icon Nat King Cole and style setting arranger extraordinare Nelson Riddle undertook an album dedicated to the music of W.C. Handy, the results were at once a worthy tribute and transformative. Particularly smooth vocals by Nat King Cole were aptly backed by resourceful orchestrations from Nelson Riddle. From the landmark laments of St. Louis Blues and the loving appreciation of Morning Star on through to the colloquial rag of Joe Turner's Blues, the varied facets of W.C. Handy's songs were given a lastingly freshened interpretation. Along with the contemporary Louis Armstrong Plays W.C. Handy (also available here at Acoustic Sounds), this album is considered by many to be the best anthology of the music of W.C. Handy.

Using the original first generation 3-track session tapes from Capitol's vaults and all-analogue systems including custom headstacks, 3-track preview heads, console and monitoring chain installed at AcousTech specially for these releases, mastering engineers Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman realize the rich beauty of these recordings in this double 45-RPM 180-gram album set. Featuring top shelf interpretations of These Foolish Things, Who's Sorry Now? After Midnight

Once Nat King Cole gave up playing piano on a regular basis and instead focused on a series of easy listening vocal albums, jazz fans longed for him to return to his first love. These 1956 studio sessions made up Cole's last jazz-oriented disc, where he played piano and sang on every number, joined by several guest soloists. Cole's vocals are impeccable and swinging, while his piano alternates between providing subdued backgrounds and light solos that don't reveal his true potential on the instrument. Willie Smith's smooth alto sax buoys the singer in the brisk take of Just You, Just Me. Harry Sweets Edison's muted trumpet complements the leader in his interpretation of Sweet Lorraine. Composer Juan Tizol's valve trombone and former Cole sideman Jack Costanzo's bongos add just the right touch to the brisk take of Caravan. Stuff Smith's humorous, unusually understated violin is a nice touch in When I Grow Too Old to Dream. It's hard for any Nat King Cole fan to ignore these important sessions. [The original version of this release featured a dozen tracks, later expanded to 17 in the '80s with the discovery of some unreleased material. Yet another track, the alternate take of You're Looking at Me, was also found and added to reissues beginning in the late '90s.]

    Unforgettable

Emerging as a great pop vocal stylist in 1954, Nat King Cole enjoyed a string of hit singles and albums thereon, but Unforgettable is perhaps the singer at his early peak. With romance as the watchword, Cole slides through some of his most familiar ballads, include the title selection, Portrait of Jennie, Mona Lisa, and I Love You (For Sentimental Reasons). There are quite a few lesser known, but attractive songs, plus a small handful of standards (What'll I Do? is a keeper) that round out this interesting collection. The very artistic, near surreal three-dimensional white, charcoal black, and royal blue-hued front cover may be the best part of this reissue, as it reflects a time period defined by its simplicity and yet its increasingly technological, superimposed modernity.

Mastered fully analogue from the original first-generation full-track monaural session tapes by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray to 45-RPM 180-gram vinyl, the exemplary recording is presented in appropriately exquisite sound quality.

    After Midnight (Pure Pleasure)

Nat 'King' Cole's music is the perfect combination of romantic charm and musical invention. Cole is renowned for his big production numbers and pop hits such as Stardust, but he was also an accomplished and unique jazz pianist and excelled in a small-group setting. After Midnight's album cover states that this is a 'trio' release. However, Cole is actually paired up with his trio plus five guest soloists (saxophone, trombone, trumpet, percussion, and violin). The dubious credits don't matter much though. This is precious music and, without a doubt, one of Cole's best records. Included here are wonderful and intimate renditions of Cole favorites Sweet Lorraine, (Get Your Kicks on) Route 66, and many others. Trombonist Juan Tizol performs a beautiful version of his Afro-Cuban tune Caravan, and Cole and violinist Stuff Smith trade some hot licks on the up-tempo I Know That You Know. For anybody looking to understand the depth and breadth of Cole's jazz roots, this disc is an excellent point of departure.

    Musicians:

    • Willie Smith (alto saxophone)

    • Harry 'Sweets' Edison (trumpet)

    • John Collins (guitar)

    • Charlie Harris (bass)

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

Early in his career Motown legend Marvin Gaye had wanted to be a crooner and his primary idol in this field was Nat
King Cole. So it's only natural that he would pay tribute to him on this covers album midway through his early 60's

Think music ain't what it used to be? Then you haven't heard Nick Waterhouse. His jumped-up take on 1950's rhythm 'n' blues is the real deal."
    - GQ

A timeless talent for spirited rock and rhythms that anyone can appreciate.
He draws from the classic sound of '50's American pop with a distinctive
voice of his own, shouting and growling with infectious vigor."
    - NPR

    Waterhouse is definitely a star."
    - LA TIMES

The music sounds like a party in full swing, each instrument playing exactly what is needed."
    - CHICAGO TRIBUNE

Between the chattering keys, bomping saxes, gorgeous guitar tones and
the bandleader's voice-which slides effortlessly from cool quaver to feral
howl - the end result is undeniable."
    - SPIN

Nick Waterhouse's art springs from a simple idea: everybody wants to be sombody else. One of his heroes, Van Morrison, got his start covering Bobby
Bland, whose own musical idol was Nat "King" Cole. In Waterhouse's view,
emulation is a journey; you never truly succeed, but as the singer, guitarist and songwriter puts it, "You become something on the way there."

Nick was born in 1986 and grew up in Huntington Beach, known predominantly for
UFC, commercial surf culture, and tanning salons. He established his musical sensibilities in the middle of the burgeoning southern California Psych-Garage scene (Burger
records, Ty Segall, McHugh's Distillery studio) while retaining his unique perspective
on the spirit of American Rhythm & Blues and Rock & Roll.

Waterhouse started performing as a teenager. "It was really motivated by fear," he
recalls. "I'm kind of an introvert, so it was an uncomfortable situation. It was a way
to force a crisis." The young artist experienced an exhilaration he'd never felt before,
and hasn't found anywhere else since. "It's a feeling of heightened awareness that goes
beyond pleasure," Waterhouse explains. "It has something to do with seeing ahead in
time and behind in time all at once. You don't just get the immediate reward; you get
the potential that rewards you the same way."

Waterhouse explored the idea of potential on his breakthrough single, "Some Place," a
beautifully lean, propulsive track recorded at all-analog studio the Distillery and self
released in 2010 on his own Pres label. "Well, there's someplace that I'd rather be,"
Waterhouse sang in a fierce yet plaintive register. "And it's something that's been on my
    mind almost constantly."

These days, Waterhouse is a successful recording artist, with one well-received LP and
and several high-profile tours and collaborations to his name. But his latest work still
embodies the struggle of his early forays. During "This Is a Game," Waterhouse sets up
a snarly, post-surf guitar solo with a succinct statement of a cynical outlook: "This is a
game / Please remember my words / And don't get upset when you don't get what you
think you deserve." And on the gothic-soul strut "Let It Come Down," he meditates on
the inevitability of pain. "If there's gonna be rain tonight," he sings in a stoic croon.
    "Let it come down."

It's clear from this material that Waterhouse is in the midst of his own becoming. He
isn't the type to let ecstasy take over, like Van Morrison, or to drawl away in a consummately laid-back register, like Mose Allison. In the tension between his wry lyrics and
crisp arrangements, you hear the expression of a worldly skeptic who's also-when it
comes to his art-a sanctified believer. Whoever it was that Nick Waterhouse wanted to
be matters less now; these days, he just sounds like himself.

Nancy Wilson, one of the most stylish and sultry singers in jazz. Here we have an exciting mix of influences from the music of Nat King Cole, the romanticism of Billy Eckstine, the emotional delivery of Dinah Washington and the genius of Little Jimmy Scott.

Nancy Wilson signed with Capitol Records in 1959, and recorded 37 albums over a period of 20 years, a period in which many of her album sales were second only to the Beatles, surpassing even Sinatra, Peggy Lee, the Beach Boys and Nat King Cole.

This exhilarating album features the legendary bassist Chuck Rainey on this previously hard to find gem of an album. Produced by David Cavanaugh and with musical arrangements from Jimmy Jones, Phil Wright and Joe Parnello. Of Jimmy Jones, Nancy Wilson says one of the greatest arrangers there ever was. Very sparse, nothing overdone.

    Musicians:

    • Nancy Wilson (vocal)

    • Jimmy Jones (piano, arranger, conductor)

    • Phil Wright, Joe Parnello (arranger, conductor)

    • Chuck Rainey (bass)

The Piano Scene Of Ahamd Jamal (Speaker Corner)

The early recordings made by Ahmad Jamal for the Epic label have disappeared into the annals of jazz history. His trio with bass and drums, however, was certainly a whole lot more famous in clubs, at festivals and in TV shows in the Fifties. The present LP contains twelve numbers performed by a trio composed of a guitar and bass or drums - Ray Crawford, Eddie Calhoun, Walter Perkins only being known to a handful of jazz fans - and only a few compositions of his own, most titles are favourites from musicals of the day. Ahmad Jamal reveals the influence of Art Tatum and Nat King Cole in his performance, whereby his masterly art and independent style is already recognizable. The trios are quite unique in themselves, although the hierarchy is unchangeable: Ahmad Jamal is and remains the boss; he performs the majority of the solos.

A special highlight is surely the first version of Billy Boy. And not only Miles Davis praised the pianist for his technical prowess and wealth of ideas. Aki And Ukthay (Brother and Sister) also offers the possibility to admire Jamal's pianistic proficiency. What a good idea to bring out these early recordings once more for jazz lovers! Especially because the Epic label is truly underestimated in the record market. The recording quality is absolutely impeccable - a true listener's gem.

    Marvin Gaye 1961 - 1965

Universal Music will release Marvin Gaye's first seven studio albums in a new vinyl box set titled 1961-1965.

The collection kicks off with the soul legend's Motown debut The Soulful Moods of Marvin Gaye (1961) which is full of jazz/pop standards from the like of Irving Berlin and Cole Porter, while the second album, That Stubborn Kinda Fellow (1962) moves into R&B with Gaye co-writing many tracks including the song that launched Paul Young's career, Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home).

When I'm Alone I Cry (1964) is a product of Gaye's early battles with Berry Gordy over direction, with the singer again reluctant to embrace a soul/R&B sound and instead focusing on being a jazz vocalist. Together (1964) with Mary Wells was Gaye's first top 40 album in the US pop charts and the collection of show tunes and standards did provide a couple of top 20 singles. Hello Broadway was a third album in that year and a switch back to soul/R&B for How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You (1965) gave Marvin Gaye his first really big hit single, thanks to the Holland-Dozier-Holland penned title track. This vinyl box is completed by Gaye's Tribute To Nat King Cole which was released in November 1965 just nine months after Cole's death.

Marvin Gaye expert Harry Weinger has overseen this set which sees many of these early records back in print on vinyl for the first time in quite a while.

    Albums included:
The Soulful Moods of Marvin Gaye (1961)
    That Stubborn Kinda Fellow (1963)

Hamilton Leithauser announces his debut solo album Black Hours via Ribbon Music -
inaugurating a new chapter in an already remarkable career from The Walkmen front man. The album
brings Leithauser full circle and then some, from lonely midwinter piano-and-vocals sessions, to a
loud, live Rock n Roll group and back again. Featuring Leithauser with a slew of talented collaborators
including Rostam Batmanglij (Vampire Weekend), Paul Maroon (The Walkmen), Morgan Henderson
(Fleet Foxes) and Richard Swift (The Shins/solo), the album showcases Leithauser at his most
    passionate, personal and free.

The video for the first single "Alexandra," which was directed by SXSW Film Festival Grand Jury award
winning director Tristan Patterson. The track was co-written by Hamilton Leithauser and Rostam
Batmanglij, the latter producing and mixing the track.

In its orchestrated rhythms, dynamic vocals, and generous production, Black Hours speaks from one
booming voice. The instrumentation provides muscle and texture: Maroon covering a wide range of
acoustic and electric guitars as well as grand piano; Batmanglij switching between guitar, harpsichord,
piano, bass and harmonica; Morgan Henderson from Fleet Foxes takes the marimba and upright bass,
and Richard Swift lays down impressive drums on seven tracks (Henderson & Swift will be accompanying
Leithauser on a full U.S. tour). Amber Coffman from the Dirty Projectors provides backing vocals on
several numbers and even Hugh McIntosh of Leithauser's first band, the Recoys, returns to the drum
stool for a pair of songs.

Principal recording was done in August 2013 at Vox Studios in Los Angeles, "the oldest private studio in
the world", where Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, Johnny Mercer, and countless others cut demos before
appearing on air at NBC studios, just across Melrose Ave.

When I Look In Your Eyes

Years after the '90s, the decade will be remembered for the rise of pianist-vocalist Diana Krall. Simply put, this British Columbian-born artist is one of the most engaging musicians to emerge from the heap of scat-happy singers high on pyrotechnics, but short on poetry. Stamped with the imprimatur of the Nat King Cole trio and blessed by her apprenticeship with the late West Coast piano giant Jimmy Rowles, Krall simply sings songs the way they're supposed to be sung: with devotion to the lyric and with attention to the groove.

This album finds Krall in familiar company with compatriots Russell Malone (on guitar), bassist John Clayton, drummers Lewis Nash and Jeff Hamilton, and vibraphonist (and former Bill Evans associate) Larry Bunker--all supported by Johnny Mandel's svelte string arrangements. Krall and crew take Irving Berlin's chestnut Let's Face the Music and Dance and the Sinatra-signatured I've Got You Under My Skin south to Brazil via a sexy bossa nova. Malone's lush guitar accompaniment complements Krall's heartfelt delivery on When I Look in Your Eyes, and Michael Franks's Popsicle Toes dances courtesy of Hamilton's drum work. Devil May Care, East of the Sun (and West of the Moon), The Best Thing for You, and the stridish I Can't Give You Anything but Love groove with a minimum of waste, while Mandel's simpatico strings steal the show on I'll String Along with You, Pick Yourself Up, and Do It Again. All of which further illuminate the cool fire from this fine gift from North of the Border. --Eugene Holley Jr.

    Live In Paris

Recorded at the historic Olympia Theatre in Paris in November 2001, this is Diana Krall's first live album. Backed by her quicksilver combo of bassist John Clayton, drummer Jeff Hamilton, and guitarist John Pisano (on some tracks), Krall's jazz heritage comes through loud and clear on this program of standards, ballads, and bossa novas. On Peggy Lee's I Love Being Here with You, Bob Dorough's Devil May Care, and Frank Sinatra's Fly Me to the Moon, Krall's snappy, postbop piano playing shows off her debt to Nat King Cole and Jimmy Rowles.

Her cool contralto vocals are illuminated by the Orchestre Symphonique Europeen, under the direction of Alan Broadbent, as well as the London Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Claus Ogerman. Krall's deep take on Joni Mitchell's A Case of You is a great choice for an encore, and the album concludes with Billy Joel's Just the Way You Are (a studio track from a film called The Guru), with tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker and bassist Christian McBride. This collection only hints at what Diana Krall has to offer in the future. -Eugene Holley Jr.

All For You: A Dedication To The Nat King Cole Trio

All for You is a tribute to the Nat King Cole Trio of the 1940s, when Cole performed as both a singer and a pianist. Krall, like her heroes Lena Horne and Carmen McRae, is also a singer-pianist, and she plays both roles on most of the songs here. She's able to link her singing to her piano playing in sympathetic ways and projects tremendous feeling through both. Like Cole in the '40s, Krall plays with a drummerless trio--here with guitarist Russell Malone and bassist Paul Keller. Their sense of intimate rapport is especially valuable on ballads such as You Call It Madness and I'm Thru with Love, but also allows such uptempo tunes as Hit That Jive Jack to swing with surprising lightness. -Geoffrey Himes
